Abstract:
Boltzmann’s integration method may prove to be a very powerful tool to study the transport diffusion of guest molecules in nanoporous host systems. In many cases, however, the prerequisites for applying this method are not completely fulfilled. In the following, the consequences of these deviations on the accuracy of the obtained results are discussed. It is found that the results of Boltzmann’s integration method can be corrected by different considerations. The discussion is focussed on the concentration profiles observed during the adsorption and desorption of methanol in ferrierite-type crystals as observable by interference microscopy.

Abstract:
A new reality, where human labor is replaced by automated machines is causing production management to rethink how they can steer the production to meet their customers demand. There is a gap of values, techniques and tools to communicate with the processes existing in the new modern factories, where data sometimes is the single output. This thesis purpose was to develop a model out of Lean and Six Sigma, as an answer to how modern factory could work with an information system, reaching the ideal state.   Through a theoretical analysis, Lean and Six Sigma differences in values, techniques and tools were weighted by the ideal state and recommendations from literature. Through a unstructured interview and system design review with a logistic group at a Swedish Modern Factory (SMF) a concept of an information system was developed. A project to test the model was initialized, where Define, Measure and Analyze phase was conducted. The model was thereafter modified from the projects implications.   The result was a Lean Six Sigma model which values are customer focus, ideal state, result orientation, committed leadership, education and involvement. The technique follow a DMAIC cycle and continuous improvements through a current to future state approach. The used techniques were considered Six Sigma heavy, where Leans principles are considered into the models values. The information system supports the model in setting the processes of the factory in either stability or potential state, where they differ in Measure and Analyze phase. The test at SMF developed several assignable causes to variation on the component As lead time. The model adapted after the test to involve a Measurement System Analysis (MSA), before setting the next current state of the process.<br>En ny verklighet där människor byts ut mot automatiska maskiner får produktionstekniker att fundera hur det ska styra produktionen för att möta kunders behov.

The concept of the Semantic Web is an expansion of the Web for computers, enabling them to comprehend the meaning of information. In addition, Semantic Web Services (SWS), the emerging convergence of Web Services with the Semantic Web, is the next major generation of the Web (and of the Internet), in which e-services and business communication become more knowledge-based and agent-based. The study arose out of a technology review of the Semantic Web and its current adoption. Following further analysis and research into business cases involving Semantic Web applications, the author focused specifically on the system integration business in an effort to understand the potential business impacts of the Semantic Web for system integration. In the system integration field, there are various trends for companies thinking about adopting the Semantic Web into the real business world. BERNARDINETTI, STEFANO. "Potential aquifer characterization through the integration of multivariate geophysical datasets." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Cagliari, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11584/260393.

Full text
Abstract:
The work developed in this thesis has the aim to provide a methodology for geophysical characterization of an aquifer. Electrical resistivity tomography and seismic P-waves refraction/reflection were applied to explore the subsurface. Thanks to their sensitivity to factors as mineralogy, porosity, texture and pore content, electrical resistivity and acoustic waves can depict subsurface changes within an aquifer. The coupled use of both geophysical parameters allow to obtain complementary informations about the subsurface, reducing the uncertainty with respect to the univariate case. Two different approaches were proposed to characterize the shallow part and the deep of the subsurface. Two post-processing integration methods were proposed, where the shallower is based on electrical resistivity and P-waves seismic velocity from tomographic techniques and the deeper on seismic attributes datasets from seismic reflection. The results are a shallow unique model characterizing the subsurface with geophysical facies corresponding to different lithological conditions and a high-resolution large-scale image depicting main structural and stratigraphic changes for the aquifer characterization. The two approaches are based on clustering techniques: k-means and Silhouette were applied to find out the optimal number of geophysical facies from tomographic dataset and Self-organizing maps were used to highlight pattern in the seismic attributes dataset. Integration methods were applied in two different geological and hydrogeological environments: an aquifer in intra-Apennine basin (Laterina, Italy) and a complex hydrothermal system into the Solfatara volcano (Naples, Italy). In the case of Laterina, electrical resistivity tomography and seismic reflection/refraction surveys were carried out to characterize shallow unconfined aquifers in alluvial deposits and a deeper confined aquifer in rock. The tomographic integration revealed six geophysical facies consistent with stratigraphic log. Moreover allowed to image the 2D disposition of main aquifers and aquitards. The integration of seismic attributes provided a large-scale image of the highlighting shallow alluvial recent and Villafranchian fluvial-lacustrine deposits above the Monte Cervarola Unit (sandstone/marls). The integration processes were applied at the case of Solfatara to highlight the shallower fluids paths, and the main structural paths of uprising for fluids within the caldera. The tomographic images provided three different geophysical facies, one consistent with poorly consolidated sediments, and two high velocity low and high resistivity, respectively associable with liquid dominated and gas dominated media. The integrated model obtained by SOM provided a image of the caldera with sub vertical discontinuities interpreted as fracture or ring fault, main paths for fluids circulation. Moreover, several sub-horizontal bright spot were depicted within the caldera, consistent with vapor-saturated media.

Ospina, Alvarado Angelica Maria. "Unified framework for construction project integration and its potential association with project performance." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/39584.

