Abstract:
My Iban application is an interactive mobile application for learning the Iban language. The aim of this study is to develop a mobile application that is focusing on creating alternative tools in learning Iban language where it will ease the students to learn. This application development is based on the problem that occurred when there is no suitable application in learning Iban language among the students in primary school. The methodology that has been chosen in developing the application is the Evolutionary Prototyping model. Quantitative technique is used to test and evaluate My Iban applications. Based on the findings obtained from the users through a survey, it finds out that My Iban application have gained positive feedback. The functionality and the usability of My Iban application has been tested and approved by the user. For future works, the use of interactive multimedia elements in developing mobile applications need to be improved. In conclusion, the application hopefully can encourage the students to learn the Iban language better via mobile application.

Abstract:
Community radio is still relevant in today's world despite the rapid changes taking place in communication information technology. It is a faster platform for disseminating information apart from other traditional media, mobile phone and the Internet. In Sarawak, Wai FM Iban is popular among the Iban community especially those living in rural areas. This is because it is the fastest way for the local community to obtain information. This study aims to examine how older adult listeners of Wai FM Iban evaluate the language used by the broadcasters and the quality of radio programmes produced by the radio station. As listening to the radio has become a daily activity among Iban community, Wai FM Iban has a vital role to play in disseminating information to the Iban community throughout Sarawak. It plays a role to ensure proper and correct Iban language is used on air. This study employs a qualitative approach where focus group discussion is used for data collection. Findings show that older listeners of Wai FM Iban are concerned about the use of code-mixing and code-switching among broadcasters that would lead to the deterioration of the language. Findings also indicated that older adult listeners are concerned about the quality of language used and programmes produced by the radio station. As the custodian of Iban language, custom and tradition, they believed that the language used by the broadcasters will determine the quality of programmes produced by the radio station. Abstract:
Iban language is one of the ethnic subjects taught in Sarawak schools. This subject is managed from the primary level up to the higher education level. This subject's curriculum prioritises human capital development as well as good values for students. Proverbs in Iban Language is one of the curriculum areas in Iban Language. Proverbs are defined as figurative or allusive statements of sentences, clauses, or sentences that encompass the power of wisdom, moral elements, and indigenous practices that are arranged metaphorically, have a fixed form, and possess a pure value inherited from generation to generation (KSSM Bahasa Iban, 2015). The effectiveness of teaching and learning is influenced by the teacher's competence, which includes approaches (Daly, Liou & Der-Martirosian, 2021), leadership (Shen et al., 2020) and content pedagogical knowledge (Gess-Newsome et al., 2019). Likewise, especially when teaching proverbs in the Iban language. Through the approach used in imparting knowledge to their students, educators also play an important role in producing an educated nation (Rahmatullah et al., 2022). Abstract:
This study investigates the use of the Talmy-Slobin typology of semantic components of motion verbs as applied to Bible translation. Using the Bup Kudus Baru, a new Iban translation, in comparison with a framework formed by the Hebrew original, NRSV representing English translation, and occasionally a Chinese translation, the author demonstrates the key features of verb-framed, satellite-framed, and equipollently-framed languages. The analysis of two Hebrew motion verbs, yāșā’ (path verb) and hālak (manner verb), and their respective Iban translations in Bup Kudus Baru, shows that the Iban language, much like Malay and Urak Lawoi’ from the same language family, is of path-salient nature in principle, but at the same time displays the use of serial verb constructs, a feature of equipollently-framed languages when manner verbs are required. The author concludes with some suggestions of ways to apply the Talmy-Slobin model in Bible translation, from the point of view of translators, translation officers, and their institutions.

Abstract:
The study examined the impact of the national language policy on the language use of three main ethnic groups in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. The data analyzed was based on a sociolinguistic survey on language use in six domains that involved 937 Malay, Chinese and Iban adolescents from three major towns in Sarawak. The results showed that the use of Bahasa Malaysia exceeded English usage for all three ethnic groups, showing the success of compulsory education in the national language. However, the language planning has greater impact on the Iban than on the Chinese who are shifting away from the ethnic languages of the Chinese sub-groups to Mandarin Chinese. The availability of an alternative standard language with international standing which also functions as a symbol of cultural solidarity compromises the impact of the national language policy.

