Full textDeviancy training, defined as the constellation of social processes which shape, encourage and promote deviant behaviours between peers, is associated with the increase in behaviour problems in both childhood and adolescence. The few studies which have examined deviancy training in childhood are however limited in several ways. They have only studied positive reinforcement as a social influence process and have ignored others such as modeling; they have not identified the roles children can take in the interaction, either being the training agent or the one receiving the training; they studied deviancy training between general peers and did not specifically consider friends’ contribution; and have used only at risk samples. This thesis provides a more complete portrait of deviancy training. Using the longitudinal Quebec Newborn Twin Study, we document the prevalence of modeling and positive reinforcement – provided and received – at six years of age, as well as the concurrent contribution of behaviour problems on these dimensions. We also examined the contribution of deviancy training on the increase of behaviour problems a year later. Results of the first study show that modeling and positive reinforcement – provided and received – are prevalent in this low-risk sample and that behaviour problems are associated only with provided dimensions, thus revealing that deviancy training takes place between deviant and non-deviant children. The second study indicates that, over and above initial behaviour problems, only provided modeling predicts an increase in behaviour problems a year later. Our findings suggest that in low-risk contexts where overall levels of behaviour problems are low, deviancy training is not practiced between deviant peers but between deviant and non deviant children, and that behaviour problems only increase for those who provide deviant modeling. The level of risk in samples is therefore an important factor in deviancy training, as it could influence the degree of affiliation between deviant peers and the social promotion of deviant behaviour. These findings are useful for the design and implementation of programs that target peer affiliations as a way of preventing antisocial behaviour. The measurement weaknesses of the study would however need to be addressed before drawing solid conclusions.

Full textPeople suffering from Alzheimer’s disease suffer from cognitive declines which deteriorate their general and oral health. We frequently observe dental cavities, periodontal disease and tooth loss among these people. In that respect, we wanted to establish a health and oral evolutionary curve throughout Alzheimer’s disease. To that end, we conducted a prospective observational study that includes a transverse and longitudinal component. The participants had to have Alzheimer’s disease at different stages, have teeth and live in the province of Quebec. Combative, bedridden people, and those who were diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis or who had heart valve prostheses were excluded from this research. The data corresponding to the variable responses (number of visible and missing teeth, obturations, cavities, retained dental roots and loose teeth, plaque index and gingival bleeding) and explanatory variables (age, gender, education level, resulting score to the Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination, co-morbid conditions, quantity of saliva and the use of dental care) have been provided through a medical examination form. We recruited participants (n = 46) from six Quebec health facilities between May 2016 and October 2017. This study showed that as Alzheimer’s disease progresses, dental plaque (p = 0,05) and gingival bleeding (p = 0,01) increase and the number of teeth (p < 0,0001) and fillings (p = 0,04) decreases. Also, the number of cavities, retained dental roots and loose teeth, seem to increase with the progression of the disease. The probability of having a cavity drastically increases as the cognitive decline progresses (p = 0,023). In conclusion, oral health deteriorates with the development of Alzheimer’s disease, and this from the moderate stage of the disease.

