Abstract:
Corporations play a major role in artificial intelligence (AI) research, development, and deployment, with profound consequences for society. This paper surveys opportunities to improve how corporations govern their AI activities so as to better advance the public interest. The paper focuses on the roles of and opportunities for a wide range of actors inside the corporation—managers, workers, and investors—and outside the corporation—corporate partners and competitors, industry consortia, nonprofit organizations, the public, the media, and governments. Whereas prior work on multistakeholder AI governance has proposed dedicated institutions to bring together diverse actors and stakeholders, this paper explores the opportunities they have even in the absence of dedicated multistakeholder institutions. The paper illustrates these opportunities with many cases, including the participation of Google in the U.S. Department of Defense Project Maven; the publication of potentially harmful AI research by OpenAI, with input from the Partnership on AI; and the sale of facial recognition technology to law enforcement by corporations including Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft. These and other cases demonstrate the wide range of mechanisms to advance AI corporate governance in the public interest, especially when diverse actors work together.

Abstract:
AbstractEngineering organizations are actively seeking ways to better enable concurrent engineering. At the IBM Federal Systems Company (FSC), we are finding behavioral analysis an excellent means to integrate the disciplines needed to develop complex systems.Key to effective use of behavioral analysis are: (1) a shared methodology and (2) the support environment which makes the methodology executable. At IBM FSC, we are finding RDD‐100®, developed by the Ascent Logic Corporation, to provide an environment which is highly compatible with our existing system development methodology. We have found Requirements Driven Development, RDD‐100®, developed by Ascent Logic Corporation, to be well accepted by all of our various engineering organizations. Our expectation is that implementation of our methodology using RDD‐100® will greatly decrease the development cycle time as it encourages concurrent participation in the definition of the system model.

Abstract:
This paper aims at solving the high level of attrition rate at IBM. Data scientists would like to measure the relationships between the attrition rate and other descriptive information such as gender, age, working experience and position, to predict the attrition status and look for commons on those who have left or will probably leave the corporation in the future. Based on those predictions, appropriate summaries of their characteristics can be sketched for the manager in IBM to provide better working conditions to lower the rate. The main prediction method in this paper will be tree-based including simple decision tree and other advanced techniques, and the prediction results will be shown as scatter plots. While XGBoost shows the highest performance in this study, it will be selected as the prediction method to predict the attrition status of IBM employees. With such a model, IBM data analysts will be able to do further research on the reasons for attrition and thus lower the attrition rate.

Abstract:
In the decade after the Second World War IBM rebuilt its European operations as integrated, wholly owned subsidiaries of its World Trade Corporation, chartered in 1949. Long before the European common market eliminated trade barriers, IBM created its own internal networks of trade, allocating the production of different components and products between its new subsidiaries. Their exchange relationships were managed centrally to ensure that no European subsidiary was a consistent net importer. At the heart of this system were eight national electric typewriter plants, each assembling parts produced by other European countries. IBM promoted these transnational typewriters as symbols of a new and peaceful Europe and its leader, Thomas J. Watson, Sr., was an enthusiastic supporter of early European moves toward economic integration. We argue that IBM’s humble typewriter and its innovative system of distributed manufacturing laid the groundwork for its later domination of the European computer business and provided a model for the development of transnational European institutions.

Abstract:
Innovation seen as the development of new methods, tools, new approaches and improvement of the existing processes is generally synonymous with “young” and modern companies. Hardly anyone would expect after 100 years of a company’s existence that it is able to continually meet the highest standards of business and compete on the international market, especially in terms of innovation. An example of such a company is International Business Machines (IBM). The company was founded in 1911 and initially dealt with the production of various equipment: weights, meat slicers, or data storage media, such as punch cards and machines for them. The latter have become over time the most important activity of the corporation. At the turn of the 1960s, IBM introduced hard disk drives, developed the world’s first storage, and introduced to customers the software language Fortran, which is still in use. In 1969, IBM computers were used by NASA during the first man on the moon mission. In 1981, the company created the first personal computer IBM 5150 PC, which the weekly magazine “Time” dubbed “machine of the year”. Thanks to its innovations, regardless of the era, IBM has always been ahead of the reality in which it is located. Today IBM announced that in 2019 it will have a supercomputer, which should come close to matching the power of the human brain. At the moment, BlueGene already copies 4.5% of human brain activity. The activities of such a powerful company are not only associated with market developments. In the 1990s, the company began to focus on new market areas, in particular services. In November this year, IBM introduced the five innovations that over the next five years would significantly improve the quality of life of urban citizens around the world, as well as reduce potential hazards. Therefore, the vision of the company seems to be right – our customer’s success, innovation for us and the world. The purpose of this paper is to present innovative solutions implemented by IBM in terms of technology and services.

