Abstract:
Abstract. The Weihe Basin, enclosed by the Chinese Loess Plateau to the north and the Qinling Mountains to the south, is an outstanding, world-class continental site for obtaining high-resolution multi-proxy records that reflect environmental changes spanning most of the Cenozoic. Previous geophysical and sedimentary studies indicate that the basin hosts 6000–8000 m thick fluvial–lacustrine sedimentary successions spanning the Eocene to Holocene. This sedimentary record provides an excellent and unique archive to decipher long-term tectonic–climate interactions related to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, the onset/evolution of the Asian monsoon, and the development of the biogeography of East Asia. Owing to its location at the interface of the opposing westerly and Asian monsoon circulation systems, the Weihe Basin also holds enormous promise for providing a record of changes in these circulation systems in response to very different boundary conditions since the Eocene. To develop an international scientific drilling programme in the Weihe Basin, the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, organized a dedicated workshop with 55 participants from eight countries. The workshop was held in Xi'an, China, from 15 to 18 October 2019. Workshop participants conceived the key scientific objectives of the envisaged Weihe Basin Drilling Project (WBDP) and discussed technical and logistical aspects as well as the scope of the scientific collaboration in preparation for a full drilling proposal for submission to the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). Workshop participants mutually agreed to design a two-phase scientific drilling programme that will in a first phase target the upper 3000 m and in a second phase the entire up to 7500 m thick sedimentary infill of the basin. For the purpose of the 7500 m deep borehole, the world's only drill rig for ultra-deep scientific drilling on land, Crust 1, which previously recovered the entire continental Cretaceous sediments in the Songliao Basin, will be deployed in the WBDP.

Abstract:
AbstractBased on ethical, theoretical and practical concerns, community-based conservation projects have developed over the past 2 decades as alternatives to traditional protected areas. Recent criticisms of such programmes by biologists and social scientists involve a debate on who should manage our natural resources. Such criticisms have focused on large integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs) and have largely ignored the successes of small community conservation projects. Practitioners of ICDPs have also been disappointed with the results of their projects and are seeking answers from ICDP failures. Two important differences separate community conservation projects and ICDPs and have led to the success of the smaller projects: (1) community conservation projects see local rural people as the solution to habitat degradation whereas ICDPs see them as the problem, (2) the scale of the smaller projects is at the community level but can use the same methods regionally, whereas ICDPs are large in scale and cost. We discuss, from a practitioner’s viewpoint, the strengths that contribute to the successes of community conservation projects, including actually functioning at the community level, creating an empowered community group to carry on the social sustainability of the project, continuous basic level funding, and the importance of monitoring.

Abstract:
IntroductionMillions of children in India still suffer from poor health and under-nutrition, despite substantial improvement over decades of public health programmes. The Anganwadi centres under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) provide a range of health and nutrition services to pregnant women, children <6 years and their mothers. However, major gaps exist in ICDS service delivery. The government is currently strengthening ICDS through an mHealth intervention called Common Application Software (ICDS-CAS) installed on smart phones, with accompanying multilevel data dashboards. This system is intended to be a job aid for frontline workers, supervisors and managers, aims to ensure better service delivery and supervision, and enable real-time monitoring and data-based decision-making. However, there is little to no evidence on the effectiveness of such large-scale mHealth interventions integrated with public health programmes in resource-constrained settings on the service delivery and subsequent health and nutrition outcomes. Methods and analysisThis study uses a village-matched controlled design with repeated cross-sectional surveys to evaluate whether ICDS-CAS can enable more timely and appropriate services to pregnant women, children <12 months and their mothers, compared with the standard ICDS programme. The study will recruit approximately 1500 Anganwadi workers and 6000+ mother-child dyads from 400+ matched-pair villages in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. The primary outcomes are the proportion of beneficiaries receiving (a) adequate number of home visits and (b) appropriate level of counselling by the Anganwadi workers. Secondary outcomes are related to improvements in other ICDS services, and knowledge and practices of the Anganwadi workers and beneficiaries.Ethics and disseminationEthical oversight is provided by the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects at the University of California at Berkeley, and the Suraksha Independent Ethics Committee in India. The results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and analysis data will be made public.Trial registration numberISRCTN83902145

