Abstract:
The Palaearctic Pollenia haeretica species-group is revised. Two species make up the group: Pollenia haeretica Séguy, 1928 (Algeria, Tunisia, Italy) and Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930 (Morocco). Pollenia rungsi Séguy, 1953 is established as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov. Pollenia funebris Villeneuve, 1933 is treated as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov., but the name is a junior primary homonym of Pollenia funebris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863, and therefore permanently invalid. A lectotype is designated for Pollenia haeretica Séguy to fix the interpretation of the name. The syntypes of Pollenia funebris Villeneuve are probably lost.

Abstract:
AbstractThe archaic cynipoid family Ibaliidae is revised. All described taxa are included in a checklist, and keys to valid taxa are presented. Host records include larvae of several woodwasp species (Siricidae: Siricinae and Tremicinae). Ibaliidae is considered to include the East Asian genus Heteribalia Sakagami, with five valid species, and the mainly Holarctic genus Ibalia Latreille, with 13 valid species, seven in the subgenus Ibalia and six in the subgenus Tremibalia. Heteribalia aureopilosa Maa, 1949 and H. subtilis Maa, 1949 are raised from subspecies to species level. Ibalia (T.) hunanica sp. n., is described from Oriental China. Three morphs of I. (T.) anceps, differing in wing colour pattern, are recognized, and distribution records of these morphs in North America are mapped. I. scalpellator Westwood, 1837 is synonymized with I. anceps Say, 1824; I. takaehihoi Yasumatsu, 1937 with I. jakowlewi Jacobson, 1899; I.fulviceras Yang, 1991 with I. ornata Belizin, 1968; and I. yunshae Yang et Liu,1992 with I. rufipes drewseni Borries, 1891. Lectotypes are designated for I. picea Matsumura, 1912 (syn. of I. leucospoides (Hochenwarth, 1785)) and for I. japonica Matsumura, 1912.

Abstract:
AbstractSiricids and their parasitoids were reared from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L. (Pinaceae)) trees infested by Sirex noctilio F. in central New York State. Sirex noctilio accounted for 94.3% of the siricid specimens emerging, totaling 1313 specimens from six trees, with a maximum of 495 from one tree. Of the individuals emerging per tree, 20.6 ± 5.2% were female. Two native siricids, Sirex nigricornis F. and S. edwardsii Brullè, also emerged from trees but in low numbers. Three hymenopteran parasitoid species that attack siricids emerged, totaling 21.8 ± 6.4% parasitism per tree. Ibalia leucospoides ensiger Norton (Ibaliidae) was by far the most abundant parasitoid, at 20.5 ± 6.3% parasitism per tree. The percentage of female S. noctilio emerging was positively correlated with wood diameter, whereas percent parasitism by I. l. ensiger was negatively correlated with wood diameter.

Abstract:
Woodwasps (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) are saproxylic insects and a common forest pest. Siricid woodwasps are classified into two subfamilies: Siricinae and Tremecinae. All known symbiotic fungi of Siricinae are in the genusAmylostereumBoidin while some species of Tremecinae have been observed to have a relationship with the fungusCerrenaunicolor(Bull.) Murrill. Previous studies about the host searching behavior of woodwasps and their parasitoids have focused primarily on the subfamily Siricinae. We analyzed the role ofC.unicolorvolatiles on the host searching behavior ofTremexapicalisMatsumura (Hymenoptera: Siricidae: Tremecinae) and its parasitoid Ibalia (Tremibalia) japonica Matsumura (Hymenoptera: Ibaliidae). The results of an olfactory response experiment indicated that the females ofT.apicalisand its parasitoid find their respective hosts using volatiles fromC.unicolor. Using DNA barcode, we identified basidiocarps on the trees infested withT.apicalis.The basidiocarps were all white-rot fungi that cause sapwood decay, includingC.unicolor. Two additional species that we identified belonged to genera closely related toC.unicolor.Woodwasp species are known to carry symbiotic fungi in a pair of specialized sacs called mycangia. Notably we found that mycangia-like structures were absent in the abdomens ofT.apicalisfemales. To the best of our knowledge,Xerisspectrum(Linnaeus) (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is the only reported example of woodwasp species that do not contain symbiotic fungi in their bodies. Our results suggested that: (1)T.apicalisfemales search for host wood that is already infected with sapwood decaying fungus using volatile compounds; (2)T.apicalis’ female parasitoid also uses volatile compounds from fungus to locate wood that is infested with its potential host.

