Abstract:
The celebratory nature that some events generate creates a liminoid space through which participants can obtain social benefits. This article examines Chalip's five liminality strategies in the context of supplemental events, which are events run in conjunction with major sporting events. The discussion is framed within the context of two supplemental events aligned to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, the Fan Zone, and the Trophy Tour. Using 152 short interviews with attendees, the study found some evidence of the presence of Chalip's strategies at these events and that these lead to social benefits. However, the level of liminality and communitas created was minimal, due to the open access nature of the event spaces and also because "live" World Cup matches were not broadcasted akin to typical "live sites." The study contributes to understanding in relation to liminality strategies in the context of supplemental events.

Abstract:
Abstract We build an equilibrium royalty stacking model that links the number of standard-essential patent (SEP) holders with the equilibrium quantity, price and cumulative royalty. We show that all observable implications of the theory are inconsistent with the data from the world mobile wireless industry. In this industry, the number of SEP holders grew from 2 in 1994 to 130 in 2013. Royalty stacking theory predicts falling or stagnant output, rising selling prices, and rising or stagnant quality-adjusted prices. By contrast, between 1994 and 2013 worldwide yearly device sales grew 62-fold, at an average rate of 20.1% per year, and both selling and quality-adjusted prices fell fast over time. Controlling for technological generation, the real average selling price of a device fell between -11.4% and -24.8% per year. Similarly, under conservative parametrizations, royalty stacking theory predicts royalty yields, which are more than an order of magnitude larger than the observed average cumulative royalty yield charged by SEP holders in practice, which hovers between 3% and 3.5%. A theory based on Lerner and Tirole’s (2015, J. Political Econ., 123(3), 547–586) within-functionality competition yields observable implications consistent with the observed facts. If all the technologies protected by SEPs have meaningful substitutes that cap the royalty that any SEP holder can charge, then the cumulative royalty is independent of demand parameters in the downstream market and can be as low as the observed average cumulative royalty yield. Moreover, if the product market is competitive and technological progress is fast, then prices follow costs, quality-adjusted prices protractedly fall, and sales grow fast.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to focus on the development and upgrading of the Hagley Park cricket oval in Christchurch for the 2015 Cricket World Cup and how this hallmark event was used a catalyst to rebrand the city following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the findings from research conducted between 2012 and 2016. Data for the analysis were collected from mainstream media, sport organisations websites and government archives. In addition, a two-round series of semi-structured interviews with relevant stakeholders was undertaken in the aftermath of the Cricket World Cup. Findings In the case of Christchurch, the earthquakes and the destruction of much of the downtown provided a recovery opportunity, with the 2015 Cricket World Cup used to expedite the development of a new sporting venue in the city centre and rebrand the city to international tourists and sport enthusiasts. Research limitations/implications The Hagley Park cricket oval case study provides evidence on the rhetoric of urban competitiveness and the use of hallmark sporting events to reframe urban development in post-disaster contexts. Originality/value This research provides further evidence on the logics of disaster capitalism and how cities embark on costly redevelopment projects for sports and events whilst overlooking exacerbating vulnerabilities among the local community.

Abstract:
This research study investigated intangible assets generated by sport event hosting, specifically in relation to those industries that could influence the planning and leveraging of this alternate value source at Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2015 host destinations. The industries under scrutiny were sport, public sector and tourism, and the sampled host destinations were Cardiff, Exeter, Brighton and Gloucester. The objectives of this thesis were threefold: (1) to respond to the lack of knowledge around the collaborative roles of sport, public sector and tourism organisations in sport event planning, (2) to pioneer representational capital, a concept that looks to examine the input of those pinpointed planners in the identification and valuation of intangible opportunities generated by hosting RWC 2015 fixtures, (3) to probe planning discourse for examples of leveraging representational capital. Expert opinions were captured from executive-level RWC 2015 planners, and supported by secondary data analysis. The findings showed that public sector and sport organisation planning representatives were key RWC 2015 planners and that tourism planners, at a destination level, were not key collaborators in central planning forums, but collaborated extensively with national and international tourism organisations on RWC 2015 planning matters. Additionally, the analysis uncovered that representational capital was predominantly made-up of three key intangible asset areas: destination image, exposure and reputation. Indeed, these intangible areas were recognised and valued by all three industries, but the data analysis indicated that the levels of collaboration between the sampled planning industries did not translate into collectively leveraging representational capital. Moreover, one of the main breakthroughs from this investigation was identifying the interconnected nature of a range of intangible assets in generating greater value, i.e. increasing representational capital available to planners. Representational capital was found to have a strong connection throughout the leveraging process, in terms of the maximisation strategy and planned outputs in RWC 2015 planning, further supporting the study project objective of investigating the intangible in relation to sport events.

