Abstract:
Abstract Shakespeare’s Blank Verse: An Alternative History is a study of both Shakespeare’s versification and its place in the history of early modern blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter). It ranges from the continental precursors of English blank verse in the early sixteenth century through the drama and poetry of Shakespeare’s contemporaries to the editing of blank verse in the eighteenth century and beyond. Alternative in its argumentation as well as its arguments, Shakespeare’s Blank Verse tries out fresh ways of thinking about meter—by shunning doctrinaire, almost mathematical ways of apprehending a writer’s versification, and by reconnecting meter to the fundamental literary, dramatic, and social questions that animate Shakespeare’s drama.

Abstract:
The focus of this chapter is the first Serbian translation of Paradise Lost, which appeared in Belgrade in 1989. It was a reprint of Djilas’s translation of the epic, published twenty years earlier in the USA. Djilas’s task of translation was also an act of intellectual rebellion and a means of keeping himself sane during his long years of incarceration in a Yugoslav prison. The chapter analyses select passages of Djilas’s translation alongside their counterparts from the original as well as with some extant Serbian renderings of the poem. This analysis demonstrates that, in his translation, Djilas successfully brought together the culturally different epic traditions of his native Montenegro and of the nearby Dalmatian coast, but he was less successful in solving the fundamental prosodic question of how to make Milton’s dense iambic pentameter fit an equally compact trochaic verse.

Abstract:
Is it possible to hear blank pentameter verse during a theatrical performance? Can an audience perceive the difference between verse and prose, or hear when the playwright alters the iambic rhythm? Is blank verse a constitutive element of the performance event, something whose handling by the actors should be used to measure a production’s success? Is the poetry the actors speak more important than the visual and narrative experience they work to create? This chapter examines some answers that have been provided to these questions by modern criticism and performance. Part 19.1 discusses scholarly conceptions of blank verse as an historical phenomenon. Part 19.2 discusses the place Shakespeare’s poetry has held in post-Renaissance engagements with Shakespeare’s plays in performance. Part 19.3 focuses on Othello in order to draw some conclusions about the historical and ideological stakes of speaking, experiencing, and criticizing dramatic poetry in live performance.
