Full textI Sverige har det pågått en fyra decennier lång regiondebatt om hur den regionala förvaltningen ska organiseras. Denna debatt har resulterat i ett beslut om en försöksverksamhet med regionalt självstyre i fyra län från 1 juli 1997 till 31 december 2002. I den regionala försöksverksamheten som ytterligare har förlängts till 2006 ingår Kalmar, Gotland, Skåne och Västra Götaland. De två sistnämnda regionerna är mitt undersökningsmål. Syftet med denna uppsats är att lyfta fram de väsentliga faktorer/element som kan relateras till och förknippas med regional identitet. Fokus för min uppsats ligger på svenska regioner och regiondebatt.Den regionala identiteten har uppmärksammats av många forskare och debattörer eftersom den ses som en förutsättning för en regional kontinuitet och framgångsrik utveckling. En hel del politiska debatter ägnar sig antingen åt att tona ned eller lyfta fram den regionala identitetens betydelse för den nationella statens framtida roll och status. Mitt undersökningsområde är regionerna Skåne och Västra Götaland och uppsatsens fokus ligger på den regionala identiteten.

Intention: The main focus of this study is to verify the existence, or nonexistence, of local and regional identities. Considering the result regarding regional identities, this thesis will continue on to clarify if these identities are to be seemed as a threat or resource during fusions, and if so, how can one best manage these different identities.
Method: Only secondary data has been used in this study. I've botanized amongst the literature that processes fusions, impact of culture, identities, regions, territory. Continuing on, the collected empirical resources have been compared to my theory, from which an analysis was able to be spawned and conclusions were drawn.
Result & Conclusions: The thesis confirms different regional identities, although it does not treat the subject regarding the inner strength of regions comparing to one another. Furthermore, when fusions are initiated it is strongly vital that the different regional identities are supported, promoted and encouraged. A fusion consisting of many different identities is to be preferred ahead a homogenous one. Media has an vital part in structuring regional identities by the instruments of radio, newspapers and TV.
Suggestions for future research: Which effects may the fusion between Växjö University and Högskolan i Kalmar have, when merging into the Linné University? Are there any other similar examples one can study? Which factors should one consider regarding fusions of Universities?
Contribution of the thesis: This study clarifies and explains regional identities, the impact of culture, fusions, territory and why and how one should promote heterogeneous fusions.

Full textThis study focuses on developing a visual identity for the stream AntagonistenTV on Twitch.tv owned by Felipe Delgado. David Sless sevenstep method has been used in the creation of identity. A visual content analysis has been done on other streams to gain a better understanding of the streaming world and to facilitate the design process. Surveys have been used to get the target group's perspectives and opinions. The survey shows how the viewers are influenced by the stream design. The end result was a visual identity for AntagonistenTV which was summarized in a graphic manual.

When immigrants move to Sweden from their native country it is not unusual that they experience some kind of identity crises. Their own experience of their cultural identity can be very problematic and they often lose a part of what they previously saw as their own identity. To handle such crises the immigrants can use different strategies. They can for example accept their disparity, deny it or emphasize it. The aim of this study is to examine how immigrants in Sweden experience that their cultural identity has changed since they moved here from a country that has a culture that is different from the Swedish culture. To reach my goal with this study I interviewed immigrants/refugees from Chile, Lebanon and Thailand. Some of the results are that my presentation of the problem and the aim with the study were not profound enough. I intended to only write about cultural identity but I came to the conclusion that individual identity and different adaptation strategies were no less important. A further conclusion is that these three ingredients are completely different things; an immigrant can have one individual identity, another cultural identity and use a strategy that does not correspond with any of these. Moreover I also found that a person’s identity does not need to change when moving from their native country to Sweden. Finally I want to stress that my study is not about making sweeping statements, it is rather exemplifying. Identity and strategies are different from one person to another.

Full textI dagens samhälle har etnicitet betydelsen socialt konstruerade kategoriseringar som har sina utgångspunkter i förväntningar utifrån kulturella och historiska bakgrunder. I denna antologi har vi den socialkonstruktivistiska utgångspunkten att etnicitet skapas i socialt samspel.
Etnicitet påverkar våra liv överallt. Det är något som är påtagligt på alla nivåer i samhället, såväl på individnivå som på strukturell nivå, således går det att urskilja att etnicitet är tätt knutet till maktstrukturer. Etnicitet är närvarande i vår vardag och är idag ett av de viktigaste analytiska perspektiven att använda för att få ökad kunskap om vårt samhälle och de individer och grupper som lever i det.
Johanna Köpséns bidrag belyser etnicitet ur ett perspektiv som tydliggör att även svenskhet är etnicitet. Günay Dogans bidrag diskuterar hur föräldrar till utlandsfödda adoptivbarn förhåller sig till sitt barns etniska och kulturella bakgrund. Johan Engkvists bidrag handlar om hur gymnasieungdomar med utländsk bakgrund ser på teman som utbildning, arbete och etnicitet. Adisa Handzic belyser identitetsskapande hos unga vuxna med invandrarbakgrund ur ett invandrarperspektiv. Jennie Ignbergs bidrag behandlar hur utlandsfödda vuxna upplever diskriminering. I alla dessa bidrag belyser vi alltså hur etnicitet är närvarande i individers och gruppers identitetsskapande.