Abstract:
For more than a century, the poor population of the city of Porto Alegre have suffered with the urban removals. There is a continuity in the practice of removal policies in certain locations in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, and recently thousands of people have been removed because of works directly related to the 2014 World Cup mega-event in the city. The way in which this process took place has revealed that the removals and the consequent urban transformation do not occur in a peaceful way. The city is an arena of dispute between several social groups in which different discourses about their construction are confronted, taking shapeboth in a discursive and material dimension. This study aims at the transformations that motivated the expropriation of space from the urban interventions and the consequent removals of communities, favelas and villages for the construction or remodeling of urban architectures, as well as the displacement of the people to other areas of the city. For this purpose, three territories that have been removed are analyzed: Ilhota, Dique and Tronco. Ilhota is a community that suffered the largest removal of the city in the late 1970s, due to a process of gentrification of the city center Dique and Tronco are communities that suffered removals after the announcement that the mega-event World Cup would be held in the city. With the idea of constructing cartographies of the removals, three instruments were used to record, analyze and build knowledge in order to detect points of conflict and injustice in these territories: (i) a documentary about the violence suffered and the resistance to removal for the permanence of their homes; (ii) maps showing the peripheralization of the people who suffered the removals; (iii) a survey of the removal mechanisms employed by the State to pressure families to leave their homes. Removal cartography seeks to treat them as one of the axes of a project of deep transformation in urban dynamics, involving on the one hand new processes of elitization and commercialization of the city, and on the other, new patterns of relationship between the State and economic and social agents, marked by the denial of the democratic public spheres of decision-making and by authoritarian interventions.

Abstract:
The last century shows that sport and broadcasting has evolved around men and left the women, in the dark. Even though there has been a significant movement for women in sport, the men steal the spotlight and has the sports arena to themselves. This study, a quantitative content analysis, contains published news articles from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen during the women's FIFA World Cup 2015 and the men's FIFA World Cup 2018. The objective is to examine the quantity of coverage and the representation of the Swedish women and men's national football team. This study indicates that the main coverage of the women's national team was dismally low compared to the men's national team. The study also reveals a tendency that journalists of the news articles are about four times more men than women that covers both tournaments.

Evans, Iain. "ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 : sports broadcasting in South Africa, national interest and money." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/4453.

Abstract:
This research is an investigation into the political economy of sports broadcasting within a South African context, using the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 (CWC2003) as a case study. The staging of this global event, hosted by South Africa, is the focal point of many the world's largest sports media institutions and the production, packaging and distribution of the event is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. There are also many economic spin-offs generated by a media event of this magnitude in the form of ad spend and media merchandising which add to the monetary value of the Cricket World Cup as a mediated commodity. This dissertation looks at the political economy of the media in relation to the rapid globalization of the economics of sport and the role that technology has played in this development. In particular, the research will focus on the South African television broadcasting environment while at the same time acknowledging the trends and impact that global forces in sports economics have had on broadcasting. The research pays particular attention to the question of national identity and the role that sport broadcasting on television plays in building a spirit of national unity. This unifying tool has raised debates by the government regarding access to sporting events that are deemed to be of 'national interest'. In light of this, the dissertation looks at the role that public service broadcasting now plays in broadcasting sport to the greater population in South Africa. Finally, the dissertation looks at the case study of the cricket World Cup 2003 held in South Africa against which to apply the theories of political economy, globalization, and national interest. The dissertation looks at the audiences and spectators at the center of a dynamic relationship between Sports bodies, commercial agents, broadcasters and advertisers.

Abstract:
Abstract Sulfur oxides, abbreviated to SOx, refer to both sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfur trioxide (SO3) that are gaseous pollutants emitted by the combustion of low-grade fuels, including heavy oils, sour gases and coal. Current Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technologies mainly use limestone or CaO (quicklime) as sulfur scavenger. They consume water and produce significant stocks of calcium sulfate, a non-regenerable solid that has limited market outlets and is sometimes considered as waste. To tackle this problem, a multi-partner team has launched a two-phase program in order to develop a new, regenerative FGD concept. This partnership includes a GE Power team (Belfort, France), three research laboratories (IS2M-MPC, LGRE from University of Haute Alsace, Mulhouse and ICB-UTBM-LERMPS, Belfort), a ceramic material testing center (ICAR, Moncel les Luneville, France) and a consultancy organization skilled in materials (Zephir Alsace, Mulhouse). The main objective was to design a regenerable adsorbent that would not release any solid waste but would allow instead the recovery of sulfur in the form of H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) which is a valuable chemical commodity. A first subprogram, executed from September 2012 through March 2015 and called “DeSOx New Gen”, enabled the different partners to identify and test at lab scale a regenerable and durable adsorbent. This adsorbent, used initially in powder form, involved an organized mesoporous silica (SiO2), which was used as a support and was impregnated with copper oxide (CuO) likely to undergo reversible sulfation. Such binary system proved capable of achieving large numbers of successive adsorption/regeneration cycles (more than fifteen attained in the lab) without undergoing substantial activity loss. A second subprogram, initiated in September 2017 and called “AdSOx”, aimed to obtain and test a bead-shaped form of the previously developed adsorbent in view of industrial applications. This product in bead-shaped adsorbent was then evaluated in 2019 in a pilot combustion rig, the flue gases of which were representative of a real industrial combustion installation in terms of SOx, NOx, CO, CO2, H2O and PM (particulate matter). In these rig tests, the performances of the adsorbent for the capture of SOx, including its capability to be regenerated for multi-cyclic use, have been assessed in fluidized bed and most recently in fixed bed conditions. This paper outlines the most significant steps and outcomes of this collaborative two-phase development program. It also illustrates the interesting capabilities of mesoporous materials for the design of highly active sorption and catalytic systems.