Full text
Abstract:
The construction industry is not performing as desired by the stakeholders that compose it. Several authors and practitioners have claimed that moving the industry towards a more integrated approach to project delivery could notoriously improve the overall performance of the industry. The main purpose of this dissertation was to obtain a unified framework for project integration, by identifying the critical success attributes for achieving project integration, the different levels of importance of attributes other than the critical success attributes to improve the integration process, and by determining if there are major differences among the perceptions of respondents depending on their role in the industry. In addition, this study also sought to identify potential associations between the integration attributes and the different project performance or project success criteria. In order to develop this framework and to identify the potential associations between integration attributes and project performance, a survey was conducted. The sample of the survey was composed of construction industry practitioners; it included owners, facility managers, engineers, specialty consultants, general contractors, subcontractors, among other professionals. The sample size was 264 respondents. The main method used for developing the framework was the Thurstone Scaling Method of Successive Interval Procedure; in addition, this method was complemented and validated using correlation analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis and analysis of the means. According to the perception of respondents, 19 attributes out of the 45 attributes under study, were identified as critical for successfully achieving project integration. In addition, four other categories of importance were identified and the other integration attributes were categorized accordingly. No major differences were found between the perceptions that different project participants had in regard to the importance of the different attributes to achieve project integration, leading to the conclusion that the perception of respondents in regard to this matter is very homogeneous. The potential impact of the 45 attributes on 12 performance criteria was analyzed. According to the perception of respondents, most of the integration attributes have different levels of impact on the different performance criteria; however there is not a clear relationship between the level of importance for achieving project integration and the level of potential impact on the different performance criteria. Most of the integration attributes are divided in two groups depending on their behavior across all integration criteria; in addition there are three groups that have one attribute each. The potential impact of each of these groups differs from one performance criterion to the other; however there are some performance criteria where the behavior of the groups is similar. The groups have a similar behavior on cost, time, and productivity; they also behave similarly on quality and owner satisfaction; on functionality and user satisfaction; and on health and safety and environmental impact and sustainability.

Bhardwaj, Suresh. "Challenges and potential of technology integration in modern ship management practices." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2840.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the challenges and potential of technology integration in current ship management practices. While technology advancements were designed to be contributing to minimising task complexity, issues such as fatigue, increased administrative burden and technology assisted accidents still plague the industry. In spite of the clearly recognisable benefits of using modern technology in the management of ships, in practice its application appears lacking by a considerable margin. The main driver of the study was to appreciate the cause of this disparity. The study first reviewed a wide body of literature on issues involving the use of technology which included academic literature with empirical evidences and theoretical explanations of implementation of technology at work. With the help of the extant knowledge this research embarked on providing an explanation to the gap that existed in the application of technology in the shipping industry. By taking a case study approach the thesis looked into the induction and integration of technology in the management and operation of ships that primarily interfaced closely between the ship and its management unit on shore. Three companies with mutually diverse management setup were studied. The fourth case comprised of purposefully selected senior members of ships’ staff. The analysis of the data revealed that the manifestation of the gap in technology implementation is caused by deeper influences at work in the shipping industry. The un-optimised technology integration results in the seafarer, who is the keystone to the technology application, becoming a victim of the circumstances. The technology that was intended to ease operations and burdens ends up in controlling him, even leaving him under-resourced and causing fatigue. This was not an unintended outcome but the result of weak regulatory practices, short-term capital outlook and weakened labour practices in the shipping industry all caused by wider social and economic developments affecting not just this industry but businesses globally. The impact of such influences was however more acute in this industry resulting in such extreme consequence. By bringing to light the limited application of some fundamental principles of human-systems integration, this study has attempted to expand the boundaries of research on the subject and contributed to the holistic understanding of the various underlying factors that influence technology integration in ship management processes.

De, Silva Shehan. "Integration of CNT bio potential sensors based on a SAW backscatter device." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2008. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842761/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduces the concept of using carbon nanotubes (CNT) as a novel bio-sensor and demonstrates the feasibility of incorporating these sensing elements with a Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) device to enhance the functionality for bio-sensing applications. SAW devices have an inherently high quality factor "Q" and frequency selection properties that complement the state-of- the-art Multi Wall CNT sensors used for this application. The coupling of these two novel technologies provides an ideal platform for continuing to develop a fully integrated bio-sensor using R.F backscatter interrogation. Preliminary analysis provides us with MWCNT integrated by the way of a LC modulator to SAW devices which operate wirelessly and passively at a frequency of 2.63SGHz, where the CNT based dry electrode sensors perform with enhanced performance on porcine skin. The CNT's were precisely grown on Ni catalyst with diameters of c.a. 40nm at a rate of 260nm/min. This ensures the CNTs could punch through the dead skin layer and probe the bio-potentials as demonstrated in solution and porcine skin. The demonstration of the graphene boundary spacing of -3.38A obtained by HR-TEM and the ripples due to the boundaries at ~290-300eV as indicated by EELS confirm multiwall growth of the CNTs. The use of MWCNT based arrays for sensing facilitates the use of said sensors without the need for a Sodium Chloride based gel. The sensitivity of the MWCNT to ionic charge exchange, as expected in the human system, was enhanced by the application of an AgCl layer to the CNT. Elemental analysis of the surface of the sensors by use of EDX indicated transition peaks associated with Ag and Cl. EELS complemented the results indicating the M4 and M5 excitation edges for Ag and 2s level excitation peaks for Cl. Chemical analysis by XPS indicated AgCl formation by the binding energy peaks of the elements correlating to AgCl. The comparative studies carried out with commercial ECG/EEG sensors indicate excellent response and remains stable through the bio-potential detection frequency range of 20 - 80Hz. Thus, the work extends the current knowledge in deployable high sensitivity passive CNT nano sensors transfixed to a SAW structure, which will enable wireless connectivity. The SAW structure enabled a sensing platform merged with a unique ID capability utilising the inherent 3dB power split seen in IDT structures on a piezoelectiic substrate, which was varied using time domain VNA measurements. Medical applications in the form of ECG and EEG sensing have been the core focus of the apparatus, which can be extended for any bio-sensing need such as EMG. The sensors have a sensitivity range defined by a simple LC circuit, and thus can be extended to EEG or any other CNT based bio-sensing paradigm. The technology promises exceptional size reductions in comparison with current cutting edge wireless ECG and EEG sensors. This is accomplished by the use of an inductor, diode, SAW device, sensor and antenna in a tightly coupled passive system. Further attractions of the technology presented include the redundancy of servicing and low cost of mass production. On the negative side, the current cautionary advice issued by the HSE on the use of CNTs will need to be addressed.

