Abstract:
Community radio is still relevant in today's world despite the rapid changes taking place in communication information technology. It is a faster platform for disseminating information apart from other traditional media, mobile phone and the Internet. In Sarawak, Wai FM Iban is popular among the Iban community especially those living in rural areas. This is because it is the fastest way for the local community to obtain information. This study aims to examine how older adult listeners of Wai FM Iban evaluate the language used by the broadcasters and the quality of radio programmes produced by the radio station. As listening to the radio has become a daily activity among Iban community, Wai FM Iban has a vital role to play in disseminating information to the Iban community throughout Sarawak. It plays a role to ensure proper and correct Iban language is used on air. This study employs a qualitative approach where focus group discussion is used for data collection. Findings show that older listeners of Wai FM Iban are concerned about the use of code-mixing and code-switching among broadcasters that would lead to the deterioration of the language. Findings also indicated that older adult listeners are concerned about the quality of language used and programmes produced by the radio station. As the custodian of Iban language, custom and tradition, they believed that the language used by the broadcasters will determine the quality of programmes produced by the radio station. Keywords: Community radio, Iban language, code-switching, code-mixing, customs and traditions.

Abstract:
Iban language is one of the ethnic subjects taught in Sarawak schools. This subject is managed from the primary level up to the higher education level. This subject's curriculum prioritises human capital development as well as good values for students. Proverbs in Iban Language is one of the curriculum areas in Iban Language. Proverbs are defined as figurative or allusive statements of sentences, clauses, or sentences that encompass the power of wisdom, moral elements, and indigenous practices that are arranged metaphorically, have a fixed form, and possess a pure value inherited from generation to generation (KSSM Bahasa Iban, 2015). The effectiveness of teaching and learning is influenced by the teacher's competence, which includes approaches (Daly, Liou & Der-Martirosian, 2021), leadership (Shen et al., 2020) and content pedagogical knowledge (Gess-Newsome et al., 2019). Likewise, especially when teaching proverbs in the Iban language. Through the approach used in imparting knowledge to their students, educators also play an important role in producing an educated nation (Rahmatullah et al., 2022). As a result, educators must constantly improve themselves while also remaining aware of changing educational technology. Keywords: Corona SDK Technology, Teaching and Learning, Iban Language Proverbs

Abstract:
This study investigates the use of the Talmy-Slobin typology of semantic components of motion verbs as applied to Bible translation. Using the Bup Kudus Baru, a new Iban translation, in comparison with a framework formed by the Hebrew original, NRSV representing English translation, and occasionally a Chinese translation, the author demonstrates the key features of verb-framed, satellite-framed, and equipollently-framed languages. The analysis of two Hebrew motion verbs, yāșā’ (path verb) and hālak (manner verb), and their respective Iban translations in Bup Kudus Baru, shows that the Iban language, much like Malay and Urak Lawoi’ from the same language family, is of path-salient nature in principle, but at the same time displays the use of serial verb constructs, a feature of equipollently-framed languages when manner verbs are required. The author concludes with some suggestions of ways to apply the Talmy-Slobin model in Bible translation, from the point of view of translators, translation officers, and their institutions.

Abstract:
The study examined the impact of the national language policy on the language use of three main ethnic groups in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. The data analyzed was based on a sociolinguistic survey on language use in six domains that involved 937 Malay, Chinese and Iban adolescents from three major towns in Sarawak. The results showed that the use of Bahasa Malaysia exceeded English usage for all three ethnic groups, showing the success of compulsory education in the national language. However, the language planning has greater impact on the Iban than on the Chinese who are shifting away from the ethnic languages of the Chinese sub-groups to Mandarin Chinese. The availability of an alternative standard language with international standing which also functions as a symbol of cultural solidarity compromises the impact of the national language policy.

Abstract:
My This paper is a critical evaluation of B. Nothofer's definition of ‘Malayic’ (§1). It also discusses his classification of Iban (or ‘Sea Dayak’) as a separate primary branch in the Malayic language group, and his analysis of some aspects of Iban phonological history (§ 2).The Malayic language group consists of (literary, standard) Malay and all dialects and languages that are sufficiently close to Malay in order to form an exclusive subgroup with it within the Austronesian language family. In 1985 I finished a PhD thesis which is a phonological, lexical and morphological reconstruction of Proto-Malayic, the hypothetical stock-language of the Malayic subgroup. The reconstruction is made on the basis of six members of the Malayic subgroup, viz. Malay, Minangkabau, Banjarese, Middle Malay (Seraway variant) Iban and Jakartanese. In August 1986 the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in Kuala Lumpur organized the International Workshop on the History of Malay, the contributions to which were published in 1988 (Mohd. Thani Ahmad and Zaini Mohamed Zain, 1988). Nothofer's paper treated the various views on the definition of the Malayic subgroup (Nothofer, 1988). Concerning my 1985 study, Nothofer made the following criticisms: definition of ‘Malayic’ is different from that of previous scholars and I do not explain in which way it differs. More particularly, my definition differs from that of Blust (1981), who also includes the Chamic languages of Vietnam and Rejang.

