Abstract:
We present a strategy for incrementally migrating legacy systems to object-oriented platforms. The migration process consists of six sequential phases and encompasses reverse engineering and reengineering activities. The aim of reverse engineering is to decompose programs into components implementing the user interface and components implementing application domain objects. The identification of objects is centred around persistent data stores and exploits object-oriented design metrics. Wrapping is the core of the reengineering activities. It makes new systems able to exploit existing resources, thus allowing an incremental and selective replacement of the identified objects. The migration strategy has been defined and experimented within the project ERCOLE (Encapsulation, Reengineering and Coexistence of Object with Legacy) on legacy systems developed in RPG for the IBM AS/400 environment.

Abstract:
Since 2018 several FAIR Phase 0 beamtimes have been operated at GSI, Darmstadt. Here the new challenging technologies for the upcoming FAIR facility shall be tested while various physics experiments are performed with the existing GSI accelerators. One of these challenges concerns the performance, reliability, and scalability of the experiment data storage. Raw data as collected by event building software of large scale detector data acquisition has to be safely written to a mass storage system like a magnetic tape library. Besides this long term archive, it is often required to process this data as soon as possible on a high performance compute farm. The C library LTSM (“Lightweight Tivoli Storage Management”) has been developed at the GSI IT department based on the IBM TSM software. It provides a file API that allows for writing raw listmode data files via TCP/IP sockets directly to an IBM TSM storage server. Moreover, the LTSM library offers Lustre HSM (“Hierarchical Storage Management”) capabilities for seamlessly archiving and retrieving data stored on Lustre file system and TSM server. In spring 2019 LTSM has been employed at the FAIR Phase 0 beamtimes at GSI. For the HADES experiment LTSM was implemented into the DABC (“Data Acquisition Backbone Core”) event building software. During the 4 weeks of Ag+Ag@1.58 AGeV beam, the HADES event builders have transferred about 400 TB of data via 8 parallel 10 GbE sockets, both to the TSM archive and to the “GSI green cube” HPC farm. For other FAIR Phase 0 experiments using the vintage MBS (“Multi Branch System”) event builders, an LTSM gateway application has been developed to connect the legacy RFIO (“Remote File I/O”) protocol of these DAQ systems with the new storage interface.

Abstract:
NRCVAX is a complete system of programs, covering all aspects of crystal structure analysis from data reduction to the presentation of results. The system, which is written in a `neutral' Fortran 77, presently exists in two forms. The first runs on a VAX computer under VMS, on an 80386 PC under UNIX and under IBM VM/CMS and MVS/TSO. The second is an adaptation which runs on PC-XT, AT, PS/2 and comparable microcomputers under MS-DOS. The two versions differ somewhat in structure, but very little in code, operation or functionality except for the graphics. The many options of the programs can be selected in a highly interactive manner and because of this the system is very flexible. Most options are assigned default values, however, and it is usually safe to run the routines with a minimum of user input using the defaults. The system will accept data from a wide variety of sources and has interface routines for several other systems. Graphics in the VAX/UNIX version are based on the widely available Tektronix 4000 series protocol, while the microcomputer version supports most common display adapters. It is also possible to prepare files for a variety of plotters, dot-matrix printers and laser printers. Source code is distributed and it should not be difficult to adapt the system to any computer with virtual memory and a Fortran 77 compiler.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to conduct a state-of-the-art review of the ongoing research on the Industry 4.0 phenomenon, highlight its key design principles and technology trends, identify its architectural design and offer a strategic roadmap that can serve manufacturers as a simple guide for the process of Industry 4.0 transition. Design/methodology/approach The study performs a systematic and content-centric review of literature based on a six-stage approach to identify key design principles and technology trends of Industry 4.0. The study further benefits from a comprehensive content analysis of the 178 documents identified, both manually and via IBM Watson’s natural language processing for advanced text analysis. Findings Industry 4.0 is an integrative system of value creation that is comprised of 12 design principles and 14 technology trends. Industry 4.0 is no longer a hype and manufacturers need to get on board sooner rather than later. Research limitations/implications The strategic roadmap presented in this study can serve academicians and practitioners as a stepping stone for development of a detailed strategic roadmap for successful transition from traditional manufacturing into the Industry 4.0. However, there is no one-size-fits-all strategy that suits all businesses or industries, meaning that the Industry 4.0 roadmap for each company is idiosyncratic, and should be devised based on company’s core competencies, motivations, capabilities, intent, goals, priorities and budgets. Practical implications The first step for transitioning into the Industry 4.0 is the development of a comprehensive strategic roadmap that carefully identifies and plans every single step a manufacturing company needs to take, as well as the timeline, and the costs and benefits associated with each step. The strategic roadmap presented in this study can offer as a holistic view of common steps that manufacturers need to undertake in their transition toward the Industry 4.0. Originality/value The study is among the first to identify, cluster and describe design principles and technology trends that are building blocks of the Industry 4.0. The strategic roadmap for Industry 4.0 transition presented in this study is expected to assist contemporary manufacturers to understand what implementing the Industry 4.0 really requires of them and what challenges they might face during the transition process.

