Abstract:
The Palaearctic Pollenia haeretica species-group is revised. Two species make up the group: Pollenia haeretica Séguy, 1928 (Algeria, Tunisia, Italy) and Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930 (Morocco). Pollenia rungsi Séguy, 1953 is established as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov. Pollenia funebris Villeneuve, 1933 is treated as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov., but the name is a junior primary homonym of Pollenia funebris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863, and therefore permanently invalid. A lectotype is designated for Pollenia haeretica Séguy to fix the interpretation of the name. The syntypes of Pollenia funebris Villeneuve are probably lost.

Abstract:
AbstractThe archaic cynipoid family Ibaliidae is revised. All described taxa are included in a checklist, and keys to valid taxa are presented. Host records include larvae of several woodwasp species (Siricidae: Siricinae and Tremicinae). Ibaliidae is considered to include the East Asian genus Heteribalia Sakagami, with five valid species, and the mainly Holarctic genus Ibalia Latreille, with 13 valid species, seven in the subgenus Ibalia and six in the subgenus Tremibalia. Heteribalia aureopilosa Maa, 1949 and H. subtilis Maa, 1949 are raised from subspecies to species level. Ibalia (T.) hunanica sp. n., is described from Oriental China. Three morphs of I. (T.) anceps, differing in wing colour pattern, are recognized, and distribution records of these morphs in North America are mapped. I. scalpellator Westwood, 1837 is synonymized with I. anceps Say, 1824; I. takaehihoi Yasumatsu, 1937 with I. jakowlewi Jacobson, 1899; I.fulviceras Yang, 1991 with I. ornata Belizin, 1968; and I. yunshae Yang et Liu,1992 with I. rufipes drewseni Borries, 1891. Lectotypes are designated for I. picea Matsumura, 1912 (syn. of I. leucospoides (Hochenwarth, 1785)) and for I. japonica Matsumura, 1912.

Abstract:
AbstractSiricids and their parasitoids were reared from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L. (Pinaceae)) trees infested by Sirex noctilio F. in central New York State. Sirex noctilio accounted for 94.3% of the siricid specimens emerging, totaling 1313 specimens from six trees, with a maximum of 495 from one tree. Of the individuals emerging per tree, 20.6 ± 5.2% were female. Two native siricids, Sirex nigricornis F. and S. edwardsii Brullè, also emerged from trees but in low numbers. Three hymenopteran parasitoid species that attack siricids emerged, totaling 21.8 ± 6.4% parasitism per tree. Ibalia leucospoides ensiger Norton (Ibaliidae) was by far the most abundant parasitoid, at 20.5 ± 6.3% parasitism per tree. The percentage of female S. noctilio emerging was positively correlated with wood diameter, whereas percent parasitism by I. l. ensiger was negatively correlated with wood diameter.

Abstract:
The central aim of this thesis is to explore how natural selection shapes life history traits and behaviuors according to the ecological environment in which an animal exists. This overall framework leads to specific hypotheses concerning the reproductive, dispersal and foraging processes in the parasitoid Ibalia leucospoides. The experiments in behavioural ecology and eco-physiology in female parasitoids of Ibalia leucospoides show as main results, that (1) the proportion of the potential lifetime eggs complement that is mature at female emergence is high; (2) low dependency on adult female feeding, not only for egg maturation but also for survival and flight; (3) under our experimental conditions flight capacity depends on the morphological characteristics of the parasitoid (size and wing loading); and (4) regarding host foraging, females accurately assess differences in host patch quality from a distance without the need of displaying a sampling process; in addition that patch exploitation times depend on the information obtained from the surrounding patches. The reproductive success of I. leucospoides, a proovigenic parasitoid, is not constrained by adult food deprivation. Both the resource allocation strategy toward the different biological functions and the foraging behaviour adopted by this parasitoid species may well be in respond to habitat characteristics, such as a strongly aggregated distribution of Sirex noctilio, the host, as well as to the resources availability (i.e. host and food)

Abstract:
The tribal life and the oral traditions of black South Africans have been marginalized. The consequence of the western civilization and the apartheid regime forced people to do away from their traditional heritage and culture; they adopted the western way of life. They buried their oral tradition and only a little has survived. To save the dying culture of the art of the oral tradition we need to go out and record and document the surviving oral tradition as soon as possible. Since the art of the oral tradition is an art form conducted by an artist, it may be possible to tell the ibali likaNongqawuse by means of visual imagery. Visual images can be read and be understood easily by the public because visual forms, sings, images can make up a language for both the literate as well as the illiterate.

Ibarra, Diana Lynne. "Review and synthesis of engineered wetland treatment systems with application to phosphorus removal." Thesis, Montana State University, 2011. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2011/ibarra/IbarraD1211.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Nutrient contamination in point and non-point wastewater sources has led to an increased focus on the removal of phosphorus before reaching receiving waters. Phosphorus, typically a nutrient limiting contaminant is responsible for eutrophication and algae blooms in lakes and streams and the wastewater from agricultural, industrial and domestic sources is under continued scrutiny from the regulatory environment. Constructed wetlands mimic natural wetlands and are used worldwide for the removal of nutrients in wastewater streams but the research and applications for removal of phosphorus has lagged behind other nutrients and contaminants. This paper is an extensive literature review of construct wetlands and the ongoing applications for phosphorus removal. This review includes recent research on the mechanisms of removal, an evaluation of different plant species, a discussion of phosphorus partitioning in the wetland environment and a look at the use of chemical additives to improve the removal efficiency. Hybrid constructed wetland systems that closely mimic the biological nutrient removal systems for large scale WWTP facilities are being built around the world to improve effluent water quality and take advantage of the benefits of each type of constructed wetland. Maximizing the removal of phosphorus in wastewater will require a multi-pronged approach that includes biological, chemical and physical removal of the phosphorus in both the design phase and ongoing operation of the constructed wetlands system. Several trends in constructed wetlands phosphorus removal are emerging: the primary removal mechanism for phosphorus removal is accretion and new soil sediments, and the use of chemical additives for precipitate and final removal of phosphorus is required for the removal efficiencies required by regulation. The varied applications and results of constructed wetland systems with respect to phosphorus removal are discussed throughout the paper. Floating island technology, using a buoyant material that supports plants, is a newer unique application of constructed wetlands that can be used to remediate wastewater and remove contaminants. Based on the literature search, a series of experiments to further characterize floating islands and improve the removal of phosphorus from wastewater are recommended using this technology.
