Whelan, Timothy Charles. "The relationship between leader behaviour and idea implementation by subordinates." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2011. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/846360/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research concerned corporate entrepreneurship which Chapter 1 argued results from subordinates' idea implementations and the nature of the relationship with their leader - a relationship which has experienced a paucity of prior research. Chapter 2 reviewed research philosophies and concluded that mixed methods should be utilised and thus three studies were undertaken in a complementary research strategy. Study I (Chapter 3) via the development and testing of hypotheses, demonstrated support for the relationship between transformational leader behaviour, leader-member exchange, autonomy, risk propensity, creativity and idea implementation. Study II (Chapter 4) via focus group meetings, demonstrated support for Study I results together with two models which purport to describe the interrelationship between leader behaviour and subordinates' idea implementation. Study III (Chapter 5) via a longitudinal autoethnography created by the researcher whilst embedded in the research subject Group* described an environment in which poor leader behaviour precipitated poor leader-subordinate relationships and a reduced willingness to implement ideas, whilst good leader behaviour was associated with more positive attitudes by subordinates and a willingness to take risks and implement ideas. The summary research findings, implications for practitioners and recommendations for future research are contained in Chapter 6. The researcher was motivated to conduct this research based on his MBA dissertation (1999) which investigated the phenomenon of an organisation regaining market leadership which the researcher has subsequently recognised referenced the concept of corporate entrepreneurship and which left unanswered questions as to its antecedents. Further, with a background of thirty-three years as a practitioner with most being spent in increasing senior leadership positions, the researcher has long-been of the view that the subtleties and nuances of leader behaviour are crucial to organisational performance with that performance needing to be measured by the delivery of actions rather than by ideas which are generated but never realised. * A major Anglo-American cultured assembly of strategically independent companies that form a publicly quoted Group on the London Stock Exchange and with a £1 billion market capitalisation.

Lai, Justin Yi-Shen. "From idea to implementation : fostering creativity and design maturity in novices." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/53112.

Abstract:
Thesis (S. M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2009.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 85-88).
This thesis explores how novices, in particular students, design products for people and how to foster creativity in students who are accustomed to a traditional engineering curriculum. In a world of messy, ill-definied and "wicked" problems, students must learn how to struggle with and take on these challenges, regardless of the disciplines they choose to pursue in the future. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are taken to observe the efficacy of such methods. Two case studies based in the design classroom are described. First, findings reveal the need to teach students a more nuanced, deeper view of using user-centered methods. Designers cannot haphazardly follow instructions for methods without thinking about implications to the design process. Second, it is important to expose students to fresh, new, design scenarios and to train them to communicate their message through various media. These findings help researchers shed light on the path from the idea to implementation of products designed with end users in mind.

Sitzia-Verleure, Benjamin. "Internet-Based Innovation Screening and Pre-Assessment Tool - Prototype Methodology Implementation." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3428.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the groundwork development of an Internet-based idea assessment tool to guide innovators through the design process and educate them on the ‘best practices’ of transforming creative ideas into marketable products. The system triages registered users based on their knowledge, assesses the most suitable level of technical terminology and completes a pre-assessment of ideas. The outputs of the developed system are an idea outline, a product requirements list, a basic opportunity summary and an opportunity score for the idea being assessed. An extensive literature review on popular product development methodologies was conducted to identify which methodology would be robust enough to be used as part of an online process to assess ideas. A review of 3,600 Internet websites on product innovation and product development indicated a lack of guidance offered on the many product design processes available and mixed messages regarding which to use. The Internet search identified a lack of structure for innovators as well as a lack of coordinated educational resources to guide innovators. Combining the results of the literature review and the information gathered during the Internet search, an online system was developed using several programming languages to complete the pre-assessment tasks. A series of tests were conducted using volunteers to establish the viability of the assessment process developed and test the features developed to improve user/website interaction. Suggestions for further development of the model and method will be made at the conclusion of the thesis. The work presented in this thesis provides an excellent foundation for future development of an Internet-based idea assessment tool to guide innovators through the design process.

DÅDERMAN, ANTONIA, and MALIN ÅSELIUS. "Implementation of an Idea Management System in a Global Organization : A Case Study in the Automotive Industry."

Full text
Abstract:
Disruptive changes driven by sustainability, new technology and servitization challenge companies’ current products and business models. This increases the interest in radical innovations, and consequently the interest to capture radical ideas. At the same time, globalization increases the importance for digital tools in order to connect and communicate between different geographical locations. An idea management system (IMS) allows large, global companies to conduct idea management in a structured way throughout the entire company. This study aims to investigate and identify factors important for the implementation of an IMS in companies that operates globally. This is done with a case study at a company in the automotive industry who is standing before an industrial transformation. In order to analyze the empirical findings two existing frameworks is combined into an empirical classification framework. The previous literature and the empirical analysis identified three important themes; process, culture and system. The discussion around the three themes allowed for a connection between the empirical findings and the previous literature, leading to conclusions regarding the implementation of an IMS. The study firstly concludes that finding ideas is no problem, it is more important to have the right processes in place for handling ideas. One of the key aspects is individual motivation and that the system is used for learning rather than performing. A risk identified was that goals within large companies may conflict with goals of radical innovation, which highlights the importance of flexible leadership and flexible systems within the company. The IMS should start with basic features and start at selected markets, allowing feedback from the IMS ambassadors to assist in the future development of the system. Categorizing ideas and using monthly campaigns for specific problem areas can facilitate the handling of a large number of ideas, preventing the IMS from becoming a “black hole” where ideas are submitted and then disappear.

