Abstract:
Asthma is characterized by recurrent episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. It is usually caused by a combination of complex and incompletely understood environmental and genetic interactions. We obtained gene expression data with high-throughput screening and identified biomarkers of children's asthma using bioinformatics tools. Next, we explained the pathogenesis of children's asthma from the perspective of gene regulatory networks: DAVID was applied to perform Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enriching analysis for the top 3000 pairs of relationships in differentially regulatory network. Finally, we found that HAND1, PTK1, NFKB1, ZIC3, STAT6, E2F1, PELP1, USF2, and CBFB may play important roles in children's asthma initiation. On account of regulatory impact factor (RIF) score, HAND1, PTK7, and ZIC3 were the potential asthma-related factors. Our study provided some foundations of a strategy for biomarker discovery despite a poor understanding of the mechanisms underlying children's asthma.

Abstract:
The study area falls in the mesoseismal zone of 1905 Kangra earthquake (Mw 7.8). To identify appropriate trenching site for paleoseismic investigation and to understand the faulting geometry, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey was conducted across a Hajipur Fault (HF2) scarp, a branching out fault of Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT) in a foot hill zone of NW Himalaya. Several 2D and 3D profiles were collected using 200 MHz antenna with SIR 3000 unit. A 2D GPR profile collected across the HF2 scarp revealed prominent hyperbolas and discontinuous-warped reflections, suggesting a metal pipe and a zone of deformation along a low-angle thrust fault, respectively. The 3D profile revealed remarkable variation in dip of the fault plane and pattern of deformation along the strike of the fault.

Abstract:
Adults are recommended to engage in 150 min of moderate (MPA) to vigorous (VPA) aerobic physical activity per week, with the public health message of obtaining 3000 steps in 30 min. There is a paucity of research on step rate thresholds that correspond to absolute MVPA (moderate = 3 METs, vigorous = 6 METs) with no research evaluating adult relative MVPA (moderate = 40% VO2max, vigorous = 60% VO2max). Anthropometric differences also influence intensity-related step rate thresholds. The purpose of this study was to identify step rates across a range of walking intensities so that mathematical models incorporating anthropometric factors could be used to identify individualized MVPA step rate thresholds. Forty-three adults (25♀; age = 39.4 ± 15.2 years) completed a staged treadmill walking protocol with pedometers and indirect calorimetry: six-minutes at 2.4, 3.2, 4.0, 5.6, 6.4, 7.2 km/h. Mathematical modelling revealed absolute and relative MPA step rate thresholds of ~100 steps/minute (spm) and ~125 spm, respectively. VPA corresponded to step rates of ~133 spm and ~139 spm for absolute and relative thresholds respectively. The current public message of 3000 steps in 30 min is valid for absolute MPA. However, VPA is achieved at higher thresholds than previously reported, more than 130 spm for healthy adults.

