Abstract:
Abstract Classroom is an integral part of learning activities in educational buildings. Learning in the classroom can be effective and focused if it has a good acoustic design. Unfortunately, most educational buildings are spread out in urban areas, which have a high noise level. This research aims to find the best acoustic design for educational buildings in urban areas. By using Noise Tools, IBANA Calc and Ecotect as simulation method, the research discusses the handling of acoustic design for educational buildings in urban areas through 3 (three) things. (1) Providing a barrier with a height of 2.5 m can reduce noise in the outdoor area of the building from 47.5 to 60.9 dB; (2) The use of block concreates materials, glass laminated and metal panels on the facade of the building, reducing noise to a level of 27dB; (3) The use of framed plaster board and suspended ceiling materials, providing an acoustic response with an estimated decay at all frequencies under 3 seconds.

Abstract:
The Sea Dayaks, better known as the Ibans, inhabit nearly the whole of Sarawak. The Ibans belong to the Proto-Malay groups and historically, they were from the Kapuas Valley in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They migrated to Sarawak about fifteen generations ago in the mid 16th century (the 1630s). They went to the state through the Kumpang Valley and inhabit Batang Ai and then split to several places in Sarawak (Morgan, 1968). Although the Ibans have a social status in their traditional belief, they do not have a hierarchy of social status such as the Orang Ulu. However, they have elevated the status so-called Pengulu, Tuai Rumah, Tuai Burung, Lemambang, Manang, Beliau, Tukang Sabak, dan Indu Takar. The era of modernization has led to changes to the knowledge of the young generation, especially the younger generation of the Ibans who lack knowledge about the function and role of each rank status in their communities. Therefore, this study was conducted qualitatively through an interview with expert informants, observation, and documentation. This research was hoped to contribute to the general knowledge of the Iban community and other communities in the preservation of the function and role of each social status in the Iban community.

Abstract:
Abstract An auditorium, a fairly large room, can do many things, especially in higher education. It can help both academic and non-academic activities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the noise level that can affect the hearing comfort of people using the auditorium room in the campus area. The main purpose of this study is to determine the quality of sound that is considered comfortable in the Auditorium Room from the influence of noise generated by motorized vehicles and tools that are in the process of construction around Building A of the Faculty of Economics and Business Education. The prominent noise comes from passing vehicles and the sound of carpentry tools that are building or repairing buildings around it. To determine the sound quality in the auditorium, this research uses a case study with quantitative descriptive analysis. To collect data, this study used the Decibel X Sound Meter application. The noise level around the Auditorium outbuildings was analyzed with NoiseTools and IBANA-Calc. Based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment Number KEP-48/MENLH/11/1996 on environmental noise. The simulation results of Noise Quality at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics and Business Education showed results at -8 dB which means very good and comfortable.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, the proliferation of co-working spaces has offered a collaborative environment for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small businesses in urban areas. However, the issue of environmental noise within these spaces presents a challenge to comfort and productivity. This study focuses on the Bandung Creative Hub (BCH), a prominent co-working space in Bandung, Indonesia, and investigates the efficacy of facade engineering solutions, particularly the installation of secondary skin, in mitigating urban noise pollution. Through a comprehensive analysis utilizing both empirical measurements and computational simulations, the study aims to understand the intricacies of noise dynamics within the BCH co-working space. Empirical measurements using the Noise Tool software capture ambient noise levels, while computational simulations with IBANA provide predictive modeling of acoustic conditions. The results reveal a significant reduction in noise levels, with the sound level around the workspace corridor decreasing by approximately 23.3%, from 62 dB to 47 dB, indicating the effectiveness of facade engineering interventions. The limitations of prior research, which concentrated solely on barrier intervention methods and spacing ratio. Nevertheless, this study introduces a fresh perspective by examining the efficacy of secondary skin facade engineering in achieving noise standards and enhancing the quality of urban environments.