My This paper is a critical evaluation of B. Nothofer's definition of ‘Malayic’ (§1). It also discusses his classification of Iban (or ‘Sea Dayak’) as a separate primary branch in the Malayic language group, and his analysis of some aspects of Iban phonological history (§ 2).The Malayic language group consists of (literary, standard) Malay and all dialects and languages that are sufficiently close to Malay in order to form an exclusive subgroup with it within the Austronesian language family. In 1985 I finished a PhD thesis which is a phonological, lexical and morphological reconstruction of Proto-Malayic, the hypothetical stock-language of the Malayic subgroup. The reconstruction is made on the basis of six members of the Malayic subgroup, viz. Malay, Minangkabau, Banjarese, Middle Malay (Seraway variant) Iban and Jakartanese. In August 1986 the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in Kuala Lumpur organized the International Workshop on the History of Malay, the contributions to which were published in 1988 (Mohd. Thani Ahmad and Zaini Mohamed Zain, 1988). Nothofer's paper treated the various views on the definition of the Malayic subgroup (Nothofer, 1988). Concerning my 1985 study, Nothofer made the following criticisms: definition of ‘Malayic’ is different from that of previous scholars and I do not explain in which way it differs. More particularly, my definition differs from that of Blust (1981), who also includes the Chamic languages of Vietnam and Rejang.

The influence of the classroom environment is a very important element because it can influence students' interest in Iban Language subjects in school, especially interest in Iban literature. Fun activities such as using acting techniques in teaching and learning ensera (Iban folklore), able to hone students' talents from the field of acting and can form a balanced human being in terms of intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Acting technique is a very popular activity because students can learn while entertaining students. This technique can be carried out if the teacher is able and able to provide an acting script or short dialogue in ensera with an interesting storyline and ask students to read and remember the dialogue. This activity can give birth to elements of appreciation including character, language style, values, beauty, cultural elements, and the like. Thus, Iban students can appreciate ensera well and are able to master it. The research method using the field method utilizes three types of research methods namely semi-structured interview method, observation, and video recording. The findings of the study show that the role of ensera appreciation through acting techniques in the context of teaching and learning is fully used in the classroom. The implication is that students can give very thoughtful opinions in terms of knowledge, existing experience, enjoyment, and appreciation, and encourage students' interest in teaching the Iban language with an appreciation of ensera.

This paper examines how modernity has historically shaped developments in the industry of Iban popular music. The Iban make up one third of the Sarawakian population and are the largest indigenous ethnic group in Sarawak, Malaysia. As with other ethnicities in the nationstate, modernity has presented challenges for socio-cultural development and lifestyle of Iban people. Historically, the Iban are a cultural group located geographically and politically on the periphery of the multi-cultural nation of Malaysia. Throughout much of the 20th century, the music industry has experienced a rapid embrace of modernity through the nation to the detriment of traditional practices in culture in order to adapt themselves in the era of modernization. Iban society had gone through a state of flux where people have gone through the process of readapting themselves in meeting the demanding challenges of Malaysian nationalism. Drawing upon Barendregt’s (2014) ‘alternative conceptions of modernity’ this paper examines how the Iban reference both a national as well as a local music industry particularly through their use of language as an expression of Iban. First the paper will examine changes in Iban society through political and economic modernization. Then I look at differential transformation within Iban music industry because of relative exposure to agents of change such as the influence through Christian missionary and education. This reflects how the Iban react and reflect in adaptation of modern demands of change as a result of the effects of historical processes on the social, cultural and physical environments.