Birdsall, Ian A. "It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: The Forces Affecting Implementation of Strategies for an Information Technology Project in the Department of Defense." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/11109.

Full text
Abstract:
Public strategy is a widely discussed concept, which especially in an election year is often proposed as a means to improving administrative operations. Over the last 40 years, there has been an explosion in the number of books written about strategy. The academic community and the public have been bombarded with countless, theories, models, frameworks, approaches and schools about strategy. We have seen the rise and fall of strategic planning and the movement from strategic management to strategic leadership to strategic thinking. Despite the plethora of solutions, some to problems yet to be discovered, both the private and public sectors continue to see strategies fail. How can it be that strategies still fail when we have so many people available who know how to make them succeed? This study uses an information technology project in the Department of Defense as a field study to determine why the strategies for that project succeeded or why they failed. The research draws on concepts from the Delphi Technique, Force Field Theory, classic strategy literature and public administration to identify and map various levels of forces extant in the implementation environment for those strategies.

Lindkvist, Carmel Clifford. "The investigation of technological adoption in a facilities management department at a financial institution : from idea to implementation." Thesis, University of Reading, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.553068.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the introduction of a technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for facilities management (FM) services. FM is argued to be a complex discipline which results in diverse discourses from actors internal and external to FM. In order to investigate and understand what this means for FM, concepts and a model from service innovation theory are employed. The Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) position based on social constructionism also informs the investigation. Empirically, one in-house FM department in a financial institution was used to case study the introduction of RFID for the FM areas of security access control and workplace management. The case study involved two years of field work where the author had a dual role of being employed by the organisation and a researcher for her study. Primary data included participant observations and interviews with actors. Secondary data was in the form of corporate artefacts. Findings illustrate the discourses of the relevant actors toward the technology introduction in a critical way. The discourses that emerged at each stage of the innovation process described in the case study either hindered or drove technology introduction. Power and context played a role in determining the discourse that prevailed within each stage. The process of introducing the technology divulged into four trajectories which were strategy, technology, service professional or entrepreneur. Trajectories occurred simultaneously and certain trajectories were stronger than others depending on the innovation stage and the actors' discourses. Overall, lessons learnt that shed light in understanding technology introduction in FM was enabled from a unique methodological approach to this topic. Insights were pulled together and argued that discourses of actors at the micro and macro level of the power structure are influential in introducing technology. The introduction of new technology to FM is found to be complex due to the nature and context of the FM discipline.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis puts focus on the points where organisations perceive, translate and implement a new organisational idea, and the implementation and translation of one specific efficiency method is studied. We have looked at how a group of small manufacturing companies have implemented an efficiency method (Efficient production/Lean Production) and how they have translated it to fit their own organisation.

The authors were interested in finding out both about the challenges and the positive outcomes of implementing an efficiency method in a company. While getting to know more about the subject, the translator’s (the person responsible of implementing the method into the own organisation) role and importance to the implementation became more interesting. In cooperation with a Host Company (HC), a decision was made to study a group of small manufacturing companies who had all participated in one of HC’s programs, Lean School for Small Companies.

To be able to make generalisations from the results, a multiple-case study was carried out. To fulfil our purpose and gain a somewhat objective understanding of the processes of implementation we decided that it was necessary to interview two people from each company, one that had attended the Lean School and one who did not, but was directly affected by the efficiency method in daily work. The empirical findings were analysed in the light of the theoretical ideas we found about implementation of efficiency methods and translation of organisational ideas.

The results of the study were in many aspects consistant with the theories found on the subject. The processes of an implementation is complex and are affected by the factors commitment of leaders, problems or obstacles, the translators role and ability to manage the translation process and, furthermore, by knowledge input.

Clifford, Sarah E. "The Implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in a Virtual Public Charter School." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2018. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2449.

Full text
Abstract:
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees certain rights and protections to students with disabilities enrolled in public schools, and to their families. Even though virtual schools are one of the fastest growing trends in public k-12 education, there is evidence that these schools may not be fully implementing IDEA for enrolled students with disabilities. There has been some concern regarding the appropriateness of virtual education for student with disabilities, as well as some concern for the spectrum of services being offered in virtual schools. This case study examined the implementation of special education supports and services in one public virtual k-12 school in the United States. Interviews, document review, and participant observations were used to collect data. Findings indicated that components of IDEA were not being universally implemented for students with disabilities. Limited programming options, large special education caseloads, and an over-dependence on parents and other non-teacher adults limits students’ access to Free and Appropriate Public Education, Least Restrictive Environment, and Individualized Education Plans. Issues were also identified in the provision of Appropriate Evaluation, Parent Participation, and Procedural Safeguards. Regardless of documented challenges, benefits to virtual education were noted. Parent, faculty and staff participants reported being happier with virtual school than brick-and-mortar. Faculty enjoys easy access to a multitude of academic data. Relationships and communication among community members was reported to be stronger than what was previously experienced in brick-and-mortar schools. Faculty, staff and parent participants discussed students’ emotional and physical safety as a benefit of virtual education.