Coelho, Mafalda Maria Pereira. "Avaliação do conhecimento atual dos profissionais de saúde oral quanto ao diagnóstico do cancro oral." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10284/5390.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Currently oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Its high rate of morbidity and consequent mortality, is related with the detection of this disease already in advanced stages of malignancy. In this context, it ends up leading to increased complications in treatment that becomes more aggressive according to the degree of malignancy. Therefore early diagnosis along with suitable treatment is the fundamental key to control the disease. Due to this reality, health professionals have a key role in early detection of potential malignant or malignant lesions making it a priority goal in health. To evaluate this kind of lesions, the definitive histopathologic diagnosis provided by conventional biopsy, still remains the crucial method of choice for health professionals, although new non-invasive techniques have emerged as auxiliary diagnosis methods. Objective: This paper aims to obtain a detailed knowledge of oral cancer, including its main particularities and specificities in order to obtain an early detection and consequently a favorable prognosis. It has also have been conducted a study that collected information on the general knowledge of portuguese dentists and stomatologists regarding oral cancer, the use of auxiliary diagnostic tools nowadays available, as well as data collection concerning the clinical performance protocol when suspected potentially malignant or malignant lesions. Materials and Methods: This study was based on the keywords and outlined specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, in order to raise and discuss as much information about this great association between oncology and dentistry, which is oral cancer. In order to meet the stated goals, it was associated with this monography a quantitative study of a descriptive and cross-sectional type. Data collection was conducted through a survey involving 324 dental professionals. The survey, with a total of twenty-one questions, aimed to collect information on the general knowledge of dentists regarding oral cancer. After data collection, these were processed and analyzed using computer programs such as Microsoft Office Excel (2010) and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS IBM © © Statistics) vs. 22.0 for Windows. Results: The selected sample has demonstrated the necessary and basic knowledge when approached about the subject, consciously being alert if suspected a potentially malignant or malignant lesion. About 78% of respondents prefer to refer the patient when faced with a suspected lesion. Regarding the individuals that perform biopsy, 66.7% prefer the excisional technique. 96% approaches other colleagues when suspects of a malignant lesion. Most professionals (88.9%) reported ever used other auxiliary methods in addition to biopsy. Of the 11.1% who admit to having used an auxiliary diagnostic tool, 58.8% indicates the toluidine blue as the preferred method. 27.2% of professionals do not consider the biopsy as a fundamental element. Discussion and Conclusion: Through the research made, it was found that it is essential to have knowledge of signs and symptoms and provide screening in routine consults aiming for an early detection of potentially malignant or malignant lesions. By general consensus of those surveyed, it was found that the clinical history, clinical examination and biopsy are the most effective methods and commonly used to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with this disease. Still, 27.2% of the respondents do not consider the biopsy as a fundamental element, which is concerning. However it was corroborated that the majority of respondents although theoretically able, prefer to refer instead of performing biopsy.

Abstract:
This article employs a stripped-down model of a state: a ruler, an apparatus of rule, a subject population, and external interactions of various sorts, from trade, diplomacy, and mass migration to war. It aims to identify common properties and systematic variations among states, including their involvement in war. First, using the example, of Tiglath-pileser I (ruler of Assyria, 1114–1076 bce), it places Middle Eastern empires in a much wider range of states across the entire world from the state's first emergence toward 3000 bce to the present. The rest of the discussion proceeds through four stages: an analysis of how states maintain themselves, a closer look at war's place in state transformation, a comparison among major types of state, and reflections on states and war in recent world history. Whether the states of today will break that interdependence is one of the day's most pressing political questions.

The purpose of the research is to identify the ethical and axiological perspectives that underlie the process of social construction of the probation practice, and also aim at the ways in which the theoretical perspectives that underlie practice become constituents of the discourse of probation counsellors. The probation practice in Romania derived from social work practice with deviant groups. In the probation practice a large amount of case management instruments are still connected with social work practices. The results lead to the construction of a model of probation that integrates restorative elements with the restitutive ones, but also with elements of utilitarian justice, or centred on humanistic values. The ethical values identified as being constitutive for this model are co-responsibility, dignity and justice.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the role of diligence-based strategies for the better development of resource orchestration practices in restaurant enterprises. Considering restaurant operations as a unit of analysis, the researchers identify twelve diligence-based strategies behind the formation of the resource orchestration process of the case restaurants. The findings develop the literature on strategy as practice by building theory on how resource orchestration across a bundle of diligence-based strategies stimulates the synergies during the exploration and exploitation of business model. Managers can gain insights for determining the strategies from the research technique the researchers propose; the technique enables managers to be aware of how diligence-based strategies can create synergy during the resource orchestration. Therefore, restaurant enterprises that strive to develop strategic activities in their resource orchestration process are more likely to develop core capabilities and competitive advantage over their rivalry.

Abstract:
Food production and consumption have shown significant changes in the recent past. These phenomena reflect on the restaurant industry, which is a major setting for food consumption. Restaurant customers now are more concerned about their health, more value conscious, digitally involved, demanding for more convenient and individualized service, and above all not only expect a meal but a “unique experience” from a restaurant. All these factors present challenges for businesses and oblige them to adapt their strategies and policies accordingly. Restaurant characteristics affecting customer choice is an extensively researched subject. The current trends shaping customers' lifestyles and preferences have made it necessary to update and make modifications to the restaurant choice criteria used in prior research. Restaurant managers also must identify the new customer needs and expectations. Up-to-date research will provide valuable information to businesses in this area to adapt their strategies accordingly and ensure the sustainability of their business.