Abstract:
This paper explores the impact of self-reflective processes of staff at Charles Sturt University (CSU) while undertaking an online Indigenous Cultural Competency Program (ICCP). The ICCP was designed for completion by all university staff to enhance their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories and contemporary realities. Staff were requirement to complete and submit answers to an online quiz, and a written reflection on their learning. This paper reflects on the responses of 64 volunteers and indicates large positive shifts are self-reported knowledge and understanding. The reflective texts of staff provide a rich source of information on the ‘journey within’. In-depth thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) identified three key themes: evaluation, the mapped learning journey and the personal learning journey. The participant feedback, not only pointed to the cognitive, attitudinal and emotional impact of the content and pedagogical approach of the programme, but also identified barriers and issues for programmes aimed at complex change in a contested space. Our programme assessment relied on self-reported individual perception that surfaced hidden assumptions about Indigenous cultural competency (Kumas-Tan¸ Beagan, Loppie, MacLeod, & Frank, 2007). We acknowledge in the longer term a range of comprehensive outcome measures are needed.

Hindgren, Lisbeth (2008). ICDP, International Child Development Programme Ett verktyg för specialpedagogens proffessionella rollragande? ICDP, International Child Development Programme A tool for the special educational needs teacher´s professional role? Examensarbete, Skolutveckling och ledarskap, Specialpedagogik, Lärarutbildningen, Malmö högskola. Syfte: Vad styr rolltagandet utifrån olika rollteoretiska perspektiv? Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD<br>Although TB is a curable communicable disease, poor adherence to TB treatment is a major barrier to TB control in South Africa as it increases the risks of morbidity, mortality and drug resistance at individual and community level. As a result, multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) has become a serious public health issue. Underpinning this study was the assumption that a client-centred approach to treatment of MDR-TB clients, with a hospital programme which adopts an integrated multidisciplinary approach that is client-centred and is not purely biomedically driven, would improve treatment outcomes of MDR-TB clients.

Abstract Since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) there has been increased interest in the nature and role of both advocacy for policy and programme change and women’s participation and empowerment in the population field. This resulted from issues of both process and content. In relation to the advocacy process, the major impact of the human rights and women’s health lobbies at ICPD itself provided a powerful example of how effective a well-strategized advocacy programme can be. Their work played a key role in shifting the discourse and final content of the ICPD Programme of Action.

The API runs a certification programme for in-service inspectors. This is a system of certification of individual inspectors (not companies) involved in the in-service inspection of pressure vessels, piping and storage tanks. It is used extensively in the USA (it is a legal requirement in many states for inspectors to be certified) and in other countries that use API/ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) codes. In countries where it is not a legal requirement, it is becoming increasingly recognized as a ‘benchmark’ standard for certification of inspectors. These are termed the Individual Certification Programmes (ICPs).

International Compliance Assurance Programme (ICAP) of OECD, a brand-new application, is the international reflection of the tax compliance expectations rising over cooperative compliance. ICAP is an application in which the tax risks of MNE groups are evaluated by bringing together the tax administrations of more than one country in which they operate and the relevant MNE group, and it has the capacity to create positive outputs at the point of ensuring voluntary tax compliance based on the establishment of tax certainty and consistency. In this study, the charactetistics, composition, and function of ICAP is revealed with the concept of cooperative compliance by comparing similar concepts with ICAP. Based on these elements, the chapter discusses Turkey's future participation in the programme.

Abstract:
This chapter is developed with the intention of discussing the use of implantable defibrillator cardioverters (ICDs) in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). LVADs have become the standard treatment for patients with advanced heart failure who require prolonged mechanical circulatory support as a bridge to transplantation or as destination therapy. Patients with advanced heart failure have a major risk of sudden death due to ventricular dysrhythmias (VD) so an ICD could be indicated, but it remains unclear within the LVAD population due to several factors including sustained VD good tolerance and inappropriate therapies (due to supraventricular tachycardias or electromechanical interferences) as well as the risk of infections with complex antibiotic therapy or device replacements. Previous VD before LVAD placement, concomitant atrial fibrillation, type of LVAD device, and chronic ischemic heart disease can predict future episodes of VD. The evidence that supports ICD use in patients with LVAD is very limited, and current guidelines are based primarily on the consensus of experts and observational studies. Nowadays, an ICD implant is only recommended for LVAD patients who develop postoperative VD associated with hemodynamic collapse, and it should be programmed in a very conservative mode (higher rate and larger intervals to detection) to avoid undesirable electric shocks.

