Abstract:
<em>Hans Christian </em><em>Andersen's "Grandmother" is a well-written short story about life and death. The analysis of the story using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) reveals the meaning and ideology which the writer expresses through the work. In the ideational metafunction, the story uses the material and relational processes the most. The use of the two processes presents the grandmother and her character vividly and clearly. In the interpersonal metafunction, the sentences mostly use </em>grandmother, she, <em>and other objects related to her as the subject. The use shows how meaningful the grandmother to her granddaugher, the narrator, is. Furthermore, the change of the tense also indicates the significant transformation of the grandmother. Finally, in the textual metafunction, though low, the use of marked themes emphasizes the life phases of the grandmother. The analysis of the text using SFG reveals the centrality of life and death in the story. The analysis of the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of the text reveals well the meaning and ideology which the story conveys. Death is only a transform of a life to another life.</em>

Abstract:
As student-leaders are tasked to manage their respective student-organizations and protect the interest of whom they represent, they are expected to be fluent communicators. Hence, they need to be conscious of the way they generate their utterances and text by considering appropriate language functions. This survey type of research determined the extent of utilization of language metafunctions in supervisory communication by teacher education student-leaders in a state university at Malvar Batangas, Philippines. By employing a researcher-made questionnaire as a primary tool for obtaining data and applying appropriate statistical tools, the study revealed that the respondents utilized the ideational language metafunction as they influenced their fellow members to actively participate in activities initiated by their respective organizations through citing favorable and positive personal experiences, the interpersonal metafunction as they listened willingly to the suggestions and complaints expressed by their colleagues during various fora, and the textual metafunction as they solicited in a friendly manner their colleagues’ suggestions for the improvement of their organizations during meetings. This study calls for enhanced supervisory communication skills among student-leaders through capacity building communication-related activities.

Abstract:
This article is a translation product oriented study designed to investigate a systemic way of analyzing the divergent of Ideational metafunction realizations in novel graphic translation using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The objectives of this study are to identify divergent of ideational realizations in the translation and what cause them. The study is a descriptive qualitative with an embedded case study. The linguistics data of this study included all the lingual units of translation namely clauses, phrases and words in the monologue and dialogue of the main character in graphic novel V for Vendetta: Europe After Reign by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. The content analysis is used to determine the divergent of Ideational metafunction meanings in translation by comparing the source texts and target texts. The results show the divergent of Ideational realizations in the translation occur in (1) experiential meaning (transitivity structure and lexical items) (2) logical meaning. The divergences in transitivity structure and lexical items are caused by idiom phrases, politeness strategy, and intertextuality. The logical subtype divert in clauses interdependency which caused by two factors namely (1) the translation not maintaining the structure of the source language by downgrading in clause rank and (2) the limitations of the speech balloon format.

Abstract:
It is believed that traditional grammar is no longer appropriate to teach students especially in developing their writing skill. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) which focuses on meaning and function behind language is now seen to be well-implemented. The study tried to analyse student’s piece of writing on one type of text in which Hotel Industry students as the sample of the study should master known as recount text. Purposive type of sampling was chosen since there was only one text analysed which was seen as the most problematic one. Content analysis as the implementation of qualitative research was chosen as the design of the study. The findings showed that the major problem student encountered mostly on grammatical structures in which there were found some errors on it. Regarding the three metafunctions, it was known that the students had been able to accomplish all criteria of recount text, such as using mostly material processes which deals with ideational metafunction, using correct tense and subject to fulfil the mood exists in interpersonal metafunction, and using reiteration and zigzag pattern as representation of textual metafunction. However, since there was problem to overcome, a strategy was proposed known as “POWER” which stands for Plan, Organise, Write, Edit, and Revise, which is hoped to help students developed a well-constructed text fulfilling all sine qua non attributes that recount text has.