Abstract:
Abstract Mosques are places of worship for Muslims, there are various factors for mosques so that worship activities can run smoothly and solemnly, one of which is audial comfort which is very important in a place of worship. Some mosques are located in environments with high noise levels which affect the quality of the audial comfort in the mosque. This case study examines the audial comfort problem in the mosque which is on the edge of a cross-city road. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the audial comfort of the Al-Ghani Mosque which is located on the edge of the city lane and find solutions to reduce the noise impact by high traffic of vehicles. This study uses a case study method with a quantitative descriptive approach that aims to evaluate the audial comfort of a mosque. This study conducted data through field measurement. Noisetools.net and IBANA Calc-Software were used to analyse noise level of surrounding and indoor buildings. Indonesian National Standard (SNI) was used to judge the noise level quality. The results of this study indicate a high level of noise in the mosque and not reach the standard. Barrier and building material design intervened to achieve the standard target through simulation. This study provides an overview of how the mosque should be built by considering various factors, especially audial comfort.

Abstract:
Abstract Auditorium is a large-capacity room that is suitable for various activities. Due to the function itself, the auditorium needs a great audial quality so it can fulfill the user needs and ensure that the noises will not interrupt the event that was held inside the auditorium. Noise is an unwanted sound that will make the receiver feel uncomfortable or even disturbed when carrying out their activities, and it is one of the important factors to consider when designing a building or facility with the aim that the users of the building or facility can use it comfortably in accordance with the purpose of its creation. The main purpose of this research is to determine that the audial quality in the Auditorium room of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science Educations at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in Bandung has met the standard level of comfort according to the standard from KEP-48/MENLH/11/1996. The result from this research is the auditorium has a good result of noise level and is already in line with the standard level. Research using the method of measuring the decibel of the noise source with Decibel X, then analyzed the results with Noisetools.net to get the noise level that has been received by the receiver and using IBANA-Calc software to analyze the final noise level.

Firesheets, Nathan. "Modeling the transmission loss of typical home constructions exposed to aircraft noise." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50133.

Full text
Abstract:
Current aircraft noise guidelines are based primarily on outdoor sound levels. However, human perception is highly related to indoor response, particularly for residences. A research project has been conducted that provides insight into how typical residential dwelling envelopes affect sound transmitted indoors. A focus has been placed on the effect of residential dwelling envelopes on subsonic civil aircraft noise. Typical construction types across the United States have been identified and used to develop model predictions of outdoor-to-indoor transmission loss. While it was initially hypothesized that these construction types could be grouped by climate region, it was found that these constructions are better grouped according to their outermost construction layer. Further, the impact of systematically altering construction variables (such as the construction materials used and the ratio of window area to wall area) has been investigated. Results will be used to better understand trends for expected noise reduction for typical construction types around the United States. Additionally, comparisons have been made between the effect of older and more modern wall construction techniques on whole-house performance.

Davison, Julian. "Images and metaphor : an analysis of Iban collective representation." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1987. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28939/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Iban of Sarawak, East Malaysia, are the inhabitants of a vast equatorial rain forest which not only plays a crucial role in satisfying their material needs, but also provides them with a rich source of imagery for the portrayal of key cultural concerns and social values. That is to say, one finds that Iban collective representations are characterized by a profusion of floral and botanical forms, while the ritual use of plants features strongly in Iban religious life. Often these 'sacred' and 'profane' aspects of the plant world coincide, as in the case of Iban rice farming which both provides them with their staple diet, and at the same time is imbued with a deeply religious significance. The primary interest of this study, then, lies in its examination of the special relationship between man and plant in Iban culture. The research is based on library materials and takes, as its epistemological starting point, the idea that an understanding of metaphor can be usefully employed in the interpretation of symbolic phenomena. This approach works on two levels. On the one hand, there is the idea that a systematic examination of recurrent metaphorical forms - be they expressed in mythological narrative, ritual imagery, or everyday language - can be linked to dominant cultural values and social orientations. On the other hand, there is also the idea that a theory of metaphor - as developed in the field of literary criticism and semantics - can provide valuable insight into the way in which so-called 'symbolic phenomena' are 'actualized', or 'understood', by those for whom they operate. In the last instance, the study seeks to transcend the formal strictures of conventional structural analysis by suggesting ways in which the elaborate structures that are revealed by the latter are actually realized, or at least represented, in daily life - whether it be in the rarefied atmosphere of a religious ceremony or the more mundane setting at some commonplace activity. In doing so, the study raises a number of issues that are of a metaphysical nature - among them the question of indigenous notions of causation - thereby providing not just simply a re-evaluation of the existing ethnographic record, but also a point of departure for future inquiries in the field.

