Abstract Manufacturing companies must prioritize resource efficiency to remain competitive in the face of increasing demand for goods. Linear economic models, such as the ‘Take-Make-Dispose’ paradigm, are no longer adequate for meeting the demands of modern society, ecology, and regulation. The circular economy offers a resource-efficient alternative. In the circular economy, Re-Assembly is a promising strategy within this framework, involving industrial reprocessing of serial products to extend their lifecycle. However, the absence of optimized product designs for reprocessing hinders widespread adoption and economic viability of Re-Assembly processes. Therefore, integrated development across product design, production, and Re-Assembly is crucial to address this challenge. To achieve economic viability, it is necessary to evaluate costs throughout the product lifecycle. To enable companies to make informed decisions regarding the Re-Assembly process, a continuous cost assessment supported by sophisticated cost models is necessary. This paper presents a comprehensive cost model tailored to assess the economic feasibility of industrial Re-Assembly processes. The relevant cost drivers and necessary resources for the reprocessing are identified and used as input for the subsequently developed process-oriented cost model. This cost model is transferred into an optimization model. The model aims to enhance the sustainability and profitability of circular economy practices.

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the question of why environmentally conscious individuals find it difficult to behave in a correspondingly eco-friendly way. This phenomenon is referred to in the literature as the “value-action gap.” In this study, the definition of this gap is further expanded by considering individual intention. The discrepancies between environmental values, intention, and behavior are explored in the context of two environmentally relevant behaviors—mobility and consumption—using qualitative interviews. Firstly, key structural and intrapersonal obstacles to pro-environmental behavior are identified. Secondly, individual needs and requirements for facilitating eco-friendly behavior are addressed. Finally, strategies and potentials for pro-environmental change in society are discussed.

In the architecture, engineering, construction, and facilities management (AEC/FM) industry methodologies are needed to ensure the interoperability of data and effective management of information from different sources. Integration of the cost domain and cost estimation within the Building Information Model (BIM) in the AEC/FM sector is still an unresolved problem and one of the most critical tasks due to the lack of a standardised cost domain, especially in the tendering phase. To ensure interoperability between cost data and geometric data, this research aims to address this gap by analyzing methods of converting cost data into Linked Building Data, thereby defining a cost domain in the Semantic Web, by collecting them into a graph database. This allows for structuring a cost domain, translating an IFC based structure previously developed by the research group, visualizing it using a graph system, and connecting it to the BIM geometric domain. Furthermore, it is possible to extend the cost ontology previously identified in the IFC model and facilitate the queries and analysis of cost data currently fragmented and based on unstructured data. The results show how Semantic Web technology can be used to improve data interoperability, develop a cost ontology, and join both cost data and BIM models

Abstract We present a case study of Process Mining (PM) for personnel security screening in the Canadian government. We consider customer (process time) and organizational (cost) perspectives. Furthermore, in contrast to most published case studies, we assess the full process improvement lifecycle: pre-intervention analyses pointed out initial bottlenecks, and post-intervention analyses identified the intervention impact and remaining areas for improvement. Using PM techniques, we identified frequent exceptional scenarios (e.g., applications requiring amendment), time-intensive loops (e.g., employees forgetting tasks), and resource allocation issues (e.g., involvement of non-security personnel). Subsequent process improvement interventions, implemented using a flexible low-code digital platform, reduced security briefing times from around 7 days to 46 h, and overall process time from around 31 days to 26 days, on average. From a cost perspective, the involvement of hiring managers and security screening officers was significantly reduced. These results demonstrate how PM can become part of a broader digital transformation framework to improve public service delivery.

Earlier research identified that, although tribunals rarely cited legal authority and provided only minimal rationalization of their decisions, like the factor-dependent model, tribunals’ approaches varied. To facilitate an evidence-based dialogue about whether those findings persisted, Chapter 7 explores tribunals’ rationalization of cost decisions. It first assesses how many awards contained any rationalization for costs and identifies material gaps between non-final and final awards. Second, it conducts content analysis of tribunals’ costs rationalizations. Third, it explores whether tribunals’ ability to explain their cost decisions changed over time. While there was some evidence that tribunals improved in their cost rationalization, material gaps remained. Tribunals tended to focus upon parties’ relative success, perceived equity and reasonableness, and tribunal discretion, with part conduct during proceedings being of secondary consideration. Meanwhile, concerns involving public justice norms were rarely, if ever, used.

This chapter explains how to evaluate the distributional consequences of health programmes by comparing inequality penalized measures of population health. The approach taken is founded on use of rank-dependent social welfare functions (SWFs) that evaluate population health outcomes in terms of equity-weighted average health, using weights that depend only on rank in the distribution of health. The underlying ethical principles and resource allocation implications are compared with those of the level-dependent welfare function approach introduced in the next chapter. Conditions under which quantitative results derived from a rank-dependent SWF are consistent with the preference ordering of programmes established by dominance analysis are identified. The approach is easily extended to allow for aversion to health inequality in relation to an equity-relevant variable, such as socioeconomic status.