Abstract:
This study reconsiders the place and nature of the logical metafunction in systemic theory. Halliday considers logical and experiential as subparts of the ideational metafunction, which he differentiates from the interpersonal and the textual, and he relates specific parts of the lexicogrammar to each metafunction, and each metafunction to a parameter of the context of situation. Here the proposal is to consider the logical component as an added function available for combination with each of the other three, and related equally to each of these, as well as to the field, tenor and mode of the context of situation. Logical meaning is considered independently from the strict structural constraints of recursion, parataxis and hypotaxis. Both projection and expansion are seen as multifunctional and as occurring at all grammatical ranks and at text level. Logical meaning is also seen in relational and existential processes, and as an extra unifying element in systems perceived as overlapping (modality and modulation, comparison and intensification).

Abstract:
AbstractThis article investigates the possibility to form determiner complexes in English nominal groups and the potential of leftward transfer of functional elements in nominal groups. The research finds that it is not possible to form hypotactic determiner complexes; rather there are hypotactic numeral complexes, hypotactic Epithet adjective complexes, hypotactic Classifier noun complexes and hypotactic Thing noun complexes, and the words for all the slots have the potential to form paratactic complexes. The corpus-based research confirms the potential of leftward transfer in nominal groups. Thereby, four types of shifts were identified: the shift from the Thing noun to the Classifier noun or adjective is a process of metaphorization from the group rank to the word rank; (2) the shift from the Classifier adjective to the Epithet2 adjective is a process of subjectification from the distinctive to the nondistinctive features of the Thing noun within the domain of ideational metafunction; (3) the shift from the Epithet2 adjective to the Epithet1 adjective is a process of subjectification from the domain of ideational metafunction to that of interpersonal metafunction; (4) the shift from the Epithet1 adjective to the post-Deictic adjective is a process of grammaticalization from the open-set attitude adjectives to the closed-set attitude adjectives.

The interrelation between verbal and image represented in a textbook is one of the prominent issues that should be taken into account. If the interrelation between these modes is presented in a textbook properly and aptly, students' outcomes of a particular material, such as phonics, may be entrenched and fostered. Thereby, this study aimed to scrutinize the interrelation between the verbal and image represented in the phonics material, which was to the best of the writer's knowledge concerning studies scrutinizing the phonics materials vis-à-vis multimodal text was still limited. Furthermore, a qualitative research method using content analysis was employed to investigate the analysis unit, namely the phonics material taken from one primary level EFL textbook. Besides, Royce's (1998, 2002, 2007) Intersemiotic Complementarity and Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) Grammar of Visual Design involving one of the metafunctions deriving from Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics, ideational metafunction was employed. The findings revealed that a multimodal text encompassing the phonic material was, in fact, had fruitful meanings manifested in various modes, and there was a synergy found between the visual and verbal meanings realized by the ideational intersemiotic complementarity.

Abstract:
Gender linguistics focuses on the diversity of male and female’s speech. In functional grammar, it is assumed that language expresses individuals’ worldview and ideology through the ideational metafunction. Considering gender and worldview, each individual uses a particular manner of expression which shows his/her thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The present study, focusing on the ideational metafunction, compares and explains the frequency and manner of using verbal processes such as “command and order”, “expressing emotions and feelings”, “swearing and insulting”, “damn and curse”, through considering the gender of the authors and the characters of their novels: Missing Soluch and Suvashun. The results indicated that the speaker and addressee’s gender are the most influential factors in verbal differences, which, by its own account, is affected by the atmosphere of the story. In fact, the power and the superior social status of men allow them to use more imperious, hostile, and impolite verbal processes. In addition, the feminine emotions and fragility, the fear raised from an inferior position in the community, and the cultural stereotypes dominating the setting of the story demanded the female characters to be obedient and silent, and sometimes use damn and curse.