Rossouw, Theresa Marie. "Identity, personhood and power : a critical analysis of the principle of respect for autonomy and the idea of informed consent, and their implementation in an androgynous and multicultural society." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/19906.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Autonomy and informed consent are two interrelated concepts given much prominence in contemporary biomedical discourse. The word autonomy, from the Greek autos (self) and nomos (rule), originally referred to the self-governance of independent Hellenic states, but was extended to individuals during the time of the Enlightenment, most notably through the work of Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill. In healthcare, the autonomy model is grounded in the idea of the dignity of persons and the claim people have on each other to privacy, self-direction, the establishment of their own values and life plans based on information and reasoning, and the freedom to act on the results of their contemplation. Autonomy thus finds expression in the ethical and legal requirement of informed consent. Feminists and multiculturalists have however argued that since autonomy rests on the Enlightenment ideals of rationality, objectivity and independence, unconstrained by emotional and spiritual qualities, it serves to isolate the individual and thus fails to rectify the dehumanisation and depersonalisation of modern scientific medical practice. It only serves to exacerbate the problematic power-differential between doctor and patient. Medicine is a unique profession since it operates in a space where religion, morality, metaphysics, science and culture come together. It is a privileged space because health care providers assume responsibility for the care of their patients outside the usual moral space defined by equality and autonomy. Patients necessarily relinquish some of their autonomy and power to experts and autonomy thus cannot account for the moral calling that epitomizes and defines medicine. Recognition of the dependence of patients need not be viewed negatively as a lack of autonomy or incompetence, but could rather reinforce the understanding of our shared human vulnerability and that we are all ultimately patients. There is however no need to abandon the concept of autonomy altogether. A world without autonomy is unconceivable. When we recognise how the concept functions in the modern world as a social construct, we can harness its positive properties to create a new form of identity. We can utilise the possibility of self-stylization embedded in autonomy to fashion ourselves into responsible moral agents that are responsive not only to ourselves, but also to others, whether in our own species or in that of another. Responsible agency depends on mature deliberators that are mindful of the necessary diversity of the moral life and the complex nature of the moral subject. I thus argue that the development of modern individualism should not be rejected altogether, since we cannot return to some pre-modern sense of community, or transcend it altogether in some postmodern deconstruction of the self. We also do not need to search for a different word to supplant the concept of autonomy in moral life. What we rather need is a different attitude of being in the world; an attitude that strives for holism, not only of the self, but also of the moral community. We can only be whole if we acknowledge and embrace our interdependence as social and moral beings, as Homo moralis.
‘n Wêreld sonder outonomie is ondenkbaar.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is that from an employee perspective examine the organizational climate of AF (Arbetsförmedlingen) södra Västmanland (Köping, Arboga, Kungsör). The results will include innovation improvement proposals, which are intended to raise employees needs in the project Förnyelseresan (translated to “A travel of change towards an innovative organizational climate”) within the area Self-leadership and culture. Hence AF södra Västmanland has got the possibility to use the improvement proposals as complementary basis to achieve their goals within the mentioned area. Research question: Which changes, from an employee perspective, may AF södra Västmanland implement with the purpose of managing Förnyelseresan’s category Self-leadership and culture in order to promote an innovative organizational climate? Limitations: The authors limit the study to investigate the pronounced and visible part of the organizational climate of AF södra Västmanland. The study's main focus is to investigate the opinions, thoughts and ideas of their employees concerning the topic and to allow them to provide their approach of the organizational environment. Method: The main focus field of the study is designed as a case study, based on a qualitative research, which includes an inductive approach and openness to interpretation. The study's empirical data is collected from semi-structured interviews with employees from AF södra Västmanland, observations from a workshop and interaction with contacts within the organization. Results and conclusions: The results of the study show that AF södra Västmanland needs to do several changes and implement corresponding improvements with the help of the employees in order to change the organizational climate aiming to respond to the targets of Förnyelseresan. The conclusion is that workload combined with lack of time does affect the organizational climate and the capacity to innovate negatively. The improvement proposals involve themes including climate, transparency and time for creativity.

Abstract:
Congress in 1997 recognized that there were some issues and concerns that had emerged surrounding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and sought to address these issues and concerns by mandating a national evaluation on the implementation and progress toward improving outcomes for students with disabilities. The Study of the State and Local Implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was designed to address how the amendments of IDEA were being implemented by states, school districts, and schools. This mixed methods study examined the first year of data collected from the six-year Study of the State and Local Implementation of IDEA (SLIIDEA) and analyzing 20 case studies that used interviews of special education personnel and principals, conducted at the local school level. Data from the national survey were examined in light of findings from the case studies. The case studies brought out the varying opinions on implementation success at the local level. Further case studies for each year of the study would be helpful in determining the level of implementation locally and the significant insights of local school personnel on whether these initiatives have worked.

Abstract:
Through a descriptive and exploratory approach, and by review and deduction of archival and documentary resources, supplemented by empirical evidence from case studies, this thesis traces, analyses and describes the historic trajectory of planning events in Kampala City, Uganda, since the inception of modern town planning in 1903, and runs through the various planning episodes of 1912, 1919, 1930, 1951, 1972 and 1994. The planning ideas at interplay in each planning period and their expression in planning schemes vis-à-vis spatial outcomes form the major focus. The study results show the existence of two distinct landscapes; Mengo for the Native Baganda peoples and Kampala for the Europeans, a dualism that existed for much of the period before 1968. Modern town planning was particularly applied to the colonial city while the native city grew with little attempts to planning. Four main ideas are identified as having informed planning and transformed Kampala – first, the utopian ideals of the century; secondly, “the mosquito theory” and the general health concern and fear of catching „native‟ diseases – malaria and plague; thirdly, racial segregation and fourth, an influx of migrant labour into Kampala City, and attempts to meet an expanding urban need in the immediate post war years and after independence in 1962 saw the transfer and/or the transposition of the modernist and in particular, of the new towns planning ideas – which were particularly expressed in the plans of 1963-1968 by the United Nations Planning Mission. The post-independence era also saw the various ideas articulated under traditional land use and zoning practices especially expressed in the 1972 and 1994 plans. While a great deal of planning work has been done in both the colonial and postcolonial eras, findings on ground show that almost all planning ideas expressed in the colonial planning schemes of Kampala City in 1912, 1919, 1930 and 1951 have had physical impact on the spatial structure of Kampala City compared to any period after independence. The postcolonial era experienced little application and implementation of the planning ideas and plans. This is attributed to several factors including: governance issues, lack of financial resources and manpower, the complicated land tenure systems emerging from 1900 Buganda agreement, lack of political commitment, and importation of foreign models without reorienting them to the local context, and so forth. The study concludes by highlighting some of the reflections and the implications for future planning, considerations which perhaps may be useful for the planners of tomorrow and may influence the development of planning policy and perhaps „new‟ planning approaches.

