Abstract:
The Ibadis are a Muslim religious minority with a long history and a rich philosophical and theological literature. This research claims that the Ibadis adherence to strict and puritan Islamic principles has not only affected their individual and social behavior, but also marked their approach to architecture, and the construction of cities. This article investigates the architecture of mosques developed in the four significant regions where this network of communities has settled since the ninth century: Oman, the M'zab valley in Algeria, Djerba in Tunisia, and Jebel Nafusa in Libya. Many features distinguish the architectural style of these from the typical mosque style. Although it may appear plural in its spatial arrangement, volumes, material and construction methods, the architecture of Ibadi mosques displays an “air de Famille” that relates them to their Arab-Berber origins and Ibadi religious principles. The present research is a comparative analysis of representative samples of this architecture in all the regions inhabited by the Ibadis. The second layer of scrutiny consisted of exploring the origins of its distinctive features in the meanings of the Ibadi Fiqh that concerned the act of building. It is a pioneering investigation of the relationship between the Ibadi religious principles and the architecture of their mosques. This research has established that the Ibadi Fiqh has addressed some aspects of the design of mosques and therefore have impacted, if not produced, some of the distinctive features of this architecture.

Abstract:
AbstractFrom at least the 17th century onward, a sizeable Maghribi Ibadi community lived, studied, and worked in the city of Cairo, centered around a trade agency, school, and library known as the ‘Buffalo Agency’ (Wikālat al-Jāmūs). Over nearly four centuries, this agency served as a hub for Ibadi intellectual activity and manuscript production. Despite its place of prominence in the history of early-modern Ibadi communities, manuscripts are some of the only surviving evidence of its existence. Using manuscript notes from and catalog data on manuscripts either held at the agency’s library or copied there, this article suggests that Ibadis were far from the small, isolated minority community in northern Africa they are often imagined to have been. Instead, the story of the Buffalo Agency points to the ways in which Ibadis very much belonged to the intellectual and commercial worlds of Sunni-dominated Cairo from the 17th–20th centuries.

Abstract:
In spite of a long-standing interest in the Ibadi community and its historical, social, religious and architectural legacy, its Ibadi scholarly literature remains largely unknown. The present research continues in the footsteps of the pioneering works of Joseph Schacht (Schacht, 1954) and Pierre Cuperly (Cuperly, 1988) on Ibadism. It aims to cast light on the Ibadi literature that represents an authentic source of information for the study of Ibadism past and present. This article analyzes an Ibadi manuscript from the twelfth century written by the scholar Abul’Abbas Ahmad. This document has been the primary reference for the most important sources of Ibadi legislation still in use by the community in its three main centers: M’zab, Djerba and Oman. The study of this document, along with other Ibadi scholarly literature on this topic, shows that this jurisprudence has regulated in detail the design, construction and management of mosques, and that this level of careful attention was due to the importance of the mosque for the instruction and organization of the community.

Abstract:
Abstract This article focuses on letters in private Ibadi libraries and their importance for understanding the primary means of communication among Ibadi communities in the premodern Maghrib. Using the example of a letter from the 7th/13th-century Ibadi Shaykh Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Ṣidghiyānī from the island of Djerba (Tunisia) to the Ibadis of Warjalān (Algeria), it seeks to highlight the importance of the archive of unedited Ibadi manuscript letters. This corpus of correspondences has not received the care and maintenance it merits because these letters do not belong to a recognized volume or book and are today located in private libraries unavailable to the public. The article also uses the example of al-Ṣidghiyānī’s letter to emphasize the importance of the manuscript letters and their role in maintaining intellectual ties among the Ibadi cities of the Maghrib. This brief article consists of two parts. The first part offers a general presentation of the archive where the letter is today held: the El Barounia Library in Djerba, Tunisia. The second part presents the manuscript and its author in their historical context.

