Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to undertake a thorough study of a news article entitled "31 Policemen Questioned in Kanjuruhan Stadium Tragedy" by looking at both its contextual and textual elements. To analyze the data, the research used a content analysis and discourse analysis design. While the contextual study relied on Dell Hymes' ethnography of communication, notably the Speaking Model (Hymes, 1974), the textual analysis concentrated on the coherence devices given by Halliday and Hasan (1976). All essential elements, such as the setting, participants, ends, act order, key, instruments, and norms, were identified, according to the contextual analysis. The four content categories of reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction were found in the textual analysis; however, the article did not fully contain all sub-categories.

Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to investigate the sociolinguistic features of these slogans using Hymes' SPEAKING model and to highlight how they reflect some aspects of the Hadrami identity. In the academic field, the linguistic analysis of slogans has been explored. However, and to the best of my knowledge, no previous study tackles the vehicle slogans using a sociolinguistic framework. This paper is limited to about thirty chosen slogans which were noticed written on the back glasses of different kinds of vehicles in the streets of Al-Mukalla, the capital city of the coastal part of Hadhramout governorate, Yemen. These slogans were collected by the author and some colleagues during the period from 2016-2018. Within Hymes' model, the variables (S), (P), (E), and (I) were redundant, so they were excluded from the analysis. The other variables; (A)ct sequences, (K)eys, (N)orms, and (G)enres were the ones considered in the analysis. The analysed slogans show that the Hadramis are generally sarcastic considering their everyday life issues and attempt to express their opinions in an indirect way as a strategy of soothing their disappointments and managing to overcome them or al least reduce their negative influence on them.

ABSTRACT The daily press conferences on COVID-19 infection updates in Brunei titled Sidang Media Status Terkini Jangkitan COVID-19 Negara Brunei Darussalam have been a platform for the public to access information on the pandemic. Using Hymes’s (1972) SPEAKING model, this study aims to examine speech incidences and their similarities and differences during the conference and subsequent question-and-answer (Q&A)s between the media and ministries. The study utilised the qualitative descriptive method by analysing data retrieved from the Q&A transcripts between the journalists and ministries. These transcripts were produced from live telecasts of the conferences via Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB). The journalists covered in this study came from agencies such as The Scoop, Shianghuan Residency, The Bruneian, @ranoadidas, RTB and Borneo Bulletin. The findings of the study proved that the SPEAKING model was highly effective in examining various speech events and their similarities and differences in the Q&As. Six components of SPEAKING showed similarities – the setting and scene, participants, ends, instrumentalities, norms and genres. However, the balance two components, act sequences and key, demonstrated specific differences. The component of instrumentalities was also placed under further investigation because there were similarities detected during the conversations and differences in language use. In this case, the phenomenon of varied code-switching that occurred was identified in the data. Results showed that there were implicit elements in the questions asked. Overall, utterances in the conferences fulfilled all aspects of the SPEAKING model; hence, the Q&A could be easily followed by the audience. As such, all eight components of the model were found to have contributed to the speech incidences. Consequently, the study can measure an individual’s interacting abilities and competence in communicating and understanding societal norms. Abstract:
Given the importance of cultural issues in different societies, scholars have introduced the ethnography of communication to examine the differences in light of language and context. Related to this theory is Hymes’ SPEAKING model (1967), in which setting and scene, participants, ends, acts sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms, and genre are taken into account to analyze speech events. Since the words and expressions we use in everyday speech have emotional loads, adding an emotional aspect to this model (E-SPEAKING) seems to provide a more comprehensive picture regarding cultural and linguistic interpretations. The present study; therefore, first, introduces the concept of emoling by analyzing [Nāz Kardan]-related vocabularies, and then, by considering closing and opening discourse, tries to relate the concepts of ethnography of communication and emotional ethnography. Such cultural emolings can reduce the existing gap between social and psychological studies and lead to a more holistic view on language and culture, which consequently prevent separating emotions from cultures.

Abstract:
Based on multifarious levels of social status, education, and occupation, people have certain values which construct and reconstruct their identity. In the Iranian culture, “Devaluation” means blemishing these values that make people ignore individuals’ values and virtues through certain linguistic expressions. Studying these expressions, one can achieve its dominant culture in Iranian society. Therefore, the current research is an attempt to study Devaluation Cultuling (culture+language) in light of the conceptual model of cultuling analysis. By integrating the components of Hymes’s (1967) SPEAKING model, emotioncy model and cultural models, the conceptual model of cultuling analysis is the most comprehensive model for studying cultulings of the Persian language. Studying 712 linguistic structures and expressions containing devaluation cultuling and interviewing 140 individuals, the authors found that devaluation cultuling is commonly used in Iranian culture with high frequency, and individuals have negative feelings toward this cultuling. Iranians employ devaluation cultuling for various purposes such as destructing and belittling others’ achievements, insulting, questioning the culture of community members, flattering and hiding their weaknesses. Findings demonstrated that this cultuling could represent cultural models of indirectness, high context, low trust, and holistic thinking of Iranians. Informing people about devaluation cultuling enables us to modify and change this defective cultural gene.