Abstract:
AbstractWe collected naturally infested Pinus resinosa Aiton (Pinaceae) and P. sylvestris Linnaeus to investigate phenological patterns and quantify parasitism by a suite of native hymenopteran parasitoids on two woodwasps (Hymenoptera: Siricidae): the invading non-native European woodwasp, Sirex noctilio Fabricius, and a co-colonising native, S. nigricornis Fabricius. We sampled a total of 76 trees from two field sites in 2010 and seven sites in 2011. In raw abundance, S. noctilio outnumbered S. nigricornis by 2:1 in 2010 and by 7.5:1 in 2011. We collected the egg/early instar parasitoid, Ibalia leucospoides ensiger Norton (Hymenoptera: Ibaliidae); four species of Rhyssinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) late larval parasitoids; and Pseudorhyssa nigricornis (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a cleptoparasitoid of rhyssines. Variation in siricid and parasitoid species assemblage and abundance was explained primarily by site, with tree-level factors playing a secondary role. Parasitism was significantly lower in P. sylvestris (13.6%±4.1 SE), a naturalised pine from Europe, than in the native P. resinosa (28.5%±5.0). Total parasitism was 27.6%±5.0 in 2010 and 20.9%±4.7 in 2011. This study represents the most robust analysis of the diverse woodwasp and parasitoid assemblage infesting pines in North America.

Abstract:
The Ibadis are a Muslim religious minority with a long history and a rich philosophical and theological literature. This research claims that the Ibadis adherence to strict and puritan Islamic principles has not only affected their individual and social behavior, but also marked their approach to architecture, and the construction of cities. This article investigates the architecture of mosques developed in the four significant regions where this network of communities has settled since the ninth century: Oman, the M'zab valley in Algeria, Djerba in Tunisia, and Jebel Nafusa in Libya. Many features distinguish the architectural style of these from the typical mosque style. Although it may appear plural in its spatial arrangement, volumes, material and construction methods, the architecture of Ibadi mosques displays an “air de Famille” that relates them to their Arab-Berber origins and Ibadi religious principles. The present research is a comparative analysis of representative samples of this architecture in all the regions inhabited by the Ibadis. The second layer of scrutiny consisted of exploring the origins of its distinctive features in the meanings of the Ibadi Fiqh that concerned the act of building. It is a pioneering investigation of the relationship between the Ibadi religious principles and the architecture of their mosques. This research has established that the Ibadi Fiqh has addressed some aspects of the design of mosques and therefore have impacted, if not produced, some of the distinctive features of this architecture.

Abstract:
AbstractFrom at least the 17th century onward, a sizeable Maghribi Ibadi community lived, studied, and worked in the city of Cairo, centered around a trade agency, school, and library known as the ‘Buffalo Agency’ (Wikālat al-Jāmūs). Over nearly four centuries, this agency served as a hub for Ibadi intellectual activity and manuscript production. Despite its place of prominence in the history of early-modern Ibadi communities, manuscripts are some of the only surviving evidence of its existence. Using manuscript notes from and catalog data on manuscripts either held at the agency’s library or copied there, this article suggests that Ibadis were far from the small, isolated minority community in northern Africa they are often imagined to have been. Instead, the story of the Buffalo Agency points to the ways in which Ibadis very much belonged to the intellectual and commercial worlds of Sunni-dominated Cairo from the 17th–20th centuries.

Abstract This article focuses on letters in private Ibadi libraries and their importance for understanding the primary means of communication among Ibadi communities in the premodern Maghrib. Using the example of a letter from the 7th/13th-century Ibadi Shaykh Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Ṣidghiyānī from the island of Djerba (Tunisia) to the Ibadis of Warjalān (Algeria), it seeks to highlight the importance of the archive of unedited Ibadi manuscript letters. This corpus of correspondences has not received the care and maintenance it merits because these letters do not belong to a recognized volume or book and are today located in private libraries unavailable to the public. The article also uses the example of al-Ṣidghiyānī’s letter to emphasize the importance of the manuscript letters and their role in maintaining intellectual ties among the Ibadi cities of the Maghrib. This brief article consists of two parts. The first part offers a general presentation of the archive where the letter is today held: the El Barounia Library in Djerba, Tunisia. The second part presents the manuscript and its author in their historical context.

Abstract:
When writing about Islamic sectarian diversity, the vast majority of authorspay attention only to Sunni and Shi‘i Islam. Yet there exists a third groupdrawn from the earliest conflicts that rent the Muslim ummah apart: the Ibadis. If they are mentioned at all, it is usually little more than a footnote remarkingthat this group is the remnant of the Khariji secession in 657. Yet this thirdgroup – today predominant in Oman and Zanzibar, with populations also inAlgeria, Libya, and Tunisia – played an important political and theologicalrole in the immediate post-Prophetic period. Due to this word’s negative connotation, however, Ibadis do not refer to themselves as Kharijis, a group historicallyviewed as religious extremists by other Muslims. Instead, “Ibadi”comes from the enigmatic Abdullah ibn Ibad/Abad who died early in theeighth century, although, as the author notes, it is likely that his successor Jabiribn Zayd played a more important role in founding the group.Addressing the dearth of English-language resources on Ibadi beliefs, ValerieJ. Hoffman has written The Essentials of Ibāḍī Islam in “an attempt tointroduce Ibadi Islamic theology to students and scholars of Islam” (p. 4) – atask in which she succeeds admirably. Her book is primarily a translation ofa theological primer and supplementary text, preceded by a short introductionon the origins and history of Ibadi Islam to orient the readers and prepare them ...