Abstract:
When writing about Islamic sectarian diversity, the vast majority of authorspay attention only to Sunni and Shi‘i Islam. Yet there exists a third groupdrawn from the earliest conflicts that rent the Muslim ummah apart: the Ibadis. If they are mentioned at all, it is usually little more than a footnote remarkingthat this group is the remnant of the Khariji secession in 657. Yet this thirdgroup – today predominant in Oman and Zanzibar, with populations also inAlgeria, Libya, and Tunisia – played an important political and theologicalrole in the immediate post-Prophetic period. Due to this word’s negative connotation, however, Ibadis do not refer to themselves as Kharijis, a group historicallyviewed as religious extremists by other Muslims. Instead, “Ibadi”comes from the enigmatic Abdullah ibn Ibad/Abad who died early in theeighth century, although, as the author notes, it is likely that his successor Jabiribn Zayd played a more important role in founding the group.Addressing the dearth of English-language resources on Ibadi beliefs, ValerieJ. Hoffman has written The Essentials of Ibāḍī Islam in “an attempt tointroduce Ibadi Islamic theology to students and scholars of Islam” (p. 4) – atask in which she succeeds admirably. Her book is primarily a translation ofa theological primer and supplementary text, preceded by a short introductionon the origins and history of Ibadi Islam to orient the readers and prepare them ...

Abstract:
The twentieth-century Ibadi imamate of “inner” Oman (1913–1955) constituted one of the world's last theocracies. In a demise unique for the mid-twentieth century, it became assimilated into one of the world's last absolute monarchies. The 1955 shift from theocratic to dynastic rule met initially with the support, or at least the acquiescence, of most of the tribesmen and notables of the interior. This acquiescence at first appears surprising because the fundamentalist Islamic religious and political principles for which the imamate stood continued to be properly supported. One of these principles for Ibadis was that the imām, the spiritual and temporal leader of the Islamic community, should be the most qualified of available candidates and chosen by a consensus of the community's religious men of learning and notables, a notion markedly at contrast with the ascriptive one of dynastic rule. Conflict between these two forms of rule is basic to much of Islamic political history and to that of pre-1970 Oman in particular.

The Palaearctic Pollenia haeretica species-group is revised. Two species make up the group: Pollenia haeretica Séguy, 1928 (Algeria, Tunisia, Italy) and Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930 (Morocco). Pollenia rungsi Séguy, 1953 is established as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov. Pollenia funebris Villeneuve, 1933 is treated as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov., but the name is a junior primary homonym of Pollenia funebris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863, and therefore permanently invalid. A lectotype is designated for Pollenia haeretica Séguy to fix the interpretation of the name. The syntypes of Pollenia funebris Villeneuve are probably lost.

Abstract:
Scalability of distributed deep learning (DL) training with parameter server architecture is often communication constrained in large clusters. There are recent efforts that use a layer by layer strategy to overlap gradient communication with backward computation so as to reduce the impact of communication constraint on the scalability. However, the approaches cannot be effectively applied to the overlap between parameter communication and forward computation. In this paper, we propose and design iBatch, a novel communication approach that batches parameter communication and forward computation to overlap them with each other. We formulate the batching decision as an optimization problem and solve it based on greedy algorithm to derive communication and computation batches. We implement iBatch in the open-source DL framework BigDL and perform evaluations with various DL workloads. Experimental results show that iBatch improves the scalability of a cluster of 72 nodes by up to 73% over the default PS and 41% over the layer by layer strategy.

Abstract:
Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is considered protective against obesity and related cardiometabolic dysfunction. Indeed, activation of BAT improves glucose homeostasis and attenuates cardiovascular disease development. However, whether a reduction in BAT mass perturbs metabolic function and increases risk for cardiovascular disease remains largely unknown. To address this question, C57BL/6J male mice underwent a sham procedure or surgical bilateral excision of interscapular BAT (iBATx) and were fed a normal chow or a Western diet for 18 wk, creating four groups ( n = 10/group). Mice were housed at 25°C. As expected, the Western diet increased final body weight and adiposity; however, contrary to our hypothesis, iBATx did not potentiate adiposity independent of diet. Furthermore, iBATx did not affect indexes of glycemic control (HbA1c, fasting glucose and insulin, and glucose area under the curve during a glucose tolerance test) and produced minimal-to-no effects on lipid homeostasis. The absence of metabolic disturbances with iBATx was not attributed to regrowth of iBAT or a “browning” or proliferative compensatory response of other BAT depots. Notably, iBATx caused an increase in aortic stiffness in normal chow-fed mice only, which was associated with an increase in aortic uncoupling protein-1. Collectively, we demonstrated that, at 25°C (i.e., limited thermal stress conditions), a substantial reduction in BAT mass via iBATx does not disrupt systemic glucose metabolism, challenging the current dogma that preservation of BAT is obligatory for optimal metabolic function. However, iBATx caused aortic stiffening in lean mice, hence supporting the existence of an interplay between iBAT and aortic stiffness, independent of alterations in glucose homeostasis.

