Full textThe Voice Main Card (VMC) functions as an enhanced telephone answering machine and is designed as a plug-in card for the IBM PC and compatibles. In addition to standard answering machine functions, the VMC features programmable outgoing message selection, message routing, response to caller's touch tone signals, and remote programming ability. The VMC will answer incoming telephone calls, deliver outgoing messages which are Programmably selectable from as many as 16 digitized audio messages stored on the PC's hard disk, record incoming messages to the hard disk or optionally to an external tape recorder, route messages to a specified receiver, respond to a caller's touch tone signals, and enter a remote programming mode as a result of a special code sent by the caller. Audio messages are processed digitally via A/D and D/A converters which receive and send 8-bit data to and from the IBM PC through a selectable port address. The A/D conversion is implemented with the ADC0802 which is operated at a clock rate of 512 kHz. The D/A conversion is implemented with the DAC0830. Interface with the telephone line is accomplished with the speech circuit TP5700 coupled through opto-couplers. Messages are recorded using an external 600-ohm dynamic microphone and played back through an external 8-ohm speaker. A full-featured, pull-down menu program is provided with the VMC and implements all programmable functions. Data In/Out (I/O) with the card is interrupt-driven to allow apparent simultaneous disk I/O.

Full textMolntjänster är ett av de områden som utvecklas snabbast idag. Företag såsom Amazon, Google, Microsoft och IBM tillhandahåller dessa tjänster i flera former. Allteftersom utvecklingen tar fart, uppstår den naturliga frågan ”Vad kan man göra med den här tekniken idag?”. Tekniken erbjuder en skalbarhet mot använd hårdvara och antalet användare, som är attraktiv för utvecklare och företag. Det här examensarbetet försöker svara på hur molntjänster kan användas genom att kombinera det med frågan ”Är det möjligt att skapa en automatiserad examensarbetesrapportsgranskare?”. Genom att avgränsa undersökningen till IBM Watson molntjänster försöker arbetet huvudsakligen svara på huvudfrågan ”Är det möjligt att skapa en automatiserad examensarbetesrapportsgranskare med Watson molntjänster?”. Därmed var målet med arbetet att skapa en automatiserad examensarbetesrapportsgranskare. Projektet följde en modifierad version av Bunge’s teknologiska undersökningsmetod, där det första steget var att skapa en definition för en mjukvaruexamensarbetesrapportsgranskare följt av en utredning av de Watson molntjänster som ansågs relevanta från litteratur studien. Dessa undersöktes sedan vidare i empirisk studie. Genom de empiriska studierna skapades förståelse för tjänsternas tillämpligheter och begränsningar, för att kunna kartlägga hur de kan användas i en automatiserad examensarbetsrapportsgranskare. De flesta tjänster behandlades grundligt, förutom Machine Learning, som skulle behövt vidare undersökning om inte tidsresurserna tog slut. Projektet visar på att Watson molntjänster är användbara men inte perfekt anpassade för att granska examensarbetesrapporter. Även om inte målet uppnåddes, undersöktes Watson molntjänster, vilket kan ge förståelse för deras användbarhet och framtida implementationer för att möta den skapade definitionen.

Full textThe aim of this work was to perform Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) measurements for the 153Eu deformed nucleus associated to Ml scissors mode. Using the bremsstrahlung photon beam of the Stuttgart Dynamitron (endpoint energy 4.3 MeV) and high resolution Ge spectrometers, detailed information was obtained on excitation energies, decay widths, transition probabilities, and branching ratios. The results are compared to those observed recently for the neighboring odd nuclei 161,163Dy, 155,157Gd and 159Tb and with the Interacting Boson Fermion Model (IBFM). Whereas in the odd Dy isotopes the dipole strength is rather concentrated, both Gd isotopes show a strong fragmentation of the strength into about 25 (155Gd) and 90 transitions (157Gd) in the energy range 2-4 MeV. The nucleus 153Eu as compared to these odd Dy, Gd and Tb isotopes exhibits a small fragmentation with low strength. In general the observed total strength in the odd nuclei is reduced by a factor of 2-3 as compared to their neighboring even-even isotopes. The different fragmentation behavior of the dipole strengths in the odd Dy, Gd, Tb and Eu isotopes is unexplained up to now.

Full textIncreasingly, MNC’s transfer parts of their operation to low wage countries in order to cut costs. The theory refers to this as to ‘offshoring’. The transfer of knowledge is a critical part of a successful offshoring project. In cross-boarder projects culture will influence the work. Thus, the aim of this paper is to deepen our understanding of the effects of culture and to reveal unexplored areas in the existing theories, through that the paper contributes with implications for how cultural challenges can be dealt with in an operational context.
By connecting leading theories on knowledge transfer, offshoring and culture, a theoretical framework has been created. In order to expand the existing the theories a case study was conducted at IBM, studying two offshoring projects to India. The case study was conducted through eight qualitative interviews with six different respondents. All respondents were managers in IBM Nordic and IBM India. The interviews were conducted individually and as focus groups and carried out as discussions. The empirical data presented in the study also consists of information derived from strategy documents,provided to us by IBM.
We found a number of factors to be considered in offshoring projects, which were not part of the theoretical framework,e.g. responsibilities for governance of the project should be decided and that the HR department should be involved from the start. Furthermore we found some areas of the process, which were more influenced by culture than others, such as what creates motivation and trust.