Abstract:
According to Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) theory the structural shape of the clause in English is determined by the three metafunctions — ideational, interpersonal and textual (Halliday 1994:179). In Japanese, the situation is similar as far as ideational (Teruya 1998) and interpersonal (Fukui 1998) meanings are concerned. With respect to the textual metafunction, however, the situation appears to be different. Due to the presence of ellipsis, both anaphoric Subject ellipsis and formal exophoric Subject ellipsis (Hasan 1996), along with the operation of clause chaining, Japanese appears to organise textually over another kind of unit, the Theme unit. This paper will explore the Theme unit as it functions to organise discourse in Japanese, offering grammatical and semantic recognition criteria within a Systemic Functional theoretical framework. Justification for the theorisation of this textual unit will be presented together with a number of examples. In Japanese, the Theme unit is the unit within which Theme and Rheme unfold. Theme is realised by first position in the Theme unit, and the Theme unit can map onto clause simplexes, complexes, clauses within a complex and across sentences (in written texts). The paper will conclude with a discussion of the function of the Theme unit and the nature or status of the Theme unit within the SFL model of language, arguing that the notion is possibly applicable to the analyses of other languages, including English.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the diverse C-E translation versions of the Chinese civil code and intellectual property law. Under the guidance of systematic functional linguistics, this thesis uses metafuction theory as the main perspective and takes the field, tenor and mode characteristics of intellectual property law into consideration to analyze the translation versions so as to find the most aptly worded translation version which reveals the legislation intention and original context. Also, efforts are made to seek the equivalence between the source language and the target language in terms of ideational metafunction, interpersonal metafunction and textual metafuncion, thereby ensuring the accuracy of declaration of will and avoiding gross misunderstanding. Based on the comparative study of different translated versions, the thesis concludes that the translation of intellectual property legal articles should pay attention to the usage of legal professional words and model verbs and ensure the formalness, conciseness and readability.

Abstract:
Abstract Theme, the building block for the Textual Metafunction in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), is itself an element at the clause rank. Its function and application, however, can only be fully recognized in the unfolding discourse. This article extends multiple Theme to the discourse level and proposes the notion of multiple hyperTheme that exists beyond the clause, with a view to developing the system of Theme in SFL and strengthening its role in discourse analysis. The article begins with an overview of the historical development of Theme, primarily reflecting on hyperTheme initiated by Daneš (1974, Functional sentence perspective and the organization of the text. In Daneš František (ed.), Papers on functional sentence perspective, 106–128. The Hague: Mouton) and developed by Martin (1992a, English text: System and structure. Philadelphia: John Benjamins) and Martin and Rose (2003, Working with discourse: Meaning beyond the clause. London: Continuum). By redefining hyperTheme and suggesting that it should not just be confined to the ideational dimension, this article introduces multiple hyperTheme which may cover the three strands of meaning (ideational, interpersonal and textual), offering a more delicate system of hyperTheme in SFL. The complexities and delicacies of different elements within the category of multiple hyperTheme are illustrated in its various patterns such as Interpersonal ^ Ideational, Textual ^ Ideational, Textual ^ Interpersonal ^ Ideational, Textual ^ Textual/Interpersonal ^ Ideational and Interpersonal/Textual ^ Ideational. Furthermore, the subtle configuration of the interpersonal and the ideational meanings in one grammatical sentence may blur the distinction between multiple hyperTheme and simple hyperTheme, especially when there is no obvious textual element involved.

Abstract:
Textbooks have an essential function to guide students’ activities in learning English language and also to provide the materials for teachers in teaching English language. In a textbook, a text is also accompanied by images which can be used to explain the content of the text, or the function of the image is to make the text understandable for the readers. This study investigated visual metafunctions of the images in supporting linguistics metafunction of the texts in students’ textbook. The objectives of this study were to explain the representation of representational meanings of the images in supporting the ideational meanings of the texts. Using the framework of Grammar of Visual Design by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) and Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday (1994) and Eggins (2004), this study used discourse analysis as the research approach. The source was reading texts in English in Mind: Students’ Book on Culture in Mind sections. The objects of this study was reading texts which were supported by images. The units were clauses in reading texts and visual items, including vectors, colours, image acts, gazes, size of frames and social distance of the images. The findings revealed that the representational meanings of the images supported the ideational meanings of the texts because the images tried to give depiction of the verbal texts to make the readers could comprehend the texts easily. The presence of narrative representational meaning and the presence of material process inform the situation happened in the stories.