AbstractThe archaic cynipoid family Ibaliidae is revised. All described taxa are included in a checklist, and keys to valid taxa are presented. Host records include larvae of several woodwasp species (Siricidae: Siricinae and Tremicinae). Ibaliidae is considered to include the East Asian genus Heteribalia Sakagami, with five valid species, and the mainly Holarctic genus Ibalia Latreille, with 13 valid species, seven in the subgenus Ibalia and six in the subgenus Tremibalia. Heteribalia aureopilosa Maa, 1949 and H. subtilis Maa, 1949 are raised from subspecies to species level. Ibalia (T.) hunanica sp. n., is described from Oriental China. Three morphs of I. (T.) anceps, differing in wing colour pattern, are recognized, and distribution records of these morphs in North America are mapped. I. scalpellator Westwood, 1837 is synonymized with I. anceps Say, 1824; I. takaehihoi Yasumatsu, 1937 with I. jakowlewi Jacobson, 1899; I.fulviceras Yang, 1991 with I. ornata Belizin, 1968; and I. yunshae Yang et Liu,1992 with I. rufipes drewseni Borries, 1891. Abstract:
Abstract Since becoming a nation-state in 1970, Oman's expanding heritage industry has included the restoration of castles and citadels, including the fort at Nizwa. The fort was once the administrative and juridical center of the Ibadi Imamate (1913–58). As the site of sharia adjudication, it sanctioned a past of primarily moral nature, oriented toward God and salvation and grounded in Ibadi doctrine and practice. This mode of history implied that everyday interactions and relationships could be assessed through exemplary forms of morality, as embodied by virtuous forbears. Yet the heritage project in modern Oman has treated history and Islam as seemingly separate, erasing formal awareness of the sociopolitical and ethical relationships that once characterized Ibadi rule. Today, the historical work done by the fort as a heritage site entails a progress-oriented future, reconfiguring Ibadi Islam in the process.

Abstract:
Background: Isolated bulbar amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (IBALS) is a regional variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with weakness restricted to the bulbar muscles for at least 2 years, and slower progression than generalized ALS. Bulbar-onset generalized ALS, by contrast, typically has a more rapid progression than limb-onset ALS.Objective: To characterize patients with IBALS and compare them to patients with isolated bulbar disease at presentation who progress to generalized ALS.Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients seen in our ALS specialty clinic at the University of Kansas Medical Center between 2001-2011. Results: Of 543 patients seen in the ALS clinic, 150 presented with bulbar symptoms at disease onset: 28 (18.7%) had bulbar signs and no evidence of extremity involvement on exam or electrodiagnostic testing at their initial visit; and 14 (9.3%) had weakness restricted to the bulbar muscles after 2 years of follow up (IBALS). IBALS patients were 57.1% male, with a mean age of symptom onset of 60.8 years (range 39-77 years). The mean disease duration was 3.1 years (range of 2-8 years), with 50% mortality at a mean follow up of 3.5 years. Minimal denervation changes were seen in at least one limb in 6 subjects (42.9%). Other clinical features included: 4 subjects (28.6%) had cognitive impairment, 4 (28.6%) had pseudo-bulbar affect, and 5 subjects (35.7%) had impaired eye movements on smooth pursuit. Conclusion: Isolatred bulbar ALS IBALS is an identifiable restricted regional ALS pattern if there is no clinical limb weakness 2 years after symptom onset. It may have a slower progression from typical ALS. The biologic factors that account for the IBALS restricted pattern are unknown.

Abstract:
The Sea Dayaks, better known as the Ibans, inhabit nearly the whole of Sarawak. The Ibans belong to the Proto-Malay groups and historically, they were from the Kapuas Valley in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They migrated to Sarawak about fifteen generations ago in the mid 16th century (the 1630s). They went to the state through the Kumpang Valley and inhabit Batang Ai and then split to several places in Sarawak (Morgan, 1968). Although the Ibans have a social status in their traditional belief, they do not have a hierarchy of social status such as the Orang Ulu. However, they have elevated the status so-called Pengulu, Tuai Rumah, Tuai Burung, Lemambang, Manang, Beliau, Tukang Sabak, dan Indu Takar. The era of modernization has led to changes to the knowledge of the young generation, especially the younger generation of the Ibans who lack knowledge about the function and role of each rank status in their communities. Therefore, this study was conducted qualitatively through an interview with expert informants, observation, and documentation. This research was hoped to contribute to the general knowledge of the Iban community and other communities in the preservation of the function and role of each social status in the Iban community.