Academic plagiarism is regarded as a serious offense and much effort in the past has been devoted to build stand-alone plagiarism detection systems for a specific language. This paper proposes a new information retrieval-based plagiarism detection algorithm that handles multilingual documents and enables seamless integration with learning management systems. The proposed algorithm employs information retrieval and sequence matching techniques to identify suspected plagiarized sentences and permits parametric control to reduce both false-positive and false-negative results. The full-featured implementation, called iChecker, not only could quickly identify suspected plagiarized works but also ease academics' effort to evaluate the severity of the offence by a quantified measure. Currently iChecker is adopted by over 300 courses (with some having several hundred of students) and has obtained satisfactory results. During 2012 to 2016, iChecker has processed and verified a total of 276,943 documents in English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese text.

Content formats that had highest hit rate with accessed mean rate above 300 (discussion forums, video clips, and graphics) are discussed. The study revealed that learning becomes interactive and effective when a video is presented in the style of hypermedia. Learners' perceptions rating indicated that learners perceived the video format as satisfactory, helpful in knowledge retention, motivational and an enhancement of learning. Available online authoring tools and supportive open content sites are identified and educators are encouraged to develop digital content in video format and disseminate them for teaching and learning.

Abstract:
For the last few years school teachers in Malaysia have access to ICT tools in their schools. However, these tools are used mostly for record keeping and word processing purposes. An in-depth study to identify the problems of using ICT in the classroom is currently being done to elicit information concerning the needs of secondary school teachers in the Northern region of Malaysia. This research-in-progress paper discusses the needs analysis phase of the study. The teachers were asked to identify their needs in becoming competent users of ICT in the classroom; the result from this study will be used to create specific topics that will be made accessible on-line to be shared by teachers in Malaysia. The ultimate aim of this study is to develop reusable instructional material in the form of learning objects.

Eckert, Lothar. "High Cycle Fatigue Cracks at Radial Fan Impellers Caused by Aeroelastic Self-Excited Impeller Vibrations: Part I — Case History, Root Cause Analysis, Vibration Measurements." In ASME 1999 Design Engineering Technical Conferences. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc99/vib-8261.

Abstract:
Abstract Hydrogen-cooled two-pole turbogenerators are equipped with one single-stage radial fan for cooling gas ventilation. The impellers with outer diameters of up to 1.5 m operate with 3000 rpm or 3600 rpm. High cycle fatigue cracks have occurred at two radial fan impellers operated at 3000 rpm. An extensive root cause analysis was performed to identify the cause of these cracks. Impeller vibration measurements in the generator unit finally allowed the successful identification of the root cause. The very strong impeller vibrations were caused by an aeroelastic self-excitation mechanism. By modification of the stationary impeller surrounding the aeroelastic self-excitation was eliminated.

Abstract:
Names are important in many societies, even in technologically oriented ones which use e.g. ID systems to identify individual people. There are many elements of personal names which vary in different cultures. Names such as surnames are the most important as they are used in many processes, such as identifying of people and genealogical research. On the other hand variation of names can be a major problem for the identification and search for people, e.g. web search or security reasons. We show name variations for different cultures to guide the implementation of a rule based naming system, currently worked out for Thai names. We characterize the LIG (Levenshtein, Index of Similarity Group (called ISG), and Guth) algorithms which help to find reasonable variants of names and use an ontology of names to capture the meaning of the variants which are based on Thai naming methodologies and rules. A further benefit of this process is an optimized name searching.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the amount of information grows in an exponential way, mainly because of technological advances in media. This scenario claims for the development of different skills in order to increase learning abilities, making them personal and customizable. Such factor is significant in a changing society, which implies in a range of mechanisms which would allow to identify, in a non-intrusive way, which learning style some specific student would prefer to perform in order to build knowledge from some learning object under a learning context. This requires defining some strategies in order to recognize adult learner’s learning styles for some specific learning context. This work is based on theoretical references of Felder, Kolb and Gardner, proposing the implementation of a metadata annotation to identificate prime learning styles that are present in specific learning objects. This classification constitutes a starting point to recover learning objects from a repository according to apprentice’s profile and experiences. As a result, the effectiveness of the use of learning objects will be improved.