Vidal, Sandoval Jesus Enrique. "Implicit IDA-PBC Design and Implementation for a Portal Crane System." Master's thesis, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12404/15353.

Full text
Abstract:
Interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control (IDA-PBC) is a wellknown technique which regulates the behavior of nonlinear systems, assigning a target port-Hamiltonian (pH) structure to the closed-loop. In underactuated mechanical systems (UMSs) its application requires the satisfaction of matching conditions, which in many cases demands to solve partial differential equations (PDEs). Only recently, the IDA-PBC has been extended to UMSs modeled implicitly, where the system dynamics in pH representation are described by a set of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). In some system classes this implicit approach allows to circumvent the PDE problem and also to design an output-feedback law. The present thesis deals with the design and implementation of the total energy shaping implicit IDA-PBC on a portal crane system located at the laboratory of the Control Engineering Group at TU-Ilmenau. The implicit controller is additionally compared with a simplified (explicit) IDA-PBC [1]. This algorithm shapes the total energy and avoids the PDE problem. However, this thesis reveales a significant implementation flaw in the algorithm, which then could be solved.

This dissertation presents the history of space in the musical thought of the 2Othcentury (from Kurth to Clifton, from Varèse to Xenakis) and outlines the development of spatialization in the theory and practice of contenlporary music (after 1950). The text emphasizes perceptual and temporal aspects of musical spatiality, thus reflecting the close connection of space and time in human experience. A new definition of spatialization draws from Ingarden’s notion of the musical work; a new typology of spatial designs embraces music for different acoustic environments, movements of performers and audiences, various positions of musicians in space, etc. The study of spatialization includes a survey of the writings of many composers (e.g. Ives, Boulez, Stockhausen, Cage) and an examination of their compositions. The final part of the dissertation presents three approaches to spatialization: Brant’ s simultaneity of sound layers, Xenakis’s movement of sound, and Schafer’s music of ritual and soundscape.

Abstract:
In our global world, ideas in general and social work models in particular are spread and implemented in a variety of socioeconomic, political and cultural contexts, generating different outcomes. Many ideas and services launched in different countries by international organisations or governments in order to bring social justice to marginalised and oppressed groups, such as people with disabilities, have been criticised for not reaching or involving those such services aim to serve. Low impact of social programs on the welfare of people and communities has put the effectiveness of such programs into question and can leave people with disabilities dissatisfied with the social services available in their environment. The main purpose of this dissertation is to examine how an international idea for social work practice, as community based rehabilitation (CBR), is implemented in different structures and institutional contexts. To examine how an idea is implemented in different contexts, following research questions have guided the work: “How was the idea of CBR introduced to and implemented in Uganda and Sweden?”, “What contextual factors influenced the implementation of CBR in these countries?”, “What limitations and possibilities affected CBRs chances of continuity and institutionalisation in the two countries?” and finally“Can international ideas and models for social work be successfully used in different structural and institutional contexts?”. The study is based on a qualitative design with a comparative approach using qualitative content analysis for analysing data collected through official documents and interviews with parents to children with disabilities and professionals working in the children’s surrounding. The results show how difficult it is to monitor development through projects in both non-Western and Western countries. International ideas of social work, such as CBR, can make a difference in both Uganda and Sweden for the improvement of the living condition of those in need of services; at least, as long as there are funding for the projects and cooperation between authorities, NGOs and the parents of children with disabilities. The results show also that there are many differences in the process of the implementation of CBR in Uganda and Sweden. The colonial past of Uganda and its weak welfare state make CBR an important project for the improvement of the life conditions of children with disabilities. Meanwhile, the Swedish strong welfare state and legal protection of children with disabilities make CBR much more marginal in Sweden than in Uganda. However, CBRs successes to promote social justice for children with disabilities and their families makes it necessary to integrate the project to the existing organisation of the welfare state in the two countries. Changing existing welfare services requires engagement in political decision-makings, cooperation, and a critical examination of structural and institutional arrangements, in order to include successful projects in the daily functions and duties of the welfare state of every country. This will prevent an international idea for social work to not only be a temporary trend to follow, but also an established working method for helping people in need of proper services.

Abstract:
Background: Home care are a very common form of care and many prefer this form of care in front of hospitalized care. The home care service is therefore in need of a planning system in order to plan its work as efficiently as possible. Many of these implementations fail. Purpose: Many implementations in the home care service fail. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate what critical success factors project managers should focus on to achieve a successfull implementation. Method: This study has been conducted with a qualitative study as research method. A literature study was carried out by finding previous research in the field, which was then used as a theoretical framework. This was then compared with the empirical evidence acquired through semi-structured interviews with people with experience of implementations in the home care industry. Result: The result shows that the CSF’s that appeared in the literature study should also be used in practice. In addition, three new factors were identified Conclusion: All of the CSF’s presented in the literature study were reinforced by the interviews conducted with the informants in this study. References to how these should be used have also been developed. For example, the focus on the factor resources should primarily be put on the resource time. This study also concludes that depending on the type of organization it is about, such as small private companies, private medium-sized companies or municipal-owned businesses, focus should be on different CSF’s.

