Abstract:
This paper compares the cases of female ailments recorded in the Epidaurian Miracles Cures (iamata) with the theory and therapeutics of the Hippocratic gynecological texts as a means of testing the extent of the assumptions shared between temple and Hippocratic medicine. I argue that where temple and Hippocratic practice hold common ground, it is readily explicable through widely circulating and historically rooted cultural presuppositions regarding female physiology and pathology, rather than through scientific borrowings. Rather than representing complementary outlets of medical care in which Asklepios specialized in “hopeless” cases, I suggest that the iamata permit us to observe a process in which parallel medical traditions branched out from a common cultural substratum, and that more nuance is required in framing the relationship between Greek naturalist and religious medicine.

Abstract:
This study explores the Greco-Roman memorialization of healings through material culture as a point of comparison for the Gospels’ miracle traditions. Special attention is given to the ex-votos left at healing shrines and especially the Iamata inscriptions connected with the Asclepius cult. This corpus of evidence brings into focus a series of dynamics that help illuminate the stories of Jesus’ two healings of a paralytic (John 5:1-15; Mark 2:1-10). The comparisons help clarify both the common memorializing supports that informed and sustained the memory of Jesus transmitted in the Gospels, as well as the distinctive relationship of the Christian cult to certain specific places where memories of Jesus where preserved.

Abstract:
Segmental selective adrenal venous sampling (sAVS) elucidates an intraadrenal aldosterone activity map (IAMap), which allows us to design a novel surgical treatment strategy for patients with primary aldosteronism. We evaluated the usefulness of sAVS by analyzing 278 patients with whom we had prospectively used IAMap using the criteria of sAVS for surgical indication between 2009 and 2015. We evaluated its diagnostic accuracy using pathological and postsurgical biochemical and clinical outcomes. One hundred twenty and 158 patients were diagnosed with unilateral and bilateral disease, respectively, through sAVS. The concordance of lateralization diagnosis with computed tomography imaging was 66.6%. Among the unilateral patients, we performed partial adrenalectomy in 68 patients whose IAMap showed focal aldosterone hypersecretion from computed tomography-detectable tumor in the affected adrenal gland. All of them achieved complete biochemical success 1 year after surgery. Furthermore, 25 of 158 bilateral disease patients underwent surgical resection because they were preoperatively diagnosed as bilateral aldosterone-producing adenomas by IAMap. These cases showed complete or partial biochemical success (28.0% and 72.0%, respectively); 36.0% showed complete clinical success. Pathological studies demonstrated that all 145 resected specimens possessed aldosterone-producing adenoma or multiple nodules (132 and 13 cases, respectively), and none showed diffuse hyperplasia. IAMap accurately diagnosed both bilateral and unilateral aldosterone-producing adenomas and diffuse hyperplasia before surgery. sAVS allows a novel surgical strategy for selected PA patients with favorable outcomes.

The ἰαματικά, a collection of seven short epigrams about healing grouped together and so labelled in the Milan papyrus attributed to Posidippus, present another useful source of information about the cult and cures of Asclepius (AB 95–101; P Mil. Vogl. VIII 309, XIV.30–XV.22). Brief though the epigrams are (all are four lines in length except the first, which is eight lines), they accord well with the picture of the cult presented by material, epigraphic and other literary evidence.

Abstract:
The dragonfly algorithm (DA) is a new intelligent algorithm based on the theory of dragonfly foraging and evading predators. DA exhibits excellent performance in solving multimodal continuous functions and engineering problems. To make this algorithm work in the binary space, this paper introduces an angle modulation mechanism on DA (called AMDA) to generate bit strings, that is, to give alternative solutions to binary problems, and uses DA to optimize the coefficients of the trigonometric function. Further, to improve the algorithm stability and convergence speed, an improved AMDA, called IAMDA, is proposed by adding one more coefficient to adjust the vertical displacement of the cosine part of the original generating function. To test the performance of IAMDA and AMDA, 12 zero-one knapsack problems are considered along with 13 classic benchmark functions. Experimental results prove that IAMDA has a superior convergence speed and solution quality as compared to other algorithms.

Abstract:
Divine healing has been often seen in opposition to human healing. The two spheres, have been considered as separate, both in space and in terms of elements involved. Asclepian sanctuaries have been mostly presented as domains of exclusively divine intervention, without any involvement of the human factor, possibly with the sole exception of dream interpretation. However, the written testimonies of temple cures, both those in the form of cure inscriptions dedicated in sanctuaries and the literary accounts of the incubation experience, give us reasons to suppose that the practical side of the functioning of the asklepieia could have assumed the involvement of human medicine, with the extent of this involvement differing in various epochs. Regardless of physicians' participation or its lack in the procedure, the methods applied in sanctuary healing appear to have evolved in parallel to the developments in medicine and their popular perception. Archaeological finds as well as the image of Asclepius as the god of medicine itself seem to confirm this. Nevertheless, by no means should these connections between the two spheres be treated as transforming the space of religious meaning into hospitals functioning under the auspices of a powerful god. Although acknowledging them does entail inclusion of human medicine within the space dedicated to Asclepius, it does not thereby deny the procedure of incubation its religious and metaphysical dimension. On the contrary, it shows that to the Greek mind divine and human healing were not mutually exclusive, but overlapped and coincided with each other, proving that the Greek sense of rationality was quite different from the modern and could comprise far more than what we call today "scientific thinking".

Abbas, Mohamad. "The control of auxin homeostasis through the regulation of IAMT1 by DELLA proteins." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/39348.