Abstract:
PurposeSince business competition has become more intense throughout the world, most enterprises are seeking to engage in business cooperation with other partners in order to enhance their competitive strengths. However, they do not necessarily develop mature information technologies’ (ITs) capabilities and skills internally but rather outsource them to IT providers. Therefore, the benefits received by firms which adopt the approach of business cooperation with IT providers have become an interesting issue for managers and shareholders.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted an event study methodology for apprising the short-term business value from the stock market. The authors predicted that investors will react as they receive news coverage about the strategy of business cooperation between outsourcing firms and an IT provider, International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation. The authors then collected all news coverage regarding the firms which had announced business cooperation with IBM and observed different types of abnormal returns.FindingsOn analyzing 53 announcements of cooperation with IBM from 2008 to 2016, the authors found that the announcement of business cooperation had a significantly positive influence on companies' market value.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the issue for market reaction to the announcement of business cooperation with IBM.

Abstract:
Purpose - This paper evaluated the inclusive business model (IBM) adopted by the KALASAG Farmers Producers Cooperative (KALASAG-FPC) in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Specifically, the study assessed the Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (FEP) of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) relative to KALASAG-FPC in order to describe how an IBM affected the farmers' lives and their business operations. By determining the perceived level of inclusiveness of the IBM from three perspectives, strategies were crafted to improve business model inclusivity. Design/Methodology/Approach - In discussing the activities in the business model and the business operations of the cooperative, the case approach, and the IBM principles and radar chart from the study entitled “Is Inclusive Business for you? Managing and upscaling an inclusive company: Lessons from the field” by Sopov et al. (2014) were used. Findings - The results showed that the business model was perceived by the farmers, program implementers, and the main researcher to be the most inclusive in three different areas, but least inclusive in one same area. Therefore, the discussion focused on what led to these perceptions, and what can be done to enhance the inclusivity of the business model. Research Implications - The recommendations focused on activities that promote the chain-wide collaboration of the IBM players in order to solve problems faced not only by the farmers but also by the program implementers and partners. The study’s contribution lies in demonstrating the application of the 2014 study framework on an IBM in the Philippine context.

The aim of the article is to systematise and generalise new knowledge on operational analytics and consider specific automated information systems in terms of the present and prospects for its development. The research methodology was based on the general scientific principles of unity of theory and practice, systematics, complexity, and comprehensiveness of knowledge. The use of general scientific (description, analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalisation) and special (bibliographic, sample observation, grouping, content analysis) methods at the empirical and theoretical levels of research contributed to achieving this goal. The scientific novelty of the study is to generalise and systematise new and available knowledge on operational analytics in terms of present and prospects for its development within one study. Conclusions. The case of the International Business Machines Corporation American electronic corporation (pronounced IBM, also known as IBM or «Blue Giant»), one of the world’s largest manufacturers of all types of computers and software, one of the largest providers of global information networks, the author described and analysed the species diversity and features of the use of automated information and analytical systems based on artificial intelligence, which are available today to many users, and tomorrow will become a daily reality for any company. The information systems and products that IBM now offers to the Ukrainian consumer are briefly described: systems designed for analytics by areas of application; Big Data analysts; data visualisation; policy analytics; data integration systems; advanced analytics products; information systems of advanced analytics based on the Internet of Things; automated systems for forecasting analytics. Attention is focused on the features and benefits of operational analytics and its capabilities in the practical plane of use. The expediency of applying certain automated information systems according to the sphere of activity and stages of information analysis is substantiated. The advantages and prospects of operational (online) analytics development in data analytics are considered.

Abstract:
This paper deals with Alternative Dispute Resolution in labour relations within a company in the French context. By contrast with the United States and Canada, mediation and arbitration are rarely used in France for resolving individual or collective labour relations disputes. It is therefore interesting to study such voice procedures in labour relations in France and analyse their impact on procedural justice and equity within the company. The study also analyses the incentives to use mediation/arbitration, in labour relations, as well as the disincentives. It highlights the importance of information and communication with the employees in fostering positive attitudes to it and reducing their fears. This is illustrated by an empirical study of the French subsidiary of the IBM Corporation. We focus our attention on the IBM ‘open door’ policy and describe the results of a quantitative statistical analysis of 203 respondents.