This chapter focusses on early child care and school education. Two essays discuss India's schooling system, drawing on the seminal Public Report on Basic Education (known as PROBE report) as well as on a re‐study of the PROBE villages ten years later, in 2006. This re‐study found evidence of rapid improvement in schooling facilities as well as in school participation, especially among underprivileged groups. However, there was no improvement in classroom activity: in both surveys, half of the sample schools were idle at the time of the investigators’ visit. The other essays in this chapter discuss the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), India's only national programme for children under the six, in a rights perspective. In the mid‐2000s, far‐reaching Supreme Court orders gave a new lease of life to ICDS. Further improvement in this programme, it is argued, could make a big difference to the well‐being and future of Indian children.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the effect of over /under protection of impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system that applied on Dupplex Stainless Steel (DSS) buried in soil environment. Stepped constant load testing (SCLT) at different ICCP potentials and temperature has been carried out in 30 % (saturated) NaCl solution in a programmed slow strain rate test rig. In addition, constant potential testing has been carried out in two different Sabkha muds from Oman. The SCLT found that girth welded material specimens with a machined V-notch similar to a weld undercut withstand a load equal to the actual yield strength (AYS) of the material at a CP potential of down to -1250 mV(Cu/CuSO4) at both 40 and 90 C in a 30 % NaCl solution. Further, from the hydrogen analysis, it is found that 62-70 ppm of hydrogen has entered the tested material after 20 days of exposure at the lowest CP potential of -1250 mV(Cu/CuSO4) at 40C. From the polarization testing it is found that pitting will not occur at room temperature under normal circumstances, but may take place at 95 C. the corrosion potential is however lower than the pitting potential indicating that pitting corrosion will not initiate. Since the potential different between them is approximately 200 mV(Cu/CuSO4) and the tests are short time tests, the recommended polarization of the pipe to an ICCP potential is less than -629 mV(Cu/CuSO4) to avoid local corrosion. Finally, the constant potential polarization testing shows that when the mud dries up, the polrisation current decreases to near zero. Hence, in order to ensure that the ICCP system functions and will protect the pipeline from corrosion, the backfill mud surrounding the pipe line and the ICCP anodes must be wet.

In ASME 2011 14th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2011-59399.

Abstract:
This paper describes the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority’s experience in regulatory cooperation projects in Russia and elsewhere, with special focus on legacy issues. These legacies include many different kinds of objects and activities, including: obsolete large waste sources, such as those used in radioisotope thermoelectric generators; remediation of former military sites used for storage of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste; and wastes from uranium mining and ore processing. The objectives of these bi-lateral cooperation programmes are to promote effective and efficient regulatory supervision, taking into account international recommendations and good practice in other countries. Individual projects organised within the programme address specific challenges which require practical local interpretation of ICRP recommendations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Basic Safety Standards and other IAEA requirements and guidance documents. In some cases, new regulatory documentation has been required, as well as new regulatory procedures. In the long term, the program is intended to lead to an enhanced and enduring safety culture. Positive experience in Russia encouraged the Norwegian government to extend the regulatory collaboration programme to countries in central Asia, using experience gained with Russian regulatory authorities as well as support from Russian Technical Support Organisations. The programmes are effectively evolving into a regional regulatory support group. Noting this experience, the paper includes suggestions for how international cooperation could be effective in addressing common radiation safety objectives while addressing local differences in technical, geographical, economic and cultural matters in each country. The continuing results from the cooperation will be used to provide input to the International Forum for Regulatory Supervision of Legacy Sites (RSLS) which was recently set up by the IAEA. The RSLS objectives mirror those of the bilateral activities described above and an outline is provided of the preliminary RSLS Work Plan.

Abstract:
Abstract The prediction of the source term of actinides, fission and activation products is of major importance in numerous nuclear fields. An experimental programme of radiochemistry (called ARIANE) was carried out on MOX and UO2 fuels irradiated in PWR and BWR conditions, reaching burnups of 35 up to 55 GWd/tM. Besides the providing of a large set of experimental data on the irradiated fuel inventory, a second objective of the programme was to confer on these experimental results reliable and minimised uncertainties. About 50 isotopes of actinides and fission products were selected. Their contents were measured using techniques as TIMS, ICP-MS, alpha, beta and gamma spectrometry. The measurement results were crosschecked by three highly qualified laboratories and recommended values were provided after extended analysis and confrontation of the results. For most of the measured isotopes, the target uncertainties were reached and even reduced, providing a unique database for irradiated fuel characterisation and for code qualification.