Abstract:
This article examines an Arabist-Salafi press network in the interwar period that operated between Algeria, Tunisia, Zanzibar, and Cairo and involved members of two sectarian communities, Sunnis and Ibadis. This Arabist-Salafi press network created a public sphere of intellectual engagement in which Salafism and nationalism were interwoven, producing a nationalist discourse transgressing post World War I borders of identity and linking the three layers of nationalism—the territorial, the Pan-Arab, and the Pan-Islamic—together. These layers not only intersected but also legitimized one another. Thus, this article not only expands the geographic horizons of Arab nationalism but also contributes to the scholarship examining the correlation between Islam and national identity in the interwar period.

Abstract:
The citation of Charles Spence Bate has become a source of uncertainly in the literature. Indeed, for some taxa his authority is given as “Spence Bate”, whilst others “Bate” e.g. Artemesia longinaris Spence Bate, 1888 compared with Ibacus brevipes Bate, 1888. In order to resolve this inconsistency, a lengthy manual search of selected contemporary journals for the period from ca. 1854 to 1889 was undertaken with special reference to the name Charles Spence Bate being listed alphabetically by family/surname either under “Bate”, “Spence Bate” or “Spence-Bate”. Overwhelming evidence indicated that his family/surname is Bate. Furthermore, as there are a number of carcinologists also with the family name Bate, therefore it is recommended that taxa described by Charles Spence Bate should be referred to as C.S. Bate, for example Artemesia longinaris C.S. Bate, 1888 and Ibacus brevipes C.S. Bate, 1888.

Abstract:
The article examines the ideological core and technique of the poetic art of the most famous poets of Oman, the state religion of which is Ibadism. An interdisciplinary approach, which included historical review and linguistic methods of analysing original texts, made it possible to identify the content and artistic features of the Ibadites works. A close connection was revealed between the theory and history of Ibadism not only with the themes of the works (religious with a predominance of the motive of exile, repentance, justice and a call to civil action), but also with the forms of their implementation, such as refusal to directly mention the epithets of Allah, certain types of chronotopes, suggestive techniques, the use of the full semantic potential of the word, etc. The authors assert that Ibadite poetry has a political orientation and that civil Arab poetry could reach its heights only in the Ibadite environment. The peculiarities of the Ibadite poetics are traced mainly in the texts of such a prominent figure in the culture of Oman as Abu Muslim al-Bahlani.

Kalabari-Ijo (hereafter, Kalabari) is one of the four lects of the KOIN group of East Ijo of the Ijo language cluster in the Niger-Congo phylum (Williamson & Blench 2000: 22). The other lects in this group are Kirike (Okrika), Ibani and Nkoroo. Kirike and Ibani are mutually intelligible with Kalabari, and Nkoroo is partially so. All the lects in this group are spoken in Rivers State, Nigeria. In addition, there are three other groups of Ijo: Nembe-Akaha (Akassa) in East Ijo, Inland Ijo (Oruma, Akita (Okordia), Biseni) and Izon, which together make up West Ijo. These groups are all spoken in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, with Izon spreading further to the west (Williamson, p.c.).

Abstract:
Abstract Within the framework of studies concerning the importance of European manuscript collections for Ibadi history, this article aims at retracing the history of an archive put together by the French scholar Auguste Bossoutrot (1856–1937). This archive gathered a quantity of materials on the Arabic and Berber languages collected during his life. In particular, some of the manuscripts contain parts of a long religious work in Berber (Kitāb al-Barbariyya), discovered in the island of Djerba (Tunisia) among the Ibadi community of the island towards the end of the nineteenth century. This text was firstly discovered and reported to the scientific community by another French scholar, A. De Calassanti-Motylinski (1854–1907), but his untimely death prevented him from publishing it and the whereabouts of the manuscripts that contained it remained unknown until the discovery of Bossoutrot’s papers, which contained the longest extant copy of the work (about 900 pages).

