Abstract:
While it is known that social policies influence the organization of employment and family life, this knowledge is rarely used to understand women's health. The current study uses feminist welfare state theory to examine socioeconomic inequalities in women's health dynamics in countries differing by the extent to which their social policies encourage male breadwinning and female caring/homemaking. The pathways underlying these inequalities are also investigated. Socioeconomic inequalities in health are hypothesized to be largest in strong male-breadwinner states (Britain/Germany), smallest in

Abstract:
The political concept of corporatism is used to analyze Catholic-sponsored organizations as providers of US welfare-state services. Corporatism nowadays characterizes a political arrangement by which professional and industrial sectors acquire state-like powers in order to coordinate social productivity. Though corporatism usually refers to nongovernmental fields which acquire government-like status, this dissertation takes a somewhat reverse perspective by focusing on the welfare state, an area which by definition already is governmental, yet by 1996 US welfare reform legislation is slated to

Abstract:
Research on belief perseverance--the finding that people cling to initial beliefs to an unwarranted extent--has demonstrated that a belief persists to the extent that there are more explanations available to the believer to support the original belief than to support alternative beliefs. Thus, explanatory evidence that supports an alternative target belief may be more effective in changing prior beliefs than statistical evidence. In an experiment testing this hypothesis, subjects read explanatory (biological) information and/or statistical (epidemiological) information supporting the belief th

Abstract:
The persisting high level of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in South Africa is a major concern for national public health and social policies. Accordingly, reducing the incidence of teen pregnancy and childbearing is one the priorities of the South African national adolescent reproductive health program. To inform teen pregnancy prevention program managers and policy makers about their needs, research on the risk and protective factors associated with teenage childbearing is necessary. Based on a framework that places adolescent childbearing under the influence of contextual factors (e.

Abstract:
The modeling strategy is designed to highlight the impact of health level’s uncertainty on using teledermatology in dermatology treatment. The option-pricing theory is followed very closely to develop a dynamic stochastic model for the optimal timing to use teledermatology. Its main value-added consists in the concrete application to a problem in medical decision taking, i.e. to patients with skin-care diseases. In the period from January 2017 to June 2017, a total of 152 patients were sent by 24 PCCs of the public health system to the Portuguese Dermatology Department of Hospital Garcia

Abstract:
Since Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic, it has killed more than two million people worldwide. Some directly due to complications and symptoms of the virus others due to lack of resources to take care of all the patients affected by it. A proper triage can go a long way to an efficient resource allocation, which makes it extremely relevant to understand which factors can affect Covid-19 complications or mortality risk. With the input form front-line Portuguese doctors, it was possible to identify the main comorbidities and health issues that can influence patient outcome: age, cancer, im