Abstract:
One of the important issues to conduct the damage detection of a structure using vibration-based damage detection (VBDD) is not only to detect the damage but also to locate and quantify the damage. In this paper a systematic way of damage assessment, including identification of damage location and damage quantification, is proposed by using output-only measurement. Four level of damage identification algorithms are proposed. First, to identify the damage occurrence, null-space and subspace damage index are used. The eigenvalue difference ratio is also discussed for detecting the damage. Second, to locate the damage, the change of mode shape slope ratio and the prediction error from response using singular spectrum analysis are used. Finally, to quantify the damage the RSSI-COV algorithm is used to identify the change of dynamic characteristics together with the model updating technique, the loss of stiffness can be identified. Experimental data collected from the bridge foundation scouring in hydraulic lab was used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods. The computation efficiency of each method is also discussed so as to accommodate the online damage detection.

Abstract:
Article A-3000 of Appendix A in ASME Section XI provides methods to calculate stress intensity factors that are used in Section XI linear elastic fracture mechanics based flaw evaluation procedures. The ASME Section XI Working Group on Flaw Evaluation has been in the process of rewriting Article A-3000 of Appendix A. The rewrite of Article A-3000 includes implementation of closed-form equations for stress intensity factor influence coefficients for cylinder geometries. Closed-form relations for stress influence coefficients G0 and G1 for axial flaws on the outside surface in cylinders were recently developed and implemented into the 2017 Edition of ASME Section XI Appendix A. The closed-form equations were implemented with one restriction on the application related to very long flaws. This restriction was taken as an interim approach to addressing a technical concern from the US NRC staff. NRC staff had technical concern on the large percentage fitting errors for the G1 influence coefficients at surface point for some very long flaws. An action was assigned within the ASME Section XI Working Group on Flaw Evaluation to investigate the accuracy of surface point G values for very long flaws. The intent of the investigation is to provide technical justification for using the closed-form equations with no restriction and to identify any issues in the source data or during the fitting process. This paper describes current results from this ongoing investigation.

Abstract:
To localize small damage from mode shapes, the polynomial annihilation edge detection method has been proposed and demonstrated its effectiveness on different types of structural components [7]. However, much computational effort involved in this approach lowers the damage detection speed. To alleviate this difficulty, in this paper, we improve the approach by first using the divided difference approach to identify the region(s) in which jump discontinuities are located, and then only applying the polynomial annihilation method to points in the identified region. In this way, the computational burden of this approach is significantly relieved, while the accuracy is still maintained. The improved approach has been validated by numerical simulations on a cable-stayed bridge model. This approach only requires post-damage mode shapes.

In ASME 2019 14th International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2019-3003.

Abstract:
Abstract High-performance composites are widely used in industry because of specific mechanical properties and lightweighting opportunities. Current automation solutions to manufacturing components from prepreg (pre-impregnated precursor material) sheets are limited. Our previous work has demonstrated the technical feasibility of a robotic cell to automate the sheet layup process. Many decisions are required for the cell to function correctly, and the time necessary to make these decisions must be reduced to utilize the cell effectively. Robot placement with respect to the mold is a significant and complex decision problem. Ensuring that robots can collaborate effectively requires addressing multiple constraints related to the robot workspace, singularity, and velocities. Solving this problem requires developing computationally efficient algorithms to find feasible robot placements in the cell. We describe an approach based on successive solution refinement strategy to identify a cell design that satisfies all constraints related to robot placement.

Brophy, Kenny, and Alison Sheridan, eds. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.