This paper explores the corporate financing behavior of four large electrical-related industry firms in the US and Japan. The interesting findings from our case study are as follows. (1) First, as for Apple Inc. (Apple), our results can be interpreted that the firm raises funds by equity when its market value is high. Further, our empirical results also show that the Apple is considered to finance the funds for R&D and tangible assets mainly by debt rather than equity. (2) Second, regarding International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), the firm is considered to finance the funds for R&D mainly by equity rather than debt; however, the debt ratio of this firm is generally high. (3) Third, as for Panasonic Corporation (Panasonic), the firm is considered to finance the funds for property, plant, and equipment mainly by debt rather than equity, and the rapid increase of its debt ratio is seen in the recent period. (4) Finally, as to Sony Corporation (Sony), the company is considered to finance the funds for property, plant, and equipment and R&D expenses mainly by equity rather than debt whilst its debt ratio is also generally high.

We contextualize its development within a nested set of institutions and identities: IBM's Nordic operations, its European business, and its World Trade Corporation. Its development was profoundly shaped by Finland's unique geopolitical position during the Cold War. IBM's internal structures anticipated and paralleled those of the European Union, with mechanisms for international cooperation, for the creation of transnational identities, and for the resolution and regulation of disputes between national subsidiaries.

Abstract:
Objective The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of morbidly adherent placenta in pregnancies after endometrial ablation. Study Design We performed a retrospective cohort analysis using a large, multiinstitutional deidentified clinical database, IBM EPM: Explore (IBM Corporation, Somers, NY). We identified women who underwent endometrial ablation and had a subsequent delivery between 1999 and 2016. Patients with a delivery and no prior ablation were used as controls. The association between morbidly adherent placenta, ablation, and other known risk factors for morbidly adherent placenta was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Results Of 162,100 reproductive-aged women who underwent endometrial ablation, 2,770 women (1.71%) subsequently had a delivery. The rate of morbidly adherent placenta was 1 in 13.9 pregnancies after ablation compared with 1 in 838.7 pregnancies in the control group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 20.22, p < 0.0001). Conclusion Pregnancies that occurred after endometrial ablation were associated with increased rates of morbidly adherent placenta.

Abstract:
In recent years, the concept of health has gradually fit into people’s lives through the government’s promotion. The indoor sports complex is becoming more and more popular, offering people the opportunity to engage in physical and recreational activities regardless of weather conditions. Psychological and social abundance is the key to improving happiness, and the most important thing is to treat and care for yourself. Many fitness venues have emerged to provide athletes with a wide range of choices. However, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is caused by a virus mainly transmitted through direct contact or air droplets, has had a severe impact on indoor gym users. Therefore, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Health-Promoting Lifestyle (HPL), this research investigated athletes’ behavioral intentions regarding sports halls and perceived risks as interfering variables. For data collection, we collected data samples from sports complexes athletes in Taiwan. A total of 263 responses were analyzed via SPSS 20.0 (IBM Corporation, New York, NY, USA) and AMOS 20.0 (IBM Corporation, New York, NY, USA) seis tests. The study’s results indicate that health-promoting lifestyle cognition has a positive and significant effect on behavioral intention; athletes’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control significantly affects the behavioral intention of using the facilities in a sports complex. Athletes’ risk perceptions have an interference effect between HPL, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intentions of using the facilities in a sports complex. Sports venue managers can refer to the results of this project to develop marketing strategies and promoting.

Abstract:
This article draws on ethnographic data to explore lived experiences and narratives of mitigation unfolding in a toxic waste site in Endicott, New York, the birthplace of International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and the location of a contentious U.S. EPA Superfund Site. It introduces the political ecology of mitigation concept and showcases how this critical approach to toxics repair can inform contemporary environmental social science discussions of environmental contamination and risk society. Envisioning the political ecology of mitigation, it is argued, calls for an ethnographic approach cognizant of politics of knowledge and expertise that invoke competing visions of mitigation in general and the efficacy of mitigation technologies and science in particular. Mitigation decisions are political and not simply scientific decisions. The political ecology of mitigation explored here pays close attention to the practices and processes through which toxics mitigation is wielded and negotiated. It shows how such practices and processes may inform contemporary perspectives on toxic neoliberal environments and ecologies.Key words: political ecology, toxics mitigation, IBM, neoliberalism, ethnography

