Abstract:
As different connecting means in Chinese and English, parataxis and hypotaxis have always been the focus of discussion and research by Chinese and foreign scholars. This pair of concepts has been studied for a long time, and after years of supplement and improvement, the concepts of parataxis and hypotaxis have been very mature and widely used in the translation practice of various styles. Therefore, the authors give an overview of the research on parataxis and hypotaxis from the aspects of the proposal, development and application of the concepts. Apart from that, the authors also analyze the reasons of parataxis and hypotaxis from the following two perspectives: (1) grammar and syntax, (2) culture and thinking modes. Through this study, the authors hope to further improve the accuracy and fluency of translation between Chinese and English based on theories of parataxis and hypotaxis, and also hope to find some reasonable explanations to the Chinese and Western cultural conflicts.

Abstract:
Hypotaxis has been found since the earliest records of Vedic, especially for relative and adverbial functions. However, some adverbial relations more often resort to alternative structures such as clause juxtaposition, nominalization, or particles. The principles underlying the inconsistent representation of hypotaxis remain unclear. My analysis of clause linkage strategies in the Rig-Veda shows that non-hypotactic constructions are used preferentially for relations, such as purpose or concession, that are considered complex in studies of the ontogenesis of hypotaxis in first language acquisition. This suggests that the spread of hypotaxis follows a cognitive path of increasing complexity through the diachronic stages of Vedic. Moreover, the different entrenchment of some adverbial relations, particularly of conditionals, in Vedic with respect to ontogenetic studies allows us to refine the concept of cognitive complexity in the adverbial domain, and to consider it as a contrast to the speaker’s expectations rather than to the extra-linguistic world, as it is usually seen.

Abstract:
Logical Function is a function related to the logical relationship between one clause and another, including two aspects, namely interdependency relations and logico-semantic relations. This study demonstrated the clause complexity of the transcript of two different texts with a similar subject matter, news and editorial text from the Jakarta Post Newspaper, such as, logical function, coordination (parataxis) and subordination (hypotaxis). The method of this study highlighted the analysis of qualitative research on the issue of clause complexity based on the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in the two different texts. SFL allows the analyst to shed light on interaction with the social context to imbue texts with the meanings expressed. The results of the study show that taxis in logical function analysis of News and Editorial Text apply two taxis, they are parataxis and hypotaxis. Hypotaxis is dominantly used in both text, 85.71% in Editorial and 89.65% in News. The proportion of the dominant hypotaxis in News text was 37.93% and in Editorial 33.33%.

Abstract:
This paper contributes to the field of diachronic corpus studies of linguistic change through language contact in translation by replicating Becher’s (2011) study which found a trend from hypotaxis to parataxis in concessive clause complexes of German popular scientific articles, and examining whether a comparable trend can be found in causal clause complexes in another genre. The study draws on a one-million-word translation corpus of English business articles and their German translations, as well as on a comparable corpus of German non-translations. The corpora consist of texts published in two time periods, 1982–3 and 2008. German translations of English causal conjunctions are compared for both time periods to determine diachronic changes in causal clause complexes. The comparable corpus is then analysed to find out whether those changes also happened in non-translated language. While a trend from hypotaxis to parataxis in both corpora can be observed, hypotaxis remains more frequent than parataxis. The study also detects a shift in preference for the causal conjunctions weil, denn and da, which partly causes the decrease in hypotaxis.

Abstract:
This paper investigates complex sentence constructions in Nyulnyul (Kimberley, Western Australia). Three primary types of inter-clausal relationships — embedding (part-whole), dependence (part-part) and scope (whole-whole) — permit an initial typology of complex sentence types. This paper focuses on embedding and dependence, ignoring scope. It is argued that non-finite clauses must be embedded in a finite clause, whereas finite clauses cannot be, and may only be related to another finite clause by dependence. Dependence relations can be classified (following Halliday 1985) according to two independent emically significant parameters: parataxis vs. hypotaxis; and extension vs. elaboration vs. enhancement. The contrast between parataxis and hypotaxis is examined, and it is argued that hypotaxis involves the reduction in status of the dependent clause; consequences of this are discussed. Embedding involves nominalisation, and with this the 'entitisation' of an event, and the consequent unchallangeability of the clause.

Abstract:
Abstract It is an old and widespread assumption in historical linguistics that hypotactic structures evolved out from paratactic structures. In more recent times, the parataxis-to-hypotaxis hypothesis was associated with the assumption that syntactic structures are discourse-based. This means that hypotactic structures evolved via syntacticization, i.e., via “a process by which flat, paratactic discourse-pragmatic structures transform over time into tight, hierarchic syntactic structures” (Givón 1979: 82f.). One special aspect of this assumption is that complementizers are held to have grammaticalized from nouns, verbs, prepositions, or pronouns in bi-sentential, paratactic source structures. In this paper, I will re-evaluate the existing evidence for the parataxis-to-hypotaxis hypothesis with special focus on the emergence of complementizers. The result of the re-evaluation is that in all cases, where we have enough historical data to reconstruct the development in detail, we have to assume a source structure that already displays subordination. In most cases, the subordinate clause is a relative clause suggesting that relativization is probably the oldest form of subordination. The over-all result of the re-evaluation is that there is no reliable evidence at all for the parataxis-to-hypotaxis hypothesis in its current form.

