This thesis deals with Revolving Theatre in landscape of Český Krumlov and its influence on landscape character. First part of thesis deals with conservation of landscape character and castle parks in general. Then I describe history of Revolving Theatre placement issues in castle garden and I compare substitutive alternatives of its placement. I evaluate influence of Revolving Theatre on landscape character using ICOMOS methodology. In the end I evaluate short questionnaires which ask whether people agree with placement of Revolving Theatre in the castle garden of Český Krumlov.

AbstractAn understanding of the different microbial constellations or microbiomes, which every habitat and every organism harbor, will be the key to addressing many of the challenges humanity will face in the twenty-first century. Such comprehension could launch several innovations relating to natural and cultural capital, including historical and artistic heritage. In relation to cultural heritage, microorganisms are mainly known through their role as deteriogens, but the features creating damage can be exploited positively, attaining more sustainable restoration strategies, in accordance with the principles of compatibility and retreatability deriving from reflections on the Cultural Heritage inspired by the Charter of Venice (International charter for the Conservation and restoration of monument and sites (the Venice Chart 1964). In: ICOMOS, IInd International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments, 1964) onwards. In this article, we show a series of case studies, using both wild-type microorganisms and plant-based extracts, providing a comprehensive proof of concept of the feasibility of biotechnological solutions for a more sustainable restoration strategy, to replace the products in use which are often dangerous for operators, aggressive for works of art and no longer compatible with the environment. The overview of the case studies presented, many of which are still unpublished, responds to the need to go beyond the state of the art and has entirely sprung from suggestions by restorers, interested in learning about potential innovations and strongly determined to introduce non-toxic products in their daily work. In this perspective, the case studies dealt with two topics: bio-cleaning and disinfection. Noteworthy results were obtained on a platform of different types of artworks and different materials with compatible, harmless and selective products.

Chapter 5 analyses positive motifs related to hope and healing in the characterization of nurse and schoolteacher roles. This positive affect contrasts with the threatening representation of young women in the public sphere embodied by the ‘modern girl,’ or moga character. The second part of this chapter contextualizes this post-war character in relation to the pre-war moga, making a case for the post-war gangsters molls played by Mihara Yōko as a post-war equivalent. The historical contexts of the period are explored, positioning the mother trope in relation to post-war social change. Finally, changes in the mother trope after the 1950s are investigated and contextualized within discourses of war guilt and anti-nuclear protest. Moving from domestic to public female character tropes, this chapter investigates trends in the representation of young women on-screen. Youthful female representation is contextualized in the ‘New Life’ discourses of the early post-war era. This chapter engages with extant scholarship on the shōjo, making a case for the young female characters of the early post-war as successors to the earlier shōjo characterizations. The case of the Hiroshima Maidens and early atomic discourse positions the shōjo as victim, while depictions of youthful female sexuality lend the trope connotations of hope and post-war rebirth. Case studies include Spring Awakens (Haru no mezame, Naruse Mikio, 1947) and Children of the Bomb (Genbaku no ko, Shindō Kaneto, 1952).

This chapter charts the uses of Osama bin Laden's image in the first decade of the twenty-first century, a period marked by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, US military interventions, and growing resistance to global inequalities. More than any other iconic figure to emerge in the new millennium, Osama bin Laden provided a symbol for popular frustrations with the neoliberal world order in the global South. In the early 2000s people in multiple world regions used bin Laden iconography to articulate a sense of marginalization and demands for systemic change. However, few of those who wore bin Laden T-shirts subscribed to his beliefs or endorsed his tactics. Many simply perceived bin Laden as a figurative "superpower" that symbolically approximated the United States. To account for this interpretation, this chapter concentrates on the urban environments of coastal Kenya, where some young people represented various grievances through bin Laden iconography. In an effort to explain why they did so, this chapter highlights acute feelings of alienation within religious and ethnic minority communities along Kenya's Indian Ocean coast. It shows how some Kenyans perceived their experiences of marginality as part of a larger system of repression that bin Laden's actions appeared to address..

This chapter discusses the place of icons in worship, their character, and the way they came to symbolize the holy and mediate between earth and heaven. In particular, as icons became a vivid focus of devotion, they began to embody human relations with God the Creator and Ruler of the entire Christian world. It is argued that women played a notable part in this developing cult of icons. The chapter concentrates on some features of Late Antique Mediterranean culture, shared by Jews and Gentiles, pagan and Christian alike. These provided a common social experience within which the artistic evolution of the Christian church took place. In particular, the first part of this chapter is devoted to a discussion of funerary art, for this represents one of the most striking ways whereby Christians transmitted pagan rituals and artistic forms to their new faith. The second part examines some of the reasons for the preservation of these forms, once assimilated to a Christian mode, when they came under attack in the East. It asks how much that response informs us about the role of women in the cult of icons.

This paper presents an ambient auditory display that communicates the time of day. Four soundscapes represent different quadrants of the clock. Auditory icons divide the quadrants into three parts that represent hours, and four partitions that represent every quarter of an hour. The auditory display is little intrusive and only informative to those who are privy to its principles.