Abstract:
Clinical case presentations are core medical speech events carried out in medical and teaching institutions worldwide among both students and active practitioners. While in most non-English speaking locales these events will usually be communicated in a local language they are also, on set occasions, often performed in English. In order to understand both how and why clinical case presentations are carried out in English in non-English speaking Asian locales, the author visited 8 medical universities and/or affiliated hospitals in 6 Asian countries, observing a total of 36 English clinical case presentations, followed by interviews with 25 different clinical practitioners, teachers, or medical students. The author then analyzed the collected speech event data in terms of Hymes' (1974) SPEAKING model, augmented by Swales' (1990) focus upon 'moves' in genre analysis, and further informed by Bhatia's (1994) introduction of a socio-cognitive dimension to genre analysis, in order to develop a well-rounded descriptive synoptic model of how this speech event is both perceived and performed in non-English speaking English settings. It is hoped that these insights can be further applied to the development of English for Medical Purposes (EMP) materials or curricula and that this case may serve as an exemplar for other inquiries into professional, situated ESP speech events.

The gathered data were analyzed by using Milles and Hubberman model, consisted of Collecting Data; Data Display; Data reduction; Conclusion Drawing; and Evaluation. This model is referred to 8 (eight) components of Hymes; namely, SPEAKING rhetorical analysis. Empirical data found in the fieldwork would be connected in order to develop Markobar as a traditional local wisdom based-rhetorical model. The result of the research showed that in order to master Markobar, one had to understand Dalihan na Tolu and Tutur. In Markobar, rhetorical narration is deductive. This speech (Markobar) has to be presented with full of carefulness, especially in selecting the appropriate words and utterances. The speaking method in it is highly emphasized on the aspect of tenderness, either in intonation or in diction. As a genre, it is an art of speaking which is aimed to attract sympathy; its narration is intended to attract the attention of the listeners and to be successful in achieving its goal. The model developed is AHLI HORAS, an acronym of Akhlak (morals), Ilmu (science), Hormat (homage), and Rasional (rationality).

In 1962, Dell Hymes proposed the project he subsequently named the ethnography of communication (Hymes1961, 1962, 1964b). Its central motive was to create a theory of linguistic communication which is grounded in the comparative analysis of many communities and their distinctive ways of speaking. Just as there is a comparative politics, law, religion, and so forth, he said, so should there be a comparative analysis of “studies ethnographic in basis and communicative in scope” (Hymes1964b:9). Such studies would be “whole ethnographies focused on communicative behavior” (1964b:9) and would be guided by, and subsequently used to guide the revision of, a descriptive framework which itself is a model of sociolinguistic description.

Abstract:
In any culture of conversation, especially the African culture, any specific act of speaking is a reflection of an individual‟s personality system that is profitable for a cordial, comprehensive and conducive communicative exchange by the speakers. Conversation can be established and sustained on the basis of certain principles; these tenets are conceptualised in Hymes‟ Ethnography of communication. This research attempts to investigate the conversational pattern of the protagonist (Ifemelu) in Adichie‟s Americanah, using the S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. communication model by Dell Hymes‟ (1974) The researcher using stratified random sample collected ten (10) conversations of Ifemelu in the African novel from pages 74,88,116,121,20,205,179,438,443, and 502. These conversations are carefully in three dimensions which followed a pattern in their different spheres: when Ifemelu was in Nigeria, in America, and when she returned to Nigeria. The research shows the first sphere of Ifemelu‟s conversation as being naïve and uncertain of what she wanted out of life. The second sphere saw her as a focused and confident lady who is in control of her life. In the third sphere, she had grown into an institution. Her conversations were knitted with control, dominion, and satisfaction. The S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. model which is an acronym for SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, END, ACT SEQUENCE, KEY, INSTRUMENT, NORMS and GENRES is highly dependent in analysing the conversations. The research shows conversationalists model and agree on their stances, values, norms, and belief system through language and bringing it all to the table of conversation.