Abstract: Images of reptile animals are often debated in various fields such as science, education and their use in proverbs of Malay idioms and Iban idioms. Observation of the characteristics of animals in these classes makes the Iban community more sensitive toward their surroundings. In the Iban idioms, the images of reptiles used are due to the inherent properties of the animals that are equated or reflected in the nature and actions of men in the past. A total of 15 Iban idioms using images of reptiles were generated from Bup Sempama Iban, a book written by Casper Kayong Umping (2011).. The proverbs data were analyzed using the Semantic Inquisitive Approach by applying the Bridging Cross Reference toward the corpus data. Based on the analysis, the proverbs using the images of reptiles show the traits possessed by humans and they are conveyed by the use of proverbs (Sempama Jaku Iban) with implied meanings and subtle language to keep the recipient's heart or listeners. The merging of data, the applied theory, and the culture applied in this study has successfully explained the implicit meaning behind the Iban idioms and the reflection of the minds of the speakers. Pengamatan terhadap sifat-sifat haiwan tersebut menjadikan masyarakat Iban lebih peka terhadap persekitaran mereka. Dalam peribahasa Iban, imej reptilia digunakan adalah disebabkan oleh sifat yang ada pada haiwan tersebut yang disamakan atau direfleksikan kepada sifat dan tindakan manusia pada masa lalu. Sebanyak 15 data peribahasa Iban menggunakan imej reptilia dijana dari buku Bup Sempama Iban yang ditulis oleh Casper Kayong Umping. Data peribahasa dianalisis dengan menggunakan Pendekatan Semantik Inkuisitif dengan mengaplikasikan Rangka Rujuk Silang terhadap data korpus. Berdasarkan analisis yang dilakukan, peribahasa yang menggunakan imej reptilia menunjukkan sifat-sifat yang dimiliki oleh manusia dan ia disampaikan dengan menggunakan peribahasa (sempama jaku Iban) yang mempunyai makna yang tersirat dan bahasa yang halus dengan tujuan menjaga hati penerima atau pendengar. Among communities reliant on subsistence agriculture as a means of production, transition to wage work may seem indicative of economic progress. In the 21st century, the Iban in East Malaysia utilise three production modes: subsistence rice farming; commerce; and, waged work, to support food requirements and satisfy consumer needs. Waged work is increasingly important, even replacing subsistence and commerce. This study considers perceptions of maintenance and change among the Iban in the Sri Aman Division of Sarawak. The purpose is to gain perspectives of heads of households about “maintenance” and “change”. Research was conducted qualitatively, via observation and interviews. Maintenance is reflected through ongoing use of the Iban language; the longhouse is seen as being of continuing importance for resident and non-resident relatives, even if no longer bound to ancestral longhouse territory. Changes include new technologies, the importance of money, reduced adherence to Iban traditions, and conversion to Catholicism, among the community studied here. Salience of these matters lies in Iban understanding of ways in which modernisation is occurring in their community, in a region known for its biological, cultural and linguistic diversity, providing a voice for community members, and their insights about the contemporary Iban world.

Abstract:
“Leka pelian” is a traditional poem of the Iban community in the invocation category, which is used in traditional Iban healing rituals. Every word sung by the “manang” in “leka pelian” is decorated with figurative language and metaphors to add more beauty to the art of poetry. However, the lack of experts in “leka pelian” makes it difficult for the younger generation, especially the Iban community, to understand the figurative language and metaphors used in “leka pelian” by the “manang”. This has led to the younger generation showing less interest in delving into oral traditions such as “leka pelian”. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the meaning of the metaphors that shapes the “leka pelian” based on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980). This study is qualitative and uses the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) to analyse the categories of metaphors found in “leka pelian”. Content analysis method is used to analyse each category of metaphor found in “leka pelian”. The findings show that the figurative language in “leka pelian” consists of abstract metaphors to reality, simile metaphors, animal metaphors, nature metaphors, as well as adapted and cultural comparison metaphors in their lives. The investigation shows that nature metaphors are more dominant than other metaphors because they are influenced by the surrounding nature, making nature a metaphor in communication. This category of metaphor is also used as a medium of communication between human world and the supernatural world. The implication of this research shows that the use of different categories of metaphor in “leka pelian” can increase the knowledge of traditional healers and the Iban community, especially in terms of language skills.