Full textThe socio-professional integration of the information technologies (IT) sector immigrant workforce in Quebec is not well documented. The sector is dynamic in the region and growing businesses are facing a labour shortage specific to the local economy. This would suggest the best possible integration of immigrants trained in IT, while studies on the general integration of immigrants highlight difficulties at both the provincial and regional levels. The methodology used in our study is qualitative. 28 skilled immigrants report their socio-professional situation prior to getting their first IT job in Quebec. We then study the professional trajectory of seven of them following a four step longitudinal approach, for one year (after one month, after 3 months, after 6 months and after one year to employment). To understand the integration process, this thesis taps into symbolic interactionist theory and takes a particular interest in the human experience and the symbolic dimension. It also refers to the interpretative process of Michael Piore (in Beyond Individualism, 1995) which recognizes, in today’s world, the emergence of social minorities, such as immigrants with special interests who are not recognized by institutions. The results of this approach emphasize the same barriers to professional integration as those observed with Quebec’s immigrant workforce in general. The market more specifically fails to assess and recognize the qualification and of these immigrant workers who are consequently underemployed. In the Quebec IT sector, insertion into first employment is thus conditioned by Quebec training. The integration in the labour market, studied within one year, is fraught with challenges and hides individual actions and integration strategies established by immigrants to circumvent the obstacles. In the face of this risk situation, the most surprising findings emerge. Indeed, monitoring the integration of these skilled workers over a continuous period of time brings to light the continuation of a project and an ability of agency on the part of the immigrants encountered. The study of these two dimensions posits that although some of them find themselves in a disappointing professional situation, they are not ultimately unhappy. They describe their satisfaction in terms of employment opportunities, material comfort, family plans, goods acquired, individual achievements and obstacles circumvented. Full textFormation constitutes a powerful agent to the process of updating professional competences. The evaluation of such training activities becomes more than ever, a major challenge in Human Resources management. Although the importance of the transfer of competences aimed by a specific formation is undisputed, few research exist relating to this complex process, for autonomous professionals exerting a liberal profession. Within this framework, this research analyzes the factors likely to support the transfer of competences of a group of notaries. More precisely, we are investigating notaries from the province of Québec registered in formation suggested by the Room of the notaries of Quebec. We examine the role of: self perceived effectiveness, motivation towards formation and perceived organisational support as predictors of transfer through a model of effectiveness evaluation of the formation. Our results reveal several predictors of the transfer at work. We also reveal three predictors of competences application at work, approximately a year after the formation. Among those, the organisational support during the actualization of the transfer and a feeling of personal effectiveness arise like the best predictors of transfer as well as the effective use of these competences. Intention of transfer, personal effectiveness before the formation and satisfaction with regard to the formation itself are other predictors of the transfer of competences aimed by the training session. Moreover, this research reveals that organisational support after the formation and personal effectiveness are the most reliable predictors of generalization of competences to other situations. Finally, personal effectiveness at the follow-up and organisational support after the formation as well as satisfaction towards received formation arise as predictors to the use of competences acquired in formation at the work place

Full textIn this thesis, we study Quebec male prison population with a special focus on recidivism. We are especially interested in quantifying the impact of regional economic variables on the probability of recidivism and the number of reoffenses committed in a year. More precisely, we consider variations in regional unemployment rate, minimum wage and average disposable income. Moreover, we include in our analysis domestic predictors: being married or having a family. Since these two parameters are potentially endogenous with recidivism, we estimate bivariate probit regressions and Poisson regressions with regional sex ratios as instrumental variables. The data provided by the ministère de la Sécurité publique allows us to bring to light several results. We estimate that having a family decreases by 18% the likelihood of recidivism, while the effect marriage is not significant. No effect is found for the number of reoffenses committed, neither for being married or having a family. Finally, we find a significant positive correlation between regional wealth and recidivism, whereas we highlight that an increase in real minimum wage is associated with a decrease in recidivism.

Full textObjectives: Little objective and nationally representative data are available concerning the influence of cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND) on utilization of healthcare services. The main objective was to compare the use of healthcare services over three years, between elders with current or incident CIND and those without CIND. A second objective was to evaluate the moderating effect of depression and anxiety on utilization of healthcare services. Methods: Cross-sectional and longitudinal data from a population-based survey of 2265 older adults living in Quebec were used. CIND was linked with medical records from public health insurance plan. Multinomial logistic regressions adjusted for relevant socio-demographic, social network and health-related confounders were conducted for each service. Interaction between CIND and depression/anxiety was also examined. Main results: Current CIND was a predictor of longer anxiolytic/sedative/hypnotic medication use. Incident CIND led to longer hospital stay. Depression raised the likelihood of frequenting geriatricians, psychiatrists or neurologists and emergency department, but lessened the likelihood of visiting general practitioners. The addition of the psychiatric conditions to the incident CIND did not increase the likelihood of consuming antidepressants, while the incident CIND cases without psychiatric conditions increased this likelihood. Discussion: Compared to older adults without CIND, older adults with CIND have a distinct utilization of healthcare services. Evaluation of cognition and psychiatric conditions at key moments could allow a more efficient use of health resources.

