Abstract:
The shu’ubiyya movement originates from the early days of Islam. Its main purpose was to challenge the Arabic elite by showing prominent abilities in non-Arabic groups. The movement disappeared in the eleventh century. In the twentieth century a new wave of shu’ubiyya thoughts reappeared called neo-shu’ubiyya. The twist however was that it was used by the Arabs as derogatory term against their rivals. One accused as a shu’ubiyya was Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian revolution. He never proclaimed to be shu’ubiyya yet the Arabic elite still used it against him. This study compares Ayatollah Khomeini’s speech Message to the Pilgrims from the 1980s with the shu’ubiyya member Ibn Garica’s risala from the eleventh century in al-Andalus. The purpose of the study is to question that Ayatollah Khomeini can be seen as a true shu’ubiyya. By examining their messages the study tries to understand how the shu’ubiyya discourse has evolved in fields such as the sacred, traditions, history and the surrounding world. The result shows that part of Ayatollah Khomeini’s argumentation is similar to that of Ibn Garcia, but that his main purpose deviates too much to be called shu’ubiyya. Ibn Garcia tries to turn the Arabic “us against them” upside down and show how superior the non-Arabs are in comparison. He argues that this should allow the non-Arabs to join the Arabic culture. Ayatollah Khomeini has no desire to enter the Arabic discourse instead he asks all Muslims to unite in his new discourse for the greater god of Islam. The claims of the Arabic elite that Iran is the enemy in a “us against them” scenario is not true according to Ayatollah Khomeini. He tries to change the established view of the Iranian as “them”, and instead make all Muslims “us” and the Americans “them” by showing their evil interactions in the middle east. He wants all Muslims to join together by the core of Islam. The trend goes from a more cultural approach to be completely theological.

Miner, Lauren. "The “Man Walks Outside Time Now”: Verbal Representations of Photographic Images in the Poems of Larry Levis." VCU Scholars Compass, 2012. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/402.

Full text
Abstract:
The poet Larry Levis often employed ekphrasis as an elegiac device—particularly with his verbal descriptions of photographic images—to explore human suffering and reconcile feelings of loss. Through the ekphrastic mode, Levis could juxtapose otherwise disparate images, manipulating their temporal and spatial relationships, to achieve what he conceived an authentic portrait of the human experience. The poet, through his verbal descriptions of photographic images, does not try to evade the pain or joy of being human; instead, he confronts his grief directly and, in so doing, transcends that suffering to better understand himself and his own human position. This thesis analyzes the following poems by Larry Levis: “My Only Photograph of Weldon Kees,” “García Lorca: A Photograph of the Granada Cemetery, 1966,” “The Assimilation of the Gypsies,” “Sensationalism,” and “Photograph: Migrant Worker, Parlier, California, 1967.”

Abstract:
This master's thesis in literary creation is composed of two parts. The first one, a literary critic approaches the confrontation between memory and oblivion, in the novelistic work One hundred years of solitude from Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez through various themes. Primarily, we explain how this duality is seen through hereditary memories, loneliness, activity and inertia. In the next chapters, we show how this duality is also connected with death, collective and individual memories which contributes to make history and identity, with transformation of the past by careful scrutiny of the writing and sleep themes, and finally, to the memory awakened by associations coming from a sensual perception of the past, along with the significance given to objects and through the omnipresence of repetition.<br>The second part of this master's thesis untitled Nuits blanches is composed of 6 short stories each casting a women battling her anguish and demons, and who throughout a moment, day or night, loses or thinks she's losing her reason.

Abstract:
Por fim, reuniu-se em um anexo capas, contracapas e/ou informações acerca de 97 produções fonográficas realizadas pela gravadora no período contemplado pelo estudo.<br>The present research recovers the trajectory of the Festa record company, launched in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s by São Paulo-born journalist Irineu Garcia (1920-1984) and the editor and bookseller carioca Carlos Ribeiro (1908-1993), his business partner during the first couple of years. It focuses on the period between 1955 and 1971 when the phonographic label, under Garcia\'s leadership, recorded dozens of literature discs (poetry, prose, theater), popular and classical music. After extensive data recollection from public and private archives as well as from publications released from 1940 to 1980 and many interviews, the present work broadly organizes the history of Festa with the intention of providing for other research works that could take on specific aspects of the object. It also places the narrative in the historical context of the emergence of a cultural industry in the country. Finally, the research includes an Annex with covers, back covers and general information on 97 phonographic productions by the record company in the studied time frame.

Abstract:
The popularity of commercial theatre such as the "melodrama" and the "género chico" presented a barrier to new and experimental theatre at the turn of the twentieth century in Spain. Foremost among the dramatists who attempted to overcome such obstacle were Ramón del Valle Inclán and Federico García Lorca whose early productions were based on commedia dell' arte, puppetry, and generally in popular traditional theatre. The first part of this study (written in Spanish) explores the origins and development of Harlequin in the Italian commedia and traces his presence in the Spanish Renaissance using the work of Cervantes as an example. The historical background of Harlequin is indispensable in understanding Valle Inclán's attitudes towards the commedia. Harlequin is the central figure in his play La Marquesa Rosalinda first performed in 1912. Valle Inclán uses names found in Cervantes's works and through metaphores, sets out to explain the canons of commedia dell' arte that was the heart and pulse of popular theatre in the Renaissance. This thesis examines the height and decline of the commedia in the eighteenth century and includes a study of La Marquesa Rosalinda in terms of its indebitness to the commedia on one hand and Valle Inclán's original development on the other. The second half of this study deals with two works of García Lorca that involve his character Don Cristóbal Polichinela. Don Cristóbal, based on the popular Spanish puppet of the same name, has been inspired by the masked Punchinello of the seventeenth century commedia. A historical and literary appraisal is used to trace the most important characteristics of Punchinello including his transformation from a man into a puppet. Particular emphasis is placed upon the presence of this puppet in Spain, its connection to Harlequin, and the utilization of Punchinello by García Lorca. To conclude this thesis, a comparative study based on the two zanies, Harlequin and Punchinello, enlightens the reasons and motives for the use of puppets and puppets-like characters in the works of Valle Inclán and García Lorca.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of<br>Graduate

Penduka, Dambudzo. "In-vitro anti-vibrio activities of crude extracts of Garcinia Kola seeds." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/405.

Full text
Abstract:
The n-Hexane, dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous crude extracts of Garcinia kola (Heckel) seeds were screened for their anti-Vibrio activities against 50 Vibrio bacteria isolated from wastewater final effluents. The 50 isolates consisted of different Vibrio species namely V. fluvialis (14), V. vulnificus (12), V. parahaemolyticus (12), V. metschnikovii (3) and 9 others unidentified to the specie level. The n-Hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts had activities against 16 (32 percent) of the Vibrio isolates, while the aqueous extracts had activities against 12 (24 percent) all at a screening concentration of 10 mg/ml. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were 0.313-0.625 mg/ml, 0.313-0.625 mg/ml, 0.313-2.5 mg/ml and 10 mg/ml for n-Hexane, dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous extracts respectively. Rate of kill studies were carried out against three different Vibrio species namely V. vulnificus (AL042), V. parahaemolyticus (AL049) and V. fluvialis ( AL040) using the n-Hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts at 1× to 4 × MICs and 2 hour exposure. About 96.3 percent, 82.2 percent, and 78.1 percent (V. fluvialis AL040); 92.6 percent, 87.8 percent and 68.9 percent (V. parahaemolyticus AL049); and 91.6 percent, 64.4 percent, 60 percent (V. vulnificus AL042) of the bacteria were killed by the crude n-Hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts respectively after 2 hour exposure time at 4× MIC. The patterns of activity were bacteriostatic, with the n-Hexane extracts being most effective in activity. We conclude that the Garcinia kola seeds have promise in the treatment and management of infections caused by Vibrio species.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the coexistence of time in Gabriel Garcfa Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as a cause of the supernatural events, the hereditary memory, and the solitude and to examine the effects of this mythical time frame on character development, plot, narrative structure, and theme. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the parchments as creators of mythical time. The second, third, and fourth chapters investigate the effects of this unconventional time. Supernatural events, clairvoyance, and solitude are all examined as effects. The final chapter correlates the writing of the parchments with the writing of the novel and explains the effects of unconventional time on the reader. Thus, this thesis illustrates how the coexistence of time functions of two levels: the level of the parchments and the level of the novel.

Sibanda, Thulani. "Assessment of antibacterial potentials of Garcinia Kola seed extracts and their interactions with antibiotics." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/71.

Full text
Abstract:
The antibacterial potency of the extracts of the seed of Garcinia kola (bitter kola) was investigated in this study against a panel of referenced, environmental and clinical bacterial strains. The killing rates of the active extract as well as their potential for combination antibacterial therapy with standard antibiotics were also elucidated using standard procedures. The aqueous and acetone extracts of the seed were screened for activity against 27 bacterial isolates. The aqueous extract exhibited activity mainly against Gram positive organisms with Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 5 mgml-1 – 20 mgml-1, while the acetone extract showed activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive organisms with MIC values ranging from 10 mgml-1 - 0.156 mgml-1. The acetone extract also showed rapid bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 with a 3.097 Log10 reduction in counts within 4 hours at 0.3125 mgml-1 and a 1.582 Log10 reduction against Proteus vulgaris CSIR 0030 at 5 mgml-1 after 1 hour. In addition, the aqueous, methanol and acetone extracts of the seeds also exhibited activity against four clinical strains of Staphylococcus isolated from wound sepsis specimens. The MIC values for the aqueous extract were 10 mgml-1 for all the isolates while the acetone and methanol extracts had lower values ranging from 0.3125 - 0.625 mgml-1. The acetone extract was strongly bactericidal against Staphylococcus aureus OKOH3 resulting in a 2.70 Log10 reduction in counts at 1.25 mgml-1 within 4 hours of exposure and a complete elimination of the organism after 8 hours. The bactericidal vi activity of the same extract against Staphylococcus aureus OKOH1 was weak, achieving only a 2.92 Log10 reduction in counts at 1.25 mgml-1 (4× MIC) in 24 hours. In the test for interactions between the acetone extract of the seeds and antibiotics, synergistic interactions were observed largely against Gram positive organisms using the FIC indices, (indices of 0.52 - 0.875) with combinations against Gram negatives yielding largely antagonistic interactions (indices of 2.0 to 5.0). Synergy (≥ 1000 times or ≥ 3 Log10 potentiation of the bactericidal activity) against both Gram negative and Gram positive organisms was detected by time kill assays mainly involving the antibiotics tetracycline, chloramphenicol, amoxycillin and penicillin G. Combinations involving erythromycin and ciprofloxacin consistently gave antagonistic or indifferent interactions. We conclude that the acetone extract of Garcinia kola seeds possess strong bactericidal activities against both Gram positive and Gram negative organisms and can be therapeutically useful in the treatment of bacterial infections including the problematic staphylococcal wound infections. In addition, the acetone extract can be a potential source of broad spectrum resistance modifying compounds that can potentially improve the performance of antibiotics in the treatment of drug resistant infections.

Abstract:
Garcinia kola is one of the plants used in folklore remedies for the treatment of microbial infections. Bacterial resistance to commonly used antibiotics has necessitated the search for newer and alternative compounds for the treatment of drug resistant microbial infections. This study focuses on the bioactivity of G. kola seeds on Streptococcus pyogenes (ATCC 49399), Staphylococcus aureus (NCTC 6571), Plesiomonas Shigelloides (ATCC 51903) and Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC 13311), organisms which can cause illnesses from mild to severe with potentially fatal outcomes. The crude ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol, acetone and aqueous extracts were screened by agar-well diffusion method and the activities of the extract were further determined by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) assays. The inhibition zones ranged from 0 - 24 mm, while MIC and MBC of the extract ranged between 0.04 - 1.25 mg/mL and 0.081 - 2.5 mg/mL respectively. Chloroform/ Ethyl Acetate/ Formic acid (CEF) solvent system separated more active compounds followed by Ethyl Acetate/ Methanol/ Water (EMW) and Benzene/ Ethanol/ Ammonium Hydroxide (BEA). The extracts were fractionated by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). Bioautography was used to assess the activity of the possible classes of compounds present in the more active extracts. Column chromatography was used to purify the active compounds from the mixture while Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to identify the phyto components of the fractions. The MIC of the fractions ranged between 0.0006 - 2.5 mg/mL. CEF 3 (F3), CEF 11 (F11) and CEF 12 (F12) revealed the presence of high levels fatty acids Linoleic acid, 1, 2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid and 2, 3-Dihydro-3, 5-dihydroxy-6-methyl, respectively. The results obtained from this study justify the use of this plant in traditional medicine and provide leads which could be further exploited for the development of new and potent antimicrobials.

Abstract:
The solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can induce harmfull effects to the skin by direct action or through the generation of free radicals. These effects can cause various skin lesions such as skin cancer. According to the National Institute of Cancer (INCA, 2012) this type of cancer accounts for 25% of all tumors diagnosed in Brazil. In order to protect the skin against the effects of solar radiation it is recommended the use of sunscreens and topical products added to synthetic sunscreens with properties of absorption and reflection of solar rays. Moreover it is increasing the interest in the use of photochemoprotectors including topical or oral products incorporated with plant extracts or natural substances isolated with antioxidant and/or free radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory activity. Sunscreens are considered OTC products, in some countries, and therefore must have proven effective for in vitro or in vivo standardized. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the photochemical/photoprotective potential of the ethanolic extract of the Garcinia brasiliensis epicarp using in vitro and in vivo methods, respectively. The extract was chemically characterized by measuring the levels of flavonoids, polyphenols and lipids and functionally by determining the antioxidant activity and/or free radical scavenging using different methods in vitro. The cytotoxicity and photostability of the extract and the photoprotective potential of the extract and formulations added extract with different concentrations of the extract were assessed in vitro by measurement of cell viability using cell culture of fibroblasts (L929). The photochemical/protoprotective effect of the formulation added with the extract was tested in vivo by measuring the amounts of endogenous GSH and interleukins IL-1? and TNF-?, besides by measuring myeloperoxidase activity using hairless mice as an animal model. The determined levels of flavonoids and polyphenols of 3.4 mg EQ/g and 69.84 mg GAE/g, respectively, were considered lower than those observed in other plant extracts. The lower levels of flavonoids and polyphenols reflected in lower antioxidant potential of the extract which showed IC50 values of 47.47 and 425.06 mg/mL for antioxidant activity determined by DPPHo and lipid peroxidation methods, respectively. The lipid content was found to be 45%, which suggests that this extract must be stored under controlled conditions to minimize their instability by oxidation of the lipids by oxidative reactions. Cytotoxicity studies showed that the extract at a concentration of 25 mg/mL decreased in 40% the viability of L929 cells. The cytotoxicity of the extract was higher when exposed to UVA than to UVB, suggesting that this extract might be more photoinstable to UVA radiation. In photoprotection tests employing cell culture the extract (100 mg/mL) and the formulation added with 20% of the extract increased the viability of L929 cells exposed to UVB radiation at the same rate to that observed when it was used a commercial sunscreen with an SPF of 15. In vivo results showed that the formulation added with 20% of the extract showed a photoprotective effect when observed the reduction of GSH depletion in treated mice as such as the reduction of myeloperoxidase activity and amounts of cytokines IL-1? and TNF-? in treated skin exposed to radiation UVB in comparison to the non-treated irradiated control.

Abstract:
This research discusses the changing role of women in Spanish society during the nineteenth century through the works of Francisca Navarro and Joaquina Garcia Balmaseda. The thesis shows the break with the traditional image of the "angel del hogar" and the gradual incorporation of the social changes affecting women which were reflected in the female protagonists of the comedies written by such playwrights. By reading theoretical texts of the emerging feminist theory and through analysis of the main female characters, this study examines the changes regarding the established canon and its own evolution within the nineteenth century, from the works of a pioneer like Francisca Navarro in the first third of the century to those of Joaquina Gracia Balmaseda towards the end of it.

Os experimentos foram realizados no outono-inverno, estes devem ser repetidos na primavera-verão, pois espécies neotropicais requerem clima quente e úmido para seu desenvolvimento.<br>Bacuri (Platonia insignis Mart.) and bacupari (Garcinia gardneriana (Planch & Triana) Zappi.) fruit trees belong to the Clusiaceae family and they predominate in the North of Brazil in the Amazonia basin. These species are not domesticated and fruit are obtained mainly by extractive means due to the inexistence of commercial orchards. To propagate bacuri by cutting, young branches were taken from an matrix bacuri tree and cuttings were obtained as: i. hardwood cuttings, ii. herbaceous stem cuttings with two leaves and two buds on the base, and iii. herbaceous stem cuttings with two leaves without buds on the base. Cuttings were treated with indolbutyric acid (IBA) in the following concentrations: 0,0 mg.L-1 (control), 1,000 mg.L-1 , 2,000 mg.L-1 , 3,000 mg.L-1 , and 4,000 mg.L-1 . The hardwood cuttings presented the biggest survival rate (95.83%) in relation to the herbaceous stem cuttings (70%, 67.50%), and in only one of this cutting was observed root development (0.28%). Regarding bacupari, as etiolation has been used to improve rooting in species which are difficult to propagate and as there is no reports regarding the use of etiolate cuttings to propagate this species, the objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of this technique to propagate bacupari and to study the effect of the different doses of IBA. Etiolate cuttings contained on pair of leaves (~12 cm long), and were treated with IBA for 10 seconds (0,0-control, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg.L-1 ). Etiolation resulted in 2.5% rooted cuttings when treated with 500 and 1,000 mg.L-1 IBA. The IBA treatment affected the cuttings surviving the propagate phase possibly by reducing the foliar retention when treated with IBA concentrations superior than 1,000 mg.L-1 . The experiments were set during the autumn-winter season, they should be repeated in the spring-summer season as these species require hot and humid climate to develop.

Abstract:
The interest for ready-to-eat garlic byproducts increased in the last decade. Garlic has phenolic and sulfur compounds, which are responsible for the singular flavor and antioxidant activity. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity (AA) of in natura garlic and its commercialized byproducts, and to correlate the data with phenolics contents. The impact of additives (citric acid, sodium metabisulfite and sodium benzoate) on the AA was also evaluated. Methodology. Methanolic extracts of in natura garlic (ING) and its products, i.e., chopped with salt (CWP), chopped without salt (CS), fried (FG) and mixed garlic - in natura garlic with dehydrated garlic (MG) were evaluated in three different moments of the shelf life. This evaluation based on the measurement of the following parameters: total phenolic compounds and AA. The AA were evaluated using three different methods: DPPH (1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) assay, &#946;-carotene/linoleic acid system and Rancimat® method. Results. The total phenolics content of the extract in relation to the dried residue was higher in the fried product, in the three moments. Regarding the AA, fried garlic showed the best activity in all tests. Throughout the shelf life, the AA decreased with the DPPH assays. In contrast, when the other tests were applied, the AA increased. The products with additives showed better antioxidant activity when compared to those without the additives, although the samples with additives showed lower content of total phenolics. Conclusion. This study strengthened the antioxidant potential of garlic, therefore its consumption should be recommended as part of a healthy diet. Moreover, it was observed that the presence of additives improved the antioxidant effect of the samples.

Abstract:
This study examines Julia Alvarez's best-known works, García Girls and In the Time of the Butterflies, to explore the intertextuality within Dominican-American fiction through the vocabulary and methodology of trauma studies and witnessing. Alvarez's work indicates that traditional academic discourse about witnessing often translates trauma survivors into tourists by legally dispossessing them from the witnesses they could provide as they seek to assign blame and pass judgment on the source of their traumatic experience. This process of exclusion threatens to hinder the ability of Dominican-Americans to work through their shared, traumatic experience with the Trujillo regime. Furthermore, this study contends that as Alvarez privileges fiction and the imagination, instead of historiography, as the appropriate sites for witnessing, she invites other members of the collective to share their witnesses in an effort to populate the structure of the trujillato in order for the collective to better come to terms with their shared trauma.

Abstract:
The primary dramas examined in this study are Vicente Garcia de la Huerta's Raquel and Felix Lope de Vega's La hermosa Ester. This thesis is a textual analysis that seeks both to challenge and complement the existing literary criticism that has focused on construction of the female protagonists and the theme of heroism and culpability. Raquel and La hermosa Ester demonstrate the centrality of their female protagonists in the socio-political macrostructures of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through their ability to influence the functioning of a monarchy and its reigns of power.<br>The predominant theme that is explored is the ascension and descension to and from power as seen through the movement of the female protagonists within or beyond their social spheres. Other recurrent themes that are examined are the sin of pride, the virtue of humility, the vital interdependence between the monarch and nobility, the displacement of culpability and the fundamental role of the male characters.<br>Raquel and Ester, united in their tri-fold social marginalization as Jewish, lower class females, are juxtaposed with the dominance of a deeply rooted patriarchal, aristocratic and pagan society. While La hermosa Ester offers the possibility of ethnic, religious and political coexistence on the throne, Raquel does not achieve this ideal. However, Raquel's commanding presence is able to unveil the chaos that lies beneath the monarchical order.<br>The final objective of this thesis is to embrace the portraiture presented of two women who are catapulted into political realms, polarized in love, servitude, sacrifice and salvation, but who are uniquely bound by heroism, marked in a bleeding lover or blessed in the hymn of a nation.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the topic of identity and, particularly, on the study of lies as a component of identity through the analysis of the main character in the comedy La verdad sospechosa , and the Court represented in the play. The text has been divided into two sections: the text's reality and the stories invented by the main character. This distinction serves to establish the relation between the elements of both parts, as well as their consequent influence in the construction of the character's identity. Conditions such as space, time and, particularly, social surrounding are taken into account in the fabrication of lies. The work shows how lying serves as a tool to create, sometimes fictitious but nevertheless useful, routes that help achieve an immersion in the society, even if it seems to go completely against the social values that, on the other hand, helps attain. Through the deconstruction of the character's lies, this work shows how, gradually, the made-up stories assimilate with the reality of the text until they become one with it. This gradual assimilation goes hand in hand with the character's immersion into the community, which includes the learning of social values and the fulfillment of the community's expectations.

Foehn, Salome. "Les philosophes de l'exil republicain espagnol de 1939." Thesis, Paris 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA030151/document.

Full text
Abstract:
They embraced the anti-fascist cause rising in the 1920s and 1930s in Europe. During the Civil war they stood among the people. The war lasted three years. 1939 saw the victory of General Francisco Franco, supported by Nazi Germany and the Italy of Mussolini. Threatened with death, they had no choice but to escape Spain. Some intellectuals experienced French concentration camps but, for the most part, they found refuge in Latin America, especially in Mexico and Venezuela. In exile, they swore to remain loyal to the Second Republic and to the spirit of the Spanish people. These philosophers belonged to the vainquished, as those everywhere in Europe who, moved by liberal views and humane ideals rised against Fascist barbarity. As a result, their respective works are still widely unknown today – despite restless efforts made to promote their thought to a larger audience for over half a century. In addition to the historical context of crisis during the interwar period, the situation of Spanish philosophy itself is suggestive. Indeed, Spanish philosophy was institutionalised at the beginning of the twentieth century only ; the Schools of Madrid and Barcelona were created. In this sense, Spain caught up on other European countries, Germany especially. These politics of cultural and intellectual renovation are first bestowed upon the generation of philosophers I study, born in the 1900s. When the Spanish war erupts, they had become professionals of international recognition. This shows the actual limits of academic philosophy, incapable of taking or unwilling to accept unorthodox ways of philosophising. The experience of exile itself serves in my opinion as a catalyst : Spanish republican philosophers in exile seek emancipation from academic conventions to philosophise freely ; that is, in Spanish and according to the spirit of the people. No doubt "poetic reason" – the true invention of Spanish republican exile – stems from this ideal of autonomous thinking

Seerattan, Dave Arnold. "The effectiveness of central bank interventions in the foreign exchange market." Thesis, Brunel University, 2012. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7361.

Full text
Abstract:
The global foreign exchange market is the largest financial market with turnover in this market often outstripping the GDP of countries in which they are located. The dynamics in the foreign exchange market, especially price dynamics, have huge implications for financial asset values, financial returns and volatility in the international financial system. It is therefore an important area of study. Exchange rates have often departed significantly from the level implied by fundamentals and exhibit excessive volatility. This reality creates a role for central bank intervention in this market to keep the rate in line with economic fundamentals and the overall policy mix, to stabilize market expectations and to calm disorderly markets. Studies that attempt to measure the effectiveness of intervention in the foreign exchange market in terms of exchange rate trends and volatility have had mixed results. This, in many cases, reflects the unavailability of data and the weaknesses in the empirical frameworks used to measure effectiveness. This thesis utilises the most recent data available and some of the latest methodological advances to measure the effectiveness of central bank intervention in the foreign exchange markets of a variety of countries. It therefore makes a contribution in the area of applied empirical methodologies for the measurement of the dynamics of intervention in the foreign exchange market. It demonstrates that by using high frequency data and more robust and appropriate empirical methodologies central bank intervention in the foreign exchange market can be effective. Moreover, a framework that takes account of the interactions between different central bank policy instruments and price dynamics, the reaction function of the central bank, different states of the market, liquidity in the market and the profitability of the central bank can improve the effectiveness of measuring the impact of central bank policy in the foreign exchange market and provide useful information to policy makers.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyse Argentinean radio broadcasting in the 1950s and especially how this medium issued the so-called radio theatre that the audience received in their everyday life. More precisely it is investigated how radio theatre in the 1950s is remembered today, both by listeners who took part in these broadcasts and how it is remembered in the media. Of special interest is what is articulated as specific about its form and how radio theatre was integrated in and changed everyday life. The audience was not only able to receive radio theatre but was also able to contribute with their own stories. Argentina was one of the pioneering countries in the field of broadcasting, performing its first radio broadcast on August 27, 1920, in the city of Buenos Aires. The Argentinian radio broadcasting was a place of entertainment, information, social and political discussions. One of the main changes in Argentina radio broadcasting happened in 1929 in Buenos Aires. This change was influenced by the first broadcast of radio theatre. In the beginning, radio plays were about stories of “gauchos” (in English cowboys) and folklore, provoking enthusiasm amongst the audience. Argentina radio theatre continues to develop with the introduction of gender-oriented goals which became significant successful. The radio play began to cover the whole family`s interest. Argentina radio theatre caused a significantly change in its audiences’ customs throughout the country. This thesis research has adopted the Media Memory studies theories and is based on Bertolt Brecht’s theory of radio as well as McQuail`s audience theory. Additionally, this study is situated and looked at in a wider framework of previous research conducted by Barfiel, Hilmes &amp; Loviglio, Brandt and Crook. To reach the objective of this study, 17 semi- structured qualitative interviews have been conducted with Argentinians who lived in different cities and listened to radio plays during the 1950s. The results of this research project demonstrate that nowadays, radio theatre audiences from the 50s reflect on and feel nostalgic about the way they used to listen to radio dramas in those days. More specifically, about waiting for the broadcast to start, gathering with the family around the radio set, or talking to friends or relatives about the episode of the day. In addition, radio play audiences reflect positively on the opportunity to meet in person the actors of the radio plays when they were on tour in Argentina. Moreover, this study illustrates that nowadays, Argentinian media also remember radio theatres through publishing articles that refer to them.

Abstract:
Background and aims: Endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation and oxidative stress have been integrally linked to the pathogenesis of both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Aged Garlic Extract (AGE), a potent antioxidant, has been shown in previous studies to attenuate these novel risk factors in a non-diabetic population. Aims: This study tested the hypothesis that AGE may improve endothelial function , oxidative stress, vascular inflammation and insulin resistance in high risk cardiovascular subjects with type 2 diabetes (defined as >30% Cardiovascular risk over 10 yrs). Methods: A double blind, placebo controlled cross-over study was performed in 26 type 2 diabetic patients who received 1200mg of AGE or placebo daily for 4 weeks with a 4 week washout period. Plasma HsCRP was measured as a marker of inflammation. TAOS,GSH/GSSG and LHP were measured as markers of oxidative stress/anti-oxidant defence. Insulin resistance was measured using the HOMA-IR method. Endothelial function was measured using change in the reflective index (RI) post salbutamol using digital photoplethysmography and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio was measured as a biochemical surrogate. Measurements were taken at baseline and after intervention with AGE or placebo. Results: Of the 26 patients studied (Male 17, Female 9), mean age was 61 ± 8 yrs, HbA1c 7.2 ± 1.1%, BP 130/75 ± 15.9/9.8 mmHg, total cholesterol 4.2 ± 0.81 mmol/l, triglyceride 2.11 ± 1.51 mmol/l, HDL-cholesterol 1.04 ± 0.29 mmol/l. The majority of patients were being treated with metformin (59%), aspirin (50%) and statin (96%) therapy. 36% were treated with an ACEI. There were no changes in these therapies throughout the study. Treatment with AGE had no significant effect upon the above metabolic parameters including insulin resistance. Systolic blood pressure pre AGE 130 ± 15mmHg vs post AGE 130± 14mmHg. Total cholesterol pre AGE 4.2 ± 0.9 mmol/l vs post AGE 4.2 ± 0.8 mmol/l. Triglycerides pre AGE 1.4 IQ range 0.7 mmol/l vs post AGE 1.4 IQ range 0.8 mmol/l. HDL cholesterol pre AGE 1.0 ± 0.3 mmol/l vs post AGE 1.0 ± 0.3mmol/l. In addition, no statistically significant difference was found in plasma HsCRP (pre AGE: median 2.0mg/l, IQ range 0.8-2.7 vs post AGE: median 1.83mg/l, IQ range 1.1-3.2, p = 0.89) or urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (pre AGE: 0.55, IQ range 0.4-1.65 vs post AGE: 0.6, IQ range 0.47-1.5, p = 0.43) endothelial function (change in RI pre AGE: 6.5%, IQ range 2.75-11 vs post AGE: 6.5%, IQ range 2.75-13, p = 0.95) with AGE or placebo. Conclusion: In this group of type 2 diabetic patients at high cardiovascular risk, 4 weeks treatment with AGE did not significantly improve endothelial function, vascular inflammation, oxidative stress or insulin resistance.

Bulut, Burcak. "Forecasting The Prices Of Non-ferrous Metals With Garch Models &amp." Thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612393/index.pdf.

Abstract:
In the first part of this thesis the prices of six non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, tin, and zinc) are used to assess the forecasting performance of GARCH models. We find that the forecasting performances of GARCH, EGARCH, and TGARCH models are similar. However, we suggest the use of the GARCH model because it is more parsimonious and has a slightly better statistical performance than the other two. In the second part, the prices of six non-ferrous metals and the price of crude oil are used to examine the dynamic links between oil and metal returns by using the BEKK specification of the multivariate GARCH model and the Granger causality-in-variance tests. Results of our study agree with the previous studies in that the crude oil market volatility leads all non-ferrous metal markets. In order to move as far away from the effects of 9/11, daily data for the period December 12, 2003 &ndash<br>December 15, 2008 is used for the data analysis part of the thesis.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of four research papers. The main focus is on building the multivariate Conditional Correlation (CC-) GARCH models. In particular, emphasis lies on considering an extension of CC-GARCH models that allow for interactions or causality in conditional variances. In the first three chapters, misspecification testing and parameter restrictions in these models are discussed. In the final chapter, a computer package for building major variants of the CC-GARCH models is presented. The first chapter contains a brief introduction to the CC-GARCH models as well as a summary of each research paper. The second chapter proposes a misspecification test for modelling of the conditional variance part of the Extended Constant CC-GARCH model. The test is designed for testing the hypothesis of no interactions in the conditional variances. If the null hypothesis is true, then the conditional variances may be described by the standard CCC-GARCH model. The test is constructed on the Lagrange Multiplier (LM) principle that only requires the estimation of the null model. Although the test is derived under the assumption of the constant conditional correlation, the simulation experiments suggest that the test is also applicable to building CC-GARCH models with changing conditional correlations. There is no asymptotic theory available for these models, which is why simulation of the test statistic in this situation has been necessary. The third chapter provides yet another misspecification test for modelling of the conditional variance component of the CC-GARCH models, whose parameters are often estimated in two steps. The estimator obtained through these two steps is a two-stage quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (2SQMLE). Taking advantage of the asymptotic results for 2SQMLE, the test considered in this chapter is formulated using the LM principle, which requires only the estimation of univariate GARCH models. It is also shown that the test statistic may be computed by using an auxiliary regression. A robust version of the new test is available through another auxiliary regression. All of this amounts to a substantial simplification in computations compared with the test proposed in the second chapter. The simulation experiments show that, under both under both Gaussian and leptokurtic innovations, as well as under changing conditional correlations, the new test has reasonable size and power properties. When modelling the conditional variance, it is necessary to keep the sequence of conditional covariance matrices positive definite almost surely for any time horizon. In the fourth chapter it is demonstrated that under certain conditions some of the parameters of the model can take negative values while the conditional covariance matrix remains positive definite almost surely. It is also shown that even in the simplest first-order vector GARCH representation, the relevant parameter space can contain negative values for some parameters, which is not possible in the univariate model. This finding makes it possible to incorporate negative volatility spillovers into the CC-GARCH framework. Many new GARCH models and misspecification testing procedures have been recently proposed in the literature. When it comes to applying these models or tests, however, there do not seem to exist many options for the users to choose from other than creating their own computer programmes. This is especially the case when one wants to apply a multivariate GARCH model. The last chapter of the thesis offers a remedy to this situation by providing a workable environment for building CC-GARCH models. The package is open source, freely available on the Internet, and designed for use in the open source statistical environment R. With this package can estimate major variants of CC-GARCH models as well as simulate data from the CC-GARCH data generating processes with multivariate normal or Student's t innovations. In addition, the package is equipped with the necessary functions for conducting diagnostic tests such as those discussed in the third chapter of this thesis.<br><p>Diss. Roos, Karin Hester. "Effects of plant extracts and phytoconstituents on the intestinal transport of indinavir / K.H. Roos." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9692.

Abstract:
There is a global rise in the use of herbal products in combination with allopathic medicines, while most patients do not inform their health care providers of the use of these natural products. Both pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic interactions between herbal products and conventional drugs must be avoided for the wellbeing of the patient. Increasing evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that changed drug pharmacokinetics by co-administered herbs may be attributed to modulation of efflux drug transporters such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Garlic (Allium sativum), lemon (Citrus limonum) and beetroot (Beta vulgaris) are widely used by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients, especially following the pronouncement by a former President of South Africa and the Ministers of Health at that time who promoted the use of these botanicals in HIV patients. The aim of this study was to measure the bi-directional in vitro transport of indinavir, a protease inhibitor, in the presence of crude extracts and pure phytoconstituents of A. sativum (L-alliin and diallyl disulphide), C. limonum (hesperidin and eriocitrin) and B. vulgaris (betaine monohydrate and ß-carotene) across excised porcine intestinal tissue in Sweetana-Grass diffusion chambers. In the negative control group, the transport of indinavir alone (200 M) was determined with no modulator added. In the positive control group, the transport of indinavir was determined in the presence of verapamil (100 M), a known P-gp related efflux inhibitor. The control experiments were used to indicate that the effects of the test compounds were caused by their action and not by chance interferences or external factors. Samples collected at pre-determined time intervals were analysed by means of a validated high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and the transport was expressed as the apparent permeability coefficient (Papp) and the transepithelial flux (J) from which the efflux ratio (ER) and the net flux (Jnet) values were calculated. Statistical analysis was used to compare the results of the test compounds with the control groups in order to indicate significant differences. The mean ER value for indinavir in the negative control group was 1.41 ± 0.170 and in the positive control group it was 0.56 ± 0.0426. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) inhibition of indinavir efflux as indicated by reduced ER values was obtained for L-alliin (ER = 0.280 ± 0.030), diallyl disulphide (ER = 0.505 ± 0.034) and ß-carotene (ER = 0.664 ± 0.075). Inhibition of indinavir efflux will lead to increased transport and therefore a potentially higher bioavailability. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) promotion of indinavir efflux as indicated by increased ER values was obtained for C. limonum crude extract (ER = 5.551 ± 0.575) and hesperidin (ER = 3.385 ± 0.477), which potentially may lead to lower bioavalability. B. vulgaris crude extract (p = 0.8452), betaine monohydrate (p = 0.9982), A. sativum crude extract (p = 0.7161) and eriocitrin (p = 0.4431) displayed no statistically significant effect compared to the negative control group on indinavir transport across excised porcine intestinal tissue. The results from this study demonstrate that L-alliin, diallyl disulphide and ß-carotene have an inhibitory effect on indinavir efflux, which may significantly increase indinavir plasma levels after oral administration. C. limonum crude extract and hesperidin promote indinavir efflux, which may significantly reduce indinavir plasma levels. These pharmacokinetic interactions between certain drugs and plant extracts may negatively affect the anti-retroviral treatment of HIV patients, but deliberate and controlled inclusion of L-alliin, diallyl disulphide and ß-carotene in dosage forms may possibly cause more effective delivery of protease inhibitors after oral administration resulting in less frequent dosing intervals.<br>Thesis (MSc (Pharmaceutics))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Abstract:
The appreciation path described by the exchange rate along 2004 and 2005, which reduced the Brazilian product competitiveness and the exportations profitability, showed the anticipation of exchange rate contracts (ACCs) importance as a way to overcome an adverse exchange rate and maintain the attractiveness of the exportation activity. Afterward, we try to increase the set of information of the exporters that look forward an ACC arbitrage operation possibility, analyzing more carefully the issues that determine their results and verifying the exchange rate dynamics role in those gains. Indeed, employing auto regressive conditioned heteroscedasticity (ARCH) econometric models, the results point out a significant and positive relationship between exchange rate volatility and larger ACC arbitrage returns.

Abstract:
This study has applied a geographical perspective with the ambition of evaluating the presence of the Sell in May effect, January effect and monthly anomalies in the Nordic stock markets. In extension the study examines the relationship between corporate size and the returns of calendar anomalies. The study has conducted statistical tests based on Newey-West regressions as well as a Generalized Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity model. The findings suggest that the Sell in May and January are present in the Nordic region and partially abide by theory and results of previous research. The findings suggest that the Sell in May and January effect are independent, however, tendencies when the January effect has a considerable influence on the Sell in May effect are also evident. Additionally, the “April Effect” is an unexpected outlier with positive excess returns that was identified through this study.

Abstract:

Manyarara, Barbara Chiedza. "Lost his voice? interrogating the representations of sexualities in selected novels by Gabriel Garcia Marquez." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18672.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis interrogates García Márquez’s representations of sexualities in the following selected novels: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981); The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975); One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967); The Sad and Incredible Tale of Innocent Erendira and her Heartless Grandmother (1972); and Memories of My Melancholy Whores (2004). It is argued here that García Márquez’s employment of the sexuality motif enables him to delve into many worldwide current concerns such as the irrelevance of some socio-cultural sexual practices; commercial sexual exploitation of children; the different manifestations of prostitution; and female powerlessness under autocratic rule. Earlier literary critics have tended to narrowly interpret García Márquez’s employment of the sexuality motif as just a metaphor for colonial exploitation of the colonised. The study also explores the writer’s artistic role and concludes that García Márquez speaks against commercial sexual exploitation of children as he concurrently speaks on behalf of children so exploited. Similarly, the writer speaks on behalf of prostituted womanhood by showing how prostitutional gains do not seem to cascade down to the prostitutes themselves. García Márquez also invests female sexual passivity as a coping mechanism against a dictator’s limitless power over the life and death of his citizens. However, the writer also constructs female agency that grows from the rejection of an initial victimhood to develop into an extremely flawed and corrupt flesh trade that co-opts and indentures children into sex work with impunity. Thus the study breaks new ground to show that García Márquez’s representations of different sexualities are not merely soft porn masquerading as art. His is a voice added to the worldwide concerns over commercial sexual exploitation of children in the main and also the recovery of a self-reliant female self-hood that was previously inextricably bound to male sexual norms. Quite clearly, García Márquez demonstrates that female prostitution is driven by a lack of social safety nets, a lack of other economically viable options and also a distinct lack of educational opportunities for female economic independence, hence the flawed female agency.<br>English Studies<br>D. "Inheriting man's estate : constructions of masculinity in selected popular narrative." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1913.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the violence of patriarchal culture as it is staged in three twentieth century texts: the Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), the South African novelist Mark Behr's The Smell of Apples (1993) and the American film Night of the Hunter (1954) directed by Charles Laughton. Each of these works focuses on the induction of the boy child into culture and the trauma attendant on this process of accession. The thesis is that if culture is violent then it must follow that damage is done to the developing subject in the process of its construction by the cultural forces that shape masculinity. The theoretical grounding of the analysis is derived from two main sources: Jacques Derrida's account of the violence of culture in Of Grammatology (1976) and the analysis of patriarchy and the Oedipal development of the boy child into manhood found in the work of Freud and Lacan. Derrida is used for his thinking on the inherently violent nature of culture and the way in which cultural discourse is structured through binary dualisms. The three chosen works all critique and dismantle binarist thinking as a move towards imagining a less destructive discursive order. The Oedipal narrative, as a myth which describes and explains the forces shaping the male child in the process of acculturation, exemplifies and illustrates cultural violence: As expounded by Freud and Lacan, the Oedipal myth is one which underpins all three of the chosen works. Derrida, Freud and Lacan have been very usefully mediated by several cultural critics and therefore extensive use is made of commentaries by Kaja Silverman, Frank Krutnik and Madan Sarup. Slavoj Zizek's interpretations of Lacan have also yielded much that is interesting about the nature of the Law of the Father and consequently reference is made to his ideas, principally in Chapter Four. Abstract:
In my thesis, I focus on the evolution of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca's poetry, from his stay in Andalusia to the period he passed in New York. At first, we present avant-garde literary movements of that age. In detail we focus on the Generation 27, whose Lorca was member, and on the poetry the poets cultivated. In Lorca, firstly, we take a look at his life, his personality and then we divide his production into two periods: Andalusia - we take look at his lecture about "cante jondo" and at two books, Poem of cante jondo and Gipsy romances. New York - we approximate to Lorca's stay in New York and the country, and how the environment was reflected in his book of poems Poet in New York. In conclusion we summarize both periods of his production.