Abstract:
In 1994, the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo In 1994, the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo produced the groundbreaking Programme of Action, adopted by 179 nations. This pivotal document highlighted the interconnectedness of population, development, and individual well-being. Emphasizing environmental sustainability, women's empowerment, and gender equality, it expanded the scope of family planning to encompass sexual and reproductive health and rights. Additionally, the Programme of Action went beyond a limited economic understanding of development, extending its scope to include the well-being and quality of life for both current and future generations. The United Nations subsequently incorporated many Programme of Action goals into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The United Nations Commission on Population and Development is now reviewing the five-year implementation of the Programme of Action, with a new assessment slated for its thirtieth anniversary next year. The recent UNECE Regional Conference in Geneva, titled Population and Development: Ensuring Rights and Choices, played a crucial role in this process, providing insights into the Programme of Action's implementation in the broader European region. While overall improvements were noted, challenges persist, particularly in education, health, and the protection of vulnerable groups. Progress is still uneven across and within countries, adding complexity to the implementation landscape. Concerningly, multiple forms of inequality and discrimination continue to hinder individuals from realizing their full potential. The Regional Conference Report not only identifies these challenges but also offers proactive recommendations. Addressing declining fertility rates, an aging population, and demographic shifts in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the report stresses the need for innovative approaches to bolster societies’ demographic resilience. Investing in human capital, dismantling barriers to unleash individual potential, and fostering inclusive societies are key strategies. The report emphasizes the importance of listening to people's needs and desires, presenting various good practices as examples. These recommendations hold significant relevance for policymakers in post-Yugoslav countries and beyond.

Buzoianu, Mirella, Mihail Radu, and George Victor Ionescu. "Recent progress in chemical measuring capabilities in INM as a result of EMRP/EMPIR Programme." In 19th International Congress of Metrology (CIM2019), edited by Sandrine Gazal. EDP Sciences, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/metrology/201920004.

Full text
Abstract:
New metrology capabilities in chemical area are of great interest as they underpin the traceability of measurement results reported in environment, health or food sectors. To develop such capabilities a consistent research work is needed. Since 2009, the European Metrology Research Program (EMRP) enabled the National Institute of Metrology (INM) from Romania to join several Joint Research Projects (JRPs) in chemical field. Main outcomes of this helped INM in developing and implementing measurement capabilities in gas chromatography (GC) and inductive couple plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Accordingly, a brief review of the best practice achieved at INM after participating in ENV08 and SIB09 is described. Further, the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) facilitated expanding the existing metrology capabilities/infrastructure within the frame of two research potential projects (RPOT) in chemical field. Aspects regarding developing ICP-MS technique for measuring mass fractions of elements in natural matrix are presented in the frame of EMPIR RPOT1601. Also, some developments are presented in gas chromatography as a result of participating in the EMPIR RPOT1602.

Abstract:
We use a large-scale randomized experiment to study the impact of augmenting staffing in the world’s largest public early childhood program: India’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). Adding a half-time worker doubled net preschool instructional time and led to 0.29σ and 0.46σ increases in math and language test scores after 18 months for children who remained enrolled in the program. Rates of stunting and severe malnutrition were also lower in the treatment group. A cost-benefit analysis suggests that the benefits of augmenting ICDS staffing are likely to significantly exceed its costs even under conservative assumptions.

Desai, Sonalde. Gender Inequalities and Demographic Behavior: India. Population Council, 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy1994.1003.

Full text
Abstract:
As India prepares for the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), it is clear that the country’s population policy faces a number of serious challenges. Although India was the first country to announce an official family planning program in 1952, its population has grown from 361 million in 1951 to 844 million in 1991. This is one of three reports on the relationship between gender equity, family structure and dynamics, and the achievement of reproductive choice prepared by the Population Council for the 1994 International Year of the Family and the 1994 ICPD. These reports provide critical reviews of the relationship between gender inequality and demographic behavior in three demographically significant, culturally distinct parts of the developing world: Egypt, India, and Ghana and Kenya. The purpose of the reports is to help governments and international agencies design and implement policies that are affirmative of women, sensitive to the family’s central role in resource allocation and distribution, and effective in achieving broad-based population and development goals.