The front end of the IBM PC factory integration & deployment process is a pre-engagement process. In this study, the pre-engagement process, was analyzed. The organizational structure in the pre-engagement process and the pre-engagement process flow were examined. The information flow in both the global supply chain and the IBM customer solution center was identified. The current service-offering model in the IBM customer solution center was also described. Two problems in the pre-engagement process were examined. A methodology to probe the problems and to figure out the root causes was proposed and applied. Five root causes were determined. Solutions were proposed to address those root causes and furthermore, their benefits and concerns were evaluated. In the end, a conclusion that Checklist A, Checklist B, and the continuous improvement process were the best and feasible solutions was drawn.

Field service, as an important focus area of service operations, has increasingly become a critical component of the overall service offering by high-tech enterprises. Enhancing productivity by optimizing field services could bring significant benefits to the organization. This thesis investigates the field deployment process in IBM PC services and attempts to identify potential areas of improvements by applying principles in capacity management, customer-oriented services, as well as IT technologies, such as database and the Internet. In addition, demand statistics are analyzed to provide important insights into the limitations of the existing largely manual planning and scheduling process. A transformation plan is developed, with due consideration to both the capacity and efficiency of the Customer Solution Center and the overall experience of the end users.

Full textThe advent of the Personal Computer into the technical world has, at an extremely reasonable expense and trouble, made available to us, considerable computational power. But, as it was with computers, the next logical step is to have multiple units running in concert, or, in other words, sharing the load. This leads to the concept of Multiprocessing in order to attain an enhancement in operation speed and superior efficiency. The IBM PC is a versatile and market proven personal computer with a very large volume of software support and the STD Bus is a standard that has been developed to cope with a variable support, i.e. different processors and different I/O capabilities. Together, they combine the user interface - the display and keyboard · of the PC, the processing capabilities of the PC, the I/O capabilities of the STD Bus and the support processing possible on the STD Bus. The resulting system is powerful, easy to use and it has a lot of scope for development.

Full textAlegando razões de eficiência, muitas firmas vêm crescentemente adotando a terceirização de TI como um meio de conseguir economia de custos, maior foco em suas operações e alinhamento estratégico. Não obstante as razões verbalmente alegadas pelas empresas para terceirizar serviços de TI todas elas buscam a prestação de serviço em TI como uma forma de transferir a eficiência da prestadora de serviços para a empresa cliente. Com a competitividade cada vez maior entre as prestadoras de serviço e por mais que as empresas prestadoras de serviço tentem diferenciar-se entre si, o fato é que não existem muitas diferenças que possam saltar a vista entre os grandes prestadores de serviço de terceirização de TI atuais, pois fornecem de forma quase que indiferente custo, qualidade, expertise técnica, métodos e processos, experiência comprovada, boa saúde financeira, presença global. Mas porque alguns provedores de serviço de TI conseguem ser mais eficiente que seus clientes? Porque os departamentos de TI, das empresas clientes, têm dificuldade de copiar o modelo destes fornecedores e operar com os mesmos patamares de eficiência? Quais as dificuldades e barreiras que existem? Quais as melhores práticas adotadas pela provedora de serviço e pelo cliente para realizar uma terceirização de serviços de TI com sucesso? Este trabalho analisa em caráter exploratório, através de um estudo de caso, a terceirização de TI feita pela CPR (Canadian Pacific Railroad) em 2003 junto à IBM Canadá, aonde seu custo contratual teve uma redução de cerca de 20% do custo original de operação da CPR , buscando identificar porque que algumas empresas prestadoras de serviço de TI conseguem ser mais eficiente que seus clientes, porque não se optou em realizar a transformação internamente e quais as melhores práticas adotadas pela provedora de serviço para realizar uma terceirização de serviços de TI com sucesso. Para isto, o trabalho parte da literatura para indicar possíveis fatores motivadores para a terceirização assim como as melhores práticas de gestão utilizadas atualmente pelas prestadoras de serviço e empresas clientes para uma terceirização de serviços de TI. Posteriormente segue para uma etapa de campo, em busca de elementos que permitam a análise de sua relevância. Os fundamentos teóricos para a terceirização se basearam na: Teoria de Custos de Transação (TCT -Transaction Cost Theory) e na Teoria Baseada em Recursos (RBT-Resource Base Theory). Na etapa de campo explorou-se um projeto de terceirização de infra-estrutura de TI entre a IBM e CPR (Canadian Pacific Railroad), aonde foram feitas entrevistas estruturadas com os gestores do cliente CPR, gestores da prestadora de serviços IBM, assim como analisados materiais produzidos pelo projeto, com o objetivo de identificar porque algumas empresas prestadoras de serviço de TI conseguem ser mais eficiente que seus clientes. Os resultados encontrados apontam que a CPR possuía uma menor eficiência do que a IBM por razões: de foco, de processo e de escala. Tais características são em si não facilmente imitáveis pela empresa cliente tornando a parceria estratégica a melhor solução para o aumento de eficiência operacional na empresa cliente.

Sustainability is one of the greatest challenges we are faced with. To be successfully addressed, a variety of stakeholders, including business, must be involved. With this in mind, this thesis seeks to further our understanding of how a firm's response to sustainability can, in addition to making business sense, be effective and sustainable. This inevitably entails dealing with the classic tension between "passion" and "process." Therefore, the thesis explores how a balance between these two may be found by examining IBM's extensive and long-sustained environmental management experience. IBM has a recognized record of environmental responsibility that has matured over almost 40 years, surviving periods of great difficulty for the company. Its environmental sustainability program and its commitment to corporate responsibility, a continuum from legal and compliance activities to engagements that help the company develop value-creation opportunities, is clearly strategic. Its efforts - a combination of activities that address immediate and future business pressures - are in tune with what the literature considers to be "best practice" in environmental corporate sustainability. IBM's experience confirms both the importance of nourishing an emotional commitment to sustainability and of establishing a process - in its case, an environmental management system - that enables the company to systematically identify and manage the environmental impacts of its operations.