Abstract:
There is no universal solution to these demographic changes but an understanding of individual motives for moving to rural areas could help regions to form strategies to ensure the supply of competence and prevent the negative demographic changes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons why individuals from other societies choose to move to the sparsely populated municipality of Pajala and how their integration process has developed. The scientific questions that were formulated were designed to investigate the following: motives to why the individuals had chosen to move to Pajala, if there was any resemblance in how they described themselves, how well they perceived that they have been integrated in the society and what measures that the society could undertake to increase the attractiveness of the municipality and facilitate the integration process. For the collection of data a semi structured interview was used as the method and for processing and analysis of data a thematic analysis was conducted. The results indicate that the most common motive for individuals to move were based on social factors and the most common trait was “social carefulness”. The participants described Pajala as an open and inclusive society but despite this there were difficulties with integration. Potential for development of both integration and marketing were detected.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the symbolism in art objects and visual culture belonging to the Moravian Church in western Sweden during the 18th century. The objects chosen are portraits from Gothenburg, church art from the countryside, as well as printed decorations in books and church service agendas. The Moravian church is one part of a general transition from an early modern society, through Enlightenment, towards romantiscism and secularization. The Moravian church was also to a high degree an international movement. Therefore the objects analyzed here have been related to examples from the international Moravian church, as well as to local examples without any obvious association to the community. One aspect of the determinant ideology of the Moravian church was their view of how practical life, the religious ideology and estetic ideals together formed aspects of a whole. Life was not seen as fragmented in parts. Instead its different forms of expression were all regarded as ways for the Divine to express itself, as well as ways for the people to experience and approach the Divine, an approach that goes within the frame of ”Ordo Salutis”. This ability to experience life as a whole is also a scientific approach used in the present study to interpret their art and symbolism. The study shows how a number of symbols (the eye, the star, the wound, the mandorla and the flower) all are aspects aiming to point towards the one main transition – the one between light and dark, life and death.

Abstract:
Abstract   In the light of the political debate that takes place today – how refugees should be integrated into the Swedish society – the film Sveriges bästa svensk was created on the initiative of Arbetarnas bildningsförbund (ABF) and Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan (SV) to prevent racism and xenophobia through discussion, which the film aims to contribute with. The initiators of the film have said that it can work in multiple applications; one such area is in school. The main purpose of this study was to examine if the short-film Sveriges bästa svensk could be used as an educational tool, according to teachers, when they talk about integration issues with students. To get answers out of the investigation, qualitative interviews with teachers and students from the sixth and ninth grade were conducted. The study is based on three theoretical frameworks: the multimodal approach, which addresses how digital media has been given a greater purpose - how students' knowledge, learning and meaning evolve; the progressivistic perspective, which describes how students attain new knowledge based on specific educational activities, and finally the socio-scientific perspective, which through a teaching method called “SSI-projects” exemplifies how schools can work with social issues. The results of the study show that the teachers are positive in using Sveriges bästa svensk as a part of their education material. However, for it to have an influencing effect on students' attitudes and opinions, it should be used as a tool for discussion and/or be part of a larger project. The teachers’ statements can be linked to a progressivistic approach on teaching, and to the socio-scientific model of "SSI projects" that is based on how social issues can be explored. Furthermore, the teachers prefer to use film in their teaching because it mediates visual messages that can facilitate students' meaning, which the multimodal approach treats. The film raised new thoughts and ideas of the students through assimilation and accommodation, which can develop new insights and experiences about how society looks like.  Film as a medium, and in this case specifically exemplified by Sveriges bästa svensk can be expected to contribute to a change in society when it comes to including the broad concept of integration. Despite the values that students get from home about refugees and social issues in society, Sveriges bästa svensk has the potential to work as a tool for discussion about the issues of integration, and possibly begin to change the mindset of students.<br>Sammanfattning Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka huruvida lärare upplever att filmen Sveriges bästa svensk kan användas i skolundervisningen vid integrationsfrågor. Vilken betydelse har just mediet film i undervisning, ur lärarnas perspektiv?