Abstract:
The influence of the classroom environment is a very important element because it can influence students' interest in Iban Language subjects in school, especially interest in Iban literature. Fun activities such as using acting techniques in teaching and learning ensera (Iban folklore), able to hone students' talents from the field of acting and can form a balanced human being in terms of intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Acting technique is a very popular activity because students can learn while entertaining students. This technique can be carried out if the teacher is able and able to provide an acting script or short dialogue in ensera with an interesting storyline and ask students to read and remember the dialogue. This activity can give birth to elements of appreciation including character, language style, values, beauty, cultural elements, and the like. Thus, Iban students can appreciate ensera well and are able to master it. The research method using the field method utilizes three types of research methods namely semi-structured interview method, observation, and video recording. The findings of the study show that the role of ensera appreciation through acting techniques in the context of teaching and learning is fully used in the classroom. The implication is that students can give very thoughtful opinions in terms of knowledge, existing experience, enjoyment, and appreciation, and encourage students' interest in teaching the Iban language with an appreciation of ensera.

El, Khamloussy Ahmed. "Commented translation of an excerpt from Hunayn Ibn Ishaq's epistle to his patron 'Ali ibn Yahya on the translations of Galen." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/10260.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of a commented translation of an excerpt from a ninth century C.E. letter by the celebrated Arabic translator Hunayn Ibn Ishaq. The epistle is addressed to one of his patrons, 'Ali ibn Yahya, and gives an account of the works of the Greek physician Galen as well as their translations. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part One provides a historical background to the translation, and is subdivided into two sections: (1) Hunayn Ibn Ishaq (his life, his achievements); (2) Hunayn's fellow translators and patrons mentioned in the epistle. Part Two comprises the Arabic text (Source Text), about 5,000 words, and its English translation (Target Text). Part Three consists of a theoretical discussion of the problems of translating this letter. In the first section of that part, we explain the purpose and style of our translation. We also analyze some of the main differences between Arabic and English textuality (e.g. cohesion), and discuss translation difficulties of different types, namely interpretive (e.g. polysemy) and terminological (e.g. synonymy). In Section Two, we expound Hunayn's own method of research and views on translation. Finally, we summarize the main conclusions that we draw from the epistle, and from its translation. For the convenience of the reader, a glossary of proper names is provided at the beginning of the thesis. We include as appendices three samples from various translations of the letter. Given the different nature of the three parts of this thesis, the bibliographical references are arranged under three headings, each corresponding to a part. An index of names and subjects appears at the very end.

The  study   analyzes  the  effectiveness  of protected areas in Serbia presently as well as in the  future,  based  on  the  representation  of suitable habitats and centers of diversity for 116 common  species of  birds,  selected on the  basis of  11  criteria.  Nationally  protected  areas, Important  Bird  and  Biodiversity  areas  (IBAs) and  networks formed  by overlapping these two types  of  protected  areas  have  been  evaluated separately. Suitable habitats of the species in the study  were  determined  by  species  distribution modeling  using  the  MaxEnt  approach,  and  the distribution  models  were  projected  to  four different  climate  change  scenarios  in  future (year  2050).  The  IBA  network  proved  to  be significantly more effective for the  protection of habitats  of  studied  species  and  centers  of  their diversity, compared  to the network of nationally protected  areas,  and  a  similar  situation  is projected for the future. Both types of protected areas  on  average  covered  a  relatively  small percentage of suitable habitats for most species (10.4%  in  nationaly  protected  areas,  21.9%  in IBA)  and  meet  conservation  goals  only  for  a  small  number  of  species  (11  for  nationaly protected  areas,  37  for  IBA).  Diversity  centers for  species  in  the  study  are  relatively  poorlyrepresented within all three networks  (9.8% for nationaly  protected  areas  and  25.4%  for  IBA). Protected  areas  did  not  show  significantly higher  effectiveness  for  the  conservation  of priority  species  and  their  diversity.  Nationaly protected  areas  and  the  IBA  network  in  Serbia have  a  significantly  better  coverage  of  habitats and  centers  of  diversity  for  forest  species  and species  of  rocky  habitats,  cliffs  and  gorges, while  suitable  habitats  and  centers  of  diversity for breeding birds of farmlands, settlements and aquatic  habitats  are  very  poorly  represented. Habitats of breeding birds of lowland  armlands are  particularly  poorly  represented  within protected  natural  assets  and  the  IBA  network, and this measure does not meet the conservation goals for this group of birds. Differences in the effectiveness  of  protected  areas  for  breeding birds  of  various  habitat  types  will  generally increase  in  the  future,  due  to  the  anticipated range decrease  for  most forest species that will withdraw  to  the  better  conserved  mountainous areas, whereas range of the majority o f breeding birds  of  farmland  and  aquatic  habitats  will  be expanded  to  unprotected  lowland  areas.  For some  of  the  species,  mostly  birds  of  hill  and mountain  forests and other natural  habitats, the main  conservation  strategy  implies  precise boundaries  extension  of  the  current  protected areas  with  management  directed  towards preserving  natural  habitats  and  reducing  the utilization  of  resources.  On  the  other  hand,  for most  of  the  farmland  and  grassland  species, especially in the lowlands, an effective strategy would  be  to  define  completely  new  and spacious  protected  areas  oriented  towards maintaining a favorable regime for management and  landuse. The  study  demonstrates that there are  great  possibilities  of  using  nonsystematically  collected  data  from  professiona l and  amateur  ornithologists,  for  application  in species  distribution  modeling,  but  also emphasizes  the  need  to  launch  extensive programs for systematic inventory, mapping and monitoring of common bird species.