Abstract:
The twentieth-century Ibadi imamate of “inner” Oman (1913–1955) constituted one of the world's last theocracies. In a demise unique for the mid-twentieth century, it became assimilated into one of the world's last absolute monarchies. The 1955 shift from theocratic to dynastic rule met initially with the support, or at least the acquiescence, of most of the tribesmen and notables of the interior. This acquiescence at first appears surprising because the fundamentalist Islamic religious and political principles for which the imamate stood continued to be properly supported. One of these principles for Ibadis was that the imām, the spiritual and temporal leader of the Islamic community, should be the most qualified of available candidates and chosen by a consensus of the community's religious men of learning and notables, a notion markedly at contrast with the ascriptive one of dynastic rule. Conflict between these two forms of rule is basic to much of Islamic political history and to that of pre-1970 Oman in particular.

Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera's recent film The Infiltrators uses a bold mix of film forms to tell the true story of a group of young undocumented activists who intentionally detain themselves in a South Florida immigration detention facility. Styled as a heist film, Ibarra and Rivera weave together verité footage, testimony, and reenactment to produce a compelling argument against immigration detention. In Diana Ruiz's interview, Ibarra and Rivera discuss the ways in which The Infiltrators problematizes extractive modes of documentary film and how the project's requisite reenactment brought about unexpected results. They also discuss the creative and political dimensions of “undocumented storytelling,” which relates to the filmmakers' enduring commitment to depicting fully dimensional representations of immigrants and Latinx experiences.

Abstract:
In spite of a long-standing interest in the Ibadi community and its historical, social, religious and architectural legacy, its Ibadi scholarly literature remains largely unknown. The present research continues in the footsteps of the pioneering works of Joseph Schacht (Schacht, 1954) and Pierre Cuperly (Cuperly, 1988) on Ibadism. It aims to cast light on the Ibadi literature that represents an authentic source of information for the study of Ibadism past and present. This article analyzes an Ibadi manuscript from the twelfth century written by the scholar Abul’Abbas Ahmad. This document has been the primary reference for the most important sources of Ibadi legislation still in use by the community in its three main centers: M’zab, Djerba and Oman. The study of this document, along with other Ibadi scholarly literature on this topic, shows that this jurisprudence has regulated in detail the design, construction and management of mosques, and that this level of careful attention was due to the importance of the mosque for the instruction and organization of the community.

Abstract:
Purpose The Ibaloy is an indigenous ethnic group in the Northern Philippines. Due to modernization, changes in lifestyle, livelihood and spiritual inclination many have forgotten about their culture. Income-generating activities such as handicraft businesses and food security are among their needs and aspirations. With the potential that indigenous entrepreneurship has in improving their cultural and economic status, this study aims to identify which crafts in their material culture can be publicly shared as tourism products and to assess the landscape within which indigenous entrepreneurship can be undertaken. Design/methodology/approach The study utilized a qualitative methodology which involved a combination of participant observation and semi-structured interviews. An interview guide which consisted of open-ended questions that focused on themes such as identification of Ibaloy crafts, the crafts’ various categorization and significance, the challenges and opportunities and their perceptions on what they want done for their crafts and material culture in general was developed for this purpose. The primary respondents were the Ibaloys themselves and other key informants from government and other stakeholders. Findings Other than serving their purpose in an Ibaloy household and as objects used for special occasions, Ibaloy crafts have the potential to be developed as tourism products. While many challenges abound, availability of resources and collaborative support by the government and other institutions can bring opportunities that will lead Ibaloy crafts to become prime tourism products. Social implications The findings point to a compelling need for policymakers and concerned authorities to take immediate action to ensure the culture and heritage of the Ibaloys are protected. Originality/value The study adds to the literature about Filipino indigenous peoples, particularly the Ibaloys of Cordillera, and their aspirations for the inclusion of their material culture to the tourism industry. It can serve as a guide in addressing issues and concerns related to indigenous entrepreneurship that may be addressed through policy intervention and support from stakeholders.