Jayaraman, Radhakrishnan. "Development of an interactive programming system for IBM 7545 robot." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/90945.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the development of an interactive programming system for the IBM 7545 robot. Various methods of robot programming are discussed, and the reasons for the development of such an interactive programming system are provided. The development of this system was divided into five phases, namely, the development of the pseudo-compiler, development of the "system control" program, integration of ASSEMBLY routines, development of the "motion control" program, and the development of test programs. The approach used for each of these five stages are outlined, and a reference to the use of the system is given. A description of the development of each stage is then given, and the logic associated with all programs are described, and the purpose and operation of all subroutines are also presented. Some assumptions and limitations of the system are explained, and the operational aspects of the system are described. Additional work needed to improve this system is outlined, and the feasibility of using the concept of this system on other robot programming languages on the IBM 7545 robot are also discussed.<br>M.S.

Abstract:
As Local Area Networks becoming increasingly popular, the need to develop protocols for remote login, client/server based peer to peer connections, and event driven windows protocol for IBM PC/PS2 is ever greater. This thesis is primary devoted to the development of a real-time multitasking system for the IBM PC/PS2, and a client/server, event driven Windows protocol similar to X-Window protocol available in computers based on Unix platform. In addition, features such as interprocess communication queues, virtual windows, heap managers which are necessities in a distributed environment are provided also. Program developer may include this multitasking program in the kernel of the PC network operating system such as Novell Netware, and Microsoft Lan Manager. Consequently, a multitasking kernel is developed to provide dynamic tasking spawning, fast task switching, and MS-DOS independent dynamic memory allocation. In addition, a window manager based on this multitasking kernel is developed to manage dialog windows or tasking windows in a distributed environment. Windows may be sent across the network and be displayed remotely.

Abstract:
The proliferation of small and large computer networks and workstations has been the supporting platform for the extensive use and growth of electronic mail. As users became accustomed to the usefulness of electronic mail, they also encountered its limitations with regards to multimedia content and interoperability. An approach that provides a multimedia capability to X.400 that has a built-in interoperability with the Internet is suggested. This approach ensures that existing X.400 and Internet electronic mail facilities can be used to transport and exchange multimedia information by using published interoperability documents.

Full text
Abstract:
Electronic mail is undoubtedly one of the most successful computer applications in the Information Technology industry. International standards, such as the X.400 Message Handling Systems, have been developed to enable the continual expansion of electronic mail services to a wide range of users. The X.400 standards have comprehensively detailed the functional level of message handling systems but, as with all CCITT standards, has stopped short of defining any requirements for the user interface and a phase approach to the integration of X.400 mail systems for distributed networks. This thesis presents a functional model, requirements for a contemporary X.400 Mail system for distributed networks, discussion of mail systems, and an integrated phase approach. The functional model was developed from the X.400 recommendations. The functional model, requirements, and the implemented target system was the result of a comprehensive study and experiments. The X.400 issues focused upon in the functional model, Interim and Target systems include the complexity of specifying message recipient addresses and message options. One of the most promising international standards is the X.SOO Directory Services at this writing. X.SOO provides a global distributed database of information on people and an extensible range of objects. The directory enables users to store their complex X.400addresses and provide a more consistent and reliable method to access this information. The functional model, Interim and Target system also describes the requirements for the integration of X.SOO Directory Services with X.400 Message Handling Systems. This tightly coupled integration is considered to be a powerful enabling technology for electronic mail users. The functional model, requirements and Interim and Target system with the integrated phase approach provides the computing science discipline with a proven and functional methodology for X.400 message systems with X.SOO directory support.