Full text
Abstract:
The plant hormones gibberellins (GAs) and auxin display overlapping activities in the regulation of multiple developmental processes, including the differential growth that mediates the response to tropic stimuli and the formation of the apical hook. Several mechanisms have been proposed that explain the interaction between these two hormones, such as the regulation of auxin transport by GAs, and the regulation of GA biosynthesis by auxin. GAs are known to exert their action at the transcriptional level by promoting the degradation of DELLA proteins, which in turn interact with numerous transcription factors and modulate their activity. We have identified INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID METHYLTRANSFERASE 1 (IAMT1) as one of the earliest target genes upregulated after conditional expression of the DELLA protein GAI in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this Thesis, we have addressed two main issues: (1) the contribution of IAMT1 to auxin homeostasis and its biological relevance; and (2) the molecular mechanism by which DELLAs are able to induce the expression of IAMT1. Using combinations of iamt1 loss-of-function mutants and reporter lines for auxin accumulation and activity, we have found that IAMT1 activity is essential for proper generation and maintenance of the auxin gradients that underlie differential growth. According to our results, the role of IAMT1 would be to restrict polar auxin transport especially during the response to tropic stimuli, preventing excessive auxin accumulation in the responding tissues, and IAMT1 exerts this function, at least in part, by inhibiting the expression of the PIN genes, encoding auxin efflux carriers. Regarding the regulation of IAMT1 expression by DELLAs, dissection of the promoter, in silico analysis of putative DELLA partners, and molecular genetic analysis of reporter lines has allowed us to identify two mechanisms with different relevance depending on the environmental conditions, and through different cis elements. In etiolated seedlings, DELLA proteins are recruited by DORNRÖSCHEN (DRN) to the IAMT1 promoter to induce IAMT1 expression. In the light and in a temperature-dependent manner, DELLA proteins inhibit the DNA-binding activity of PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR4 (PIF4) and BRI1 EMS-SUPPRESSOR1(BES1), which act as repressors of IAMT1 expression. The work presented here highlights how GAs may affect local accumulation of auxin, being particularly relevant in processes that involve differential growth.

Sarkar, Manju. "Lambda Bipolar Transistor (LBT) in Static Random Access Memory Cell." Thesis, Indian Institute of Science, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/124.

Full text
Abstract:
With a view to reduce the number of components in a Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) cell, the feasibility of use of Lambda Bipolar Transistor (LBT)in the bistable element of the cell has been explored under the present study. The LBT under consideration here comprises of an enhancement mode MOSFET integrated with a parasitic bipolar transistor so as to perform as a negative resistance device. LBTs for the study have been fabricated and analysed. The devices have been shown to function at much lower voltage and current levels than those reported earlier/ and thus have been shown to be suitable for lower power applications. The issues of agreements and discrepancies of the experimental results with the original DC model of the device have been highlighted and discussed. The factors contributing to the drain current of the MOSFET in the LBT have been identified. It has also been shown that in the real case of an LBT in operation, the MOSFET in it does not function as a discrete device for the same conditions of voltages and current levels as in an LBT. As per the present study, it is assessed to be influenced by the presence of the BJT in operation and this effect is felt more at the lower current levels of operation. With a separate and tailored p-well implantation the possibility of fabrication of LBTs with a CMOS technology is established. Along with a couple of polysilicon resistors, the LBTs have been successfully made to perform in the common-collector configuration as the bistable storage element of SRAM cell (as proposed in the literature). The bistable element with the LBT in common-emitter mode also has been visualised and practically achieved with the fabricated devices. The WRITE transients for either case have been simulated for various levels of WRITE voltages and their time of hold. The speed of Writing achieved are found comparable with that of the standard SRAMs. The advantages and disadvantages of using the LBT in either mode have been highlighted and discussed. The power consumption of the bistable element with the LBT in either mode is however shown to be the same. A different approach of READING has been proposed to overcome the factors known to increase the cycle time. On the whole, under the present study, the proposal of using LBTs in the bistable storage element of the SRAM cell has been shown to be feasible. Such SRAM circuits can find possible applications in the fields where smaller circuit area is the major concern.

Photography is a photographer’s decisions based on light and time. A photograph is a replica of reality at the moment. In "In Between," "The Landscape of Body" and "Track," new scenes are made and the chronological orders are disorganized to describe an individual’s inner time, personal experience and imagination of the time. My artworks focus on the meaning of time, the time existing in the daily life, tradition formed in daily routines, and tradition that raises our expectations of life. Therefore, an individual may eventually dissolve into duties created by the concepts of time. Through images, the essence of truth is represented to question the existence of truth: the edited time in these images has redefined their roles as replicas of the truth at the moment. The past, the present and the future are examined via their synchronicity (Gleichzeitigkeit) to enter our personal experiences and the concepts of time. This paper divides the study of time of images into two parts. Firstly, meanings of captured images are discussed to further figure out how a photographer chooses elements and messages for his or her works. Secondly, the temporality of images are examined. Three aspects of time (of photographers, photographed objects and viewers) are extended from three intentions of images, which are used to explore the nature of time in images. As images crosses the time boundary between images and their viewers through Gleichzeitigkeit of the images, a photographer can present a past moment, while a viewer can enter into the past moment of the photographer to interpret the image.

Abstract:
Traditional methods for ergonomic evaluation do not consider the identification and assessment of mental tasks. This chapter proposes a method for the Identification and Assessment of Mental Tasks (IAMT) through the development of task flowcharts. Using a semi structured interview and a task flowchart, the mental tasks are identified and described. Applying the Cognitive Task Load Model (CTLM), a cognitive effect is assigned to every mental task identified. A theoretical/common example and a study case were developed to exemplify the proposed method. IAMT method was developed to be useful mainly in industrial environments; however, IAMT should be applied in different work contexts and environments.