Abstract:
Online Social Network (OSN) is frequently used to carry out cyber-criminal actions such as cyberbullying. As a developing country in Asia that keeps abreast of ICT advancement, Malaysia is no exception when it comes to cyberbullying. Author Identification (AI) task plays a vital role in social media forensic investigation (SMF) to unveil the genuine identity of the offender by analysing the text written in OSN by the candidate culprits. Several challenges in AI dealing with OSN text, including limited text length and informal language full of internet jargon and grammatical errors that further impact AI's performance in SMF. The traditional AI system that analyses long text documents seems inadequate to analyse short OSN text's writing style. N-gram features are proven to efficiently represent the authors' writing style for shot text. However, representing N-grams in traditional representation like Tf-IDF resulted in sparse and difficult in grasping the semantic information from text. Besides, most AI works have been done in English but receive less attention in indigenous languages. In West Malaysia, the supreme languages that transcend ethnic boundaries are Iban of Sarawak and KadazanDusun of Sabah, which both are inherently under-resourced. This paper presented a proposed workflow of AI for short OSN text using two Under-Resourced Language (U-RL), Iban and KadazanDusun tweets, to curb the cyberbullying issue in Malaysia. This paper compares Tf-Idf (sparse) and SoA embedding-based (dense) feature representations to observe which representations best represent the stylistic features of the authors’ writing. N-grams of word, character, and POS were extracted as the features. The representation models were learned by different classifiers using machine learning (Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, and SVM). The convolutional neural network (CNN), a SoA deep learning model in sentence classification, was tested against the traditional classifiers. The result was observed by combining different representation models and classifiers on three datasets (English, Iban, and KadazanDusun). The best result was achieved when CNN learned embedding-based models with a combination of all features. KadazanDusun achieved the highest accuracy with 95.76%, English with 95.02%, and Iban with 94%..

Abstract The study investigated the use of Mandarin and Chinese dialects, and attitudes towards these languages among the Foochow living in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia. The study involved 408 Foochow respondents (204 children, 204 parents). As most of the respondents’ close friends, neighbours and colleagues were Foochow, and Chinese in general, Foochow and Mandarin were the two main languages used, but English, Malay and Iban were sometimes used with people from other ethnic groups. More parents felt at ease speaking Foochow in all situations but more children felt that it is nothing special to speak their dialect. The most cherished and emotionally expressive language for the parents was Foochow but for their children, it was Mandarin. More parents were aware of cultural associations and activities than their children. They believed that the use of Chinese dialects will decrease in future and intergenerational transmission of the dialect is important. Yet they were still looking to cultural associations and the government to promote their culture and dialect. The study indicated that the markers for membership of their Chinese dialect group are ancestry, language, living among people from the same dialect group, cultural practices and religion.

Este artículo presenta los resultados de investigación sobre la intervención educativa los juegos libres, estrategia para mejorar los aprendizajes de lenguaje; en el que se indagó la percepción de los estudiantes frente a la evaluación, se diseñaron e implementaron estrategias de evaluación y se analizó el impacto de la evaluación mediada por juegos libres en básica secundaria en una institución pública de bachillerato del municipio de Pacho Cundinamarca, Colombia. Desde el paradigma cualitativo y con metodología de investigación acción participativa, en el que inicialmente se exploró la experiencia de la evaluación en la institución, se propuso un modelo evaluativo a partir de juegos libres, donde los estudiantes fueron participantes en el diseño de las evaluaciones, para, finalmente, valorar dicho proceso. La propuesta que planteaba la trascendencia del uso de juegos libres buscaba que desde el primer momento en que se iniciara la clase, el juego estuviera presente y los criterios de evaluación definidos, los cuales se iban concretando a través del desarrollo temático, del taller de refuerzo, y de la preparación y aplicación de la evaluación. Los datos se recolectaron a partir de los resultados académicos de los años 2017 y 2018, entrevista semiestructurada, lista de chequeo y observación participante. Se pudo definir que los juegos libres se convirtieron en una estrategia efectiva para mejorar los aprendizajes, hecho que resultó trascendental para la apropiación de los conocimientos de manera divertida, activa y pertinente.

