Abstract:
This article gives chronology, nuance, and context to an analysis of how early socialist attitudes to religion changed. It asks why socialists argued with increasing fervour between the early 1830s and 1848 that social reform had to be rooted in spiritual as well as moral values. Two of the largest groups, the Icarians and the Fourierists, moved from a rational deism to Christianity. Both were driven by the need to defend themselves from accusations of immorality levelled against Fourier and the Saint-Simonians because of their rejection of monogamous marriage. The Fourierists, strongly influenced by their dominant female members, transformed Fourier's diety into a Christian God. Cabet, under pressure of ‘moral outrage’ from his critics, did likewise and found that this corresponded to the experiences of the Icarians in their artisan organizations. The religion of the early socialists was a democratic and a pragmatic morality, derived from artisan corporations, and seen as a vital base for fraternal association which was their solution to the ills of society.

Abstract:
Viral myocarditis (VM) is an inflammatory lesion of the myocardium caused by a viral infection. Icariin has anti-viral effects, but its therapeutic effect and mechanism of VM action are still not clear. This study evaluated icariin’s intervention effect on the myocardial cAMP-PKA signaling pathway and explored the possible mechanism of icariin’s effect. The results showed that a high dose of icariin could improve VM rats’ quality of life. Icariin-treated rats had lower mortality, insignificant weight loss, and decreased CK-MB and LDH. Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining to observe the pathological changes of rats. The myocardium of VM rats is severely damaged, and myocardial cells have dissolution, necrosis, degeneration, and inflammatory cell infiltration. The degree of myocardial pathology in rats after icariin treatment is less than that in VM model rats. ELISA detected the serum IL-6 and IL-10 levels, and it was found that the levels of IL-6 and IL-10 in rats after icariin treatment were lower than those in model rats. Prove that icariin plays a protective effect on cardiomyocytes. The positive expression of Fas in the myocardium was measured using the immunohistochemical method. The results demonstrated that the positive expression of Fas in rats was reduced after icariin treatment. The results proved that icariin reduced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Western Blot detected myocardial cAMP and PKA protein content. In contrast with model rats, icariin reduced the cAMP and PKA levels of VM rats, showing that icariin reduces myocardial cell damage.

Abstract:
Osteochondral structure reconstruction by tissue engineering, a challenge in regenerative medicine, requires a scaffold that ensures both articular cartilage and subchondral bone remodeling. Functional hydrogels and scaffolds present a strategy for the controlled delivery of signaling molecules (growth factors and therapeutic drugs) and are considered a promising therapeutic approach. Icariin is a pharmacologically-active small molecule of prenylated flavonol glycoside and the main bioactive flavonoid isolated from Epimedium spp. The in vitro and in vivo testing of icariin showed chondrogenic and ostseoinductive effects, comparable to bone morphogenetic proteins, and suggested its use as an alternative to growth factors, representing a low-cost, promising approach for osteochondral regeneration. This paper reviews the complex structure of the osteochondral tissue, underlining the main aspects of osteochondral defects and those specifically occurring in osteoarthritis. The significance of icariin’s structure and the extraction methods were emphasized. Studies revealing the valuable chondrogenic and osteogenic effects of icariin for osteochondral restoration were also reviewed. The review highlighted th recent state-of-the-art related to hydrogels and scaffolds enriched with icariin developed as biocompatible materials for osteochondral regeneration strategies.

Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a metabolic skeletal disorder characterized by increased fragility and fracture risk as s result of reduced bone mineral density and microstructural destruction and caused a heavy burden on families and society. Current medicines, on the other hand, have some limitations, with side effects and doubts regarding long-term efficacy being highlighted. Studies seeking for natural constituents as potential treatment options therefore come into focus. Icariin is a phytochemical derived from a traditional Chinese medicine, Herba epimedium, that has been used to treat orthopedic disorders in ancient China for thousands of years, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and fracture. Icariin belongs to a category of prenylated flavonoids and has been shown to help reduce osteoporosis bone loss while having relatively low side effects. Icariin's anti-osteoporosis properties manifest in a variety of ways, like promoting osteogenesis, suppressing osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption, regulating migration, proliferation, and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, enhancing angiogenesis, anti-inflammation, and antioxidation. These procedures entail a slew of critical signaling pathways, such as PPARγ, ERα/AKT/β-catenin, and MAPK. Therefore, icariin can be an applicable alternative to improve osteoporosis although the underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully understood. In this study, we searched using the terms “icariin” and “osteoporosis,” and included 64 articles meeting the inclusion criteria and reviewed the research of icariin in anti-osteoporosis over the last 10 years, and discussed new prospects for future study. Therefore, this review may provide some references for further studies.

Abstract:
In this study, we used LS174T cells as a model to investigate the protective effects of icariin and phosphorylated icariin on LPS-induced goblet cell dysfunction. Our results indicated that icariin and phosphorylated icariin increased the cell viability and decreased lactate dehydrogenase activity in LPS-treated LS174T cells. Icariin and phosphorylated icariin attenuated LPS-induced changes in mucin 2 synthesis and secretion. Besides, Icariin and phosphorylated icariin reduced the levels of ROS, MDA, and H2O2 and increased the activity of SOD, GPx, CAT, and T-AOC in LPS-treated LS174T cells. Moreover, the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were reduced in the Icariin and phosphorylated icariin group. Furthermore, Icariin and phosphorylated icariin decreased gene abundance or enzyme activity of Bip, XBP1, GRP78, CHOP, caspase-3, and caspase-4 in LPS-treated LS174T cells. Our data suggest that Icariin and phosphorylated icariin effectively attenuate LPS-induced intestinal goblet cell function damage through regulating oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and mucin expression.

Abstract:
Nauvoo, Illinois was the setting for two important social experiments in the middle of the nineteenth century. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormons, made this city their headquarters of their rapidly expanding church from 1838 until 1846. Only three years after the departure of the Mormons, a group of Frenchmen calling themselves Icarians came to the same spot to realize a system of communal living and brotherhood that lasted in Nauvoo until 1856. While several studies have been devoted to these groups, as yet none have combined a study of the two communities who shared the same space.;This study focuses on the physical communities as envisioned by their leaders and as constructed and inhabited by the members of each group. In "reading" the city each community constructed at Nauvoo, we can understand their unique utopian agendas and how those were realized or compromised in the everyday living out of each groups' individual utopian vision. I offer one perspective, grounded in an interpretation of the cultural landscape of Nauvoo, which examines only a few of the numerous aspects of Mormon and Icarian society, including commitment mechanisms, ideological centers, leadership and authority, gender and conflict. This study seeks to compare the two communities at Nauvoo in ways that will not only elucidate their agendas and experiences, but will help shed light on the nature and experiences of utopian communities in general.

Abstract:
Bone critical defect reconstruction is an important target in current oral surgery research. Contemporary research has been searching for osteogenesis optimization to minimize the necessity of using autogenous bone grafts procedures. Animal models have been the widespread methodology to evaluate the effect of different new substances and biomaterials in bone healing. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of systemic daily flavonoid, icariin, in the repair of calvaria critical size defects induced in Wistar rats. A round critical size defect was performed centrally in 40 rats calvaria using an 8mm trephine under sterile saline solution irrigation. After surgery, half the animals, randomly, received by gavage daily doses of 125mg/Kg-icariin (Test Group) till the euthanasia. The other half (Control Group) received the same volume of saline solution. Five animals of each group were euthanized after 7, 14, 21 and 42 days postoperatively. The rats calvaria were removed, fixed in 10% formalin for 48 hours. Calvarias were X-rayed and after decalcification they underwent histological examination with hematoxylin eosin stain under a light microscope. Defects were analyzed considering area diminishing in X-ray image, bone healing characteristics and osteogenesis in the defect region. Results showed that bone defect area in Test Group was significant smaller in all observational periods. Histological evaluation showed an increased expression in bone trabeculae neoformation in Test Group (p=0,02). Histomorphometry demonstrated significant osteogenesis in Test Group at 7 days (p=0,021), 14 days (p=0,014), 21 days (p=0,021) and 42 days (p=0,009). It was concluded that systemic icariin induced a more expressive bone healing in critical size defects in rats.