Elafif, Mohamed. "An examination of the extent of and the potential for Arab economic integration." Thesis, View thesis, 2008. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/38359.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to examine the extent of and the potential for Arab economic integration. It adds to the growing literature on the issue of economic integration by throwing the spotlight on several issues hitherto little considered in the existing literature. The thesis especially blends various aspects of economic integration with models of spatial competition, economic geography, regionalisation and globalisation to explain the problems of and prospects for economic integration for the Arab countries. It is important to realise that economic integration has become an important aim for almost all countries in the world; in particular, less developed countries, which need more economic efforts to be able to deal with the current international milieu and the gale of globalisation. The Arab countries have engaged in a number of initiatives to advance economic integration, however despite this the degree of economic integration among them is still relatively insignificant. The thesis also attempts to offer theoretical models to explain the obstacles preventing economic integration in the Arab world. This thesis is, to the best of the author’s knowledge and belief, the first rigorous study of the extent of and the potential for Arab economic integration through three vital economic perspectives: trade, investment and labour flows. In the first perspective, this study investigates the nature of intra-Arab trade and which particular countries/sub-group of countries may potentially become an integrated regional production system, or hub. This investigation is done within the scope of gravity models, which assume that intra-trade is a function of the GDPs of the involved countries and the distance between them. The thesis extends the literature by introducing spatial models and models of new economic geography to explain how economic integration evolves in the current international milieu concomitantly driven by globalisation and regionalisation. In the second perspective, this study investigates intra-Arab FDI and capital mobility. The postulated model assumes that intra-Arab FDI is a function of a number of economic variables, such as GDP, GDP per capita, inflation and purchasing power parity. The thesis offers a comprehensive theoretical model to explain how successful economic integration can be carried out by FDI flows. In the third perspective, the study investigates intra-Arab labour flows. The proposed model utilises remittances as an indicator of labour flows. It assumes that remittances are a function of some economic variables, such as GDP per capita, the real price of oil, and the oil production of Saudi Arabia, which represents the main Arab host country of Arab labour flows. The proposed theoretical model offers insights into the dynamics of labour flows and oil price movements. The econometric study in the thesis applies panel data for the period 1985-2005, and employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) fixed effects regression. The most important empirical finding of the study is that Arab economic integration has been significantly affected by intra-trade, intra-FDI and intra-labour flows among sub-unions of Arab countries.

Abstract:
West Nile virus has become a major risk to humans since its first appearance in New York City in 1999. Physicians and state health officials are interested in new and more efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. This study modeled habitat suitability for mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus. Habitat characteristics were used to derive risk maps for the entire state of Mississippi. Statistical significance tests yielded objective evidence for choosing among many habitat variables. Variables that were significantly correlated with diagnosed human cases for 2002 were combined in weighted linear algebraic models using a geographic information system (GIS). Road density, slope, and summer precipitation minus evaporation (P-E) were the most significant variables. GIS-based model results were compared with results from logistic regression models. The algebraic model was preferred when validated by 2003 human cases. If adopted, GIS-based risk models can help guide mosquito control efforts.

Courtney, Paul Richard. "Small towns and the rural economy : a study of their contemporary functions and potential role in rural development." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/370.

