Abstract:
Fishing gear in the Baltic is often raided by grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). The seals remove the fish and damage the nets, or entangle themselves and drown. In order to develop ways of mitigating the seals-fisheries conflict, it is important to know exactly how the seals locate the fishing gear. A field experiment was conducted in order to clarify whether seals use their vision above water to do this. Bait (herring; Clupea harengus) was attached to the anchor lines of buoys of the type that is commonly used to mark the position of fishing gear. In all, 643 buoys were set. Some of the buoys

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter analyses how ethnic transnational identities are manifested and negotiated on the social networking sites used by Latvian migrants. Although migrants as well as other people use various personal media, including Skype, chat apps such as WhatsApp and telephones, social networking sites stand out with the diversity of functions in migrant communication. This includes one-to-one exchanges, group communication and the ability to locate and connect with users who may or may not be familiar offline. We argue that social networking sites and particularly thematic groups on these sites that migrants create and join serve as forums or bulletin boards where they exchange practical information and are able to communicate with other Latvians who live nearby – and that these uses have implications for the communication of identity. The empirical data in the chapter comes from 20 semi-structured interviews with Latvian migrants who live in a variety of countries and were recruited for the study on social networking sites, as well as survey data, all of which were collected within the research project The Emigrant Communities of Latvia: National Identity, Transnational Relations and Diaspora Politics. The results demonstrate that migrant interactions on social networking sites do not necessarily lead to the homogenisation of migrants’ conception of what ‘being a Latvian’ means. The increased ability to maintain associations with diverse online and offline social circles provides a migrant with a variety of identity elements to associate with. As a result, hybrid identities may emerge. A migrant can identify with the host society yet still reject some of its characteristics – and choose Latvian alternatives instead.

Abstract:
AbstractOver the past decade, agile methods have become the favored choice for projects undertaken in rapidly changing environments. The success of agile methods in small, co-located projects has inspired companies to apply them in larger projects. Agile scaling frameworks, such as Large Scale Scrum and Scaled Agile Framework, have been invented by practitioners to scale agile to large projects and organizations. Given the importance of agile scaling frameworks, research on those frameworks is still limited. This paper presents our findings from an empirical survey answered by the methodologists of 15 agile scaling frameworks. We explored (i) framework evolution, (ii) main reasons behind their creation, (iii) benefits, and (iv) challenges of adopting these frameworks. The most common reasons behind creating the frameworks were improving the organization’s agility and collaboration between agile teams. The most commonly claimed benefits included enabling frequent deliveries and enhancing employee satisfaction, motivation, and engagement. The most mentioned challenges were using frameworks as cooking recipes instead of focusing on changing people’s culture and mindset.

Abstract:
Part III of the book focusses on Zvërnec, a small village located in the southern part of the Lagoon of Nartë, on a promontory over a small gulf (Gjiri i Vogël), which looks like a miniature of the ‘great’ Gulf of Vlorë (Gjiri i Vlorës). Zvërnec is part of the Protected Landscape Vjosë-Nartë and is well-known for the suggestive island which hosts the Byzantine church of the Dormition of Mary (Category I Cultural Monument), which every year attracts many faithful and tourists alike, both Albanian and foreign. In the first chapters, the importance of the intangible heritage is stressed. In Zvërnec the cultural traditions in the lagoon area play a pivotal role, especially the fishing tradition together with the culinary tradition connected to sea products. In the following chapters, the multiple aspects of the tangible heritage are analysed. The protected landscape of Vjosë-Nartë requested a special attention. It includes a number of habitats, which constitute one of the most significant assets in terms of biodiversity at a national level. Unfortunately, both active and dismantled industrial sites present in the area as well as questionable development policies, threaten the fragile and delicate lagoon landscape. As far as the built heritage is concerned, the Church of the Dormition of Mary, traditional dwellings and the abandoned military heritage were thoroughly analysed. For each of the aforementioned issues, the theoretical and historical analysis are closely bound to an evaluation of those features of the cultural heritage that could be enhanced to guarantee a sustainable tourism development of the area. Each chapter ends with a consistent set of specific intervention strategies. They are substantive tools for action aimed at public and private local actors.