Abstract:
A word's indeclinability in Arabic is determined by its similarity to the particles, which are considered to possess the defining characteristics of indeclinability. This similarity is found in four categories: similarity in terms of structure; similarity in terms of meaning; similarity by being ungoverned by a regent; and similarity by requiring a complement. A substantive's indefiniteness is determined by its ability either to accept the definite article ا ل in those cases where the latter is able to induce definiteness, or to take the place of that which accepts the definite article in the same cases.

Johnson, Philip Alan 1958. ""The Refutation of the Grammarians" by Ibn Mada' al-Qurtubi: A translation, with syntactic analysis of "Bab al-Ishtighal"." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282645.

Full text
Abstract:
Government and Binding Theory dictates that the case features of noun phrases are assigned structurally under government. On this basis the claim by Ibn Mada'al-Qurtubi, in The Refutation of the Grammarians, that case is assigned solely by the language user on strictly semantic grounds, is rejected; also untenable, however, is the position of traditional Arab grammarians that case can, in some contexts, be assigned by "concealed" governors, as the Projection and Structure-Preserving Principles require that material having semantic content be visible at all levels of representation. Government and Binding principles are adequate to account for case-assignment in the issues raised by Ibn Mada'; they cannot, however, offer a clear solution to the apparent violation of Principle C of the Binding Theory found in some examples of bab al-tanazuᶜ, the category of "contention in government".

Abstract:
This chapter examines the history of the idea that the shapes, names, and sounds of the ṭeʿamim convey information about biblical narratives, including twists and turns in the plot, the thoughts and motivations of the characters, and the way direct speech was delivered. This exegetical technique is examined first by enquiring into its relationship with the midrashic method of deriving such information from the graphic features of the consonantal text of the Hebrew Bible. Turning to the approach of Tobias ben Eliezer, Joseph ibn Caspi, and Baḥya ben Asher, attention is focused on interpretations of unusual and irregular cantillation marks, including the shalshelet, according to the principles of derash. Finally, examples from the commentaries of Moses Alsheikh of Safed are examined to show how sixteenth-century Sephardi interpreters treated the Masoretic system of accentuation more broadly as a source of information concerning biblical narratives.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter One, ‘Twentieth-Century Debates on the Translatability of the Qur’an in the Middle East’, covers not only the period of the first debates over the translatability of the Qur’an in the Muslim world (primarily Egypt, Syria, and Iraq) during the early- and mid-twentieth century but also the local development of the ‘translation movement’ in the Saudi context. It discusses the significance to these debates of a corpus of religious texts by authors ranging from the twelfth-century thinker Ibn Taymiyya to later scholars from the eighteenth-century family of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb and how these came to form a kind of exegetical canon, both in essential terms (that is, what exactly should be interpreted) and textually (which sources are ‘suitable’ to do that with). This hermeneutics also incorporates the problem of translation [tarjama] and the limits of interpretation, for example, ideas about which meanings can be explained in Arabic and explicitly transferred to other languages. The chapter also briefly addresses foreign language learning in Saudi Arabia and modern developments in higher education there.

Abstract:
Ibn al-Sikkīt (d. 244 AH / 858 AD) considers Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb one of the imams and scholars of the Arabic language in the third AH/ ninth century AD, and he was the Kūfī school of thought, and he is one of those involved in controlling the rules of the language and the standards of its correct words, and he has great contributions in confronting the phenomenon of linguistic melody in his age One of his most important printed books that we have received and that deals with the Arabic language is the book Iṣlāḥ alManṭiq, which left an impact on many linguists after him. The book printed with investigation: Aḥmad Muḥammad Shākir and ʿAbd al-Salam Hāron. The research acquires its importance by revealing what distinguished Ibn al-Sikkīt in his linguistic efforts through his material in the book Iṣlāḥ al-Manṭiq It also contributes to understanding the prevailing linguistic situation in his time. In his dictionary, that is in controlling the linguistic morphology and Language error. The research monitors the issue of ancient Arab grammarians dealing with manifestations of linguistic weakness and Language error in the era of Ibn al-Sikkīt through his contributions in that, and divides the research into an introduction that reviews Ibn al- Sikkīt translation and definition of his linguistic books, then the research presents a set of issues that Ibn al- Sikkīt dealt with in his book Reform of Logic, all the way to the rules that he adopted in it, then the research concludes with a brief conclusion that presents its most prominent conclusions