Abstract:
Globally, increased length-of-life trends parallel the rise in reported levels of loneliness. Social connectedness is associated with a 50% reduced risk of premature mortality, and research has shown there is a moderately strong association between people who are lonely and people who have an unmet desire to belong. As so, urban planners and designers continually try to understand place relationships within communities to better the health and welfare of future generations. This thesis acknowledges there is a gap of understanding how the built and natural environment play a role in an increased sense of belonging, thus contributing to an alleviation of reported feelings of loneliness and potentially increasing length and quality of life. Utilizing the ‘Blue Zone’ island of Ikaria as a case study, where residents commonly live well beyond 90 and 100 years, this thesis aims to better understand connections between longevity and the physical environment for the longest-lived, cataloguing how these connections influence feelings of belonging. The research consists of a site visit to Ikaria, Greece, where data was collected over the period of five days, employing interview and field observation methods. Drawing from key concepts within environmental psychology and placemaking, the work critically explores the perceptions of Ikarian elders and the public space they regularly inhabit, as well as their role in contributing to sense of place and feelings of belonging. The conclusion offers suggestions on how urban planners might take these findings into consideration, as it is of great importance for planning professionals to better understand individual perceptions of their environment, which may help prevent alienation and increase overall wellbeing.

Epimedii herba is one of the most frequently used herbs in formulas prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis in China. The main active flavonoid glucoside extracted from Epimedium pubescens Maxim. is icariin, which has been reported to enhance bone healing and reduce osteoporosis occurrence. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this present study, we examine the molecular mechanisms of icariin by using primary osteoblast cell cultures obtained from adult mice; and icariin can inhibit osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption by suppressing MAPKs/NF-κB regulated hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis. The osteoblast cells were harvested from 8-month old female Imprinting Control Region (ICR) mice. The effects of icariin stimulation on the proliferation, differentiation and maturation of osteoblasts were examined. The viability of the osteoblasts reached its maximum at 10−8 M icariin. At this concentration, icariin increased the proliferation and matrix mineralization of osteoblasts and promoted nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. Icariin decresed osteoblasts apotosis by inhibiting caspase-3 activation to promote cell life cycle. With icariin treatment, the BMP-2, SMAD4, Cbfa1/Runx2, and OPG gene expressions were up-regulated; the RANKL gene expression was however down-regulated. Concurrent treatment involving the BMP antagonist (Noggin) or the NOS inhibitor (L-NAME) diminished the icariin-induced cell proliferation, ALP activity, NO production, as well as the BMP-2, SMAD4, Cbfa1/Runx2, OPG, RANKL gene expressions. In this study, we demonstrate that in vitro icariin is a bone anabolic agent that may exert its osteogenic effects through the induction of BMP-2 and NO synthesis, subsequently regulating Cbfa1/Runx2, OPG, and RANKL gene expressions. After treatment with icariin, osteoclast co-culture cells were decreased tatrate resistances acid phosphatease (TRAP) activity significantly at the concentration of 10-8 M. Icariin reduced the size of LPS-induced osteoclasts formation, and diminished their TRAP and acid phosphatease (ACP) activity without inhibition of cell viability. Icariin also inhibited LPS-induced bone resorption and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) mRNA and protein expression. The gene expression of OPG was up-regulated, while RANKL was down-regulated. Icariin also inhibited the synthesis of cyclo-oxygenase type-2 (COX-2) and PGE2. In addition, icariin had a dominant repression effect on LPS-induced HIF-1α expression of osteoclasts. On osteoclasts, icariin suppresses LPS-mediated activation of the ERK1/2, I-kappa-B-alpha (IκBα), p38 and JNK; while on the osteoblasts, icariin reduced the LPS-induced activation of ERK1/2 and IκBα, but increased the activation of p38. Icariin inhibited LPS-induced osteoclastogenesis program by suppressing the p38 and JNK pathway. In conclusion, we demonstrated that icariin in vitro has bone formation activity through the induction of BMP-2 and NO synthesis, and inhibitory effects on bone resorption that can prevent inflammatory bone loss by suppressing the p38 and JNK pathway. This study was found that icariin should be a potential compound used for osteoporosis treatment.