En la tradición moderna, el polo hegemónico establece un patrón normal, dicta un modo jerárquico. Como parte de este grupo privilegiado, el texto supuestamente “original” y su autor reciben un valor positivo, mientras que la traducción, el otro diferente, permanece en su cualidad de transparente. Las reflexiones posmodernas sobre las representaciones del otro en el texto traducido influenciaron movimientos que iban en contra de esta forma de imposición de patrones. En este trabajo, destacamos las obras de Derrida (1971, 1973 y 1978) en la ausencia de un significado trascendental; la discusión de Berman (2012) acerca de la relación entre identidad y traducción y la propuesta traductiva queer de Von Flotow (2013), con su poder performativo puede actuar en nombre del movimiento feminista. Al relacionar y contrastar puntos de vista, este artículo considera la diferencia como un aspecto inherente de la traducción. Adicionalmente habla del poder ideológico que ejerce la actividad traductiva en la construcción de identidades y la consolidación de diferencias en la reflexión posmoderna. Además, el artículo analiza la propuesta de la doble traducción al portugués hecha por Maurício Mendonça Cardozo de la novela alemana Der Shimmelreiter (1888) de Theodor Storm, y la forma en la que ésta dialoga con el tema de la identidad de la traducción y su relación con la diferencia.

<p>La autora defiende la interpretación lingüística tradicional (Menéndez Pidal) de que los documentos notariales del Reino de León están escritos en latín. Asimismo está de acuerdo con Wright en que no es necesario postular la existencia de un «latín vulgar leonés», pero a diferencia de éste, considera que el lenguaje notarial es un registro especial cuyas pretensiones iban más allá de reflejar el romance cotidiano. En apoyo de su hipótesis analiza la producción escrita de una serie de notarios de los siglos IX al XII.</p><p>The writer defends the Menéndez Pidal's traditional linguistic interpretation on the language of the legal documents of the Kingdom of León as written in Latin. Moreover the writer agrees to Wright's the ory that it is not necessary to postulate the existence of a «leonese vulgar Latin», but differs from him in the sense that she considers that the notarial language was a special form whose purposes trascended the mere transcription of the colloquial Romance. To support her hypothesis she analyzes some legal documents from the IX to the XII centuries.</p>

Upon these layers of many truths, hope still kindles and from this flickering light, new life emerges. It seems that the world that is rebuilt from this pandemic still has room for myths and folklore. Perhaps we live by creating new legends from the true tales that help us to survive though surrounded by the invisible alien that threatens to invade our bodies, damaging and sometimes killing its hosts, trying to find a way to live in this new century. We are living in a dystopian nightmare, but we survive on the hope that there is life still, beyond.

The challenges that the English as a Second Language (ESL) learners encounter during the reading process impede their reading comprehension. During the reading process, they need to pick up the information and stimulation around the text to comprehend it. Learners with a low vocabulary repertoire usually face difficulties to understand the lengthy text. Therefore, in this study, a mobile application labelled ‘Balloon Vocabulary’ was developed to help Ibanese tertiary learners to enjoy their reading and develop their vocabulary repertoire. This study employed a mixed-method approach that aimed to seek the perceptions of 125 tertiary level Iban learners on the usage of ‘Balloon Vocabulary’ towards improving their vocabulary repertoire. This study was also embarked to discover the learners’ performance after they completed both pre-test and post-test by using the application. Descriptive and inferential analyses were used to analyze the data. The qualitative data were analyzed and transcribed into themes. From the findings, the process of experiencing gamification and language games has led the learners to discover their skill related to vocabulary. Furthermore, their passion for learning was increased due to the involvement of technology in learning. This application is hoped to serve as a potential platform for learners to gain new experience dealing with new technological ways of learning English. Then, it will tread a new path for teachers as they will be able to attract learners’ attention and realign their focus to achieve desired content in learning.