Callan, Samantha. "Cultural change in organisations and the implementation of family-friendly policies." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2005. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7766.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a grounded theory approach, two case studies were carried out in large organisations which have recently implemented family-friendly policies. The studies asked whether or not cultural change has taken place as a result of the implementation of these policies. Using Shein's (1992) three level model and definition of culture, attention was focused on underlying assumptions or 'root' facets of organisational culture (and conceptual distinctions made between culture, image and identity). After establishing which facets are present and how they exist in combination with each other, shifts which have taken place as a direct or indirect result of the introduction of policies were identified. Especial interest was taken in the way the primacy of work was expressed through the ideal worker type and the extent to which this type has been replaced by the integrated worker type (Rapoport et al 2002), which acknowledges that family and other commitments are as legitimate as occupational demands. Both studies conclude that, as yet, there have been only slight adjustments in the construction of this ideal worker type and that employees do not make a permanent shift towards the integrated worker type but `toggle' between these two types. Explanations are developed for shifts in other cultural facets, such as the importance of autonomy, emphases on equality or individuation, sense of entitlement and attitudes to change. The utility of the notion of purposive cultural change is considered, given that high levels of anxiety are released when unconscious and shared mental structures are destabilised in such processes of organizational learning. The merits of a more evolutionary model are explored.

Biggers, Mandy Sue. "Elementary teachers' ideas about, planning for, and implementation of learner-directed and teacher-directed inquiry: a mixed methods study." Diss., University of Iowa, 2013. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2438.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a framework for variations of classroom inquiry (National Research Council [NRC], 2000, p. 29), this study explored 40 inservice elementary teachers' planning, modification, and enactment of kit-based science curriculum materials. As part of the study, a new observation protocol was modified from an existing protocol (Practices of Science Observation Protocol [P-SOP]) to measure the amount of teacher direction in science inquiry lessons (Practices of Science Observation Protocol + Directedness [P-SOPd]). An embedded mixed methods design was employed to investigate four questions: 1. How valid and reliable is the P-SOPd? 2. In what ways do inservice elementary teachers adapt existing elementary science curriculum materials across the inquiry continuum? 3. What is the relationship between the overall quality of inquiry and variations of inquiry in elementary teachers' enacted science instruction? 4. How do inservice elementary teachers' ideas about the inquiry continuum influence their adaptation of elementary science curriculum materials? Each teacher chose three lessons from a science unit for video-recorded observation, and submitted lesson plans for the three lessons. Lesson plans and videos were scored using the P-SOPd. The scores were also compared between the two protocols to determine if a correlation existed between the level of inquiry (measured on the P-SOP) and the amount of teacher direction (measured on the P-SOPd). Findings indicated no significant differences between planned and enacted lessons for the amount of teacher direction, but a correlation existed between the level of inquiry and the amount of teacher direction. In effect, the elementary teachers taught their science curriculum materials with a high level of fidelity for both the features of inquiry and the amount of teacher direction. A smaller group of three case study teachers were followed for the school year to give a more in-depth explanation of the quantitative findings. Case study findings revealed that the teachers' science instruction was teacher-directed while their conceptions of inquiry were student-directed. This study contributes to existing research on preservice teachers' learning about the continuum (Biggers & Forbes, 2012) and inservice teachers' ideas about the five features of inquiry (Biggers & Forbes, in press).

Abstract:
Climate change and the continuing changes that accompany it require society and its broader institutions to evolve continuously. Today’s continual atmospheric damage requires a commitment to ecological considerations that show consistent and meaningful carbon reductions. The success of global carbon mitigation depends entirely on the capabilities of individual governing bodies agreeing and delivering upon their climate ambitions. However, delivering impactful progress on emissions is a considerable challenge. Although there has been significant research as to what climate mitigation goals should encompass, the policy path and resulting incremental changes needed to achieve them require additional scholarly attention. This thesis analyses the role of institutions as they adapt to support societies addressing climate change. Adopting a historical institutional approach provides a pathway for understanding the coordination of information, individuals, institutional adjustments, and their role in the carbon policy process. By focusing on the impact of ecological modernisation ideas, this work addresses the ambiguity that lies between contradicting approaches to climate governance and instead, analyses the incremental changes needed to support societies as they address climate change. Systemically gathering policy tools from 1992-2012, this research empirically examines the nature, ambition, and achievements of mitigation policy in the EU and US as they transition to a low-carbon future.

Abstract:

This study have two purposes, one is to examine the ideological consistency between Sida’s gender policy and the gender policy of an implemented project, and the other purpose consists of an attempt to identify a relation between the implementation of Sida’s/LAMP’s policies and actual changes on gender equality in the partnering country. Three research questions were formulated around the topics of women’s situation in Tanzania; the ideological origin of Sida’s gender policy and the reflection of these in the LAMP policy; and the consequences of an implementation in terms of equality between men and women in Babati District, Tanzania. The analysis is carried out with the help of different theoretical perspectives on women and gender in development, perspectives that have been selected on the basis that they have been influential and dominating in the contemporary planning and policy making of development agencies. The method used was a functional idea analysis and a field study where semi-structured interviews were conducted. The conclusion regarding the ideological consistency is that a comparison between the policies of Sida and LAMP shows patterns of great ideological resemblance, and that both have a somewhat stronger connection to the GAD approach. The conclusion regarding actual changes on gender equality reveals that an integration of gender aspects into the LAMP programme has had several consequences for women. The programme has helped to reduce women’s work load, increased their chances of income, and promoted women’s participation in decision-making on different levels. These are all aspects that may challenge the traditional order of women’s relationship to men and the subordination of women.

