Abstract:
The 28th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) took place at the University of Warwick between 23 – 30 July 2017 with 264 international competitors (aged 14 – 18) competing in a series of practical and theoretical exams devised by School of Life Sciences staff and colleagues from the Royal Society of Biology. These exams sought to provide an educational experience for the competing students and provide a robust theoretical and practical challenge to discriminate between abilities. Their secondary aim was to showcase complex biological concepts to further pique candidate’s interest in biological science and encourage them to pursue careers in this area. The structure of practical and theoretical exams was underpinned by these pedagogical aims by applying a contextual narrative throughout the papers. Whilst a few logistical problems occurred, these did not impact the desired educational aim, leading to one of the most successful IBO’s in recent years.

Abstract:
International biology olympiad (IBO) – an international competition of secondary grammer school students in biology – was established in 1989 and first competition was organized in 1990 in Czechoslovakia (Olomouc). In the 1st IBO 22 students and 6 countries participated. Winners of the respective national competitions – their skills in trackling biological problems, and dealing with biological experiments are tested. The competition consists two parts – theoretical test and practical tasks, in 50:50 ratio. Coordination centre of IBO located in Prague, International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB, now AB IBO), national coordinators and since 2008 also steering committee have been responsible for organization of the competition. In the last 30 years number of countries and students participated in the competition evidently increased. In 30th IBO, which was held in Hungary (Szeged) in 2019, 285 students and 72 countries of the world participated. In 2020 IBO was organized in distance/online form only caused by Covid 19 pandemic situation.

Abstract:
The International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) is a relatively new international science olympiad, having begun in 2007. Be-sides the usual written and practical tests, co-operative activities like the International Field Team Investigation (ITFI) and Earth System Project (ESP) are special and exclusive to IESO. Two problems that are unique to Earth Science education are the lack of visibility and the quality of teaching of Earth Science. In recent years, the International Geoscience Education Organisation has brought in sweeping changes in the way IESO testing is done. This paper summarises how IESO has contributed to enhanc-ing the profile and visibility and the quality of earth science education: Through national level entrance test and National Earth Science Olympiad; through publicity regarding the entrance test and related Olympiad activities; through workshops during and between IESO’s; through Mentors and Observers; through the International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) and Earth System Project (ESP); and through hosting IESO. However, efforts have to be made to further increase the impact of IESO on the quali-ty of Earth Science education by several means, including having more countries to participate in IESO.

Abstract:
This study aims to compile and develop an international didactic situtation presented with an approach to the center of an arbitrary triangle in visual exploration in 2D and 3D format using GeoGebra software as a technology for modification and construction of Olympiad questions. The methodology used in this study is an exploratory qualitative which is described from a didactic sequence of Mathematics Olympiad which were held in four online meetings using Google Meet. The results show that this exercise can be used as a resource that will provide a level of learning for students through command and visualization of images that serve a broad view of the international Olympiad situation. International didactic situations can be applied by mathematics teachers both in training for national and international Olympiad and for classroom teaching. In summary, it is noteworthy that the dynamic records of semiotic representations stimulated by the use of GeoGebra software has great potential to encourage the progress of students’ representative geometric thinking, through the development of visualization, perception, and mathematical intuition. It is hoped that this work can serve as a pedagogical and methodological tool by teachers for various competencies.

Abstract:
Several factors influence a country's performance in mathematics competitions. The factors considered in this study are English language proficiency, technological readiness level, and the quality of mathematics and science education. Researchers mined the global competitiveness index for data sets on countries' mathematics and science education quality and technological readiness. In addition, researchers used the Global English proficiency index to determine language proficiency and international mathematics Olympiad scores for Olympiad results. Groupings based on the performance characteristics of the identified sixty countries emerged using the k-means clustering method. The algorithm produced three major clusters separating poor, average, and best-performing countries in the international mathematics Olympiad performance context. Poor-performing countries exhibited a lack of English language proficiency, inadequate mathematics and science education, and a lack of technological readiness. Average-performing countries have high levels of technological preparedness, moderate English language proficiency, and average-quality mathematics and science education. The best-performing countries had high English language proficiency and quality mathematics and science education but not necessarily a high level of technological readiness. Furthermore, the findings revealed that mathematics and science education quality is significantly related to English language proficiency and technological readiness. It is also worth noting that the mathematics Olympiad performance is multi-dimensional, and no single factor can explain it. It is a challenge to consider aligning how students are trained for the mathematics Olympiad and the teaching of mathematics in the classroom.