LKM ELektronik dan memiliki muatan budaya lokal dengan penyajian menggunakan Bahasa internasional, yaitu Bahasa inggris menjadi inovasi baru pada pendidikan matematika. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan agar menghasilkan LKM Elektronik bermuatan Etnomatematika pada pakaian adat Dayak iban dan Bahasa Inggris yang layak digunakan. Metode dalam penelitian ini yang digunakan merupakan model penelitian pengembangan dari Borg and Gall. Teknik pengumpul data menggunakan teknik komunikasi tak langsung yaitu lembar validasi dan angket, dan teknik pengukuran, yaitu tes. Hasil penelitian LKM elektronik bermuatan etnomatematika dan bahasa inggris mencapai skor 83, 61% pada penilaian sebagai media dan 82,47% pada penilaian materi sehingga kriteria dinyatakan sangat valid; LKM elektronik bermuatan etnomatematika dan bahasa inggris mencapai persentase 83% kriteria sangat praktis; LKM elektronik bermuatan etnomatematika mencapai 75% mahasiswa yang memiliki nilai minimal baik, sehingga terkategori efektif.The use of LKM tends to have started during this pandemic, it's just that there needs to be innovation from LKM that will be used in learning. Abstract I will analyze in this paper the possibility for a common origin of a word that appears in Romanian as abur “vapor, steam”, in Albanian as avull (id.), and in Basque with two forms, as ibar “valley, watered meadow” and ibai “river”. Romanian abur and Albanian avull are words of the substratum vocabulary of these languages, with a common origin, the Romanian form being more primitive. If a connection between the Basque ibar / ibai and the PIE root of the previous Albanian and Romanian words could be established, then the three words would have had a common origin.

This study examined the perceptions of the participants on the In4dIndigenous CIY nature journaling, their challenges in writing and how the journaling has influenced their creative writing in English Language learning. The methodology adopted for this study was an exploratory study. The instrument employed were document analysis of the In4d-Indigenous CIY Nature Journaling and focus group interview. The participants for this study were 29 Indigenous undergraduates (N=6 male,23= female) pursuing the Bachelor of Education in Iban Studies. The data from nature journaling amplified that the participants expressed their ideas in writing with elements of creative skills, critical thinking skills and emergence of character in articulating ideas for the journal. The data of focus group interview revealed that the In4D-Indigenous CIY nature journaling was a driver that connected technology-aided meaningful outdoor learning with nature, and how the environment was an inspirational teacher. On a positive note, the challenges were expressed as opportunity for improvement rather than threats. The In4d-Indigenous nature journaling indicated an encouraging and constructive influence pertaining to creative writing with six emerging themes: learner autonomy, shift attitude towards language learning, risk-taking, constructors of knowledge, technology exploration and creative-aesthetic value. This study has navigated direction for adopting an Inspired by Nature for the Indigenous CIY nature journaling, yet aspects of new pedagogies for deep learning and 21st Century Skills could be interwoven with nature for a more transformative eco-literacy research.

Abstract This article borrows Juno Salazar Parreñas's concept of the “semi-wild” as an entry point into an analysis of Malaysian Chinese author Zhang Guixing's novels Elephant Herd (1998) and Monkey Cup (2000). Set in Sarawak, both works feature a relatively simple plotline interwoven with an intricate web of flashbacks. More specifically, each work's primary plotline features an ethnically Chinese protagonist searching for a relative who has disappeared into the rainforest, while also becoming romantically interested in a young Indigenous woman whom he meets during his quest. In each case, a fascination with the relationship between humans and Sarawak's various “semi-wild” flora and fauna is paralleled by an attention to the relationship between the region's ethnic Chinese and its various Indigenous peoples—and particularly two subgroups of Sarawak's Dayak ethnicity, the “Sea Dayaks” (also known as the Iban) and the “Land Dayaks” (who are often simply called “Dayaks”). Each work uses a set of quasi-anthropomorphized plants and animals (including silk-cotton trees, Nepenthes pitcher plants, elephants, crocodiles, rhinoceroses, and orangutans) to reflect on humans' relationship to the local ecosystem, while simultaneously using Indigenous peoples to reflect on the way in which overlapping colonial legacies have shaped the region's sociopolitical structures.