Full text
Abstract:
As Rural Development assumes a greater importance in European policy, one strategy to stimulate economic activity across a broad range of sectors is to use small towns as a focal point for economic development. This may be particularly relevant in the UK where there is increasing concern over the future vitality and viability of these towns. However, such a strategy rests on the assumption that there is a strong level of interdependence between small towns and their surrounding areas. While their historical legacy suggests close integration, developments in the wider economy and resultant socio-economic restructuring have undermined the traditional functions of small towns and may have severed many of these local linkages. Methodologies are developed to measure the size and spatial distribution of economic linkages in and around two small towns in rural England; one located in the 'remote' area of South Devon, and one in more 'accessible' Buckinghamshire. Results from two validation exercises indicate that self-completion methods are a useful means of obtaining spatial economic data from producers and consumers. Analysis compares the degree of economic integration of the towns into their respective local economies, and identifies key characteristics of firms and households that are good predictors of strong local integration. Results show that the strength of local economic integration is a function of economic and demographic structure as well as proximity to urban centres. This illustrates that the functional role of small towns in the economy is a more useful criterion on which to base policy recommendations than is demographic size. The town in the 'remote' rural area is found to be more strongly integrated into its locality than the town in the 'accessible' area; indicating that benefits of intervention are more likely to 'trickle out' into the surrounding area in the former case. Further, the minimal role of agriculture in the local economy implies that traditional measures of farm support are no longer likely to provide a valuable method of supporting rural communities. A useful area for subsequent enquiry would be to employ an 'integration index' to develop settlement typologies so that more generalisations can be made to aid the process of policy formulation.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEng) -- Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The ever-increasing existence of electronic systems and devices within the residential environment, along with the human desire to simplify life and daily routine, is generating increased interest in the field of home automation (HA) and intelligent environments. A large variety of home automation solutions have been conceptualised or developed. However, many of these solutions are designed by experts and require professionals to install and/or operate them. Furthermore they lack the potential for seamless integration into an already functioning home environment. To bridge the gap between consumer and expert as well as allowing for integration into any existing home environment without physical alteration to the building, a modular home automation solution with seamless integration potential is proposed. The implemented system uses open source software and hardware allowing for development to continue within the existing, large open source community. It can be installed and configured without professional skills or physical alteration of the environment itself and due to its modular design, the system also allows users to add and remove functional components to and from the system providing them with a seamlessly customisable home automation solution. Conceptual design and practical implementations are covered in this document, along with recommendations for both continued research and potential avenues for expansion.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 2000 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, Pillar II of the CAP was created explicitly to promote the production of environmental outputs, such as biodiversity and landscape amenities. In the European Union (EU) New Member States (NMSs), subsistence and semi-subsistence farms coexist with larger commercially orientated farms. Due to the high number of subsistence and semi- subsistence farms in these countries, new measures in the CAP Pillar II have been developed with the aim of increasing the market integration and competitiveness of these farms. Given the apparent resilience of subsistence agriculture and the policy goal of rapid commercialisation, an assessment of the comparative provision of environmental outputs is timely. The possible environmental effects of an increase in the market integration of agricultural households are studied in this thesis. The methodology employed includes two key stages. In the first stage, an environmental efficiency score for each agricultural' household is estimated using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Since there is no price information about the environmental output, an input distance function approach is employed to characterise the multi-output technology used by each agricultural household in the sample. The environmental efficiency is calculated by decomposing the multi-output efficiency into pure technical efficiency (the efficiency to produce the marketable output) and the efficiency related to the production of environmental outputs. In the second stage, the environmental efficiency scores are regressed on several household characteristics, physical and human capital variables, and, most importantly, an index designed to capture the degree of market integration of each holding. The data used in the empirical analysis were collected through a detailed survey of agricultural households conducted in three NMSs (Bulgaria, Poland and Romania) carried out as part of the EU FP6 SCARLED project (STREP Contract No. SSPE-CT-2006- 0044201). The data included responses from a wide range of household types from fully subsistence producers to commercial farm operations.

Abstract:
Sustainable Built Environments Senior Capstone Project<br>This capstone project evaluates the current state of floating solar photovoltaic technology and proposes use of the technology on water management infrastructure in Arizona. The study finds that floating solar photovoltaic has a higher energy density (100 W/m^2) than land-based, utility-scale solar and does not involve significant cost increases. The study proposes and models a small pilot installation on Lake Pleasant Reservoir, part of the Central Arizona Project, and finds that lifetime costs per unit energy are higher than what the Central Arizona Project currently pays for energy, assuming US median per-wattinstalled costs for commercial solar. This cost however does not factor in savings from water conservation, existing infrastructure, reduced land costs, or other benefits. The study recommends water reservoirs by hydropower dams as ideal locations for floating photovoltaic installations. Justified with a significant background on Arizona’s environmental, social, and economic sustainability, as well as regulations calling for increased renewable energy generation and reduced carbon emissions, this study recommends aggressive implementation of floating solar photovoltaic technology within a sustainable development paradigm.

Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2014. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=225964.

Full text
Abstract:
Direct liquid fuel cells represent an interesting alternative to conventional hydrogen fuel cell technology. A novel analytical method for the monitoring of direct liquid fuel cells is presented. Employing a combination of chronoamperometric, gravimetric and Raman spectroscopic measurements this method allows a straightforward determination of the Faradaic efficiency of a fuel cell. This method was applied in a proof of concept study analysing the operational behaviour of a direct methanol fuel cell. A very low Faradaic efficiency was found for the fuel cell under study. This was attributed to loss of methanol from the fuel mixture due to methanol crossover, stripping of methanol by carbon dioxide as well as evaporation. It is known from the literature that a fuel change from methanol towards higher alcohols and other hydrocarbons can help to mitigate the effects of these loss processes. However, the behaviour of such alternative fuels and their mixtures in an operating fuel cell and hence the performance of the fuel cell depends at least in part on the intermolecular interactions present in those fuel mixtures. Therefore, the intermolecular interactions in binary and ternary mixtures of potential candidates for alternative fuels were investigated in the main part of this thesis. Studies on the intermolecular interactions in binary mixtures of acetone with ethanol and 1-butanol showed a tendency for self association of both compounds albeit in different concentration ranges. It was further found that the alkyl chain length of the alcohols did not have a significant effect on the intermolecular interactions in the binary and ternary mixtures. Further, the behaviour of the ternary mixture was found to closely resemble the effects found in the individual binary mixtures. Finally, binary mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and different alcohols did not show self association. It was rather found that alcohol molecules inserted into chains of DMSO molecules eventually leading to the formation of alcohol-DMSO dimers.

Chipula, Grivin. "Optimising nutrient potential from compost and irrigation with wastewater to meet crop nutritional requirements." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2013. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/7951.