Abstract:
In her thought-provoking article, Aneta Pavlenko approaches emotion and emotion-laden words in the bilingual lexicon from an impressive number of different perspectives. This is particularly welcome, since most models of linguistic structure do not account for emotional meanings in a systematic way. One exception worth mentioning, however, is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL; Halliday, 1985/1994) with its broad division of functions into the textual, ideational and interpersonal metafunctions. Whereas the textual metafunction is concerned with the flow of information and the ideational with the construction of experience, the interpersonal function is concerned with interaction between people including the sharing of feelings. Recently, this last aspect has been developed more on the basis of SFL within Appraisal theory (Martin and White 2005), where attitudinal meanings are divided into Affect (the construal of emotion into the frame I feel (very) __), Judgment (social/moral evaluation of people) and Appreciation (aesthetic evaluation of things). The theory has primarily been applied to the development of the expression of feeling and evaluation in student writing in schools, based on qualitative analysis of corpora. The framework has also recently been applied to other languages than English as in Folkeryd (2006), who shows how the expression of affect and other evaluative resources are used in various story genres by Swedish students in grades 5, 8 and 11. The expression of attitudinal meanings turned out to be a problem characteristic of low-achieving students. This study includes bilingual students but they are not focused on in the published work.

Abstract:
This study takes a systemic functional multimodal social semiotic approach to the analysis and discussion of image and text relations in two sets of data. First, patterns of contextualisation of images and text in the online magazines Dabiq and Rumiyah produced by the Islamic extremist organisation which refers to itself as Islamic State (referred to here as ISIS) are examined. The second data set consists of a sample of texts from Western online news and blog sites which include recontextualisations of images found in the first data set. A sample of examples of the use and re-use of images is discussed in order to identify patterns of similarity and difference when images and text are recontextualised. It is argued that the ISIS material tends to foreground the interpersonal metafunction in combination with the textual metafunction (i.e. the stance towards the content and the organisation of the message for this purpose), while the other data set tends to foreground the ideational metafunction (the participants, processes and circumstances of what is being reported). These inferences indicate that further exploration of a larger data set is worth pursuing. Such studies would provide deeper insights helping to distinguish between online material which supports terrorism and that which opposes it, as well as facilitating the further development of multimodal social semiotic approaches to image and text relations.

Abstract:
This final project uses the grammar of the halliday functional because sequentially this text is studied in terms of the language the text functions, and the way the function relates to the context; which includes the context of the situation and the cultural context. This final project aims to present the context of the situation and the cultural context contained in the sonnet. This final project aims to describe the metafunction meaning contained in the sonnet, to describe the context of the situation reflected in the metafunction analysis, and finally to describe the cultural context. Data sources include words, phrases, sentences, and events in the sonnet. the following is the data collected. Read the text carefully and repeatedly, identify data related to the topic, classify the data into two groups, namely the meaning of metafunction, and the context of the situation and cultural context. The data were analyzed by determining the ideational, interpersonal and textual meanings, then this context as classified in the previous steps. Based on the analysis that has been studied, the context of the situation contained in the metafunction analysis shows: the field is a love poem with social activities that tells about a friend; the tenor is a connoisseur of love, a fan of its light, and on a metaphorical level, man to God; The mode is not a verbal-visual channel, it is text written to be said aloud with one-sided dialogue and an invisible recipient. In this cultural context, the aim is to express admiration, the structure begins with comparison, explanation and contradiction in the middle, and ends with affirmation, and the structure of the sonnet has linguistic characteristics indicating that the genre of this text is literary; poetry in sonnet form.

