ABSTRACTThe role of morphology in reading development was examined by measuring participants’ eye movements while they read sentences containing either a hyphenated (e.g., ulko-ovi “front door”) or concatenated (e.g., autopeli “racing game”) compound. The participants were Finnish second, fourth, and sixth graders (aged 8, 10, and 12 years, respectively). Fast second graders and all four and sixth graders read concatenated compounds faster than hyphenated compounds. This suggests that they resort to slower morpheme-based processing for hyphenated compounds but prefer to process concatenated co

AbstractThis paper reviews hyphenated differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) technology. DMS is a type of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) also called high-field asymmetric waveform IMS. It is widely used in the detection of chemical warfare agents, explosives, drugs, and volatile organic compounds. Stand-alone DMS analysis of complex mixtures in real-field applications is challenging. Hyphenated DMS can improve resolution for rapid separation and detection. This review focuses on hyphenated DMS, including gas chromatography-DMS, DMS-mass spectrometry (MS), DMS-IMS, IMS-DMS, and DMS-DMS, as w

This study is an explicitly comparative linguistic analysis of attributive collocations with nationality adjectives in hyphenated compounds with dansk ‘Danish’ and deutsch ‘German’ as first or second element. In cultural studies of identity, migration, and minorities, as well as in Danish and German media debates, hyphenated compounds continuously raise questions: Could meaning be attributed to the hyphen? Is the first element separated from, connected with, or subordinated to the second element by the hyphen – or vice versa? The present study seeks to explore whether the order of national adj

Hyphenated compounds have largely been neglected in the studies of compounding, which have seldom analysed compounds in context. In this study, we argue that the hyphen use in compounds is strongly motivated. Hyphenation is used when words form a unit, which reduces the possibility of parsing them into separate units or other forms. The current study adopts a new perspective on contextual factors, namely, which part of speech (PoS) the compound as a whole belongs to and how people correctly parse a compound into a unit. This process can be observed and analysed by considering examples. This st

The conventional approaches lack the characterization of impurities in trace levels, due to sensitivity issues, hyphenated techniques are preferred. Among the modern hyphenated techniques, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has high sensitivity and can analyze large number of organic compounds in a short period of time. The current eye-movement study investigated whether a salient segmentation cue like the hyphen facilitates the identification of long and short compound words. The study was conducted in Finnish, where compound words exist in great abundance. The results showed that long hyphenated compounds (musiikki-ilta) are identified faster than concatenated ones (yllätystulos), but short hyphenated compounds (ilta-asu) are identified slower than their concatenated counterparts (kesäsää). This pattern of results is explained by the visual acuity principle ( Bertram & Hyönä, 2003 ): A long compound wor

Abstract Today, to get a full molecular characterization of gases, a gas chromatographic system hyphenated to both flame ionization (FID) and thermal conductivity (TCD) detectors is essential. However, for on-site, on-line analysis (mostly ATEX zone) FID are forbidden and TCD only allows quantification up to C7. A new universal detector (NGD for Nano Gravimetric Detector) covering a hydrocarbon range from C1 to C40+ has been developed and implemented in miniaturized and transportable system [1].