Abstract:
Abstract Catastrophic forest fires hit the European part of Russian Federation during summer 2010 as result of a two-month-long period with temperatures above the average by 10 °C coupled with an unusually long drought period. Even though forest fires are usual for Russia, these are typically located in the sparsely populated Asian part of the country. As a consequence of the 2010 summer fires in the densely populated European part of Russia, the mass media poured forth reports of burning forests, villages, victims, about lost crops by fires. The situation was further dramatized by the fact that the extreme smoke from these fires reached Moscow. Seventeen million people lived in the regions where the state of emergency has been declared, and another 10 million in Moscow suffered from smoke. Over one-third of the population of the Russian Federation lived in those regions where the fires were very intense in summer 2010. Still, the main question remained after the disaster which I attempt to answer in this chapter; was the heat the only cause?

Finally, I examine the arguments to those, like Altman, who locate a “right to pornography” in the right to sexual autonomy. A reactionless machine will not apply reaction forces and moments on the mounting base during motion. This article presents the theory for design of a reactionless planar parallel mechanism. The salient features of this design are: (i) it uses auxiliary parallelograms to locate the center of mass of each leg at the base, (ii) choice of geometric and inertial parameters to satisfy the recationless conditions, (iii) selection of trajectory to achieve a reactionless design. We illustrate the reactionless feature of such a mechanism through computer simulations.

Abstract Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) is a useful tool for both electrical failure analysis (EFA) and physical failure analysis (PFA). In this paper, the root cause of a physical failure in an analysis image was verified from the evidence of two-dimensional AFM profile depth measurement. The other analysis technique, which is electrical parameter extraction by contacting I-V spectroscopy measurement, was also utilized to locate the possible defects. As a result, the failure mechanism was illustrated with an AFM topography image, which showed the silicon surface profile after remo

Due to the relatively higher cost of energy (COE) for the photovoltaic (PV) systems, it is crucial to locate the maximum power point (MPP) so as to increase the system efficiency. The nonlinear PV characteristic curve and the MPP depend on PV’s intrinsic characteristics and environment conditions such as solar irradiation intensity and temperature. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control serves to seek the MPP of the PV system with the unpredicted environment uncertainties. In this paper, the adaptive extremum seeking control (AESC) scheme is investigated for the PV MPPT, which optimizes t

Abstract This paper reports on an investigation that aims to characterise the technical content of documentary information used by engineers within two aerospace companies. The work has been carried out in order to gain an understanding of the technical requirements for future information systems to support designers. A rigorous analysis of the textual content of exemplar information objects provided by engineers is initially described. From this analysis, Object Content Profiles for three distinct types of text-based objects are identified: (i) correspondence, (ii) technical (report) objects

Excavation continues to be a leading cause of damage to underground facilities in the United States. Excavation damage was cited as the cause in 20% of the significant pipeline incidents in 2007. Effective damage prevention programs are necessary to protect underground facilities and to ensure public health and safety, environmental protection and continuity of vital services. Central to all damage prevention efforts is effective communication of accurate and timely information among excavators, one-call centers and underground facility operators. Within the last 20 years at least 200 supercarriers have been lost, due to severe weather conditions. In many cases the cause of accidents is believed to be ‘rouge waves’, which are individual waves of exceptional wave height or abnormal shape. I situ measurements of extreme waves are scarce and most observations are reported by ship masters after the encounter. In this paper a global set of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is used to detect extreme ocean wave events. The recent move towards subsea oil and gas production brings about a requirement to locate process equipment in deepwater installations. Furthermore, there is a drive towards omitting well stream separation functionality, as this adds complexity and cost to the subsea installation. This in turn leads to technical challenges for the subsea installed pumps and compressors that are now required to handle multiphase flow of varying gas to liquid ratios. This highlights the necessity for a strong research focus on multiphase flow impact on rotordynamic properties and thereby operational stability o