Full textThis research project aims to document the association between multiple biological and psychosocial determinants and the emergence of behavioural problems among schoolaged Inuit children. The objectives are firstly to document the presence of these risk factors through descriptive statistics and secondly, test the association with the development of externalizing and internalizing behaviour problems in a sample of eleven-year-old children. 294 Inuit aged between 8 and 14 years living in Nunavik were invited to participate in this longitudinal study. The Teacher's Report Form of the CBCL was faxed to the child's school for his teacher to complete. Pearson correlations and multiple regressions were performed on variables significantly associated with behaviour problems. The results of the correlations show that biological determinants are not associated with the occurrence of internalizing behaviour problems (IBP), and that gender and tobacco consumption during pregnancy are correlated with the appearance of externalized behaviour problems (EBP). In addition, prenatal drug use and breastfeeding have marginally significant correlations with EBP. Regression analyzes show the effects of child gender, prenatal exposure to tobacco, the Raven score and food insecurity are significantly associated with the occurrence of EBP, while the score at Raven and language during the interview, when combined, account for the emergence of IBP. In light of these results, questions remain and are discussed in conclusion.

Full textThis thesis, undertaken in organizational culture studies, uses an interpretative approach to describe the cultural currents that circulate in a milieu where the multimedia field is evolving in a region of the province of Quebec (Canada). This milieu is made up of SMEs, mostly located in a territory eligible for a provincial designated-site tax credit program. In addition, government bodies and intermediary economic groups support SME development. Representatives of all these organizations constitute the research field, some of them being considered as cultural current bearers and producers. By defining culture as an interpretable meaning system and by conceiving of it as traffic flowing into currents within an organized framework, the treatment of cultural phenomenon is not submitted to simple causality. This conception of culture is enriched by the contributions of disciplines such as intercultural psychology, sociology of networks, and prospective philosophy (more specifically work on collective intelligence). The methodology used is based on interpretive ethnography and is aimed at producing a thick description of negotiated meaning among interacting subjects. A longitudinal inquiry using the participant observation method within a sectoral association and a regional issue table, both dedicated to the regional development of multimedia, has enabled the researcher to identify a number of cultural currents: the government funder, service providers, and a group of entrepreneurs. The resulting data gives a thick description centered on themes such as contact among existing currents and the emergence of one of them, based on various cultural integration modes, as well as the evolving meaning of “multimedia”, which develops to become subsumed in the regional sector of information technology.

Full textThe present thesis focuses on children with early language delay (LD) at 18 months of age from a populationbased longitudinal study. It focuses on their co-occurring and school-age developmental difficulties according to LD persistence. First, a retrodictive approach was used to document motor development, sleep and psychosocial development in late-talkers to identify whether specific difficulties and/or their accumulation predict expressive LD persistence over and above initial language levels. Results showed that children with persistent LD accumulated developmental difficulties at 18 months of age whereas those with transient LD only had more oppositional behaviors than children with persistent LD and controls. These developmental difficulties seem to have a contribution to the development of expressive language but they do not predict LD persistence over and above the nature and the severity of early LD. The only unique predictor of persistence at 5 years of age was 18-month receptive vocabulary. Second, school-age language, academic and psychosocial outcomes of children with early LD were investigated according to LD persistence. We wanted to test empirically the hypothesis that children with transient LD had residual difficulties at school-age. Results showed that children with persistent LD accumulated language, academic and psychosocial difficulties up to Grade 6. Children with transient LD however had some psychosocial difficulties in the early school years. Thus, the hypothesis of an illusory recovery in children with transient LD was empirically supported only for psychosocial development. In sum, the results of this thesis showed that children with persistent LD have more co-occurring and schoolage developmental difficulties than those with typical language development. Difficulties were more severe or affected more developmental domains in children with persistent LD in comparison with children with transient LD. Moreover, early co-occurring developmental difficulties could help predict LD persistence at age 5. These results may suggest that children with persistent and transient LD belong to two distinct developmental trajectories underpinned by distinct developmental and etiological mechanisms. The implications of these results for the advancement of scientific knowledge and clinical practice are discussed in the conclusion.

