Full textNonverbal communication occurs in healthcare daily. It may be unconscius and unclear, and it may make the patient confused and stressed. The information that the patient receive from the medical staff, can be expressed in both nonverbal and verbal communication. Under the meeting the patient can feel support and security through nonverbal communication. The purpose of this study was to elucidate professional's nonverbal communication in relation to the patient. It was conducted as a literature study where the results were based on fourteen scientific articles. They were retrieved from databases, relevant to nursing research. The results indicate that nonverbal communication is a tool in health care encounter. When the communication process continues even without words, nonverbal communication is expressed in many different ways. There, in among other, the tone, touch, gestures and body language. It demonstrates the importance of nonverbla communication in the relationship. The verbal get at deeper understanding through the nonverbal and it can streghten the relationship between the health professional and patient. Research shows that the medical profession needs to broaden its training of nonverbal communication to optimize the health care encounter. Although more research is needed on the subject.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the conductors' perceptions of and work with non-verbal communication with choir performance. The background chapter describes previous research and literature on nonverbal communication. The results of the study came through three unstructured interviews, where three choir conductors reflected over the term non-verbal communication and how they apprehend the concept. The theoretical perspective underlying this study is the interpretative hermeneutic perspective. The results show that conductors use different non-verbal communication methods in their work with choir. The non-verbal communications that the choir leaders, among other things use are the piano, the voice, but they also how reflect over hos sheet music can be interpreted. It is also apparent that the three conductors have different views on conducting. The conductor’s thoughts rang from that conducting is a bad thing and should be used sparingly. Whilst other say that conducting is the most important tool and should not be neglected. In the conclusion, the results are discussed in relation to previous research and literature.

Full textBackground: Non -verbal communication is a common term for wordless exchange between two or more people. Instead of gathering with the words you use body language in the form of gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, touch, tone and in silence listen. Research shows that non – verbal communication is the best opportunity to achieve communicative performance with patients who for various reasons cannot fully express themselves verbally, for example by aphasia as a complication of stroke and in dementia. Another group where non – verbal communication are useful is to patient from other cultures, then you do not have a common language. Non – verbal communication requires empathy, mutual trust between the nurse and patient as well as time to function optimally. Nurses expresses that nonverbal communication is a problem and that they need more experience in using non - verbal communication. Aim: Aim of the study was to describe the nurses experience of non – verbal communication. Method: The essay based on literature study involving then scientific articles from which the two main categories and three subcategories were identified to be particularly important for the aim of the study to describe the nurses experience of non – verbal communication. Results: Two main categories and four subcategories were identified. The first main categorie shows what facilitates nurses non – verbal communication and has the subcategory; Nurses positive emotions affect the non – verbal communication. The other main category shows what hinders nurses non – verbal communication and have subcategories; Nurses negative emotions affect the non – verbal communication, lack of time a barrier to nurses non – verbal communication and nurses experience of non – verbal communication in technologically advanced care. The results of the study show that non – verbal communication is perceived as a resource even in such difficult and technically complex medical care situations as respiratory care. Discussion: The relationship between nurse and patient is in many ways complicated and over time it undergoes several stages of development according to the nursing researcher Joyce Travelbee. Therefore, it may take time to get to know the patient and understand each other. In varying degrees lacks nurses both ability and experience to communicate non – verbally. Effective non – verbal communication allows nurses feelings of both satisfaction and happiness at work.

Full textBackground: Non-verbal communication is a collection name for all the information through wordless cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, body language, empathy, eye contact, touch, active listening and intonation. Research shows a weakness in non-verbal communication in serious health situations, and that the patient may need more nonverbal communication from the nurse. It is necessary for the nurse to be able to see the patient as a unique individual and understand that each person has their own care needs. Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe nurses’ experiences of non-verbal communication with patients. Method: This thesis is based on literature studies with eight articles. The results are tabulated in five categories. Results: The result is presented in five categories: the nurse's personality factors, inadequate attitude of the nurse, extra difficult communication situations, non-verbal expression of the patient as well as non-verbal social activities. The study shows that communication with patients is seen as good nursing practice and as an important part of the care. In order to build a good care relationship, the staff should see the patient as an individual and have knowledge of non-verbal communication. The nurse's personality and understanding are of great importance when non-verbal communication is used in health care. Discussion: Most nurses lack the ability to capture the non-verbal communication signs of the patient. This needs to be trained, put more value on and appreciated.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to deepen the understanding of grown-up blind people’s non-verbal communication, including body expressions and paralinguistic (voice) expressions. More specifically, the thesis includes the following three studies: Blind people’s different forms of body expressions, blind people’s non-verbal conversation regulation and blind people’s experience of their own non-verbal expressions. The focus has been on the blind participants’ competence and on their subjective perspectives. I have also compared congenitally and adventitiously blind in all of the studies. The approach is mainly phenomenological and the qualitative empirical phenomenological psychological method is the primary methodological source of inspiration. Fourteen blind persons (and also some sigthed persons) participated. They have no other obvious disability than the blindness and their ages vary between 18 and 54. Data in the first two studies consisted of video recordings and data in the last study consisted of interviews. The overall results can be summarized in the following three points: 1. There are (almost) only similarities between the congenitally blind and adventitiously blind persons concerning their paralinguistic expressions. 2. There are mainly similarities between the two groups with respect to the occurrences of different body expressive forms. 3. There are also some differences between the groups. For example, the congenitally blind persons seem to have a limited ability to use the body in an abstract and symbolic way and they often mentioned that they have been told that their body expressions deviate from sighted people’s norms. But the persons in both groups also struggle to see themselves as unique persons who express themselves on the basis of their conditions and their previous experiences.
