Abstract:
The Savonius-style wind turbine, a class of vertical axis wind turbines, can be a viable option for small scale off-grid electricity generation in the context of renewable energy applications. A better self-starting capability at low wind speeds is one of the major advantages of this turbine. However, as reported in open literature, the power coefficient of the conventional design is found to be inferior as compared to its counterparts. In this regard, a new blade design has been developed. In the present investigation, the aerodynamic performance of this newly designed turbine is assessed und

Mesquita Moreira, Mauricio. Fear of China: Is there a Future for Manufacturing in Latin America? Inter-American Development Bank, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008603.

Full text
Abstract:
China¿s emergence has raised pointed questions about the future of manufacturing in Latin America. This paper looks at this challenge and its implications. It begins by asking: Does manufacturing still matter for Latin America? It argues that the region cannot afford to turn its back to a well-proven road to development. It then moves on to show that endowments, productivity, scale and the government¿s role, all work together to make China a formidable competitor. The importance of this challenge is confirmed by an analysis of the trade data, which suggests a small impact so far, but a disquie

Abstract:
The causes of informality are many and range from imperfections in existing legislation and segmentation of the labor markets to macroeconomic adjustment programs and globalization. Some see in informality a mechanism for escaping unemployment, while for others it generates a spirit of entrepreneurship. The study has two objectives: i) To evaluate the degree of poverty and lack of social protection of informal workers in three of the region¿s countries: Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. ii) To recommend mechanisms for broadening social security and assistance coverage of informal w

Elimination of emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from confined animal and feeding operations (CAFO) using an adsorption/liquid-redox process with biological regeneration. United States Department of Agriculture, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2008.7695589.bard.

Abstract:
The project was originally aimed at investigating and developing new efficient methods for cost effective removal of ammonia (NH₃) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO), in particular broiler and laying houses (NH₃) and hog houses (H₂S). In both cases, the principal idea was to design and operate a dedicated air collection system that would be used for the treatment of the gases, and that would work independently from the general ventilation system. The advantages envisaged: (1) if collected at a point close to the source of generation, pollutants would