Abstract:
Globally agricultural production is facing serious challenges to provide adequate food supply to meet a growing population. However, the reduced capacity of soil to support and sustain agricultural production as a result of soil fertility decline is impacting negatively on agricultural growth. Increase in the price of inorganic fertilisers and limited availability of nutrients from organic amendments has reduced progress in improving soil fertility. This research therefore aims at contributing knowledge towards evaluating the maximisation/optimisation of nutrients in compost and secondary treated sewage effluent (STSE) amended soils to meet the nutritional requirements of crops for sustainable crop production and environmental protection. STSE was irrigated on soils (sandy loam and clay loam) amended with greenwaste compost in soil incubation, glasshouse/pot and lysimeter studies. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was grown in the pots and lysimeter studies. The incubation experiment showed that for a clay loam, N mineralisation in treatments with STSE alone and combinations of compost and STSE was higher than the applied N. Increasing compost quantity in compost and STSE nutrient integration resulted in reduced net N mineralisation in the clay loam soil. In the sandy loam, increasing compost contribution in compost and STSE nutrient integration resulted in an increase in net N mineralisation. Cation exchange capacity, microbial diversity, quality of available carbon and drying and rewetting cycles influenced the net nitrogen mineralisation dynamics in both soil types. Increasing the contribution of STSE while reducing compost quantity resulted in increased nitrogen use efficiency and ryegrass dry matter yield. The environmental threat to ground and surface water pollution through NO3 --N leaching may be enhanced by the inclusion of STSE in integrated compost and STSE nutrient supply to plants. Similarly, the threat to eutrophication due to phosphorous leaching is likely to be higher with integration of compost and STSE. Ryegrass dry matter yield reduced with increasing compost contribution while the concentration of N in ryegrass herbage for the combinations of compost and STSE was above the minimum requirement for N in herbage for productive grazing and dairy cattle in the pot experiment. Using compost and STSE of similar characteristics, the ideal approach to maximise nutrient potential from compost through irrigation with STSE is when 25% compost is integrated with 75% STSE with respect to nitrogen supply.

Bass, Robert John. "The potential benefits of strategically located energy storage and the integration of power from renewable sources." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2008. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10963.

Full text
Abstract:
Ultimately there will be a limit on the amount of power from variable sources of renewable energy which can be absorbed by the electricity supply system and continue to remain stable and secure. New technical solutions are required. The development of energy storage technology could provide a potential solution. However, all the current methods involve either a significant loss of energy during the process or are unsuitable for the bulk storage of power. The research work reviews current methods of energy storage and examines the supply chain in order to resolve where energy storage should best be located. Most benefits could be gained if the energy storage units were placed adjacent to the final customers. The power lost during transmission and distribution could be minimised and the capital invested in the infrastructure would be more productive. It would require energy to be stored in relatively small quantities using simple technology, be remotely controJled and offer a long operational life. Few current methods match these requirements. In order to support the analysis of benefits which may be delivered by storing energy, the performance of a modem CCGT power station was monitored while it was operating with a number of different output profiles. The consequences were recorded and analysed for fuel used, C02 emitted, operational costs and maintenance as the plant produced power below its optimum performance. The Flow Battery was identified as the technology likely to deliver most characteristics required of an embedded energy store. However, the flow battery requires space to store the electrolyte and can be expensive to employ in urban areas where land prices are high. An enhancement of the hydraulic accumulator could be developed as an energy store. The initial analysis suggests that it offers the potential technical characteristics required and could be designed for minimum land requirements. Hence it could be located adjacent to existing electricity sub-stations or even within domestic premises, industrial complexes and commercial enterprises where land may already in the hands of the potential user.

Abstract:
CHDS State/Local<br>Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>The push by the Obama administration for a more transparent, citizen-centric government has created a new way of thinking among federal, state, and local governments: citizen participation has become a mainstay of newly written policies across the country. The adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, particularly social media, within fusion centers and local law enforcement entities could enable a more expedient exchange of information among fusion centers, law enforcement, and the public. The ability to collect and disseminate information on a real-time basis via fusion centers and law enforcement is key to the overall success of the homeland security mission; it is impossible for the federal government to have sole responsibility for safeguarding the homeland from the confines of Washington, D.C. Because fusion centers and law enforcement agencies are state and local entities, they have the capability to obtain information at a grassroots level and have the advantage of knowing the local environment, including potential targets and vulnerabilities. Social media, if leveraged appropriately, could enhance communication among fusion centers, law enforcement, and private citizens to better detect and deter terrorism. This research explores potential benefits and implementation challenges of integrating social media into fusion center and local law enforcement frameworks.

Toomey, Lola. "Unlocking the wild potential : integration of geographic differentiation in domestication processes to facilitate fish aquaculture diversification." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université de Lorraine, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LORR0034.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the ways supported to promote the sustainability of the aquaculture sector relies on the production diversification, notably through the domestication and production of new species. However, domestication is a long and difficult process which can fail due to technical challenges, socio-economic limitations, or inadequate biological features of the species of interest. Yet, some of these biological features can also vary at the intraspecific level, between allopatric populations. Indeed, geographic differentiation can shape genetic, phenotypic, and ecologic specificities, which could lead to unique domestication predisposition or socio-economic attractiveness among allopatric populations. Therefore, choosing wild populations exhibiting a high potential for aquaculture (i.e. presenting interesting expression of key traits) could facilitate the domestication and production of new species. This PhD work was aimed at (i) assessing if geographic differentiation could be useful in domestication/production of a targeted species and (ii) developing and applying an integrative method to integrate geographic differentiation in domestication programs. The approach developed was tested on a species of interest for inland aquaculture diversification, the European perch (Perca fluviatilis), and targeted first life stages. The method consists of three steps: (i) classifying wild populations into prospective units (i.e. groups of populations differentiated) which are likely divergent for key traits in aquaculture, (ii) evaluating the performance of the different prospective units in standardized culture conditions through a multi-function and multi-trait approach, and (iii) identifying the prospective unit with the highest potential for aquaculture. The first step allowed identifying five prospective units: the European Plain, Danube, Northern and Eastern Fennoscandia, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans units. The second step highlighted a geographic differentiation in key traits for aquaculture in P. fluviatilis. The third step allowed identifying differential potentials for aquaculture between prospective units. Despite some limitations, this three-step approach could allow facilitating domestication of new species or species at incipient stages of domestication which face major bottlenecks in domestication and/or production

