Abstract:
Two Latin sources from the years around 1300 (John of Sicily’s commentary on the canons to the Toledan tables and a parchment slip documenting the astronomical activities and observations of Alard of Diest) contain brief references suggesting that Parisian scholars of this period had access to a set of astronomical tables for Tunis known as tabulae Benesac. According to the argument developed in this article, the tables in question probably corresponded to a Maghribī zīj originally created by Ibn Isḥāq al-Tūnisī in c.1222. Current scholarship views the Qur'anic exegesis of Ibn Kathīr as the product of the great Ibn Taymiyya. This paper argues that Ibn Kathīr had a distinct Qur'anic hermeneutic and exegesis to that of Ibn Taymiyya. While Ibn Taymiyya's engagements with the Qur'an were tied to theological refutations, Ibn Kathīr's exegesis is primarily a ḥadīth evaluation (takhrīj) which assessed the tradition-based exegesis that pre-dated him. Ibn Kathīr carefully sorts through the exegeses of al-Ṭabarī and Ibn Abī Ḥātim al-Rāzī to find authentic traditions that fit with his moral and ethical values. His exegesis

It relies on collecting as many phoentic terms as possible and classify them in bundles according to shared links of each bundle. In Abrahamic tradition, the question of God’s relationship with body, space and direction is an inescapable philosophical and theological issue and Islam is not an exception. The Central text of Islam, Quran, contains verses that anthropomorphically attributes “hands”, “eyes”, “face” “establishment upon throne” referencing God. These verses have for centuries sparked among the Muslim philosophers and theologians, centuries of debate; leading to diverse interpretations and theological schools of thought. The history of sub-Saharan Africa is one which is not well known before the coming of the European age of exploration. This is primarily due to a lack of written sources, as many African societies preserved their histories as oral stories and traditions, rather than through writing. While this would have the benefit of kings being able to control information (via their court historians), it has left us with a lack of reliable source material. The oral stories can be used, but only with extreme caution (think of them as a generations-long telephone game, and one can understand how oral tales ca

Why then, is C2221 (#20) before C222 (#21), and why is Iba2 (#45) before Ima2 (#46)? Space group P31 (#144) is before P32 (#145) but P4332 (#212) is before P4132 (#213).
