Delirium is a frequent complication of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions manifesting as acute confusion with inattention and disordered thinking. Patients in the ICU who develop acute delirium are more likely to experience long term disability and mortality. The purpose of this doctoral project was to evaluate an existing organizational quality improvement project to guide recommendations on improving care in the ICU. The practice-focused research question was: Does improving adherence to the ICU Liberation ABCDEF bundle for patients admitted to the ICU decrease incidence of delirium compar

ABSTRACT Each year approximately five million people are treated in the nation's intensive care units making intensive care one of the most expensive components of the U.S. healthcare system. Of these patients, 400,000-500,000 will die annually giving the ICU the distinction of having the highest rate of mortality and complications in the hospital setting. Studies have demonstrated that one in ten patients who die each day in ICUs might survive if intensivists were present to manage clinical care and direct treatment plans (Randolph & Pronovost, 2002; Dimick, Pronovost, Heitmiller & Lipsett, 2

Introduction: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) remains a significant public health burden in the United States. Persons afflicted with more severe TBIs are usually admitted to an ICU, where they are at risk for a number of complications throughout their hospitalization. The first three articles investigate various types of outcome uncertainty and how they relate to match attendance demand, while the remaining two articles test the efficiency of sports betting markets. The first article presents a new method of calculating match importance. Unlike the previous approaches in the literature, it does not require ex-post information and can be used for any type of season outcome. The second article shows that the additional playoff stage in the Czech ice hockey "Extraliga" lowers the probabilit

博士
國立陽明大學
生理學研究所
102
Critically ill patients who undergo respiratory failure and receive mechanical ventilation have a necessity of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The principle of managing mechanically ventilated ICU patients is based on the pathophysiology of respiratory failure and underlying disease. Therefore, to investigate disease pathogenesis can provide the critical information for intensivists to refine the management of these mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU setting. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the important diseases leading to

Abstract:
Pregnancy and childbirth is a sacred time in a woman's life, experienced as a normal physiological event for most women. Alterations to a woman's physiology during pregnancy means that an admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) during pregnancy or birth is likely to represent an episode of severe maternal morbidity. An integrated literature review found that there was a paucity of literature relating to critically ill women requiring admission to the ICU for severe maternal complications during pregnancy or birth. The literature relating to these women was largely focused on the pathophys

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a pre-operative health education programme provided to cardiac surgery patients at a private hospital in Gauteng. A questionnaire was used to collect data and indicated that most patients were satisfied with the pre-operative education that they received before their cardiac surgery procedure, and therefore felt well prepared for the operation. It is, however, evident that family involvement with pre-operative education was not satisfactory. This lack of family involvement is a limitation in the present progra

We investigated the correlation between OMV% (optimal %minute volume) and outcomes of patients with mechanical ventilation in ICU. Methods: This is an observational study in a general ICU. All patients with ventilator from Dec 1 2012 to Sep 30 2013 were enrolled. OMV% was measured in patients with spontaneous breathing under Adaptive Support Ventilation mode, while the % minute volume needed to have ventilator control rate approaches one from zero. T

Abstract:
There are many issues involved in implementing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) projects in general, and infrastructure (ICT/I) projects in particular. Failures are still common despite advances in project management tools, and increased ICT sophistication. Executive sponsorship and support is acknowledged to make a difference to the success or failure of these kinds of projects. Little has been written on the views of non-ICT executives about the issues they have with ICT/I projects, which have particular challenges because of their highly technical nature. This research sou

Yes
The concept of smart city is emerging as a key strategy to tackle the problems generated by the urban population growth and rapid development. It is widely recognised that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) play a key role in addressing some of the urban societal challenges such as improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Although there are various ICT tools providing intelligence and services relating to energy consumption and monitoring processes, they mostly tend to work in isolation. Therefore, this paper presents the outcomes and impacts of the concep