Abstract:
This research explores the various uses of the particle rē (रे) in Nepali discourse, emphasizing its role as a marker of uncertainty, politeness, and affective nuance. The research employs linguistic anthropology and discourse analysis as theoretical frameworks, such as Dell Hymes' SPEAKING model, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of linguistic capital, and the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. The analysis of expressions of rē (रे), as a versatile linguistic device, reveals that the particle conveys uncertainty, mediates assertions, and fosters social harmony. The study underscores the cultural and social importance of what might otherwise be perceived as trivial linguistic features. It also infers the usage of rē varies across geographic regions, social contexts, and gender identities, reflecting broader cultural values such as collectivism, indirectness, and face preservation. The study contributes to ongoing discussions in linguistic anthropology regarding the interaction between language, culture, and power, emphasizing the necessity of understanding local linguistic features to appreciate the complexity of human communication.

Abstract:
Buginese is a local language in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, which is spoken in almost 60% of Sulawesi Island. This study aimed to explore the selection of linguistic variations and language acts as a linguistic model used by ethnic Buginese in establishing discourses of everyday socio-pragmatic interactions. It relied on a qualitative design to obtain the linguistic corpus that occurs empirically and naturally in communication interactions. This study used the snowball method by combining ethnographic strategies. The instrument used the Speaking Involvement Technique, in which the researchers were directly involved in people’s interactions by paying attention to communicating situations, recording data, and conducting interviews for data validation purposes. All data or corpus of linguistic variations and speech acts collected were analyzed by the speaking strategy componential technique strategy developed by Dell Hymes. This study successfully discovers a model for identifying the Buginese ethnicity's linguistic variations and speech acts to build a discourse of communication interactions. The expressions of selection of linguistic variations and speech acts are dominantly based on polite sentence constructions and formulations, and ethically according to the local culture of Buginese ethnicity, namely the culture of siri. The results of this study can affect the enrichment of scientific information, which functions and acts as a meaningful reference in the field of linguistic studies, especially examining speech act variation in the expression of conversational discourse, in addition to being a foundation in the development of local content material and multicultural understanding.

Abstract:
This study explores the Mahpangngolo tradition, a ceremonial procession integral to celebrations among the people of Enrekang, Indonesia. The tradition symbolizes community participation and reinforces values of politeness and respect. However, younger generations are increasingly disengaged from such cultural practices, threatening their preservation. An ethnographic communication approach was employed, involving observations, interviews, and documentation. Dell Hymes' SPEAKING model (Situation, Participants, Ends, Act Sequence, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms, Genres) served as the analytical framework for understanding the communicative dimensions of Mahpangngolo. The Mahpangngolo procession emphasizes the symbolic exchange of gifts between guests and hosts. This act is marked by the use of formal and polite language, reflecting mutual respect and community cohesion. Specific expressions by guest representatives and celebration family members underscore the cultural significance of respect and politeness. The findings highlight the Mahpangngolo tradition as a medium for transmitting core values of Indonesian society. Addressing the indifference of younger generations requires initiatives to promote cultural understanding and appreciation. The Mahpangngolo tradition embodies politeness and respect, core values that strengthen communal bonds. Efforts to preserve and promote these traditions are vital for maintaining cultural heritage.

Their initial framework, which included three fundamental parts, was put forth by Canale and Swain (1980:29–30). Grammatical competence deals with sentence-level semantics, morphology, syntax, and phonology; sociolinguistic competence deals with discourse norms like cohesion and coherence; and strategic competence deals with the verbal and nonverbal communication strategies a speaker uses to achieve a desired result. Later, in 1983, Canale refined this paradigm by dividing sociolinguistic competence into two distinct categories: discourse competence (cohesion and coherence) and sociolinguistic competence (correct vocabulary, register, and politeness norms).

The presented article is devoted to the study of the features of representation of situational models on the example of small-format English-language texts. The purpose of this article is to identify situational models and analyze the features of language means of their representation of situational models. During the study, the following methods were used: description, contextual analysis, content analysis, discourse analysis. The article examined situational models using the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model proposed by D. Hymes, in which such situation components as Act Sequence, Instrumentalities, Participants, Key were identified. In the process of representing the cognitive model of the situation, Act Sequence comes to the fore, which is explained by the author's desire to show the dynamics of the development of the event. In small format texts, with the help of linguistic means, components such as Instrumentalities and Participants are distinguished, which are of particular importance for creating an emotional background for the situation. During the analysis, the following participants in the episodes were identified: family, parents, kids, landlady. The study showed that the identified cognitive models of situations, represented in the English-language educational discourse, arouse great interest among students, which, in turn, arouses interest in the language means of their representation and, as a result, interest in the language and culture of English-speaking countries.