Abstract:
<p>The linguistic study of literature or critical analysis of literary discourse is no different from any other textual description; it is not a new branch or a new level or a new kind of linguistics but the application of existing theories and methods (Halliday, 2002). This study intends to determine how ideology or opinion is expressed in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and what kind of lexico-grammatical strategies are used in the first part of this novella to convey the author’s ideological meaning. By focusing on the lexico-grammatical choices in the transitivity system of the structure of the clauses, the researcher tries to shed light on the ideational meaning in the first section of the story. That is, the grammar of the clause as representation (transitivity patterns) which represents the encoding of experiential meanings: meaning about the world, about experience, about how we perceive and experience what is going on. By examining the transitivity patterns in text, we can explain how the field of situation is being constructed, i.e. we can describe what is being talked about and how shifts are achieved in the field. Both Halliday and Hassan have integrated theoretical statements with demonstrations of text analyses (Hassan, Matthiessen, &amp; Webster, 2005). In that spirit, the researcher here offers a textual demonstration of reading of a literary text. In order to do so, the researcher has identified metafunctional patterns of ideation found in the lexico-grammar of Joseph Conrad’s <em>Heart of Darkness </em>and has noted the author’s use of foregrounding against these patterns to contrast the racist and imperialistic ideologies being opposed to through the frame narration of the whole first part by Marlow as the chief character said to be Conrad’s own voice in the process of sailing and cruising on the Thames in a yawl by the name of Nellie.</p>

From the perspective of functional linguistics, this paper analyzes the features of the discourse pattern of political speeches from the perspective of critical discourse analysis, taking Biden’s 2020 election victory speech as a model, and explores how political speeches realize ideational functions in language through transitivity system, voice system and normalization system, and how they realize interpersonal functions through mood system and modality system, how to realize textual function through theme-rheme structure, information structure, and cohesion system. A political speaker's mastery of his own subjective and objective attitude, the shaping of the credibility and persuasiveness of his speech, the construction of one's own social identity, interpersonal relationship, and ideology can be embodied through the three meta-functions of language.

Abstract:
This text-oriented discourse analysis aims to evaluate and compare the language voiced by the two Islamic female clerics’ (Ustazah Aisah Dahlan and Mamah Dedeh) in their preaching as well as their stances towards the Discourse of Muslim Woman’s Body, Sexuality and Domestication posted on their affiliated Youtube accounts during this Covid-19 pandemic. The data (two video transcripts with the duration 09 minutes 04 seconds and 42 minutes and 54 seconds, respectively) were taken based on stratified purposeful sampling. Using transitivity system (ideational metafunction of language) postulated by M.A.K. Halliday(2014) and language evaluation theory (interpersonal metafunction of language) developed by Martin and White (2005), it was found that Aisah Dahlan’s preaching was dominated by attributive relational process and positive judgment in heteroglossic expressions to justify Muslim men’s attitudes and behaviors, whereas negative judgment in force expressions were deployed in discussing the Muslim woman’s body, sexuality, and domestication discourse. On the contrary, Mamah Dedeh’s preaching was dominated by the material process and positive judgement of sanction which indicates that husband and wife share equal responsibility in the household. Keywords: Ustazah, Text-Oriented Discourse Analysis, Muslim Woman’s Body, Islamic views on Sexuality, Domestication of woman, Transitivity analysis, appraisal analysis

Abstract:
The speech is delivered by Prince Harry. Three areas of SFG are applied to analyze the speech. The result shows that in terms of ideational metafunction, material, and mental processes are 2 highest occurrences in the speech. It happens since the speaker displays all his concrete actions including doing charity and meeting many people of his country. Through mental process, it shows that he involves his senses to communicate the language in his mind. Three types of mental process, namely cognition, affection, and perception are found in the speech indicating his empathy to the people towards the news of the royal split. The interpersonal metafunction shows that he does take sides on the wife and family. Using modality, he employs that the media power force creates huge speculations among the citizens. They accuse his wife for bringing bad impacts for him. By applying high commitment of modality, he reassures people that his wife is not the cause of the split. He also requests the people to love her as much as they love him. The modality shows that the split will not change the commitment he has for serving the country. The polarity displays a clarification that the decision of splitting is taken after long consideration. The personal pronoun ‘I’ shows that the speaker is the subject matter of the speech. The textual metafunction in the speech shows that unmarked theme deploys the idea that it is a declarative speech which functions to give information or clarification. The additional conjunction is used to explore detailed information people must know.

