Full textTo speak media under the angle of the cultural identities in a globalized context, it is to demonstrate that to pass on(to transmit) information of all kinds (information-news, information-knowledge, leisure activities, and advertising(publicity)), the media are also vehicles of culture. In this globalized environment, do not the public contents produced and spread(broadcasted) by the companies of media assure(do not insure) no trend(tendency) the standardization of the cultures towards the most powerful economic cultures?Our work consisted in observing and in analyzing this interdependent relation existing between the cultures, the media and the globalization, in cases of countries chosen in sub-Saharan Africa, to know how the media and the globalization, can be agents of the globalization of the cultures, or if elements of resistances and defenses of the cultural identities show themselves. The media were doubtless completely vectors of the westernization upon their arrival in sub-Saharan Africa. Nowadays, always prevails the employment(use) of the languages(tongues) of the colonizers in the written media.However, within the spoken media, the African languages are much more used.Concerning, the contents, we were able to observe that many western companies of media become established in sub-Saharan Africa by introducing western contents which have a significant cultural influence on the African receivers. The latter, introduce more African contents into their program to widen the audience, in a more and more competitive context. Africa arouses, a renewed interest, we hope for it promising

Full textThis study draws on a fund of sound recordings, made in Gabon between 1954 and 1966 by Herbert Pepper, Orstom's researcher. Going through the whole country, the ethnomusicologist and his colleague collected a wide variety of music, tales and other oral expressions, and created the Arts and Traditions’ Museum of Libreville to preserve, catalog and enhance the results of this research in a sustainable way.These records may be considered as representative components of “intangible cultural heritage” of Gabon, a concept which was defined by the Unesco Convention in 2003. Many countries such as Gabon, whose traditions are orally transmitted, were previously rarely represented on the World Heritage List. It’s therefore interesting to trace the evolution and expansion of the concept of heritage since the early nineteenth century, significant moment in Europe which has seen development of interest in the past’s relics, both of collecting oral traditions and conserving material traces in Museum. Today, the advent of digital media has significantly changed practices and conceptions in the area of conservation and heritage development. Through digitization, oral traditions now have suitable tools for their diffusion and it’s possible to continue the work begun by Herbert Pepper when he wished the character « total » to retain for gabonese cultural expressions

Full textThis study analyszes the representation of cultural identity in sixteen drama texts written by Kenyans in English and in French for the Kenya National Drama Festival (KNDF). Considering the colonial history and the postcolonial context of Kenya, the task involved identifying the postcolonial markers within the texts, identifying major themes and traits constituting a Kenyan cultural identity and determining specific cultural identity. Using a comparative approach, the study draws from both postcolonial and theatre theories. The postcolonial concepts touching on identity through language, culture and representation are identified and analyzed in respect to the Kenyan context. For this reason, the study narrows down to the theoretical works of Edward Saïd, Homi K. Bhabha, Chinua Achebe and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. The study reveals that the Kenyan population is faced with a multiplicity of cultural choices brought about by the colonization experience, the new practices associated with globalization, as well as the complexities and challenges of daily life. The KNDF proves to be an avenue for sensitizing the public on new phenomena, for denouncing societal ills and for promoting African traditional norms. It is apparent that the use of European languages does not hinder the representation of cultural reality of the local society. Kenya therefore attests to cultural mobility seen in the progression from the traditional system towards a more globalized disposition

Full textIn his work, Gabriel García Márquez recalls a particular geographical and cultural space, the Caribbean, through which he apprehends the world. By way of a new language developed through means of aesthetic expressions that he deems inherent to his reality, García Márquez puts his writing at the service of the recognition of the geographical and cultural specificity of the Caribbean and the Latin American continent in general. Their singularity is the product of their complex historical process: the history must be read again and rewritten. García Márquez’s challenge in creation is to transcribe his reality, to poeticize it. Transformed into a mythical place, the Caribbean is first and foremost a sentimental space: the constant intrusion of autobiographical exploration transforms the literary and journalistic work of García Márquez into a realm of memory, reflection, and imagination that are driven by nostalgia. From one story to another, the cultural identity of the Caribbean is built and builds with it that of the writer. The constant affirmation of that particular cultural reality is the primary factor that guides and imposes the creative challenge. The universal scope of his work lies within his creative process: if the identity discourse always brings back to the particular, the aesthetic creation projects the work into a universal sphere. The cultural diversity of the Caribbean is mirrored through images indicative of the manner in which García Márquez considers and enhances that plural presence. As a starting point for any comparative thinking, the study of the foreign dimension reveals mythological and symbolical dimensions that are common to other cultures