Abstract:
In modern times of globalisation, most countries no longer consist of a homogeneous population. People from different backgrounds, with different stories, religion and culture live together in the same community. Unfortunately, this creates challenges and a modern state needs to have a plan for integration so that all these groups and individuals may live together peacefully, which is important in aspects of universal human rights and human dignity, but also for the function of a society. In this Master's thesis in Human Rights, questions about integration are discussed in a European context through four ideal-typical integration policy options from a model by Karin Borevi; together with perspectives from Seyla Benhabib, Abdelmalek Sayad and Charles Taylor. The four ideal-typical options for integration that are used in this thesis are: 1: Assimilaion to an ethnic community 2: Politics for ethnic exclusion 3: Assimilation to a civil community 4: Multicultural politics. Integration in Sweden, Great Britain and France during the 90's are used as illustrative examples of integration in order to be able to discuss the ideal-typical policy options in relation to real examples for demonstrating which political ideas and values that are built into different models of integration. In the end a normative discussion results in a solution of which values that should be prioritised and which strategy that is the best to accomplish these values. I conclude amongst other things that different forms of integration value culture, groups or individuals differently and that many different types of strategies and politics can be put into the same ideal-typical option for integration. People tend to treat cultures as unchangeable and well-defined units, even though they in reality seem to be of a changeable nature. The modern state should in my opinion work more with the principles around which type of society that would be the best for all its citizens and not so much how we should preserve what cannot be preserved in the first place, like cultures. We should create societies where cultures can mix and change. The global world is here to stay and so is the heterogeneous society, the state should focus on creating a society built on this fact, where society and people as individuals may grow.

Abstract:
Cape Town is a city with a complex housing problem due to the apartheid planning and the design of the current housing programs. Apartheid planning has segregated the city, leading to a more divided and spread out city. With the current affordable housing programs, most houses are being built in poorly located areas, resulting in inhabitants feeling more separated and isolated from the city center. To develop a more integrated society, the concept of Inclusionary housing has had a growing appeal in South Africa. The purpose of the study was to examine the concept of inclusionary housing and how it can be implemented in Cape Town to fight segregation and housing inequalities. Interviews were conducted with various stakeholders from the private sector, public sector, NGO’s and academics with the aim to provide their perspectives on inclusionary housing and to answer the question if inclusionary housing is the right tool to help Cape Town become a more integrated city. A closer investigation was made on a specific development project in Sea Point where an inclusionary housing pilot project was going to be implemented. The majority of stakeholders agree that getting an inclusionary housing policy in place in Cape Town is a step in the right direction towards a more integrated and affordable city.<br>Kapstaden har ett mycket komplicerat bostadsproblem på grund av det tidigare apartheidsystemet samt utformningen av de nuvarande bostadsprogrammen för låginkomsttagare.

Abstract:
In German refugee support work (RSW), women comprise the majority of the volunteers. Therefore, this PhD project focuses on the experiences, motivations and attitudes of female volunteers in RSW from three angles. Apart from investigating the role of gender in RSW, it studies constructions of sameness and difference and how the female volunteers resolve the latter in their daily work. The first paper analyses two quantitative studies on German volunteers in RSW. It first establishes that RSW can be conceptualised as a form of care work influenced by care ethics, which potentially forms one motive for women to be drawn to volunteering. Secondly, female volunteers also interpret their voluntary care work politically and employ it as a tool to speak out against racism and right-wing mobilisation. The paper thus demonstrates that contrary to traditional assumptions in the literature, RSW constitutes a form of political participation for women and argues that care and politics are not mutually exclusive. The second paper takes a closer look at the actual experience of female volunteers in RSW based on 22 qualitative interviews. Following social-psychological ideas of a common identity facilitating prejudice reduction, the paper first illustrates how the volunteers form bonds with refugees. However, in a second step it employs poststructural, feminist and postcolonial theory to demonstrate how difference continually intersects and disrupts these constructions of sameness. Finally, the third paper argues that female volunteers in RSW negotiate difference by following a care-ethical approach to integration. Based on the feminist ethics of care which centres on relationships and responsibility, the paper develops the theme of a ‘caring integration’. In addition, it investigates to what extent this notion can be found in the actual practice of female volunteers in refugee support work relying both on the quantitative and qualitative data.