The reason for the study is that IT-enabled organizational change processes such as information system implementations have high costs and disappointing results. Studies to identify causes of the mentioned failures are mainly based on a variance approach. This study applies another approach which is not yet performed in this field of research and affects several themes. Based on a process approach data is compared with ideal-process theories to identify the generative mechanisms causing the unfolding of the process. Thus, the study identifies a recipe and not the ingredients.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities. The thesis forms a basis for additional discussions of PLM tool integration across the engineering, manufacturing, MRO and EOL lifecycle phases to support business management processes.

Abstract:
This diploma’s thesis discourses the cryptographic systems and ciphers, whose function, usage and practical implementation are analysed. In the first chapter basic cryptographic terms, symmetric and asymetric cryptographic algorithms and are mentioned. Also usage and reliability are analysed. Following chapters mention substitution, transposition, block and stream ciphers, which are elementary for most cryptographic algorithms. There are also mentioned the modes, which the ciphers work in. In the fourth chapter are described the principles of some chosen cryptographic algorithms. The objective is to make clear the essence of the algorithms’ behavior. When describing some more difficult algorithms the block scheme is added. At the end of each algorithm’s description the example of practical usage is written. The chapter no. five discusses the hardware implementation. Hardware and software implementation is compared from the practical point of view. Several design instruments are described and different hardware design programming languages with their progress, advantages and disadvantages are mentioned. Chapter six discourses the hardware implementation design of chosen ciphers. Concretely the design of stream cipher with pseudo-random sequence generator is designed in VHDL and also in Matlab. As the second design was chosen the block cipher GOST, which was designed in VHDL too. Both designs were tested and verified and then the results were summarized.

Code generators play a key role in model-driven software development. They are responsible for transforming high-level assets (models) into implementation assets (code). Most generators are based on templates, which are pieces of text instrumented with code expansion elements. They receive an input and produce an output according to the template's programming. To build such template-based generators, the code of an existing implementation, already tested and validated, can be used as a reference, in a process known as code migration. With software evolution and the need for changes in the code generator, the templates start to differ from this reference implementation. In order to restablish the synchronization, additional effort is required. Tackling the challenge of keeping these assets synchronized (reference implementation and templates) is this dissertation's subject. The goal is to provide some automation to the code migration process, even if partial, in order to increase productivity in the maintenance of code generators. A mechanism was developed to make it possible to automatically reproduce changes that are performed in the reference implementation into one or more code generation templates. This mechanism was evaluated through an empirical study, yielding good performance in a controlled environment. This indicates that automation can help to reduce the effort in the maintenance of code generators in a model-driven development context.

Innovation has been highlighted as a core competence for contemporary organizations to maintain or enhance effectiveness in rapidly changing environments. Thus, employees’ innovation and creativity has received more and more attention in organizations. However, seldom researches put emphasis on the process of idea generation and idea implementation. Therefore, this study differentiate the two stages and we also focus on the individual level. This study tries to exam if idea generation mediate the relationship between proactive personality, and idea implementation. Besides, this study also tries to exam if idea generation mediate the relationship between self efficacy, and idea implementation. Moreover, we use LMX(Leader-Member Exchange), Affected-trust with team members, and network ability as a moderator to investigate the relationship between idea generation, and idea implementation. The research is performed through the questionnaires survey to companies in Taiwan with two versions of questionnaires: one for managers and the other for team members. We sent 175 questionnaires and a total of 123 valid questionnaires are returned, and the final response rate is 70.3%. We use hierarchical regression analysis to verify all hypotheses. Our findings can be summarized as following. For one, idea generation could partially mediate the effect of proactive personality on idea implementation. For the other, idea generation could partially mediate the effect of self-efficacy on idea implementation.

As long as the impact of innovation on the industries, researches focusing on employees’ innovation behavior get more and more attention. Based on the innovation process model, this research would like to figure out how intuitive cognitive style and harmonious passion affect on idea generation, and the mediation effect of idea generation between intuitive cognitive style, harmonious passion these two variables and idea implementation. At last, we also would like to know the moderation effect of perceived psychological safety, developmental feedback from supervisor and absorptive capacity between idea generation and idea implementation. The research is performed through the questionnaires survey to companies in Taiwan with two versions of questionnaires: one for managers and another for team members. We sent 500 questionnaires and a total of 233 valid questionnaires are returned, and the final response rate is 46.4%. We use hierarchical regression analysis to verify all hypotheses. Our findings can be summarized as following. First, idea generation has positive direct impact on idea implementation and intuitive cognitive style and harmonious passion have direct positive impact on idea generation. Second, idea generation has positive mediation effect between intuitive cognitive style, harmonious passion these two variables and idea implementation. Finally moderators have no significant moderation effect between idea generation and idea implementation.

In this paper, we first introduce the architecture of IDEA and key scheduling, and use mathematical model to describe it. Then we extend the inner sub-blocks from 16 bits to 32bits. So we must redefine and check the basic functions, extend the multiplication of integers to 32bits and do some proper modification. The extended IDEA can enhance the security and flexibility of the cryptography system.