Abstract:
Guided by the hypothesis that translation is a language contact situation that can influence language change, this study investigates a frequency shift from hypotactic to paratactic constructions in concessive and causal clauses in German management and business writing. The influence of the English SVO word order is assumed to cause language users of German to prefer verb-second, paratactic constructions to verb-final, hypotactic ones. The hypothesis is tested using a 1 million word diachronic corpus containing German translations and their source texts as well as a corpus of German non-translations. The texts date from 1982–3 and 2008, which allows a diachronic analysis of changes in the way English causal and concessive structures have been translated. The analysis shows that in the translations, parataxis is indeed becoming more frequent at the expense of hypotaxis, a phenomenon that, to some extent, also occurs in the non-translations. Based on a corpus of unedited draft translations, it can be shown that translators rather than editors are responsible for this shift. Most of the evidence, however, suggests that the shift towards parataxis is not predominantly caused by language contact with English. Instead, there seems to be a development towards syntactically simpler constructions in this genre, which is most evident in the strong tendency towards sentence-splitting and an increased use of sentence-initial conjunctions in translations and non-translations. This simplification seems to be compensated for, to some extent, by the establishment of pragmatic distinctions between specific causal and concessive conjunctions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis aims to highlight the originality of French (hypotactic) and Chinese (paratactic) languages and the reasons of their differences. Falling within contrastive linguistics mostly theoretical, this study focuses on the comparisons with regard to three aspects. Firstly, the general diachronic comparisons of French and Chinese allow us to better understand the affiliations between Latin and French, between archaic Chinese and contemporary Chinese. Secondly, to show their original character – hypotactic in Latin and French, paratactic in contemporary and archaic Chinese, the comparisons are implemented between French and Chinese, and between their origins, Latin and archaic Chinese, on three syntactic aspects: the word order, the correspondence between word classes and syntactic functions in the simple sentence and the ratio of proposals in the complex sentence. Finally, the comparison of philosophical reflections on language between the Greek antiquity and the Chinese antiquity, and the presentation of cultural divergence between individuality and global nature showing the Western and Chinese intellectual originality, allow us to detect from a philosophical and cultural perspective the underlying reason for their different original characters

This thesis analyzes the function of two grammatical forms which bring about the articulation of sentences through adverbial hypotaxis, a mechanism of textual connection characterized by the establishment of semantic-logical relationships, signaling the communicative intentions of the users of the language. These grammatical forms – sem(without) and the conjunctional periphrase semque (unless) - are placed in distinct grammatical classes: preposition and conjunction respectively, due to grammatical conventions. These conventions attribute to the first term, the function of transposing a nominal syntagm into an adnominal or adverbial adjunct within the sentence; and to the second, that of transposing an absolute sentence to a new structure, within which it occupies the position of a constituent, taking up, among other functions, that of the adverbial adjunct, under the form of a sentence. In this perspective, I address the syntactical and semantic re-categorization of the above mentioned preposition, defending the view that it figures as a conjunction not only when it is part of the conjunctional periphrase, but also in in the presence of the verb in the infinitive form, forming reduced infinitive sentences. Using Functional Theory, which analyzes the principles which govern the natural use of language, I discuss the cognitive and interactional motivations which cause the change. With specific reference to the treatment of the process of grammaticalization, I have used the North American branch of Functionalism to explain the fluctuation of category and semantic and discursive fluctuations experienced by this linguistic item. From the observation of data, I have deduced patterns of typical uses of reduced as well as highly evolved sentence structures, emphasizing that these two structures are not always interchangeable. The corpus from which I inventorythe syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of the transpositers under investigation, correlating textual and interpersonal functions, is constituted by texts from the argumentative sphere- articles of opinion, editorials and interviews from weekly magazines. I conclude that though the preposition sem does not introduce argumentative terms, it belongs to the listof prepositions which are moderately grammaticalized, and is susceptible to change, exhibiting a diversity of semantic nuances similar to conjunctions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The claim that parataxis precedes hypotaxis in the history of English is an idea with a long pedigree; however, the empirical evidence for it is limited. In this chapter, I revisit the question of parataxis and hypotaxis diachronically, focusing on two different claims. The first is the idea that finite clausal complementation emerged from clausal juxtaposition. Following Axel-Tober (2012, 2017), I argue that this scenario is implausible. The second is the idea that the proportion of subordinate clauses increases gradually over time. This quantitative claim can be assessed using parsed historical corpora. No gradual increase can be observed; rather, we see substantial genre-conditioned variation. I conclude that the idea of parataxis preceding hypotaxis might be ready for retirement.

Abstract:
Abstract Middle English and early Scots poets, like any writers in any era, fitted words together into clauses and clauses together into bigger frameworks: the business of syntax. This chapter explores these matters of order. An opening discussion takes as an example the beginning of Hoccleve’s Regiment of Princes. The chapter then considers the how verse form and syntax interacted in both alternating-metre and alliterative verse, with attention to rhyme-breaking, open and closed rhyme structures, and poetic lists. Finally, the chapter examines subordination, and contrasts the different uses and purposes of hypotaxis and parataxis in John Lydgate’s Siege of Thebesand in Sir Orfeo.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses how readers argue over multiple meanings in Homer, as well as Alexander Pope's translation of the Iliad. The conflict over the ambiguities of the Iliad was a small part of a broader reckoning of Homer, which itself was only the battle, not the war. The exchanges detailed here reveal less about the culture of Homeric scholarship than about the hermeneutic moves available to neoclassical critics with a shared canon of linguistic assumptions—a canon subtending the many differences between, say, the Ancients and Moderns. Ambiguity is here an artifice manipulated in a variety of ways to negotiate the text. Pope had his own, nuanced relationship to the ambiguities of the Iliad. It has long been argued that he misses the feel and tone of Homer's epic, and certain celebrity responses to this effect—from the dismissive to the thoughtful—have become canonical. However, one of Pope's merits is that he consistently brings out the poem's double meanings, often by giving both possible senses of a phrase or line in either parataxis or hypotaxis.