This research aimed to discover the realization of textual metafunction and to discover kinds of mood and theme types dominated in speech since the data itself was Donald Trump’s speech “Recognizing Jerusalem as Israel Capital”. This research employed a qualitative research method and content analysis approach. The data was obtained from the trusted website and the data itself was analyzed by using Halliday’s theory by considering the steps of data analysis proposed by Gay et al. As a result of the analysis, it was discovered that: (1) the realization of textual metafunction in Donald Trump’s speech was applied. 84 clauses found in Donald Trump’s speech, and each clause contained Theme and Rheme which carry the message told the listeners; (2) mood (theme in declarative clauses) were mostly dominated particularly unmarked theme, which had 44 clauses while marked theme 38 clauses. Otherwise, (theme in imperative clauses) were the lowest calculation, it was obtained 2 clauses from the total number of clauses. Meanwhile, (theme in interrogative clauses) was not found, yes or no as well as wh-question; theme types (ideational/topical theme was dominant), it was derived 57 clauses, the second was (textual theme), it was derived 25 clauses and the last was (interpersonal theme), it derived 2 clauses. To sum up, based on textual metafunction perspective, the speaker attempts to get the listeners’ attention to focus on the message of what is being said, and giving many statements to tell the listeners his recognition that Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Abstract:
The language of law is complex and needs to be investigated to facilitate its easy understanding. The present study addresses this need by analyzing a mini-corpus comprising two short texts taken from Pakistan's Code of Civil Procedure 1908 and the U.K.'s Civil Procedure Rules 1998 with Halliday's ideational metafunction, which is suited for analyzing procedural texts (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004). The study identified the transitivity patterns in the mini corpus. The findings showed simpler construction of processes in the U.K. civil procedure text sample as compared to Pakistan's Civil Procedure text sample, whereas the analysis showed a similar complex construction of nominal phrases in both texts. The study is expected to contribute toward an easy understanding of legal language. It is also hoped that this study will promote further research in this important area with pedagogical implications.

Abstract:
This article is a comparison on the recreating of the image of a “chaste wife” in two English translations of Chinese ancient poem Jie Fu Yin from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The linguistic choices of the poet and translators are measured from transitivity under experiential meaning of ideational metafunction. It has found that Hart tends to follow a creative and imaginative translation, thus creating a more enthusiastic even passionate image of a young “chaste wife” in a direct and explicit way, while Fletcher presents a clam and tender image of a mature “chaste wife” in a relatively implicit way. Besides, both translations reproduce the theme about love, but losing the political theme. It is argued that in translation, the lexico-grammatical choices will lead to variation in meanings and recreate different images of a same character, and the seemingly unconscious choices can be better understood based on the context of translation.

Abstract:
The study was a linguistic examination of the use of lexical cohesive devices in Ngugi Wa Thiong ’O’s Decolonising the Mind- an autobiography. The study was aimed at revealing how Ngugi - an African L2 writer, deployed lexical cohesive devices to achieve cohesion and coherence and how this has contributed to the meaning of his non- fictional essay. The study was guided by the theoretical framework of Halliday’s tripartite metafunctions of language: the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual, with closer inclination to the textual metafunction that deals with text creation. Cohesion is understood in this study as a textual strategy deployed in language use to unify sentences into a text (a unified whole), that renders the speech or writing both readable and meaningful. A total of 29 excerpts, selected from relevant sections of the essay were descriptively analysed. Our analysis revealed that Ngugi made effective use of lexical cohesive devices to tie his text together, thereby succeeded in passing his message clearly to his readers. Our findings also showed a preponderant use of reiteration (near synonym) - 13 times, and repetition -8 times, by the writer, probably to achieve emphasis. Other lexical devices deployed by the writer to achieve various textual and communicative functions include: antonyms 4 times; superordinate/hyponym, 2 times; and complementaries and co-hyponym, 1 each, in crafting his essay, in which he tells a real- life story of his people, his culture and his heritage. Ngugi, by his effective use of cohesive devices along paradigmatic and syntagmatic axis, has demonstrated that an African writer can also, through the medium of biographical writing, project, not only his ideology, but also the exultation of his people, his culture and his inheritance by a skillful and near – native use of the English language. The study made a case for a systematic teaching of cohesive devices at all levels of education as that will improve reading and comprehension and the aver all communicative competence of L2 learners of English.