With the growth of the population of elder persons, arthritis disease will seriously affect the continued deterioration of the patient''s daily life, and to increase the socio-economic burden. To the elderly, arthritis is the first cause of restrictions on movement, and may cause disability is the main reason. Articular cartilage is composed of water, chondrocytes and extracellular matrix (extracellular matrix, ECM). The components are in the distribution of movable joints on the surface, the protection of the bones, reducing wear and tear, to joint activities and help carry the body weight. When the articular cartilage lesion occurs, the daily life will be hindered; the most common joint disease is osteoarthritis, and it is also known as degenerative arthritis, about 6% people of the world suffering from the disease is the result of aging , genetic or caused by the excessive use. Its main feature is the cartilage ECM collapse. The MMP (matrix metalloproteinase) can break down the proteins in ECM, resulting in the collapse of ECM. Icariin is the major pharmacologically active component of Epimedium sagittatum (Berberidaceae) It has a lot of functions, for example: antioxidant, immune regulation and erectile function, et. Al. One of the components, Icariin can reduce the amount of histamine in the inflammatory response. It also could reduce capillary permeability, and reduce the degree of swelling of feet. So far, Icariin has no obvious adverse reactions. The study was to investigate the effects of icariin on lps-induced osteoarthritis. The animal model is four days of newborn ICR mice, using its knee cartilage to culture chondrocytes. To avoid the change of phenotype on chondrocyte, we use three-dimensional culture model . Further detection of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) within the matrix, we use DMB assay. The OHP assay is used to detect the content of total collagen, and DMB assay to glycosaminoglycan (GAG) within the matrix. Real time PCR was used to investigate gene MMP1, MMP3, MMP13, COX-2 and iNOS on cartilage cells. It might provide another treatment for cartilage damage in the new direction. The results show that icariin in the induction of chondrocyte proliferation, at the 10-9 M concentration is the best. In the same concentration, icariin has a protective effect from the injury of LPS. LPS can induce NO, MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-13 production, but it inhibits the GAG, total collagen synthesis. Icariin can reduce part of NO, MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-13 production. Therefore, in the situations of cartilage cells injury, icariin may have a protective effect. It showed us that icariin might provide another treatment for cartilage damage in the new direction.

Abstract:
AbstractOne essential element of the Barcelona School of Ecological Economics is that it is entirely trans-disciplinary. It is a school nestled in the political activism of its intellectuals that has gestated in dictatorial times, connected with the anti-Franco Catalan movement, in the several underground social movements, and remotely connected to the Spanish Republic and the anarchist experiment in Barcelona. These are events that Joan has so often remembered to all of us, and that can be well documented in the book of one of his doctoral students (Masjuan, La Ecología Humana en el Anarquismo Ibérico. Urbanismo “orgánico”, neomalthusianismo y naturismo social. Icaria Editorial, Barcelona, 2002). For an understanding of Joan Martinez-Alier and the Barcelona school, one needs to know where they are grounded, that is, in the fertile “soil” of Iberian social movements for alternative livelihoods. The argument is that livelihoods are relevant for ecological economics, as the concept of a good life can prove. The latter is an Aristotelian oikonomic goal – remembered by Georgescu-Roegen’s joie de vivre – with its connection to substantive economics as opposed to formal, neoclassical economics. The good life is a degrowth objective too, inspired by conviviality – as formulated by Ivan Illich – and by the pluriversal notion of “buen vivir”, so well-known on the other side of el charco where Joan is just as much known and beloved.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the preparation for and eventual abandonment of Nauvoo, Illinois, by the Mormons following the 1844 death of Joseph Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism). It marks the failed attempts to sell properties by the faith’s new leader, Brigham Young, and the eventual resettlement of the city by a French communal society known as the Icarians. The chapter also traces the Icarian’s demise and the German farmers and vintners who next occupied Nauvoo, transforming it into a rural river village by occupying, repurposing, or removing remaining Mormon structures while remaking the city’s religious character.