Abstract:
A large MULANA based analysis package, written in FORTRAN, for computing the cross section for proton - nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c momentum from data taken in experiment E609 at FNAL, was implemented on a Z-386, 16 MHz microcomputer workstation featuring an 80 Mbyte hard drive, and a three Gbyte 8-mm Exebyte tape drive, based in the Ball State High Energy Physics Laboratory, in a feasibility study of conducting such analysis on a workstation as a viable alternative and/or adjunct to the Ball State University VAX system. One of 40 large 1600 bpi 9-track data tapes from Experiment 609 provided the data file for the computation. The analysis package was first run on the VAX system. Special problems solved in connection with using the software package included converting the large data file to a suitable form for use at the workstation, transporting that file from the VAX to the workstation, modifying the VAX FORTRAN software package for implementation in the OS/2 workstation operating system environment, and graphical exposition of the results. With the results of conducting the analysis on the VAX system serving as a benchmark, it was determined first that the quantitative analysis results were identical, second, that computing times were similar, and third that the workstation provided unique conveniences. Overall, the results showed that the workstation is a reasonable alternative to using the VAX for High Energy Physics analysis work but also suggest the attractiveness of using similar but faster workstations in the near future.<br>Department of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract:
This chapter first examines a new analytical electromagnetic model that uses galvanically coupled intrabody communication (IBC). Frequencies ranging from hundreds of kHz up to a few MHz are considered under quasi-static assumptions. The model is unified in the sense that it can be applied to any part of the body (i.e., head, torso, limbs, etc.). It also describes influences of tissue property and geometry of the body part. The security and low power consumption of IBC are also apparent in this model. The path loss characterization of IBC implants shows lower values compared to their MICS counterparts. In addition, the chapter also elaborates on the use of human body as antenna. A scenario where an RF current is fed by a tiny toriodal inductor clamped around tissues in the ankle is studied. The frequency range of 1-70 MHz is considered. Theoretical results show that the system has a maximum gain of - 25 dB between 20 to 40 MHz, assuming an isotropic radiation from human body. For improved performance, mitigation techniques for losses are also discussed.

Abstract:
A novel adaptive blanket body cover algorithm (ABBC) has been presented, which has been used for the optimization of conventional control scheme used in shunt active power filter. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been proven by applying this in aircraft system. The superiority of this algorithm over existing genetic algorithm results has been presented by analyzing the THD and compensation time of both the algorithms. The simulation results using the MATLAB model ratify that that algorithm has optimized the control technique, which unmistakably proves the usefulness of the proposed algorithm in 400 Hertz aircraft system.

Abstract:
When Caxton Foster of the University of Massachusetts published his book Computer Architecture in 1970, this term was only just being recognized, reluctantly, by the computing community. This despite an influential paper published in 1964 by a group of IBM engineers on the “Architecture of the IBM System/360.” For instance, ACM’s “Curriculum 68” made no mention of the term in its elaborate description of the entire scope of computing as an academic discipline. Rather, in the late 1960s and well into the ’70s terms such as computer organization, computer structures, logical organization, computer systems organization, or, most blandly, computer design were preferred to describe computers in an abstract sort of way, independent of the physical (hardware) details. Thus a widely referenced paper by Michael Flynn of Stanford University, published in 1974, was titled “Trends and Problems in Computer Organization.” And Maurice Wilkes, even in the third edition of his Time-Sharing Computer Systems (1975) declined to use the term computer architecture. Yet, computer architecture as both an abstract way of looking at, understanding, and designing computers, and as a field of computer science emerged in the first years of the ’70s. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) founded a Technical Committee on Computer Architecture (TCCA) in 1970 to join the ranks of other specialist IEEE TCs. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) followed suit in 1971 by establishing, alongside other special-interest groups, the Special Interest Group on Computer Architecture (SIGARCH). And in 1974, the first of what came to be the annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) was held in Gainesville, Florida. By the end of the decade a series of significant textbooks and articles bearing the term computer architecture(s) had appeared. The reason for naming an aspect of the computer its “architecture” and the reason for naming an academic and research discipline “computer architecture” can be traced back to the mid-1940s and the paradigm-shaping unpublished reports by John von Neumann of the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton, and his collaborators, Arthur Burks and Herman Goldstine.