The interest of linguistics to criticize how its usage affects the environment triggers the development of ecolinguistics. Saphir distinguishes three ecological territories: physical, economic and social. Ecological domains are exercised to present Yogyakarta on Wonderful Indonesia, the official website of Indonesian tourism. This paper observed the employment of clauses of Yogyakarta text found in the Destination Highlight on the front page of the website at www.indonesia.travel on March 31, 2019. The method applied is ecolinguistics by exercising the ideational metafunction of language proposed by Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to figure out how the website portrays the real world of Yogyakarta environment seen from the choice of process, participants and circumstances. The analysis reveals that social environment dominates the website, meaning that Yogyakarta is advertised as a carrier and attribute in terms of its culture and value. Yogyakarta, is attached to the attributes as a city with respect for values. This makes Twitter an ideal platform to discuss ideas and generate conversations around particular issues. This article explores and compares the lexicogrammatical choices made by President Donald Trump and Joko Widodo in a selection of their tweets. Guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this article explains the stylistic differences and their implications in the three metafunctions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual, including the language used for evaluation drawn from the Appraisal system network. The study reveals that Trump’s language is more spoken-like than that of Jokowi’s. Trump also employs various appraisal strategies to negatively evaluate his opponents and counter various adverse accusations addressed to him. Jokowi, on the other hand, uses more abstract written-like language and use more positive appraisal strategies mainly addressed to his government programs and plans amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The result of the study reveals that different individual lexicogrammatical choices can generate diverse representations and images.

Abstract:
This article investigates the application of Halliday’s theory of transitivity to analyse the verbal structures of an abridged text in the form of a graphic novel. Having been condensed from the original classic Journey to the Centre of the Earth (JttCotE) by Jules Verne, the present study examines the link between these structures and how they represent the original text. The focus of the analysis concentrates on the verbal text contained in speech bubbles and caption boxes; common characteristics of the comics medium. Based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework of the ideational metafunction, this article discusses how linguistic formations are constructed and construed through transitivity in an abridged text. In addition, the analysis also looks into how the authors have adapted the original text into a graphic novel through the adoption of a few specific Processes. As such an exploration is limited, the current study fills the gap in this area. The analysis of data indicates that careful employment of linguistic choices forms the core of the novel which inherently is also supported through its visual representations. The results reveal that Material Processes are the most prominent in this adapted version of the novel, followed by Relational and Behavioural Processes respectively. This study highlights how linguistic choices support the original text, though an abridged version, specifically in the panels of Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The findings can serve to understand how authors construct their versions of abridged texts to adhere to the original text.

Abstract:
This research is about the use of verbal language and visual image to realize the metafunctions in student’s textbook. In order to see the process of meaning making in multimodal text, the researcher analyses the implementation of ideational, interpersonal, and textual meaning. The data was taken from conversation sections in Interchange Student’s Book 1. It consists of verbal language in the form of dialogues and visual image in the form of pictures. There were 16 conversation sections chosen from 16 chapters in the book. This research uses multimodal discourse analysis; using three instruments to classify the data. The checklists are from Eggins (2004) about metafunctions in verbal language, Van Leeuween (2006) about metafunctions in visual image, and Royce (2007) about the relations in verbal language and visual image. In ideational meaning, the result of the study shows that verbal language which dominates the conversation is the material proces; while in visual image, the reactional process is the highest number of process happens. Thus, the verbal-visual relations in ideational meaning found are collocation and repetition. Furthermore, the result in interpersonal meaning finds out that the most common verbal language used is statement; while in visual image, the medium shot is mostly found. Thus, the verbal-visual relation in interpersonal meaning realized through reinforcement of address is interaction between represented participant and represented participant. Moreover, in textual meaning, the result of verbal language shows that the most common used theme is topical theme; while in visual image, the information value is mostly left-right. Thus, the verbal-visual relation in textual meaning shown in reading path is left-right.