Las cantigas gallego-portuguesas son un testimonio fundamental para el conocimiento de los tejidos medievales que se utilizaban en la vestimenta del hombre y la mujer en el siglo XIII y primera mitad del XIV. Aquí se traza un recorrido por los textos donde aparecen mencionados, atendiendo al valor simbólico y referencial que les otorgan los trovadores. Se tiene en cuenta asimismo el valor documental e histórico que ofrecen estas piezas líricas en cuanto a la antigüedad de los tejidos mencionados y a las prendas que se confeccionaban con ellos, y se ofrecen nuevas lecturas de ciertos términos que podrían aludir a tejidos poco documentados en todo el periodo medieval peninsular y que parecen estar mal copiados en los manuscritos. Asimismo, se ofrece un estudio pormenorizado de la cantiga «En este son de negrada», que forma parte del extenso ciclo que dedicó el trovador Lopo Lias a escarnecer a unos caballeros de Lemos con el pretexto de que siempre iban mal vestidos. Es la pieza más singular del ciclo, tanto por su forma estrófica como por su construcción retórica, pero sobre todo presenta un término que no ha podido ser documentado hasta la fecha y que estaría relacionado con un tipo de tejido: «soçeri». Atendiendo al contexto en que se cita, se infiere que podríamos estar ante una mala lectura de los códices, tras la cual se esconde un tejido de origen persa, que aparece documentado en la época con infinidad de variantes léxicas, y que ha sido recogido por Gual Camarena y Corriente bajo la forma «Doxtoni».

Resumo Este artigo traz à tona o empreendimento jesuítico no Brasil do século XVI, cujas estratégias colonizadoras iam muito além da religião, da política, da cultura, atingindo propriamente as diversas línguas nativas. A revolução linguística que os portugueses implantaram em terras brasileiras modificou o quadro social vigente, visto que as línguas indígenas, ao passo que eram aprendidas pelos padres jesuítas, entravam em processo de redução, a fim de serem catalogadas em uma gramática geral. Esta pesquisa mostra como a língua portuguesa, desde a chegada dos jesuítas, transforma-se, paulatinamente, em uma língua de herança, através dos letramentos de pequenos curumins, que com o tempo passavam a usar mais o português que sua língua materna. O documento denominado Ratio Studiorum pautará as ações de letramento jesuíticas, deixando claro que, apesar de todas as obras produzidas em língua nativa pelos padres, especialmente José de Anchieta, o plano jesuítico sempre fora legar as manifestações nativas ao esquecimento, impondo o português como língua oficial no Brasil.Palavras-chave: Jesuítas. This research shows how Portuguese language, since the arrival of Jesuits, becomes, gradually, in heritage language, through literacy of native children, who over time they used more Portuguese than their first language. The document named Ratio Studiorum will guide the Jesuit actions of literacy, making clear, despite of all the works produced by Fathers in native language, specially José de Anchieta, the main Jesuit plan was bequeath to oblivion native manifestations, imposing the Portuguese as the official language in Brazil.Keywords: Jesuits. Ethnography is a qualitative technique researchers use to study people in their own environment through participant observation and face-to-face interviewing. It involves witnessing and/or interacting with the participants in their natural settings, in their cultural context, and then creating a narrative description of that culture against a theoretical background. Ethnography is applied in various social sciences. It is challenging and has many difficulties since it is time-consuming and requires highly qualified researchers due to the critical nature of involving diverse people to gain trust. Although the study among minorities in Malaysia is still at the elementary stage, ethnography is gaining pace. This qualitative study aims to 1) analyse the unexpected challenges faced by the researchers during the ethnography research among minority ethnicities in the Malaysian context and 2) to record methods to be applied. The study used purposive sampling to study three minority ethnicities in Malaysia; the Baba and Nyonya, the Chetties and the Iban communities. This research highlighted the ethnographer’s unexpected challenges in gaining trust to gather experience throughout the ethnography study. Conducting ethnographic research can be subject to unexpected circumstances such as the movement control order during the pandemic, the lack of trust between the researcher and the participants, and the language barrier. Several processes are involved to establish the confidence and to gain the trust of the participants. This study reveals the unexpected challenges of conducting an ethnography study among minority ethnicities in Malaysia and the methods such as digital, field and photos to overcome them.