Full textThis doctoral thesis studies the changes in mobility conditions and in residential location of two potentially vulnerable groups: lone-parent families and elderly people. On the one hand, lone-parent families are generally considered one of the most disadvantaged groups in society. On the other hand, seniors face mobility challenges when they eventually lose their driving rights and because they do not consider or are unfamiliar with alternative transport options. The main objective is to identify factors that may create mobility disparities among members of the groups under study. Thus, in this thesis, the mobility disparities between the groups analyzed and comparable population segments (control groups) are measured based on differences in several socio-spatial factors, such as household motorization and residential centrality. The travel speed is used to evaluate mobility disparities because it determines people's activity space and conditions their potential access to opportunities, services and urban amenities outside home. Meanwhile, residential dispersion likely compounds the mobility challenges of vulnerable groups by increasing urban sprawl, which adds to the effort required to reach urban opportunities and activities. This research aims at providing decision makers with tools to assess risks of socio-spatial exclusion in urban areas and to promote policies capable of counteracting the reproduction of spatial injustice dynamics. The analyses developed in this thesis use information from origin-destination surveys of the Quebec City Metropolitan Area (QCMA) for 1996, 2001 and 2006 together with data from population censuses for the same years. The methodology is based on statistical tests of differences in means and proportions; quantile regressions; centrographic analyses of the spatial distribution of places of residence, and randomization tests to assess the significance of findings from the centrographic analysis. Regarding the mobility conditions and constraints faced by lone-parent families, the results indicate that households headed by mothers are less motorized and their members have a mobility gap compared to those led by fathers, which is reflected in lower travel speeds among the members of the former. The observed mobility disparities are particularly strong within trips performed at high travel speeds. Moreover, the centrographic analyses complemented by randomization tests reveal a significant increase in the residential dispersion of lone-parent families and retired couples aged 65 and over (without children at home) in the QCMA between 1996 and 2006. Lastly, the analysis of changes in mobility among elderly people indicates a deterioration in the average travel speed with aging in 1996 and 2006. Additionally, a comparison between 2006 and 1996, based on age cohorts and age groups, indicates a moderate improvement over time in travel speeds of trips associated with low and intermediate speeds, and a clear decline in travel speeds of trips more likely to involve driving a car on a motorway network. The analysis also reveals that the modal share of travel by foot increases with aging and that public transit is seldom used as a transport alternative by the elderly in the QCMA. Furthermore, the level of car access is one of the main determinants of older people’s mobility. The results obtained show the need for a holistic approach to help lone-parents and seniors to overcome their mobility challenges. These initiatives should include (but should not be limited to): developing “friendly” neighborhoods with ready access to urban services and amenities; increasing access to private transport by promoting car-sharing and ride-sharing; and tailoring flexible public transit solutions. Future research looking to expand the findings of this thesis could use the average travel speed estimations to generate cumulative accessibility measures and could also identify households with very restricted car access to detect groups potentially at risk to suffer a socio-spatial exclusion dynamic. Key words: mobility, accessibility, residential dispersion, lone parents, gender, retired couples, seniors, tests of differences of means and proportions, quantile regression, centrographic analysis, randomization tests, socio-spatial exclusion, car dependency.

Full textSince the 1990s, environmental issues in agriculture have increasingly become a public policy problem in industrialized countries, notwithstanding the fact that they are integrated very differently in their respective agricultural policies. Based on this observation, this research seeks to explain the various national institutionalization and evolution paths of the so-called agri-environmental policy through a comparative analysis between Quebec and France. The analytical framework considers both the structures and the policy actors in the agri-environmental policy construction by studying specifically two variables: the configuration of agricultural policies and the role of public administrations. This qualitative research investigates a long time frame (1990-2013) and combines three data collection methods: content analysis, discourse analysis and semi-structured interviews. This thesis shows that traditional agricultural policy key players (agricultural administrations and agricultural professional organizations) act as filters of reformist ideas present globally and that they “acclimate” both the sustainable development paradigm and the new public management paradigm to the specificities of their countries and of their public policy sector