Abstract:
Even though the International Olympiad in Informatics directly involves a restricted number of pupils from each country, one of its primary goals is stimulating interest in computer science and information technology over the whole younger segment of the world’ s population. In several countries, this aim has to be accomplished without an active intervention of the Ministry of Education on school programs, relying on the efforts of small devoted organizations. In this context, promoting the involvement of a large number of school teachers may be as crucial as difficult to achieve. Following a 9-year experience of teams competitions in Italy, recently shared with other European countries, we argue that teams Olympiad may be an effective tool for widening the participation of high-school students and teachers, synergistically cooperating with existing individual competitions. On the one hand, teams contests foster peer education, encouraging talented students to help training fellows. On the other hand, these competitions can be more appealing both for average students, valuing group membership more than personal accomplishments, and most importantly, teachers: team achievements are more recognizably linked with the overall school or teacher performance than solitary excellences, resulting in increased returns rewarding the involved subjects.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the peculiarities of the Olympiad tasks on computer science: distracting story, placing various important components of the problem in different places of the condition, non-standard mathematical models, non-standard combination of standard approaches, etc. Taking this into account, as well as the rather high complexity of such tasks, there is the problem of working out methodological approaches to teaching to solve such problems. The general schemes of solving the Olympiad tasks on computer science, proposed by various scientists participating in the Olympiad movement, are considered. Based on the own experience, one of them has been selected. One of the areas of dynamic programming, the so-called Knapsack Problems, is considered. There are given various modifications of Knapsack Problem; the ability to solve them is necessary to understand the solution of a more complex task related to dynamic programming. For these tasks are given appropriate mathematical formulas or program code. There are presented all stages of the application of the given scheme to the solving of a specific Olympiad task on computer science, which belongs to the class of Knapsack Problems and proposed by one of the authors at the Open International Student Programming Olympiad “KPI-OPEN 2017” named after S.O. Lebediev and V.M. Glushkov “KPI-OPEN 2017”: the analysis of the condition, the construction of a mathematical model, the construction of a general scheme of solving, refinement, implementation, testing and debugging, sending the program to check. An effective author’s method for solving this task is demonstrated. The program code for the solution is given in C++. It is noted that the important point in preparing for the Olympiads on computer science is the analysis of the tasks after the completion of each competition. Applying the proposed methodological approaches to training pupils or students for the Olympiads on computer science (programming), in our opinion, will increase the effectiveness of such training.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine the availability of elite sport support systems of South African National Sports Federations (NSFs) and their accessibility to athletes from historically disadvantaged areas (HDA). Twenty-one NSFs from Olympic sports participated in the study whereby they responded to a questionnaire on sports policy factors leading to sporting success (SPLISS). Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 27.0, IBM). Informed consent was obtained from all participants before the study commenced. The majority of the NSF’s respondents reported that there was an insufficiency of financial resources, scientific and research support services, and post-sport career support. They also reported overall moderate-to-high availability of governance, organisation and sport policy structure, sport facilities, and opportunities for international competitions/exposure. Financial resources, post-career and scientific support were the most frequently reported insufficiencies, with poorer support in HDAs for all of the nine pillars of support. Additional provision is required to ensure that support systems are inclusive of athletes from HDAs. Future research needs to continue the focus on providing more detailed data on the support systems accessible to elite athletes and coaches.

We identify aspects of computing competition formats as they relate to the purpose of these competitions, both stated and tacit. We consider the major international competitions - the International Olympiad for Informatics, the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, and top coder - and related contests whose format merits consideration. We consider the operational impact and possible outcomes of incorporating several of these aspects into scholastic competitions. We advocate, in particular, that contests be designed so as to provide a rewarding experience and opportunity for achievement for all competitors; not just the winners. Specific contest elements that should be considered are: (1) real-time scoring and feedback, (2) rewards for testing and test case creation, (3) tasks with graduated difficulty, (4) collaborative tasks, (5) practice contests and entry-level contests for novices, and (6) inclusion of spectators.

This study measures and analyzes the performances of the participating nations at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). A country’s success at the IMO is evaluated by the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals won. To measure and compare the performances of the countries, the data envelopment analysis approach is employed and all countries that have won at least one medal have been included in our dataset. As measures for the inputs, two macro-level determinants that can support the effort made by a country are considered: population size and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Our findings indicate a mean level of technical efficiency for the nations analyzed. The results suggest that, on average, the inefficient countries in the sample could achieve improved results by increasing the number of outputs produced while maintaining the same level of effort spent.

In this article, we propose the use of Olympic didactic situations (SDO), such as those used in the National Science Olympiad (ONC), Brazilian Science Olympiad (OBC), among others, as an alternative for teaching kinematics, in the component of Physics, in Basic Education. Reflecting on the need to work with kinematics in a more attractive and challenging way, which arouses the interest of students. Questions from Brazilian Olympics tests were analyzed and those about kinematics were selected. They were resolved, trying to meet the most didactic way to be carried out with the students. We observed that there is a scarcity of works that report the use of SDO in Physics teaching. However, we believe that it is possible to associate Olympic problems with teaching the Physics component and especially kinematics. Thus, we propose the use of this pedagogical approach to make learning more attractive for students, given that these competitions are gaining more and more strength in the educational field, offering great opportunities for students who stand out.