Abstract:
The rise of Romantic Socialism in France across the turbulent July Monarchy and Second Republic led French writers to place Mormonism among the radical utopian movements agitating for a response to the Social Question. This chapter analyzes key writings by anarchist and geographer Élisée Reclus, who conjured Mormons as a threat to the state; naturalist Jules Rémy, whose travel narrative Voyage au pays des Mormons provided a seminal eyewitness account; and economist Jean Reybaud, whose Études sur les réformateurs contemporains devoted its longest chapter to Mormons alongside others on Saint-Simonians, Fourierists, and Icarians. Mormon polygamy and collectivist economics were taken seriously as both a successful social model and a dangerous threat to religion, family, and property.

Abstract:
“Hard Labor, Soft Space” is a research-based design investigation on the current surge of collective farms and radical food systems in and around the Hudson Valley. What does it mean to create an infrastructure of care, and systems of resilience within a capitalist landscape of production, extraction, and exploitation?Against the backdrop of land distribution laws such as the Homestead Act (1862) and Alien Land Laws (1913 to present) that have driven the current racial disparity in agricultural land ownership, this project reframes rurality as a site of radical reclamation. This research forms a comparative genealogy of utopian agrarian projects in the U.S. Starting from Pietist settlements (such as Icarians, Shakers and Amana Colonies) to 19th and 20th Century Abolitionist movements in the United States, to the current wave of BIPOC-led radical farms. Through creating a continuous timeline, the project links together more than fifty agrarian based communities across the U.S. From early forms of abolitionist communities such as Nashoba Community (1825-1828) and Timbuctoo (1848–1855), to Black cooperative movements such as Freedom Farms Cooperative (1969-1976) and New Communities Incorporated (1969-1985). The project creates a BIPOC-centered historical narrative for recent land justice projects such as Sweet Freedom Farm, Gentle Time Farm, Soulfire Farm, Choy Division, and Ayni Herb Farm, all located within the state of New York.In 1972, Liselotte and Oswald Mathias Ungers’ published “Communes in the New World: 1740–1972”, a study on utopian commune living.2 “Hard Labor, Soft Space” is part-homage, and part-critique by addressing the erasure of racial history in rural ideation, and proposes future living strategies rooted in racial and social justice. Through archiving, interviewing and counter- mapping, this project highlights alternative agrarian settlements and renounces models of industrial farming that thrive on the extraction of labor, capital, and lands of others.

Abstract:
A close connection between the city and the sea, enriches the urban space. However, many cities tend to bar their coastlines with roads. This research explores the relationship between the traffic routes and the city seafront. Several sections of different seafronts had been studied, and some types were identified. Moreover, two examples had been analysed more deeply (the Aterro do Flamengo Park in Brazil and the Nova Icaria Park in Spain). Both of them reconcile a powerful traffic movement with the enjoyment of the beach. This thesis does NOT defends to implement this seafront-highways, but recognize that, in certain situations, to introduce them has improved the traffic system and, at the same time, has activated the use of the maritime borders public space. But it is necessary to incorporate in the urban design aspects such as permeability, mix of uses, tensions, separation of flows, elements of reference and density.