Although many scholars have proposed that innovation is a process which can be conceptualized as two different stages - “ideas generation” and “idea implementation”, the factors that shape the relation between creativity and idea implementation still remain largely unknown. Based on previous research, this study investigate the relationship between idea generation and idea implementation, and to explore openness to experience, prosocial motivation and the presence of creative co-worker are separately positively correlated with idea generation, and to further examines the possibility that the relation between idea generation and idea implementation is regulated by employees’ growth need strength, implementation instrumentality and transformation leadership. Using data from 274 valid questionnaires with correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis, results indicated that idea generation will truly affected by individual factors ( openness to experience and prosocial motivation ) and contextual factors (the presence of creative co-worker) ; and also confirmed that the relationship between idea generation and idea implementation are regulated by individual factors ( growth need strength ) and contextual factors ( transformational leadership ) . The contributions of this study can not only extend earlier innovation research, make the work of innovation field more integrity which are beneficial to future research but also provide a wealth of practical management implications applying the personality, motivation and context factors to human resource management in establishing and improving the systems of recruitment and selection, training and development and performance appraisal.

Along with the speedy growth of global economy, the number of companies all around the world is getting higher which leads to the fiercer competition between them. The personalities of employees are seen as important factors that have huge influences to the generation and implementation new ideas process of the organizations. I propose that proactive personality and extraversion have positive relationships with idea generation. Besides that, idea generation has a strong relationship with idea implementation. Moreover, it is believed that idea generation mediates the relationship between both proactive personality and extraversion with idea implementation. Since idea generation is considered as a core competence for organizations to outperform their competitors, I investigate whether other factors can enhance the relationship between personalities of employees and idea generation. Because transformational leaders are creative and they can change the surrounding environment thus, it is expected that transformational leadership can create more opportunities for proactive and extrovert employees to generate more new and useful ideas. However, transformational leadership does not significantly moderate the correlation between proactive personality and extraversion with idea generation. Furthermore, I also figured out that high performance work system can leverage the talent of employees which cause better performances of both employees and organizations. I propose that high performance work system can provoke proactive and extrovert employees to produce more ideas. In other words, high performance work system plays a moderating role in the relationship between proactive personality and extraversion with idea generation. Nevertheless, the result shows that high performance work system only facilitates the idea generation of proactive employees, not the idea generation of extrovert employees. Using the sample of 243 Vietnamese respondents from various industries and companies, my research contributes to this research field and also brings out some suggestions for future researches.

The purpose of this study is to understand the differences and causes between the Homeland Study Curriculum idea and its implementation. This study is based on three researching methods: First of all, via analyzing documents and semi-structured interviewing the compilers of curriculum, to understand the compiling idea and developing process. Secondly, observing by taping the Homeland Study classes in 5th and 6th grade in order to compare the idea and implementation. Thirdly, based on the differences between idea and implementation to interview the teachers for understanding the causes of differences. The following findings are emerged from this study: 1.The developing process of curriculum is active and multiple. Teachers are the main compilers. However, they encounter some difficulties on obtaining and using resources. Besides, local, international and inheriting homeland education will be the developing goal in the future. 2.The collaborative teaching is hard to accomplish because the lack of teaching resources, administrative support and relative information. The teachers’ expertise and cognition toward the curriculum content are also the causes of the differences between idea and implementation. 3.Reasons that affect the selection on teaching content are local human concept and trait, and the emphasis on living experiences. However, the uncertainness of homeland education’s future orientation also affects the enthusiasm of teachers and students. 4.Teachers think that it would be more helpful to arouse studying interests via understanding the ancient’s culture and activity records. Multi-thinking and observing are good studying methods. 5.Considering students’ individual differences, teachers may flexibly adopt various teaching and evaluating methods. From the teaching content teachers can lead students to think their future development. According to the findings, some suggestions are provided in the study for the field of homeland curriculum development in the future.

The purpose of this study is to explore the impacts of the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act during its three stages of advocacy, planning and implementation, through understanding the points made by varied stakeholders of the Act like advocators, responsible officials in the central government and local authorities, members in the local Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee, and the Division of Protection for Women and Children in the Police Department. The hermeneutics of qualitative research is the basic methodology for this study. First of all, the researcher inspects the formation and legislation of the Act with essential policy elements, including ideas and values, and wider contexts for its implementation. Literature review and document analysis are applied to construct a contextual framework. To further understand the whole structure of mechanism in details, we then look into sexual harassment from different faces of guidance, education, grievance, mediation, prevention, and its accusing and punishment, with interviewing data from the stakeholders. There are two major findings of this study. First, it finds several problems in the implementing mechanism of the Act. For example, the Act’s practical objectives are not clear and measurable, leading to more disputes about the victims in the grievance system, no sufficient service capacity, no sufficient professional and responsible staff, and no sufficient financial budget. Second, two demands are highly expected by the stakeholders, a clear and recognizable definition of sexual harassment, on the one hand, and the importance of protection in the implementation of the Act, on the other. Finally, the researcher provides several policy suggestions about the improvement the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act in its future implementation.

Abstract:
The research will investigate the East Coast Radio Corporate Advertising Campaign which ran from early 1996 through until the end of March 1998. The 'catch phrase' or title of the campaign was "Hot Days, Cool Waves". The research will also focus on the station's constructs of its' audience. The thesis will follow through the agency's pitch to the client the end of the campaign. The campaign incorporates print, billboards, cinema and electronic media. The corporate advertising campaign preceded a large increase in East Coast Radio listenership. East Coast Radio began life as Radio Port Natal, part of the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Under the management of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Port Natal developed a particular image and specific audience profiles The new private station needed to establish an identity autonomous from the South African Broadcasting Company, in terms of both inherited and new listeners. The thesis will investigate the extent to which East Coast Radio retained the original audience after the transfer of ownership and the modality through which it was able to construct an extended audience for the station.