Abstract:
This paper explores tourism students’ perceptions of blended learning (BL) and examines the correlations between BL statements, student academic performance (AP), and the level of satisfaction with blended courses (BCs). A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 166 randomly selected tourism students in a comprehensive University in South Africa. For data analysis, IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 (IBM Corporation, 2022) software was used. The results indicate that most tourism students had positive perceptions of BL based on their degrees of AP and satisfaction with the BC. Most tourism students claim that they are not comfortable completing assignments and taking assessments online. The results further reveal that students they are frequently disappointed with the assessment approach of online discussions. The study recommends that the university studied conduct a variety of reform programmes geared at strengthening tourism lecturers’ BL abilities (such as upgrading online assessment methodologies and lecture design). To encourage learning involvement, tourism lecturers could improve students’ perceptions of the BL platform in their instructional design. This will gradually improve tourism students’ low perceptions of BL, as identified in this study.

We agree with Aguinis and Glavas's (2013) conceptualization of embedded versus peripheral corporate social responsibility (CSR). Our concern is whether GE, Intel, and IBM are the best examples of companies with embedded CSR. We propose a more systematic identification of companies with embedded company-wide CSR. A source of exemplars may be aided in drawing upon companies that meet the criteria of “B Corps” or organize as “Benefit Corporations.” Patagonia and New Belgium Brewing Company are provided as examples of “B Corp” companies that utilize core competencies to create company-wide embedded CSR.

The Advanced Materials Institute (AMI) is the materials research arm of the Colorado Advanced Technology Institute (CATI), a state agency created in 1983 by the state General Assembly as an economic development initiative involving academic, industry, and government sectors. AMI represents a unique process in academic research: long-term materials needs of industry members are addressed by university investigators, with federal agencies providing the major source of funding.AMI is a consortium of four research universities (Colorado School of Mines as the lead institution, Colorado State University, and the Universities of Colorado and Denver) and a present industrial membership of nine corporations (AMAX Inc., Adolph Coors Company, Digital Equipment Corporation, Gates Company, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Manville, Martin Marietta, and Telectronics). The Institute is governed by a Board of Directors with representatives from each participating organization. Sustaining memberships, which do not include representation on the Board, are available; memberships of both kinds are open to non-Colorado-based companies. The long-term materials needs of industry members provide AMI's research agenda; many items, once identified, become company-shared interests. Requests for proposals, based on the agenda, are distributed to the affiliated universities for competitive awarding of seed funds. Proposals receive peer review and the Board selects those to be funded.

The role of single wafer Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP) in semiconductor manufacturing has been steadily expanding over the last 2 decades. There are several reasons for the successful adaptation of this technology. These include more critical requirements by advanced semiconductor technologies with respect to thermal exposure and control, as well as tremendous improvements by the RTP equipment community in resolving some fundamental limitations of the tooling, historically restricting wide spread implementation. From rather humble beginnings, RTP technology has now established itself as indispensable to the production of advanced semiconductor products. We review the history and implementation of RTP technology in semiconductor processing technology at International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) from the late 1980s to recent time.

Abstract:
The developments of new technologies, new scientific initiatives and a new globalized market are giving rise to new forms of collaboration, referred to as mass collaboration. This phenomenon is mainly derived from communities and self-organization, and is based on Web 2.0 technologies, services and tools. This new form of collaboration and technologies are giving rise of emergent social software platforms (ESSP’s) that are adopted by firms worldwide. The main aim of this research is to understand how firms are using such new technologies and collaborative efforts to assist knowledge sharing to achieve objectified knowledge. Central to this research is the proposed knowledge sharing cycle model, which has three main stages - internalization, externalization, and objectification. This model is adapted based on the findings of a case study of internal social media strategy of IBM Corporation. The findings indicate that ESSP’s can be used to support knowledge sharing practices and to help convert knowledge into its different forms in enhancing knowledge acquisition.

Abstract:
The aim is to study the effect of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) on cytokine synthesis in male Wistar rats on the background of cyclic starvation. A study of 2 months duration was performed on 60 rats, which were divided into 3 groups (20 rats in each group): rats of the control group (K-group) received standardized balanced laboratory feed for rodents ad libitum. The animals of the 1st experimental group (O-1 group) were fed according to the following scheme: the first day - feed ad libitum, the second and the third day - fasting, the rats of the 2nd experimental group (O-2 group) were given feed according to the same scheme, but with the addition of BCAA at a dosage of 70 mg/kg body weight per day. In the serum of rats, cytokine levels were determined: GM-CSF, INF-γ, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL- 6, TNF-α on the Luminex 200 multiplex analyzer (Luminex Corporation, USA). Statistical processing of the results was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics Version 20.0 application package (“IBM”, USA). As a result of the study, it was established that the consumption of BCAA by rats for 2 months on the background of cyclic starvation causes a decrease in the level of IL-10 and an increase in serum levels of IL-1a and IL-2 due to the activation of signaling pathways that regulate switching of the Th2 immune response to the predominant production of Th1 cytokines.

