Abstract:
The problem of specifying representative specimens to serve as vouchers or ground truth specimens for species is viewed from a perspective of object recognition based on training using exemplars recognized by personal perception. In taxonomy, an ‘exemplar’ mirrors the hypodigm concept of Simpson, which refers to certain specimens being unequivocal members of a species. His concept has been discarded in most taxonomies because he did not provide procedures that distinguished it from ‘material’ or ‘sample’. However, his underlying view of a morphospecies was of a group united by shared character

The region of Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, is one of the most important karstic areas of the Brazilian Quaternary due to the faunistic diversity of living and extinct forms. Among them, some taxa remain poorly studied, as is the case of Calomys anoblepas Winge 1887. Despite the recent allocation of the taxon within Juliomys, its description and morphological analysis are condensed, based on comparative few specimens and on few informative characters. In this study, we investigate characters proposed to distinguish species of Juliomys, and reevaluate the taxonomic status of the fossil Jul

Dakotaraptor steiniis a recently described dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Hell Creek Formation of South Dakota. Included within theD. steinihypodigm are three elements originally identified as furculae, one of which was made part of the holotype specimen. We show that the elements described asD. steini‘furculae’ are not theropod dinosaur furculae, but are rather trionychid turtle entoplastra referable to cf.Axestemys splendida. The hypodigm ofD. steinishould be adjusted accordingly.

Abstract:
Abstract The phylogenetic affinities of Homo antecessor, a hominin dating from the early Middle Pleistocene of Europe, are still unclear. In this study we conducted a comprehensive review of the TD6 hypodigm within the context of the historical development of paleoanthropological issues concerning this species. H. antecessor, based on all available craniofacial features to date, displays a midfacial morphology very similar to specimens attributed to Classic Homo erectus, suggesting that H. antecessor is the geographical European variant of Classic H. erectus.

Abstract:
A morphological and morphometrical study is performed on a collection of kuehneotheriid isolated molars (uppers and lowers) from the Late Triassic of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). It is shown that individual and random variability is dominant in this hypodigm and that, for this reason, no specific trend can be recognised which could validly isolate it taxonomically from the British taxon Kuehneotherium praecursoris. Wear facets are analysed and a progressive wear series as well as the occlusion pattern are reconstructed.

Abstract:
The cranial and mandibular fragments of the medium-sized canid from the Early Pleistocene locality of Taurida cave (about 1.8–1.5 Ma) in Crimea are described and included in the hypodigm of the species Canis etruscus Forsyth Major, 1877, a common member of the Late Villafranchian fauna of the Circum-Mediterranean region. This species is reported for the first time from the Northern Black Sea region. The discovered evidence reinforce previous published idea regarding the periodically use of the Taurida cave by canids and other large predators as a den and shelter.

Abstract:
The original hypodigm of the controversial mid-Cretaceous Moroccan dinosaur Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis is redescribed, and the diagnosis of the taxon is revised. Unambiguously referred material is restricted to cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae sharing apomorphies with the holotype. A newly recognized diagnostic character of Sigilmassasaurus is the absence of anterior and posterior interzygapophyseal laminae of the neural arch, so that the neural spine directly meets the dorsal margin of the neural canal. A phylogenetic analysis supports the inclusion of Sigilmassasaurus in Tetanurae bu

Abstract This chapter introduces the hominin fossil record by using two alternative hominin taxonomies, a “splitting” one and a “lumping” one, and reviews the taxa within each of six crude grades. It uses tables to provide summaries of each taxon, including the regions of the skeleton represented within each hypodigm. Finally, we focus on the fossil evidence from the relatively well-dated East African hominin fossil record that spans the time interval between 2.5 and 1.5 Myr. We indicate the quality and quantity of the fossil evidence available within each taxon for the anatomical regions (i.e
