Introduction. One of the tasks of modern linguistics is to build a dynamic modelof the human language through the analysis of functionally motivated linguistic units, which,in particular, include hypocoristic names – a non-unofficial (short) variants of a personalname, used mainly for communication purposes. The analysis of the formal and semanticstructure of hypocoristic names, studying their functional features in comparison with those ofthe official (full) names will make it possible to get closer to the understanding of the lingualstatus of the proper name. Frisian has four types of hypocoristic names, viz. diminutive names, ‘real’ hypocoristics, names ending in -/i/ (-<y>), and shortened names. The latter are the subject of this article. Shortenend names are argued to be in accordance with the scheme ‘shortened name = diminutive name minus diminutive suffix’. This means that there is a strong formal relationship between these two name types, for which ample evidence is put forward. These names derive from diminutive names by omitting the diminutive suffix. There is currently a controversy regarding the lexical (morphemic) status of the consonantal root in the Semitic languages. Bat-El (1994) and Ratcliffe (1997) have argued against the lexical status of the consonantal root in Hebrew and Arabic, respectively. However, Prunet, Béland, and Idrissi (2000) present Arabic aphasic evidence supporting the lexical (morphemic) status of the consonantal root for Arabic. In this article we offer supporting evidence from Arabic hypocoristics for the morphemic status of the consonantal root. We argue that hypocoristic formation is an output-to-output word fo

The paper provides an optimality-theoretic analysis of the prosodic structure and stress patterns in templatic and non-templatic hypocoristics in Hebrew. It is designed to illustrate the emergence of the trochaic foot, whose role elsewhere in the language is rather limited. The trochaic foot has been shown to determine the structure of templatic hypocoristics in various languages; this is also true in Hebrew. In addition, it plays a major role in Hebrew non-templatic hypocoristics, which on the surface look like simple constructions of base+suffix. The trochaic foot does not delimit the number

Recent work has argued that sound symbolism plays a much larger part in language than previously believed, given the assumption of the arbitrariness of the sign. A slate of recent papers on Pokémonastics, for example, has found sound symbolic associations to be rampant in Pokémon names cross-linguistically. In this paper, we explore a real-world dataset that parallels Pokémon, in which human players similarly have physical attributes of weight, height, and power: Major League Baseball. We investigated phonological correlations between baseball player statistics and their given first names, cho

The article presents first names and derivatives derived from first names, used in families in Warmia in the 19th century. The material was gathered from the work of W. Barczewski, Kiermasy in Warmia. Names in Warmian families were passed down from generation to generation and given in accordance with family tradition.
The selection of names was scarce. First names were rare in common circulation, more often short names and deminutive-hypocoristic forms created with a small number of formants were used. The number of diminutive or playful female names was limited. These were created by n

The attention is partially also given to comparison with Czech – in contrast to standard Slovak where vocative forms have declined similarly as in the dialects of Central Slovakia, the vocative forms in standard Czech are still alive. Abstract This article describes the semantic values of reduplication in Barunga Kriol – an English-based creole of northern Australia –, with a focus on its expressive functions. Barunga Kriol reduplication has two types of functions. Its most frequent meaning is aspectual atelicity. In addition, it has a number of expressive meanings and connotations: hypocoristic usages; descriptions of children’s games and imitations; and a softening role in imperatives and reprimands. Contrary to the aspectual value of reduplication which is iconically motivated, expressive values are motivated by the prag

The article characterizes the names of sweets, including anthroponyms, from the point of view of syntactic structure. Four groups of pragmatonyms are analyzed. The first group includes names that formally correspond to Russian anthroponymic formulas (one-, two- and three-component), which determines the novelty of the research. Among the one-component formulas, the formulas “Name” (full anthroponym) and “Surname” are highlighted. Within the framework of the subgroup of two-component formulas, the names built according to the models “First name + Middle Name” and “First name + Last name” have b

In this paper, a short history of Basque anthroponymy is made, starting from Antiquity and going through the Roman period, the Middle Ages, the Modern Age and the Contemporary Age. For each of these periods, the stock of the most frequent person names is presented, by synthesizing a variety of works by other authors, who in turn depend on the kind of sources that we have for each period. As in other parts of Europe, an autochthonous repertoire of anthroponyms dominates until the 11th century, either of Aquitanian/Basque etymology or borrowed (mainly from Romance), but deep-rooted in the Basque

Since it is part of the Indo-European language family, the Illyrian language shows some Indo-European regularities that we can also observe in the Greek and South Slavic world. According to Fick-Bechtel, whose work follows that of Rendić-Miočević in his work Ilirska onomastika na latinskim natpisima Dalmacije, names can be divided into complex names, derivations and abbreviated/hypocoristic names. Due to the lack of historical data, it is far more difficult to categorize Illyrian names compared to their Greek and Slavic counterparts. Inscriptions in Dalmatia carry names such as Ditus, Tritus,

<p>Valencian hypocoristics constitute a domain in which morphology seems to be at rescue when phonological problems arise. The prosodic requirements of the truncated form (a disyllabic left-headed foot) determine the insertion of an inflectional exponent, i.e., 'morphological epenthesis'. The grammar avoids the insertion of regular epenthetic material and favors the choice of an exponent already listed in the lexicon.