Abstract:
Abstract Since becoming a nation-state in 1970, Oman's expanding heritage industry has included the restoration of castles and citadels, including the fort at Nizwa. The fort was once the administrative and juridical center of the Ibadi Imamate (1913–58). As the site of sharia adjudication, it sanctioned a past of primarily moral nature, oriented toward God and salvation and grounded in Ibadi doctrine and practice. This mode of history implied that everyday interactions and relationships could be assessed through exemplary forms of morality, as embodied by virtuous forbears. Yet the heritage project in modern Oman has treated history and Islam as seemingly separate, erasing formal awareness of the sociopolitical and ethical relationships that once characterized Ibadi rule. Today, the historical work done by the fort as a heritage site entails a progress-oriented future, reconfiguring Ibadi Islam in the process.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The genus Hannemania includes 25 species of parasites of amphibians; Chile has one species: H. pattoni Sambon, 1928. This work reviews the genus Hannemania and describes two new species from Chile: Hannemania ortizi sp. nov., a parasite of Pleurodema thaul (Lesson) (Anura: Leptodactylidae) and Eupsophus contulmoensis Ortiz, Ibarra-Vidal, Formas (Anura: Alsodidae) and Hannemania gonzaleacunae sp. nov., a parasite of E. nahuelbutensis Ortiz and Ibarra-Vidal (Anura: Alsodidae). The new species differ from H. pattoni and other nearby species principally by character states of the palp and leg setae. A comparison of the diagnostic characters for all species of Hannemania is included.

Abstract:
Tertiary lymphoid organs (TLOs) are organized aggregates of B and T cells formed in postembryonic life in response to chronic immune responses to infectious agents or self-antigens. Although CD11c+ dendritic cells (DCs) are consistently found in regions of TLO, their contribution to TLO organization has not been studied in detail. We found that CD11chi DCs are essential for the maintenance of inducible bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (iBALT), a form of TLO induced in the lungs after influenza virus infection. Elimination of DCs after the virus had been cleared from the lung resulted in iBALT disintegration and reduction in germinal center (GC) reactions, which led to significantly reduced numbers of class-switched plasma cells in the lung and bone marrow and reduction in protective antiviral serum immunoglobulins. Mechanistically, DCs isolated from the lungs of mice with iBALT no longer presented viral antigens to T cells but were a source of lymphotoxin (LT) β and homeostatic chemokines (CXCL-12 and -13 and CCL-19 and -21) known to contribute to TLO organization. Like depletion of DCs, blockade of LTβ receptor signaling after virus clearance led to disintegration of iBALT and GC reactions. Together, our data reveal a previously unappreciated function of lung DCs in iBALT homeostasis and humoral immunity to influenza virus.

Abstract:
Background: Isolated bulbar amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (IBALS) is a regional variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with weakness restricted to the bulbar muscles for at least 2 years, and slower progression than generalized ALS. Bulbar-onset generalized ALS, by contrast, typically has a more rapid progression than limb-onset ALS.Objective: To characterize patients with IBALS and compare them to patients with isolated bulbar disease at presentation who progress to generalized ALS.Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients seen in our ALS specialty clinic at the University of Kansas Medical Center between 2001-2011. Results: Of 543 patients seen in the ALS clinic, 150 presented with bulbar symptoms at disease onset: 28 (18.7%) had bulbar signs and no evidence of extremity involvement on exam or electrodiagnostic testing at their initial visit; and 14 (9.3%) had weakness restricted to the bulbar muscles after 2 years of follow up (IBALS). IBALS patients were 57.1% male, with a mean age of symptom onset of 60.8 years (range 39-77 years). The mean disease duration was 3.1 years (range of 2-8 years), with 50% mortality at a mean follow up of 3.5 years. Minimal denervation changes were seen in at least one limb in 6 subjects (42.9%). Other clinical features included: 4 subjects (28.6%) had cognitive impairment, 4 (28.6%) had pseudo-bulbar affect, and 5 subjects (35.7%) had impaired eye movements on smooth pursuit. Conclusion: Isolatred bulbar ALS IBALS is an identifiable restricted regional ALS pattern if there is no clinical limb weakness 2 years after symptom onset. It may have a slower progression from typical ALS. The biologic factors that account for the IBALS restricted pattern are unknown.

Abstract:
Descriptions of Indians in northern Mexico with copper artifacts occur in the sixteenth-century expedition reports of Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Ibarra, and Father Rodríguez. The phrasing of Cabeza de Vaca's account indicates that both copper bells and plates were excavated from abandoned villages and then traded widely. Statements given in all three journals point to the site of Paquimé, or Casas Grandes, in Chihuahua as the most probable source. Since Casas Grandes was deserted in the sixteenth century, it is suggested that the copper objects found among the Indians in northern Mexico by Cabeza de Vaca, Ibarra, and Rodríguez were looted from Casas Grandes rather than obtained by trade from west Mexico or Mesoamerica.