Turnbull, Arran Kristian. "Clinical biomarkers of response to neoadjuvant endocrine therapy in breast cancer : exploring the potential of gene expression data integration." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11754.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have an established role in the treatment of estrogen receptor alpha positive (ER+) post-menopausal breast cancer. However, response rates are only 50-70% in the neoadjuvant setting and lower in advanced disease. There is a need to identify pre- or early on-treatment biomarkers to predict sensitivity which outperform those currently used, in a move towards stratified treatments and improved patient care. Given the heterogeneity known to exist in the breast cancer population, and the limited availability of matched pre- and on-treatment clinical material, this study also sought to develop novel data integration approaches allowing for the inclusion of similar previously published datasets, thus maximising the power of this study. Experimental Design Pre- and on-treatment (at 14 days and 3-months) biopsies were obtained from 34 postmenopausal women with ER+ breast cancer receiving 3 months of neoadjuvant letrozole. Illumina Beadarray gene expression data from these samples were combined with Affymetrix GeneChip data from a similar published study (n=55) and crossplatform integration approaches were evaluated. Dynamic clinical response was assessed for each patient from periodic 3D ultrasound measurements during treatment. Results Despite intrinsic differences between different microarray technologies, suitably similar studies can be directly integrated for robust and meaningful meta-analysis with improved statistical power. After mapping probe sequences to Ensembl genes it was demonstrated that, ComBat and cross platform normalisation (XPN), significantly outperform mean-centering and distance-weighted discrimination (DWD) in terms of minimising inter-platform variance. In particular it was observed that DWD, a popular method used in a number of previous studies, removed systematic bias at the expense of genuine biological variability, potentially reducing legitimate biological differences from integrated datasets. A pipeline for the successful integration of microarray datasets from different platforms was developed. Using this approach a classifier of clinical response to endocrine therapy in the neoadjuvant setting based on the expression of 4 genes was developed which predicted response with 96% and 91% accuracy in training (n=73) and independent validation (n=44) datasets respectively. An early on-treatment biopsy was found to improve predictive power in addition to pre-treatment alone. Conclusions Using a novel data integration approach developed as part of this study, a model comprising 4 novel biomarkers for accurate and robust prediction of clinical response to AIs by two weeks of treatment has been generated and validated. On-going work will investigate the applicability to other anti-estrogens, and the adjuvant setting and will assess the potential for a new therapy response test.

Abstract:
As one of its “durable solutions” to the protracted nature of refugee issues, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) promotes “local integration” of refugees in their host communities or countries. Both academic and policy debate, in conceptualizing local integration, acknowledge that it is a complex process characterized by legal, economic, social and cultural dimensions. There also appears an agreement that a successful local integration process is heavily reliant on relationships between refugees and the host community. Therefore, for local integration to achieve its intended purpose, it is important to devise means of stimulating contact and interaction between refugees and members of the host community. This thesis explores ways in which the arts can contribute to local integration in the context of refugee settlements. Through an abductive methodological approach, the thesis uses theorization around social capital and local integration, linking it with the arts to develop an analytical framework to study the potential impact of the arts in local integration processes. The framework suggests relevant characteristics of artistic activity with potential to generate social capital that can support refugee local integration.  The framework is also used to guide data collection. Data is generated from an artistic project, Speak Open the Conversation, that took place in Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda. The thesis suggests that engagement in artistic activity among refugees and between refugees and their hosts has potential to generate different kinds of social capital that can support refugee local integration.

Sankaran, Iyer Abhinaya. "New methodologies and scenarios for evaluating tidal current energy potential." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6182.

Full text
Abstract:
Transition towards a low carbon economy raises concerns of loss of security of supply with high penetrations of renewable generation displacing traditional fossil fuel based generation. While wind and wave resources are increasingly forecastable, they are stochastic in nature. The tidal current resource, although variable has the advantage of being deterministic and truly predictable. With the first Crown Estate leasing round complete for wave and tidal current energy, plans are in place to install 1000 MW of tidal capacity in the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters. The aim of the work presented in this thesis is to examine the role tidal current energy can realistically play in the future electricity mix. To achieve this objective it was first necessary to develop new methodologies to capture the temporal and spatial variability of tidal current dynamics over long timescales and identify metrics relevant in a tidal energy context. These methodologies were developed for project scale resource characterisation, and provided a basis for development of a national scale dataset. The creation of project and national scale tidal datasets capture spatial and temporal variability at a level beyond previous insight, as demonstrated in case studies of three important early stage tidal current energy development sites. The provision of a robust national scale dataset enabled the development of realistic scenarios for the growth of the tidal current energy sector in UK waters. Assessing the various scenarios proposed indicates that first-generation technology solutions have the potential to generate up to 31 TWh/yr (over 8% of 2009 UK electricity demand). However, only 14 TWh/yr can be sensibly generated after incorporating realistic economic and environmental limitations proposed in this study. The preceding development of methodologies, datasets and scenarios enabled statistical analysis of the matching characteristics of future tidal energy generation potential with the present UK electricity demand and trends of electricity usage. This analysis demonstrated that the UK tidal current energy resource is much more in phase than has previously been understood, highlighting the flaws in previous studies suggesting that a combined portfolio of sites around the UK can deliver firm power. As there is negligible firm production, base-load contribution is insignificant. However, the time-series generated from this analysis identifies the role tidal current energy can play in meeting future energy demand and offer significant benefit for the operation of the electricity system as part of an integrated portfolio.