They all analyse genre of social community leaders using the theory of Grabe & Kaplan. (1996) All five articles re attached as appendices at the end of this assignment. The chapters 2 and 3 present an overview of different views expressed by different linguistics and researchers in relation to the genre theoretic approach and how these theories are applied in analyses. The views of Bhatia (1993) are also used in that he promotes the use of language in text when people communicate either in written or verbal format. Bhatia emphasizes the use of text linguistic properties and insights in the culture of participants to ensure that communication purpose is reached. Among other things, he invokes text structure, lexical choices, cohesion and coherence of text, content and theme are analyzed. This study investigates the social cognitive and linguistic choices and how they influence writing and reading. The purpose and meaning of the text is depicted as very important in the analysis of written text. (Bhatia; 1993) The first part of chapter 4 deals with the theory of Grabe & Kaplan (1996), which emphasizes the use of ethnography of writing. The ethnography of writing according to Grabe & Kaplan (1996) entails the answers to the following basic questions: Who is writing? To whom? For what purpose? Why? When? And how? The answers to these questions are to be formed in the analysis of the articles on Grabe & Kaplan's views on the relationship between ethnography of writing and lexicon of writing skills are also analyzed. The study also includes Halliday's (1984) views. Educating children in their home language environment makes them to learn better as they write in their own language and about the things they know. Lastly there is a short discussion about the relationship between the new genre approach and Outcomes-Based Education. (OBE) The similarities they share in connection with aims, goals and purposes as language teaching approached are touched upon.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie hou verband met die genre analise van vyf tekste (artikels) in Xhosa uit die Bona tydskrif. This work argues that the extractivists have an important hole as co- manager of the reserves, instead of simply users of the natural resources. The general objective of this dissertation is to analyze sustainable development in the context of the extractivist reserves. Within the Population Studies field, this investigation emphasizes that both thehuman dimension of the Amazon occupation and the population mobility are crucial for the success of the sustainable development agenda aimed by the "Seringueiros Land Reform"<br>Doutorado<br>Doutor em Ciências Sociais

Abstract:
Os resultados da pesquisa também proporcionaram a elaboração de recomendações visando à elaboração de futuros estudos de impactos ambientais.<br>In Brazil, the Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) are the main instrument for environmental feasibility analysis of enterprises, which can cause significant environmental impact, and is also indispensable part of environmental licensing process. This research is based on the geomorphological approach adopted in EIAs (Estudos de Impacto Ambiental, or Environmental Impact Studies, in free translation) applied for hydroelectric power plants, in the period of 1993-2014. We have analyzed 13 EIAs designed to hydroelectric power plant which licensing occurs at the federal level, analyzing information such as scale approach , theoretical school, content, assignment of technical staff , etc. All these data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the results allow verify the continuous technical improvement in the geomorphological approach of these environmental studies. The results have also provided the elaboration of recommendations for the development of future environmental impacts studies.

Abstract:
AbstractThere are an estimated 14,000 to 20,000 Iban living in Brunei Darussalam, most of them in the Belait and Temburong districts. They migrated to Brunei from Sarawak just before the Second World War in search of new land and an opportunity to improve their livelihoods. Not recognised as one of the seven indigenous ethnic groups (puak) by the state, the common narrative is that they face challenges of incorporation into the sultanate. In the Sukang subdistrict in Belait, there are eight Iban longhouses. This case study of the Iban of the Melilas longhouse documents how one particular community has successfully negotiated and managed their acceptance as full citizens of Brunei while retaining their Iban identity.

Abstract:
