Bruce, Tina. The importance of play. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198747109.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of play demonstrates the challenges of pinning down the umbrella word ‘play’ against a backcloth of terminology that leads to fragmentation of the word. In the educational context an emphasis on the lighter side has developed, such as playfulness, which leaves the more serious side shaded with consequent underemphasis of the self-healing nature of early childhood play. To address these challenges, the focus of the chapter is on the importance of 12 features of play, which bring some solidarity and unity to the study and practice of play without forcing conformity of view. The influence of philosophy, theories, and the sustained impact of Froebelian approaches to play on government documents in the UK provides navigational tools for practitioners, supported by research evidence, giving status and articulating the importance of play.

Pfeifer, Michael J. Collective Violence in the British Atlantic. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036132.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is a brief survey of collective violence across the early modern Anglo-American world. It illustrates how the legal and cultural antecedents of American lynching were carried across the Atlantic by migrants from the British Isles to colonial North America. Collective violence was a familiar aspect of the early modern Anglo-American legal landscape. Group violence in the British Atlantic was usually nonlethal in intention and consequence but it occasionally shaded, particularly in the seventeenth century in the context of political turmoil in England and unsettled social and political conditions in the American colonies, into rebellions and riots that took multiple lives. In the years before and after the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Americans transformed older British notions and practices of crowd action and imbued them with new meanings amid the egalitarian and reformist implications of the Revolution and the early American Republic.

Abstract:
Chronicling the failure of communist regimes to match the consumer desires of its citizens has become shorthand for rereading the events of 1989 as a Whiggish victory of Western ‘soft power’ over its more militaristic, hard-line Soviet rival. However, consumerism did play a key role in communism. The essay explores the meanings of consumerism from the 1930s, when the Soviet Union attempted to accommodate shifts from long-preached ascetism and sacrifice to an increasing yearning to get and spend. In Eastern Europe in the 1960s communist governments used the Great Leap Forward in ‘consumer socialism’ to showcase their political legitimacy. Yet consumerism aroused acquisitive appetites that the state could not satisfy and thus subjected the populace to cycles of arousal and frustration. Seemingly banal problems of provisioning shaded into trenchant political criticisms of communism’s ability to make good on its material promises, a key factor in the collapse of communism.

Wilsey, Brian J. Grasslands of the World. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198744511.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Grasslands are herbaceous dominated areas with very low abundance of trees and shrubs. They are found in areas with intermediate precipitation amounts (250–1000 mm) characterized by occasional droughts and are usually the most extensive in the interior of continents. Grasslands began to form 11–24 million years ago (MYA) when grasses invaded woodlands. Grasses initially all had C3 photosynthesis and were found in shaded conditions. However, grasses with C4 photosynthesis require full sun, and they increased in abundance during this time to achieve between 20–40 percent of the local vegetation. By around 6–8 MYA before present, C4 grasses were widespread on most continents that now have extensive grasslands. Grasslands can be classified by soil type or based on gradients of humidity-aridity and human impact (wild grasslands to improved pastures). African savanna grasslands are important because it is where Homo sapiens (humans) speciated and eventually spread to other continents.

Williams, Justin A. Brithop. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190656805.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Brithop investigates rap music’s politics in the twenty-first-century United Kingdom. In it, the author argues that this music is partly an extension of, or often a counter to, political discourses happening in other realms of British society. These rappers are essentially responding through rap to mainstream Britain’s political discourses. The rappers in this book critique the United Kingdom’s more conservative narratives, and they express their relationship to Britain in the politically turbulent climate of the new century, providing valuable perspectives which can go unnoticed by those skeptical of or ignorant of hip-hop culture. Through themes of nationalism, history, subculture, politics, humor, and identity, this book looks at multiple forms of politics in rap discourses from Wales, Scotland, and England. It covers selected hip-hop scenes from 2002 to 2017, featuring rappers and groups such as The Streets, Goldie Lookin Chain, Akala, Lowkey, Stanley Odd, Loki, Speech Debelle, Lady Sovereign, Shadia Mansour, Shay D, Stormzy, Sleaford Mods, Riz MC, and Lethal Bizzle. It investigates how rappers in the United Kingdom respond to the “postcolonial melancholia” (Gilroy) of post-Empire Britain. In contrast to more visible narratives of national identity in Britain, Brithop tells a different, arguably more important, story.