Abstract:
A review of larval morphology of some 50 species belonging to 15 of the 16 existing genera of Palinuroidea is presented. The taxonomic value of larval characters of the group is discussed, and a phylogenetic scheme of the whole group has been attempted. Phylogenetic and phenetic data obtained during this review show good agreement with a previously published evolutionary scheme for the Palinuridae based on adult characters, although Palinurus seems to be a more primitive genus than Palinustus and Justitia. From the point of view of larval morphology, Palinurellus (Synaxidae) seems to be the most primitive genus. Data on evolution of the Scyllaridae show three well differentiated groups: the more primitive (as typified by the larvae) Scyllarides-Arctides-Parribacus and Ibacus-Evibacus groups and the more specialized Thenus-Scyllarus group. Larval morphology also suggests that Parribacus is closer to Scyllarides and Arctides than to the Ibacus-Evibacus group. Evolution in Palinuroidea is seen as a process of radiation of the deep-water genera to coastal waters with a progressive shortening of larval life, although secondary trends towards shortening of larval life have also occurred in the more primitive deep-water genera (Puerulus, Linuparus and Palinurus).

Abstract:
This study was developed to evaluate the clinical, hematological, and performance parameters of calves affected by diarrhea caused by the bacterial enteric pathogen Escherichia coli, treated with three different protocols containing sulfonamides. Fourteen Holstein calves were monitored from birth to 60 days of age, and divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (n=5) animals were treated with 80 g of Kaopek®, Ibasa, Brazil, administered orally (BM), dissolved in 160 ml of water every 24 h; Group 2 (n=4) received IM sulfadiazine and trimethoprim (Ibatrim®, Ibasa, Brazil), and Group 3 (n=5) animals were treated with 80 g of Kaopek®, Ibasa, Brazil, which is made up of 16 g of phthalylsulfathiazole, associated with 2.28 g neomycin sulfate, 1.6 g of pectin, and 80 g of kaolin, dissolved in 160 ml of water and administered every 24 h by mouth, in addition to sulfadiazine and trimethoprim (Ibatrim®, Ibasa, Brazil), at a daily dose of 16 mg/kg live weight, through IM injection. During the study, the animals were clinically evaluated, and once they were diagnosed with diarrhea, feces samples were collected to identify the bacterial enteric pathogen, antibiogram, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and coproparasitological exams. Blood samples were collected to evaluate the hematological profile, and the performance profile was monitored weekly. In the clinical examination, all calves presented a reduction in body temperature (<39.2°C) and some improvement in hydration after treatment (p=0,31). However, group 2 had a better concentration of lymphocytes and TP concerning the other animals, as well as better performance. Besides, E.coli was detected in 100% of feces samples. Thus, the therapeutic protocols with sulfonamides used to treat bovine neonatal diarrhea were effective in the clinical improvement of the animals. Nonetheless, the protocol with systemic therapy using sulfadiazine and trimethoprim (Ibatrim®, Ibasa, Brazil) intramuscularly, provided better performance, with better weight gain, and body development of the animals.

Everyone accepts a one size fits all model cannot deliver successful democratic reform. But it is less widely understood that the process is open-ended, with no predetermined finishing line. Development depends on a political version of bio-diversity, in which democracy emerges organically out of existing local traditions and practices. In the case of Oman a deeply rooted tradition of consultative rule, and the distinctive philosophy of Ibadism has been shaping democratic development for 30 years.

Abstract:
The historiography of Arab nationalism has tended to concentrate on the secular press from the Mashriq, especially the Cairo–Beirut axis, at the expense of the religious nationalist press and the non-Mashriqi one. There is often an assumption that reliance on the secular press from the Mashriq alone can provide a clear picture of Arab intellectual life and that a proper analysis of that thought can be confined to a few intellectual centers in the eastern Arab world. Although there has never been an explicit claim that such a focus is the end of the story, there have not been enough attempts to look beyond the Cairo–Beirut axis and beyond its secular press organs in search of a broader story of the depth and breadth of Arab nationalism. This article addresses this imbalance by examining an Arabist-Salafi press network that operated between Algeria, Tunisia, Zanzibar, and Egypt and involved members of two sectarian communities, Sunnis and Ibadis.