Abstract:
Introduction. Сurrently, existing methods for determining the chemical composition of the stone in vivo do not have the necessary accuracy. In this regard, the development of methods for high-precision determination of the chemical nature of urinary stones using modern technologies is relevant for modern urology. Materials and methods. 72 patients with urolithiasis who were treated at the Institute of urology and interventional radiology. N.A. Lopatkin – a branch of the Federal state budgetary institution «NMIC of radiology» of the Ministry of health of Russia, along with standard methods of examination, performed the determination of the chemical composition of urinary stones using infrared spectroscopy. Urinary stones were classified according to the predominant mineral component into six main types (calcium-oxalate, uric acid, calcium phosphate, magnesium-ammonium-phosphate, urate–ammonium and mixed), as well as determining the nutrition stereotype for 25 nutrients using an electronic questionnaire. The classification model was built using the tools of a modern set of Data mining methods-IBM SPSS Modeler 18.0 (IBM Corporation, USA). Results. the data set includes the results of the survey of pattern of food and chemical composition analysis of urinary stones on the basis of which a model was produced, allowing high-precision to predict in vivo chemical type of urinary stones. The constructed machine-learning model (C5.0 algorithm) has high predictive accuracy (98.6-100%), specificity (98.2-100%), and sensitivity (100% for the main types of stones and 75.0% for mixed ones). Conclusions. the Developed method for determining the chemical composition of urinary calculus in vivo based on the indicators of the patients nutrition stereotype has a high specificity, sensitivity and accuracy, which allows using this prognostic model in clinical practice.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate dental interns’ knowledge regarding the treatment of traumatic dental injuries. Materials and methods: A total of 110 dental interns participated in the study.Quiz questions from the INJURED TOOTH mobile app were given to the interns of a dental college. They were asked to attempt the quiz at the beginning of their clinical posting in paediatric dentistry. A second quiz with the same questions was conducted after the completion of their clinical posting. The quiz was in English language and consisted of 37 questions based on crown fracture, crown root fracture, luxation injury, root fracture, avulsion, and others. The data available from filled forms were entered in Microsoft Excel. Quantitative analysis was done using IBM SPSS version 22.0 (IBM Corporation, Chicago, US), the p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The knowledge of interns before their clinical postings were insufficient (65.47%). The knowledge was significantly improved after the completion of their clinical posting (76.13%). The mean score of knowledge on crown fracture among the participants before and after the clinical postings was 69.17% and 80.48% respectively. For crown root fracture- 82.17% and 84.33% , for luxation Injuries- 53.83% and 70%, for root fracture - 56.55% and 74.52%, for avulsion 67.71 and 75.21% and for other traumatic injuries - 64.17% and 71.67% Conclusion: The results of the current study demonstrate that dental interns lack the necessary knowledge to treat dental injuries. This highlights the need to introduce subjects relevant to dental trauma into the curriculum and use a variety of teaching strategies, such as problem-based learning, to increase the understanding of dental interns about dental trauma and its management.

Abstract:
It is important to investigate the different impact factors on the establishment of investment portfolio. In order to maximize the profit of a portfolio, this research selects six stocks: Adobe (ADBE), International Business Machines Corp (IBM), Bank of America Corporation (BAC), Citigroup (C), Southwest Airlines Co (LUV) and Alaska Air Group Inc. (ALK) as an empirical case to conduct investment decision. This research compares different results of two models (Markowitz model and Index Model) by analyzing the data of the portfolio such as minimum risk portfolio and maximum Sharpe Ratio portfolio. This research finds that the Markowitz Model is more appropriate to the portfolio establishment, which is presented by its sharper efficient frontier. Under all the conditions the study considered, the Markowitz Model always gets more returns than the Index Model when the risk increases by the same amount. Therefore, this research concludes that the Markowitz Model is more suitable for this portfolio. By analyzing the portfolio in two models, the study has found a better model for this portfolio, thus make more rational investments.
