INTRODUCTION: Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand are a fast-growing population, and research shows that they do not experience the same health benefits others do. While effort has been made to better understand the needs of this population, the results remain largely unchanged. Additionally, practice methods and research to better understand the needs of this group tend to accommodate the more dominant Pacific populations, while less research has gone into understanding the smaller Pacific ethnic populations such as I-Kiribati. Abstract:
Nutrition transitions are key contributors to the obesity epidemic plaguing South Pacific Island countries (SPIC). Prior to European contact and colonisation, traditional Pacifica diets consisted mainly of root crops, indigenous fruits and vegetables, freshwater proteins and seafood(1). This diet has been replaced by diets high in processed foods which are high in salt, sugar and unhealthy fats(2). Various political, economic, environmental and socio-cultural factors have been associated with the proliferation of unhealthy foods in Pacifica diets. However, very few studies have examined how th

AbstractAustralia's 2018 introduction of the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) broadened the scope and duration of labour mobility pathways available to Pacific Island countries. Although longer term temporary migration schemes like the PLS expand livelihood opportunities for migrant households, they also create challenges related to the maintenance of personal relationships and care practices during transnational family separation. Though pressing concerns for Pacific Island governments, these issues have received little scholarly attention. Drawing on in‐depth interviews with migrants and their ho

ABSTRACTPisonia grandis, now threatened, is an important source of soil organic matter on atoll islands and historically composed the dominant canopy of many atoll ecosystems across the Pacific. How the tree manages water to exist across wide precipitation gradients is poorly understood. This study tests the hypotheses that P. grandis is using organic‐rich soils that develop under their canopy and soil layering where organic soils contact carbonate sands as part of their water management strategy. We analysed the chemical and physical properties of soils from two atolls in the central Pacific

ABSTRACTGiant clams (Tridacna and Hippopus) are large marine bivalves occupying tropical and subtropical reefs in the Indo‐Pacific. Giant clam populations have declined in many areas of the Indo‐Pacific and continue to be threatened by harvesting and environmental change. The small giant clam (Tridacna maxima) occurs throughout the Indo‐Pacific and has been subject to several phylogeographic studies across its range. However, given its broad range, there are several areas where the genetic diversity and connectivity of T. maxima populations has not been characterised. Here, we analyse the mito

Climate change is a worldwide phenomenon that is gradually transforming every aspect of our world. A consequence of the many environmental effects, a significant humanitarian outcome of it is climate migration. Not covered by the 1951 Convention on Refugees and lacking any other comprehensive legislation, climate migrants are unprotected and vulnerable. Considering the high possibility of further environmental degradation, this paper explores the current situations of the impacted people by examining the legal definition outlined in the 1951 Convention and by looking at ways to ameliorate the
