Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to study the means by which Edouard Glissant and Raphaël Confiant recreate Martiniquean culture in their respective novels « La Case du commandeur » (1981) and “Commandeur du sucre” (1994). This thesis addresses the basic question of whether these novels, which attempt to reflect Martiniquean identity along historical, geographical, human and ethnic parameters, embody the poetics generally attributed to them, namely Caribbeanness and Creoleness. The totality of the corpus made up by both novels is considered in this study as the visions recreated by two erudite informers regarding their culture and their country. Lexico-semantic structures are examined on the basis of the lemmas used in discourse to name the characters and to mark the space-time references associated with identified notional groups. The study establishes the similitudes and differences, as far as the above-mentioned aspects under analysis are concerned, which exist between the two poetics represented by these novels published in the last two decades of the 20th century. Edouard Glissant’s novel covers a time span extending from the arrival of the slaves in Martinique up to the late 1970s, while Raphaël Confiant depicts the Martinique of the 1930s

Full textContemporary Breton poetry, in the French language, gives much importance to the notion of territory, understood as meaning the geographical areas, landscapes or even certain places, all within the region of Brittany. The Breton identity is defined by several characteristics, one of which is the strong tie to the Brittany region or territory. With poets published since the Second World War, this theme is explicitly present, with the toponym precisely, or implicitly, locating the setting evoked. In our study of the notion of territory in contemporary Breton poetry, in the French language, we have chosen a thematic reading, to precisely define the different ways of evoking the region. This notion is examined in three main lines : land, water, a lost or re-found territory. Certain poets evoke the territory as linked to the land and more precisely to the forest or the Mounts of Arrée ; others emphasize the territory as linked to water in a varied spectrum of marshes, islands or rivers. Full textThe evocation of Parisian locations in Modiano's work aims not only to structure a concise, economic narrative style, but serves also as a distinctive melting-pot for speculative associations about the past and the evolution of a sense of memory. In addition, the perception of the capital weaves a complex web, sometimes problematic, between the Romanesque forms of urban space (decoration, trace, circulatory systems, architectural object, urban subject) and the primary narrative project: memory. A focal point of mental as of pedestrian wanderings, the Paris of Modiano's work deploys a symbolism and poeticisation of the memorable. Through its depiction as at times evanescent and lugubrious, sometimes picturesque and exotic, the capital gives rise to a fantasy-infused chronicle of a fragmentary memory. Paris, in Modianos' world, is ultimately intimately connected to the problem of identity, as expressed throughout the novels in terms of the aspect of Jewish being. This is not solely symbolic but also reflects a historic reality and attempts to express the experience of the unsayable. .

Full textThis thesis provides a reflection on the paradoxical articulation between the “political speech” which is at the public level and the “literature expression” which is at the singular level. The dissertation relies on making a comparative study considering the French female writers from one side and those of Middle-East from the other side. Therefore, we have underlined fundamental questions concerning the status and identity of the women. We have specially focuses on its challenging relation with the world of expression, creation, and innovation; more generally, with the public domain. During the critical periods of the modern history, the publications of Arab and French women, especially in the domain of wars and political conflicts, have highlighted their potentials and motivate the redefinition of their role in the oriental and occidental socio-political world. Basically, the women introduce effectively in both the political and poetical worlds modern concepts and values through the usage of linguistically tools of challenge and revolution. This implicitly seeks to liberate her from the assigned minor position in the society through the power of expression and the strength of word. Then, this leads to figure out a world under a harmonious and even mystic relation among its human beings where the differences are absorbed by the syncretism of expressions and values. Such Cultural Revolution, based on the dialog of civilizations, provides a better world liberated from the frontiers of the “difference”

Full textThe entire history of Italian literature shows author after author who, for differing reasons, felt the need to turn to the French language for the artistic expression of their works. My work herein aims in particular to analyse the experience and the work between the two languages of the de Chirico brothers, in order to discover the way in which their relationship with the French language and culture influenced and determined their literary works. The justification of my choice of authors to be studied are the actual works of the de Chirico brothers which have revealed them-selves to be a vast field of research for the intertextual problems of the bilingual phenomenon; this is confirmed by the considerable volume of their poetic and literary works [especially to create Hebdomeros – de Chirico – and Vita di Mercurio – Savinio - ]. Equally as important is the collaboration of the de Chirico bothers with Papini’s magazine «La Vraie Italie», which has allowed us to observe not only another aspect of their bilingual writing but also the evolution of their relationship with Italy and with France which is tied to the problem of identity. Their constant relationship with France which manifests itself through the alternation of writing in Italian and French is, in fact, a clear sign of an identity which has its’ roots above all in the cultural complexity of their atypical education. Once the problem of “I, biographer” has been overcome, their works try to re-establish an “I, universal” which, in order to express itself, requires a plurality of languages

Full textThe link between Paris and Turkey was founded when both countries opened diplomatic relationships in the 17th century. Since then, the French culture, language and literature has been key to the Turkish intelligentsia, the first victim of the political instability the country is experiencing since 1960. Paris played the role of a window into the Western world, driving generations of writers to cultivate the myth of the Ville Lumière, city of love, revolutions and freedom. The debate on the place of Turkey in Europe justified a close look into the images of Paris in the contemporary Turkish literature. This study focused on three contemporary writers, who all worked under the shadow of Attilâ Ilhan the precursor, who died in 2005. Demir Özlü, the nauseated loner, for whom Paris will always remain an inaccessible dream, Nedim Gürsel, the prolix lover who turned the city into his mistress, and Enis Batur, the scientific explorer who observed each and every of its stones, have each in their own way placed Paris at the heart of their literary production. In doing so, they preserve the special status the French capital city enjoys in the Turkish collective imagination. Through their exiles and wanderings, they serve as a bridge between Turkey, whose traditions are grounded in the Middle-East, and Paris, which incarnates a Western world that is depicted either as flamboyant or decadent but will always remain obsessive. The fact that they are constantly split between two languages, cultures and places, Paris on the one hand, Istanbul and Turkey on the other hand, pulls them into a gnawing and permanent quest of their identity of human being and writer
