Full textThe purpose of this research work is to demonstrate through academic texts and scientific arguments, the relationship that exists between rural tourism in Amazonian indigenous communities and local identity. Likewise, the methodologies used were; the bibliographic review of academic articles, scientific articles, books, theses and technical publications based on indigenous rural tourism. Likewise, it is considered that tourism affects the Amazonian indigenous communities in different aspects, whether in social relations, adaptation and autonomy of the inhabitants. However, rural tourism manages to attract foreign tourists who obtain economic benefits, but also social disadvantages, such as cultural loss and deterioration of identity. Likewise, it was identified that rural tourism can intervene in a positive way with respect to the territories of indigenous communities, since it can reduce the risk implied by extractive and predatory activities of natural resources, which with tourism would be able to conserve. However, there are also disadvantages that could impact the environment if the implementation of the rural tourism activity is not developed in an adequate way, such as; the destruction of the natural habitat of endemic species, which generates their migration. Finally, after demonstrating the relationship between rural tourism in Amazonian indigenous communities and its influence on identity, it is intended to recommend preventive actions that protect tangible and intangible heritage.

Latorre, Tomas Sara. "Struggles over accumulation by environmental dispossession in Ecuador." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/129123.
Full textThis dissertation constitutes both a macro and a micro analysis of resistance struggles against environmental dispossession in Ecuador during the globalization period. This is a topic of current relevance due to the massive increase of accumulation by appropriation on a world-scale, and especially in the global South, occurring during this phase of global capitalism. The macro perspective is intended to depict a broad picture of the nature and dynamics of the intertwined processes of accumulation by dispossession and the resulting contested collective actions against it. This approach to the topic apprehends the underlying common structural processes across these diverse place-based yet transnationalized cases of conflicts on resource extraction, infrastructures and waste disposal (64 in total). In turn, the micro perspective aims to analyze in depth one particular type of dispossession and resistance process. In particular, it focuses on the political strategy implemented by the mangrove gatherers’ movement to struggle against the expansion of the shrimp-farming industry in Ecuador. Precisely, it pays attention to a particular element of this social movement: the articulation of a political subject, its politics of representation and its evolution over time. In 2007, this social movement defined itself as “Ancestral Peoples of the Mangrove Ecosystem-PAEM (its Spanish acronym)” and, consequently, began to frame its environmental justice demands on a novel ethnic-based discourse. From a theoretical point of view, this work combines a Political Ecology and Socio-Metabolic approach with concepts taken from Political Economy, Social Movement Theory, and Ethno-racial Identity Politics literature. In turn, from a methodological point of view, it adopts a qualitative perspective based on anthropological-based field research. My objective is to enter into a dialogue between the particular and the general. In other words, to grasp the richness and relevance of this particular political subject without renouncing to study the global processes that have shaped it, as well as other similar cases occurring in the same country and beyond. In this sense, this thesis makes a significant theoretical contribution to the Ethno-racial Identity Politics literature, particularly to the field of indigeneity with special reference to Latin America but also to studies on Environmental Conflicts and Environmental Justice worldwide.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to reconstruct and make an issue of the different meanings that the citizens elaborate regarding the water crisis in the city of Copiapó, in the north of Chile. For this reason, what people say and do about this environmental problem was analyzed, reflecting on its social impacts and how these social practices contribute both to changes and to the maintenance of this situation. At the same time, how this adverse environmental context affects the construction of identity and relationships of power was investigated. Copiapó, capital of the Atacama region, has desert climate. Nevertheless, historically it has had enough water to maintain a growing population and various economic activities. However, the situation has undergone a significant change in the last decades, due to an accelerated urban and industrial growth that has not had a correct city planning, social and environmental projection, generating a current and notorious lack of water. The city, for approximately 20 years, has been suffering what has been called a "water crisis" that affects and confronts different social and economic sectors, in competition with natural resources. The methodological procedure used consisted of an ethnographic approach in which several techniques of data production were triangulated: documentary analysis, participant observation and in-depth interviews. The local press was reviewed, relevant actors from the context were contacted and different social practices associated with water use were observed and analyzed. Likewise, in order to elucidate some controversies regarding the subject of study, the Chilean Water Code and its current reform were reviewed. The different types of data were analyzed as a whole according to the methodological scheme proposed by the grounded theory, and later, with the discourse analysis the interpretive repertoires of the interviews were examined. The first analysis made it possible to understand the main meanings that are built around the water problem; while the second one, helped to contextualize the use of these meanings around repertoires with different functions. This analytical procedure favored an "intersubjective validation" between analysis techniques. The results of this study show how an environmental problem is differently experienced by the inhabitants of the city, according to their discursive and social positioning, conditioning social practices and the meanings elaborated around it. In addition, the results allow understanding how water scarcity shapes the identity of citizens, for example related, among other things, with loss. Based on these findings, an interpretative theoretical model was developed; that explains how the power relations of certain social structures construct discourses regarding the issue not to lose the symbolic capital they possess. These discourses enter into dialoguewith (interact) the agency and the powers of the people; that construct their identities and different versions of the environmental problem from the adaptation to the abjection of these discourses.