Abstract:
This article aims to find a shift in Minangkabau culture that began from a family environment. This article studied four types of Minangkabau families with children aged 10-19 years. This study applied descriptive qualitative research methods with in-depth interview techniques. The SPEAKING model of Hymes was used to construct communication patterns within the family when passing down Minangkabau’s norms through storytelling to children. Norms that do not resemble Minangkabau cultural teachings were taught by families with Minang fathers, while families with non-Minang fathers taught norms that were similar to Minangkabau cultural teachings. This family always taught the value of survival and common sense due their status as migrants. In fact, this is the core value instilled by the ancestors of the Minangkabau people that was misunderstood by their younger generations. The meaning of survival and common sense value introduced by Minangkabau cultural teachings need to be clarified to children through their family environment, so that they can be closer to their own cultural roots. This condition makes them keen to build their own region equipped with positive values learned from the Minangkabau culture.

Abstract:
Language and literature are essentially connected, and one cannot function without the other. Thus, this study analyzes the language functions used by the main characters in the short story The Summer Solstice by Nick Joaquin. This study aims to determine the types of Language functions in the short story and identify the most dominant language function used by the main characters. Moreover, the study also aims to analyze the context of the language functions identified. The researchers used Janet Holmes’ Theory of Language Function (2013) to analyze the utterances of the main characters and Dell Hymes' SPEAKING Model to analyze the context of the language functions in each utterance. The researchers then applied the descriptive qualitative design to systematically analyze the data. The result of this study shows that out of the eight (8) language functions identified by Janet Holmes (2013), only seven (7) types of language functions were found in the short story, namely expressive, directive, heuristic, referential, metalinguistic, phatic functions. On the other hand, poetic function was not found in this research. The findings revealed that this story dominantly uses expressive functions, in which the speaker's emotion is what captures the interest of the readers.

Abstract:
Ethnography in general is communication in society. Ethnography of communication combines ethnography, description and structural and functional analysis of society and culture, and linguistics of cultural behavior that guides and helps share knowledge, art, morals, beliefs, and everything that people acquire as members of society. Communication Ethnography is an approach to understanding society and culture and reconstructing this ethnic group, especially society in general. Discourse is also very often used in communication in society, at work, offices, schools and public places, both formally and informally. Discourse in English is called discourse and is defined as expression in communicative interaction. Speech events are based on eight speech components. Hymes summarizes these components with the acronym SPEAKING. Ethnography of communication in this discussion refers to the use of language in certain community groups. A smile means, for example, eight components of speech: (1) Setting and scene, (2) Participants, (3) Ending, (4) Sequential action, (5) Key, (6) Instrument, (7) Interaction norms, and (8) Flow. This study shows that the main focus of workplace research is a professional workplace and the ability to express oneself calmly at work. However, as stated in this review article, there are several interesting studies regarding the topic of communication in workplace briefings, for example using relaxed language but still targeting different jobs and power or positions, different nationalities, even different cultures. but still respectful. with each other between the owner and sales marketing staff, as in the discussion above. Another potential growth area is the study of multilingual conversation patterns in the workplace and communication norms at press conferences. Recent research in this area explores the importance of ideology and effectiveness in multilingual communication in the workplace. The research clearly shows the importance of communication ethnography, namely the dense interaction of participants. High network density is essential. This research describes communication competence. each participant is considered to have expressed his opinion. All statements from the meeting created strong communication between the three members. At the same time, it can be assumed that the participants are owners and sellers who have long established close relations, even quite proper, relaxed, clear and concise cooperation. So, their level of cognition deserves thumbs up. Another important thing is to create clear communication in the office space. Another achievement is that Participant 2 is a sales marketer from Germany who is able to adapt to the work environment and belongs to a lower caste. But it shows the same thing as the relevant statement. However, external participants, despite coming from upper caste strata, gave conflicting statements. Even though people from different castes always try to fulfill their demands or desires in conversation.

Abstract:
This study aims to extract and analyze all the proverbs used in the play "Jatau Na Kyallu" written by Alhaji Shu'aibu Makarfi (1970) using the Ethnography of Communication theory. The theory studies communication within the context of social and cultural practices and beliefs, as propounded by Dell Hymes in 1974. To achieve this aim, the play was analyzed, and 48 proverbs were extracted and analyzed using the SPEAKING model for analyzing speech in its cultural context. The study found that all the proverbs used in the play were influenced by the social and cultural aspects of the speech community, as well as the context in which they were used. The eight parameters of social and cultural contexts that guided the use of the proverbs were identified as setting, participants, ends, act sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms of interaction, and genre. The study concludes that the link between linguistic forms and the society they portray is essential, and such harmony is a powerful strategy used by the writer (Alhaji Shu’aibu Makarfi) to make the work relevant to Hausa studies researchers. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the teaching of Hausa proverbs should be encouraged in schools to help children appreciate the culture and moral lessons that the proverbs offer.