Abstract:
This chapter takes note of the longstanding orientation Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to discourse studies before moving to a more detailed and selective presentation of current developments in SFL with respect to discourse models, developing research methodologies, and applications to different domains. The reinterpretation of cohesion as discourse semantics (identification, negotiation, conjunction, and ideation) is reviewed with respect to metafunctions (textual, interpersonal, and ideational). This work on texture is then related to social context through the register variables tenor, field and mode alongside genre. The chapter then reviews recent SFL-inspired research that applies these models to analysis of discourse across languages, modalities of communication, and domains. Work done on school and workplace discourse has raised new questions about appropriate units of discourse structure and their relationship to register analysis. It is predicted that some of these questions may be answered by the development of improved software for discourse analyses affording greater specificity in mapping the relationships among genres.

Abstract:
AbstractThree metafunctions of meaning in Systemic Functional Linguistics are interpersonal meaning, textual meaning, and ideational meaning. In ideational meaning, it is realized through the transitivity system (Halliday, 2004). As for this study, it focuses on the analysis of processes type classification and what type of process that dominant in Bandung hotel slogans based on Halliday’s theory about transitivity. To present the findings, a qualitative descriptive study is applied as the research design. The documentation method is used to collect 36 Bandung hotel slogans. It appears that the relational process is the most dominant in the hotel slogan clauses in order to represent their brand to affect the customer’s mind.

Abstract:
The study attempted to explain fundamentals of Systemic Functional Theory as textual analytical instruments. The basis was to demonstrate the applications of Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual Metafunctions as alternative semiotic resources that provide composite meaning potential to the structure of the clause. For illustration, six clauses in the advert of Premium Pension Limited were used as textual elements which the three metafunctions were applied. The study revealed conditionality, sensitizationality, judgmentality as well as integrity as the nuggets of the message. In addition, the ad tends to propound solutions to the financial security of the future of the people. The solution is for the recipients to negotiate and begin savings with Premium Pension Limited whose concern is how to care for the people in their old age. Above all, the study concluded that Halliday’s theory as a very practicable tool of textual analysis for researchers.

Abstract:
This study applied a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) model to explore how 27 first-year university students in two different English proficiency groups improved their lexicogrammatical choices and metafunctions for writing analytical exposition essays during a 15-week course. To explore how &ldquo;the teaching learning cycle&rdquo; influences students&rsquo; understanding of the target genre essay, a survey was conducted; furthermore, to explore changes in students&rsquo; understanding of metafunctions (ideational, experiential, and textual meanings) of the target genre essay, students&rsquo; pre- and post-essays were scored by raters using the SFL framework rubric. Then, six students with lower rating scores at the pre-essay stage from both English proficiency groups were selected to explore how they progressed differently in the target linguistic resources. The results demonstrated that applying an SFL framework of writing assessment to English students&rsquo; understanding of essay writing can be used to explicitly examine their improvements.

Abstract:
Language is something learnt from the earliest stage of human life that continues until adulthood. Therefore, to further learn about how important literature in early stages of human life is, an approach towards children’s literature is needed. This study aims to analyze a work of children’s literature with a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. Ideational, Textual, and Interpersonal meanings are analyzed from the short story “Jack and the Beanstalk” accessed from https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/short-stories/jack-and-the-beanstalk. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative method. The story is broken down into individual clauses which are then analyzed using SFL in tables as shown below. The result shows that the majority of the text used material process and topical unmarked theme, which indicates that the story is simple but concise. The story itself, although simple, tells a magical fantasy tale, which stimulates children’s imagination to the fullest.