Full textThis research project explores the cultural identities and the literary and artistic agencies of the Harlem Renaissance. Firstly, discourses and epistemological practices that traversed the Harlem Renaissance are highlighted in a short intellectual genealogy of the movement. In particular, the relationship of the godfathers of the Harlem Renaissance (W.E.B. Du Bois, Alain Locke) to the American nationalist discourse is given front stage. Such relationship is considered on the background of early-XX-century New York urbanization and regulamentation of bodies and spaces, as the Great Migration of black Americans from the South to the North was taking place. The analysis is complexified by considerations on how, in Harlem, artistic and recreational practices appropriated gendered and racialized identities generated by national state power; also, white modernists' epistemic, discursive and poetic participation to the process is explored. Successively, the research project engages with the reading of black Jamaican author Claude McKay’s literary works. McKay’s writings allow us to trace some thematic axes that show commonalities with the Renaissance godfathers’ concerns, notably in relation to the performance of raced and gendered identities in political and propagandistic discourses of the beginning of the XX century. Yet, it appears that McKay’s writings exceed the idealist formalization of the “black folk” (Du Bois) supported by the cultural elites of the Renaissance, to occupy a ground which privileges a material and existential outlook. Elaborating from the dialogism that characterizes McKay’s writings, and from their relation to European nationalist fictions, the thesis reflects on the notion of intersubjectivity as the literariness of the Harlem Renaissance works is considered and put in relation to black and white subjectivities that clash or meet on the national panorama of the time. Thirdly, the style and cultural figures that appear in the McKay’s fiction provide some guidelines to the study of the works by black writers Wallace Thurman, Richard Bruce Nugent, Nella Larsen, as well as of the works by white writers such as Carl Van Vetchen. Contextually, the methodological question of the death of the author will be further explored in order to extricate a vast and complex specter of cultural identities, and to question power relations linked to the performance of such identities in the arts and writings of the time

Full textThis research studies socialization and education of children born from mixed-couples formed by an Italian and an African sub-Saharan parent, living in Italy. The study is developed within an ecological framework of families, and it is based on theoretical knowledge gained from studies concerning mixedness and acculturation processes. Our aim is to better understand identity, culture and education strategies developed by parents, and the way parents perceive such strategies. Three complementary directions of research are explored: migratory experience and union formation, transmission of identity and culture, and parenting strategies. The empirical stage of the research is based on a qualitative methodology. The investigation concerned 19 families; 18 mothers and 11 fathers were interviewed by narrative techniques. The results show the interaction between the African parent migratory experience and family dynamics. The various dimensions of the mixed familiar contexts (linguistic, religious, ethnic, cultural, social) create unique family profiles. Several factors impact parenting strategies: migration, socioeconomic background, stigmatization, « migration of contact and internal migration », relationships with the extended family and transnationalism, and social relationships. Social context is decisive. The perception of racial discrimination hinders dealing with differences. Supportive social networks, valorization of migrant culture, and sharing common values help parents to overcome these difficulties. This research provides a new knowledge about an emerging familiar context

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyse the connection between literature and the portrayal of ethnic minorities based on the novels of Ponciá Vicêncio (2003) and Becos da memória, (2006) from Conceição Evaristo, and Niketche : uma história de poligamia (2002), and O Alegre Canto da Perdiz, (2008) from Paulina Chiziane.The research is underpinned by a decolonial approach and a scientific comparison that allows an examination beyond national boundaries, as it draws a parallel between backgrounds that influence the evolution of the work of these authors. These works seek to give a voice to historically silenced communities by a hegemonic power and shed light on minority cultural identities related to post-colonialism, racism, gender, orality, the safeguarding of “underground memories” (Pollak, 1993), and the “position of speech” (Ribeiro, 2019). These works examine the emergence of ethnic minority identities and the contribution of literature therein, referencing the narratives of black women in societies evolving from slavery and colonisation. This thesis highlights the ability of literature to contribute to the empowerment of minorities and challenge sexist and racial bias in modern society

Full textThe Porto Novo region, an inherited cultural territory in the south of Benin, in West Africa, is part of a growing conurbation (between Cotonou and Porto Novo) with rapid urbanization, urban sprawl and functional mutations in the use of space.Porto Novo - the political capital of Benin, outdistanced demographically and economically by its neighbor Cotonou - and the Porto Novo region, like other African territories have, in recent years, both undergone a dynamic of "patrimonialisation" (granting of heritage status) and claiming of identity, while a movement to give new value to its traditions and support local governance has been encouraged by international authorities and sponsors.The question of "patrimonialisation", through its appropriation by the actors involved in the management and development of the territories, first and foremost suggests that light should be thrown on the current social and cultural dynamics at work and what is at stake territorially speaking in the Porto Novo region. While decentralization is increasingly evident, the town and its region are also currently at the centre of rivalries over politics and identity in which the patrimony seems to play a strategic part in the game of the territorial actors

Full textSince twenty years, we familiarize ourselves with name Africans-Americans to indicate the American Blacks. However, since its appearance, some people thought that this name would not be accepted by group members. However, upon of their arrival on the American continent, the Blacks identified themselves as Africans and this reference reappeared in the twentieth century. Through interviews, carried out in Atlanta, in March 2001, we analyse the part played by the collective memory and the social memory on their identity and we interpret the speech of the individuals about the new name introduced in 1989. The thesis is an analysis historical and anthropological of discourses of identity among African Americans of Atlanta in 2001. We identify two axes in the identification process which roots go in the nineteenth century. The awareness of the single situation of the Africans in America has always oriented identity and « … The Negro protest movement in two ways and has led in two directions simultaneously: wanting out and wanting in…» (Joanne Grant 1968, 1983, 1986 : 9).