Abstract:
Purpose The author presents a descriptive sociological framework for the communicative interaction between an adult who stutters (AWS) and other communication partners. The author shows that the communicative interaction between an AWS and another interactant is a sociological object that can be evaluated by both parties in real-time, and is impacted by settings, participants, identity, stigmatization, and the type of talk. These elements are consistent with Hymes' SPEAKING model, which was developed to describe speech communication in a social context and can lay the foundation for the development of an ethnography of stuttering. The clinical applications and implications of a sociological framework are discussed and future directions for research are suggested. Method This work is a refinement and enhancement of Mancinelli (2018) and Mancinelli (2019) and the research associated with that work. This is a tutorial with a clinical focus designed to introduce the readership to a sociological perspective on communicative interactions in AWS. Conclusions Stuttering is an emergent phenomenon embedded within a social interaction, necessitating a deeper understanding of the processes at work during those interactions. A sociological framework can provide a more comprehensive description of the communicative interactions as well as the sociocommunicative lives of people who stutter. The information obtained can inform the formulation of realistic, functional goals based on the daily life of the client. Implications for the development of an ethnography of stuttering are discussed.

Abstract:
This study critically examines the language use of Femi Osofisan’s characters/casts as portrayed in The Midnight Blackout and how such usage is affected and determined by situations and contexts. Analysis of discourse in the play is premised on a model adaptation of Discourse Analysis presented in Hyme’s (1962) Ethnography of Communication and Grice’s Conversational Maxim. The study employs Hyme’s Ethnography of Communication model which is encapsulated in the SPEAKING acronym, and Conversational Maxims by Grice which engages the maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner. This critical analysis reveals language as an indispensable and instinctive medium in human communication. Analysis also reveals the linguistic and social surrounding or environment of Femi Osofisan’s The Midnight Blackout and foregrounds language as the spectrum through which the society can be appreciated.

Abstract:
<strong>Abstract</strong> Language and society is symbiotically interrelated in that language defines a society and the society in turn determines the acceptable&nbsp; use of language by individuals be it spoken or written form which comprise comments on social media network.&nbsp; Comments from Nigerian Cross-Dressers blog generally is predisposed by individual&rsquo;s idiosyncratic attitudes, personal biases, myopic point of elevation and general world view. These individualistic tendencies sometimes give rise to language flaming which has proven to be a tool of attack and domination among internet language users.&nbsp; Using Van Djik&rsquo;s (1999) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Dell Hyme&rsquo;s SPEAKING&nbsp; acronym model as frame work, the paper carried out a descriptive analysis of 250 comments purposefully selected from the Instagram&nbsp; platforms of; Denrele Edun, Bobrisky, Jay Boogie and James Brown. Findings showed that the posts made by Denrele Edun, Bobrisky, Jay Boogie and James Brown and the analyzed corresponding comments reflected high tendency of hate speech, trolling, abuse, threat to life, body shaming and insult. The study therefore recommended that metaphorical depiction of unruly dressing, too much makeovers and luxury display should be discouraged among the cross dressers. Also, standard and formal use of Language across the social media should be implemented.

Abstract:
Attaining national unity and cohesion is a function of deliberate strategic plans of different facets of human endeavour in a nation. The language front has important role to play in fostering national unity and cohesion in any country. The Nigeria and Africa situation is not an exception. The chaos and rivalry that have become an intrinsic experience for us in Nigeria and in fact, Africa is partly a function of careless and unchecked language use in the social media. This paper, therefore, explores the use and misuse of language on social media. The study examines the comments of Facebook users to online news headlines posted on Premium Times Facebook handle. A corpus of a week screenshot samples of these comments are collected out of which nine (9) were purposively selected for the analysis. These nine (9) data are grouped into five (5) texts. The selected data were analysed using Dell Hymes’ Ethnography of Speaking complemented by Theo van Leeuwen’s Identities and Subjectivity Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The paper uses the SPEAKING acronym as the theoretical insight and discussion was based on the postulations of the CDA model adopted. The study found that the responses from readers are mostly tilting towards their individual affiliations. Also, instances of arguments and rebuttals by readers reflect a situation where the polarity tilts in bidirectional positive in-group - “us” and negative out-group – “them” among the different affiliations the users represent. The study further found that copious use of vulgar expressions pervades the comments of readers. This study therefore concludes that such use of language cannot help Nigeria and Africa in its quest for unity. The study recommends that media literacy be taught in schools in order to entrench civility in the discussions of people on social media.