Abstract: Conflicts within the urban environment have been hailed as a major challenge to the metropolitan governance, mainly due to the absence of channels enabling the legitimation of strategies and tools to help overcome the intra-metropolitan inequalities and reach agreements, especially in federalist countries like Brazil. However, some institutions have implemented new arrangements among political economic and social actors, which enable the achievement of an environmental nature of agreements between the municipalities that are intermediary spatialities - between the state and municipality - as the metropolitan areas. These arrangements seek to promote the development and/or quality of life of a given region and are structured around common interests that are specific to municipalities which constitute this same region, and may in some cases stimulate the creation of an environmental identity. Finally, based on the assumption that the institutions responsible for creating/expanding the channels of governance on environmental issues can identify or build environmental metropolitan identities, and that the existence of a specific environmental identity for each region results in diverse models of governance for a same environmental issue between different regions, the paper investigates the existence of environmental identity in metropolitan regions and their influence on the governance of urban environmental issues and on the environmental quality of these regions. To search for evidence to answer the questions proposed, a methodology developed from concepts such as urbanization, metropolization, society of risk/socio-environmental vulnerability, social capital, was applied to two metropolitan regions of São Paulo and corresponding institutions. The results allowed to partially answer questions, however, they point out new perspectives to the study of metropolitan governance in environmental issues through awareness/identification/construction of identities

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present study discusses the relationships between culture and development and the centrality of social actor formation in this process. The goal is to investigate the relationship between culture and environmental conservation focusing in the process of identity construction through environmental education in the settlement of Santo Antônio das Brancas, located in Agua Fria-GO, a located in the vicinity of Brasília-DF and Chapada dos Veadeiros-GO . As a model study adopted the action research carried out in four stages, the first, qualitative and quantitative occurred through using questionnaires, structured interviews and organizing meetings developed from participatory techniques. The second step, qualitative, focused on the collective definition of the research purpose and action through meetings with participatory approach. The third step, qualitative, was through the development of actions using stimulated symbolic interactionism. In the fourth step, the results were appropriated and evaluated through the dynamics of focus group . The results show that is possible reframe the social and environmental relationships that shape our nation and world perception through an educational process composed of reflective experience. It is concluded that the educational process encompasses a contradiction: to be political space or be training area for the political act, a contradiction that will reflect in our different ways of apprehending reality. It is, therefore, a study on the influence of the construction of cultural identities on the sustainability of local development.

Full textThe accelerated growth of Internet-based business increase significantly the need for mechanisms that can guarantee the data confidentiality, providing tools for authenticity and non-repudiation users in any medium of communication, even with computer resources becoming increasingly scarce, eg into a cell phone. This paper describes an encryption scheme that uses personal data for key generation and encryption, called the Identity Based Encryption, without need for a digital certificate. Various encryption schemes, signature, key agreement are shown, and its main characteristics, operational differences and their respective relevant aspects of security. Some aplicabilities such as encrypted data search, for example, are implemented, for better understanding of the operations and stages involved. The comparative computataional costs of operations highlight the Barreto et al. (2005) signature scheme and McCullagh e Barreto (2004b) key agreement scheme. They are also described, the prerequisites of an Identity-based cryptography environment, which allows to perform the operations of encryption, signing and key agreement with lower computational cost possible.