This study aims to discuss the Finnish " left no-one behind " philosophy of education, compares their differences with Taiwan Education, and implements the Finnish relevant teaching strategies in the classroom in Taiwan in order to see how their effectiveness in the implementation process and illustrates the difficulties and problems encountered by the instructor in the teaching process from the "Structure and Action theory " and " system and lifeworld " two theoretical perspectives. This study adopts literature analysis and action research, the former mainly for educational literature of Finland and Taiwan. As a teacher and researcher, after understanding Finnish teaching strategies, I implemented it in my second grade classroom. I purposive sample in 3 criteria --"academic achievement", "learning attitude", "daily routine" to choose 8 lag students as subjects and in addition, also interviewed three elementary teachers’ opinions about the teaching strategies adopted in this study. Through the above methods, the conclusions of this study were as follows: First, the comparison between Finland and Taiwan Education: from the view of structure, the core concept of Finnish education is "left no-one behind"; Taiwan is the gifted education, emphasizing on competition, focusing on score, ranking. In Taiwan, the school administration is basically in the instructor's position; Finland, the school administration is to assist teachers in teaching work. From the point of view of actors, Finland teacher have very high teaching autonomy. Their administrative work is must related to teaching, so they can focus on teaching. Comparatively speaking Taiwan teacher's autonomy is relatively low, greatly affected by the school administration. And they have many administrative works nothing to do with teaching. From the teaching perspective, because there is no uniform midterm exam, curriculum, teaching and is flexibility to adjust to student’s need in Finland. Relatively speaking, there is a unified monthly exam in Taiwan, therefore, curriculum, teaching schedule must be consistent. Second, The effectiveness of teaching strategies implemented in Finland: for these students who learn behind, some teaching strategies work, but some does not work. However, the school having a uniform curriculum and uniform monthly exam, teachers have to catch up the teaching schedule to finish the work, so even if some teaching strategies work, teachers have no enough time to teach according to student’s need. And Taiwan teacher’s work contains many things other than teaching, so they are too busy to ignore teaching. Reflections: whether from cultural factors (emphasis in gifted education rather than left no-one behind, monitoring rather than trust, learning objectives rather than focusing on the process) or teaching site factors (uniform curriculum and uniform midterm exam, many classroom chores) the effectiveness of the implementation of the teaching strategies are limited by structure in Taiwan. However, as an actor, through training, education, reading or the self-reflection and conscious in the process of teaching, the teacher still can change their mind and affect the structure within her sphere of competence.

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) can receive various types of digital or analog signals of input and output. It use them to control or monitor almost all types of mechanical and electrical equipments. Nowadays, the industrial use of PLC is quite similar to a compact computer. Even the Programmable Automation Controller (PAC), which combines a personal computer and a PLC, has emerged. Used to control machine or manufacturing processes and other controllable electronic systems (such as unmanned chemical plants) through digital or analog signals, PLC is widely used n current industrial controls. In the field of industrial control, the application of PLC control technology is indispensable. Unlike high-level languages and assembly languages, the programming language of PLC is compared with general computer languages. This paper is aimed at the program editing part of PLC. Developed an easy PLC programming language with Chinese language support, editing, action simulation and testing, online debugging, PLC connection and action content recording, and providing users to query PLC history actions. Help users to learn, use, edit, and debug quickly. Making automation design not to be a complicated programming anymore.

A cost system offers in-time, accurate and relevant cost information to managers in a changing industry and a highly enterprise competition environment, thus, the system is the stander of managers’ decision making; moreover, the combination of cost information and other management strategies can improve the enterprises’ competition. However, the innovation of technology has been improving as time goes by and, this result in an automatic production, an increasing manufacturing expense and, a significant change of cost structure of the product. Therefore, a big impact into both cost distribution and cost calculation of the traditional cost system, hence it could not offer in-time and accurate cost information. On the other hand, Activity-Based Costing (ABC) is difficult in executing and time consuming is another problem for the enterprises. And thereby Kaplan and Anderson (2003) published Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC), which had modified the weaknesses of ABC. In short, this study presents the results of a case study based survey, in which a Foil manufacture as a target company and two top productions as the cost targets. Interviewing the managers of the company, observing and gathering evidence are the ways that we found out that how did the traditional cost system change into ABC or TDABC, and how was the implementation process. The cost benefits of implementation process under different cost system models had been widely discussed in this paper then.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates, the storage capacity will increase at nearly 75% a year in recent years. Therefore, the goals of data storage technology target on the issues of how to provide higher efficiency, higher capacity, higher scalability, and easier management. At the same time, the technological advances in signal processing at the physical interface layer have allowed the rapid evolution of Ethernet performance from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps, and now to 10 Gbps. The performance of gigabit Ethernet is higher enough to support the transport requirement of the storage system. The iSCSI is a one of new protocols for Ethernet-based IP storage system. Based on the Small compute System Interface (SCSI), iSCSI enables host computer systems to perform block data input/output (I/O) operations over TCP/IP networks. The thesis is major on the design of Internet-based ATA IDE interface (iIDE). A customized TCP/IP protocol module is designed and verified via an embedded network system. With coprocessor-based protocol offload, we developed an iIDE interface card which embeds 100 Mbps Ethernet interface and uses ARM CPU cooperated with Xilinx FPGA to offload the TCP/IP protocol and IDE interface from host. Via the self developed iIDE interface card, an IP-based IDE SAN is constructed and provided for further researches.