Abstract:
The Olympiad movement of schoolchildren is a ubiquitous driver of the search for talented young people and an international pedagogical phenomenon. The study of national experience in the implementation and preparation for school subject olympiads in China is the goal of our study, the relevance of which is determined by both the mass participation of Russian schoolchildren in intellectual competitions and the dominant role of Chinese teams in international olympiads in natural science disciplines. The approaches used in the study, on whose principles we relied: systemic, activity, cultural. Among the theoretical methods we apply are the study of domestic and English-language scientific literature on the topic, generalization of ideas, categorization. At the empirical level, we have studied the regulatory documents of the Chinese government in the field of education in English, which are publicly available for international scientific cooperation. Many sources were found in the Chinese database of research papers cnki.net. As a result of the study, the following features of the Olympiad movement in China were revealed: strict selection of applicants for national teams in various subjects, a multi-level dropout system for schoolchildren, the presence of training camps for the backbone of teams, from which participants in international competitions are determined (usually 6 people). Government support is implemented through the activities of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology. Despite the success of Olympiads, in recent years, the mass participation in China has decreased, since the Ministry of Education has banned directly accepting the winners of Olympiads to universities without specialized selection. In the Chinese tradition, successful contestants are perceived as “supernormal” teenagers with outstanding abilities, whose number a priori cannot be large. China’s success in economic and technological paths speaks of the effectiveness of educational technologies, which forces domestic teachers to analyze the eastern path of development of giftedness in school.

AbstractThe opening ceremony of the 29th Olympiad in Beijing was celebrated in China as an opportunity for the country to “tell its story to the world.” This article offers a forensic analysis of that story and how it was created under Party fiat with the active collaboration of local and international arts figures. In a scene-by-scene description of the ceremony, the article also reviews the symbiotic relationship of avant-garde cultural activists and the party-state, a relationship that has continuously evolved throughout the Reform era (since 1978). It also discusses contentious historical issues related to the revival of real and imagined national traditions in the era of China's re-emergence on the global stage.

Abstract:
Summary This study examines the confluence of sport and soft power within public diplomacy. It analyses professional baseball player Ichiro Suzuki’s role in the United States as a sporting ambassador from Japan — potentially catalysing goodwill, cultural interest, perceptions of national personality traits and even views of policy issues such as international trade and country relations. In doing so, this research draws from non-state public diplomacy, which considers the transnational impacts of non-traditional communication vehicles such as cultural and sporting exchanges. It measures US public sentiment towards Japan through quantitative analysis of survey responses collected by Pew Research Center in conjunction with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. The success of Japan’s cultural and sporting exports highlights their potential and realised role in binding national ties. Furthermore, Tokyo’s hosting of the Summer Olympiad emphasises the role of sport not only as a vehicle for competition and entertainment but also its utility in global engagement.

Abstract:
We examine the precision with which the cumulative score from a suite of test cases ranks participants in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). Our concern is the ability of these scores to reflect achievement at all levels, as opposed to reflecting chance or arbitrary factors involved in composing the test suite. Test cases are assumed to be drawn from an infinite population of similar cases; variance in standardized rank is estimated by the bootstrap method and used to compute confidence intervals which contain the hypothetical true ranking with 95% probability. We examine the relative contribution of easy (so-called fifty-percent rule) cases and hard cases to the overall ranking. Empirical results based on IOI 2005 suggest that easy and hard cases are both material to the ranking, but the proportion of each is unimportant.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper uses a two part analysis of a new syllabus document developed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) for its Diploma in the area of environmental studies. The environmental analysis Is based on the need for concepts to support sustainability. Key ideas in this model are natural systems of flows of energy, cycles of materials and webs of life and human impact on these natural systems. This analysis suggests that some concepts for sustainability, such as soil and water as basic resources, are not covered adequately and that the identification of the syllabus as a science precludes essential economic and social sciences considerations and the dominance of the methodology of manipulation. Using the Habermasian technical, practical and emancipatory interests as analytical categories, serious difficulties are identified. These include the likely lack of congruence of the syllabus with the advertised philosophy of the Diploma and the fundamental technical interest of control expressed in the syllabus. Taken together, It is probable that in many teachers' hands students may inadvertently learn about exploitation rather than sustainability of the environment. Modifications to the syllabus are proposed.

Abstract:
Literacy and numeracy abilities and critical thinking are very important challenges in the 21st century. It is important to develop stats from the level of elementary education. The results of literacy and numeracy shows that there is a significant problem. Based on the International Student Assessment Program (PISA) 2019 held by OECD, which evaluates the students’ ability in various countries, about 1% of Indonesian students can solve the complex question model mathematically, even in the result of (PISA) released in 2023 about the ability of literacy and numeracy. Indonesia ranked 68 out of 81 countries and if compared with the result in 2018, it was significantly lower. This research aims to describe the ability of literacy and numeracy and also critical thinking of the Olympiad-winning student in solving the questions using STEAM-based test. The research uses qualitative approach, with the method of case study taken from the Junior High School student who wins the mathematics Olympiad. The research instrument was a test that consisted of 5 STEAM based questions. The data collection technique was giving test and it is continued with the interview based on the test result. The result of the research shows that the ability of literacy and numeracy in solving the test refers to the field of science, art, and mathematical subject to communicate, makes the students to be able to change the essay question to the mathematics form. The students can think logically, make valid statements, and construct strategy in solving the test using formal language and symbolic operation. While the test related with the technology, has an error in specifying the steps. In general, the subject’s numeracy literacy skills are good.