Full textThe aim of this thesis was to study how bisexually-identified people relate to their identity in a binary world. Five persons (one non-binary identified, one male-identified, two female-identified and one queer female-identified) have been interviewed, and the interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, also known as IPA. The results confirm much of earlier research concerning sexual identity development where the participants went through phases of confusion, need of pride/coming out, need of cultural immersion and synthesis. The participants also experienced that there was particular demands on bisexual-identified people and how they experienced attraction, and they had several experiences of different forms of stigmatisation aimed at bisexuality, such as prejudices about hypersexuality, sexualisation and monosexism.

Full textThis study focuses on how individualized forms of identities are constructed within the sphere of blogging. The premiss of the study is that changes in society brought about by globalization has changed peoples ways of forming identities, and that blogging functions as a new kind of tool for identity-construction. The object of analysis is a webbased blogging-course made by three successful female bloggentrepreneurs, Clara Lidström, Anna-Karin Nyberg and Frida Ramstedt. The purpose of the course is according to them to teach bloggers how to portray themselves in the best way, with the aim of becoming visible in the blog-world, expand and turn blogging into business. The purpose of the study is to contribute with observations of how contemporary social activities - through certain discourse - forms social reality and by that, identity. The question formulation is about how the individualized identity is created through blogging, what patterns this identity is made up of, and also what external discourses the blogging-self is affected by. The theoretical framework include the theorization of Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck and Anthony Elliott & Charles Lemert, with their various perspectives on identity in an individualized society, in literature of the 21st century. Methods used are text analysis, with content analysis as the primary tool. Role-theory and humanistic theory originated from discourse psychology have been used to understand and portray the blog-identity. The study resulted in the conclusion that the constuction of identity through blogging is to be regarded as dependant of contextual and socially constructed values, that the blog-identity is closely related to the businessworld and that the self is displayed via rethorical techniques derived from various self-interests.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to investigate in which way samis in Stockholm relate to their identity in lack of their language. Four sami living in Stockholm have been interviewed. Furthermore, books, laws, and rules regarding the language and living of the samis are investigated.
It is shown that historical factors and episodes still are the bases of how they are influenced and relate to their identity, group belonging, and ethnicity.
The questions of the principles behind ones identifying as a sami, and if there is any difference compared to the corresponding principles of the rest of the society, are also dealt with.
It is clearly shown that Samis are not an outdated people, but rather a people that follow the general social and technical development.
It is concluded that samis who live and grow up in Stockholm today which don’t practice reindeer husbandry and lack the sami language, have difficulties in feeling fully acceptance in there identity as samis.

Full textThe key purpose of this research has been to study and understand how young people with Syriac ethnicity experience their identity, when living in two different cultures. The Syriac minority is something of a special case when it concerns establishing the identity of an individual, since syriac´s do not have an official country.
To be able to do this research an interview has been done with four young students with syriac ethnicity. The four of them is attending their final year at “gymnasiet” in Sweden which is equivalent to USA’s senior year in high school.
The multicultural school is today a fact and many immigrants attending the Swedish schools today feels misplaced when they meet the Swedish culture through fellow students and society. A clash between cultures occurs and most of the students, with non-Swedish ethnicity, live some kind of dual life. One side of this twin identity represents the ethnic identity which dominates at home and around relatives. The other side is displayed in circumstances outside of their home, which is at school and in the Swedish society in general.
This research shows the general opinion, among syriac high school students, concerning the individual identity and in which way they handle their own identity development when living within two different cultures.
One of my main questions to investigate is to find out if young students, with syriac ethnicity, develops a weak root in their ethnic identity by living outside of the syriac community.
One of my conclusions is that a student with syriac ethnicity, whom is educated in an intercultural school is rather encouraged in seeking his/her roots. Since the multicultural environment awakens a curiosity in students to seek their own ethnic identity.

Full textThe aim of this paper is to sensitize readers about consumer culture and how it can affect the identity of individuals. Research shows us that we live in a consumer culture that affects people's identity and what social consequences this can create. Therefore the aim is to increase understanding of how students experience the culture of consumption. The study is of a qualitative nature of hermeneutics as a method approach and has been implemented with the support of eight interviews of students at Halmstad University. The empirical data is interpreted based on theories of consumers’ society (Bauman), interaction (Goffman) and respectability and capital (Skeggs & Bourdieu). The result shows that consumer culture has an influence on the students at Halmstad University. The social impacts consumer culture has contributed to is, maintaining the identities that are based on the picture the individuals are trying to maintain trough consumption. Students use the products for their impression management because they believe that their identity is presented by this. Students wants to belong to social groups and it is shown that consumption provides an identity of belonging and a membership in a consumer society, which should indicate respectability.

Full textMediesamhället av idag påverkar människan på olika sätt. Vi väljer medvetet medier som vi verkligen vill använda. Andra medier, som vi inte väljer, påverkar oss på ett indirekt sätt och detta kanske vi inte lägger märke till. I medieperiferin finns reklamen. Reklamen är tänkt att påverka och göra oss uppmärksamma på olika företeelser. Detta kan ske genom aktuella bilder, situationer och musik, som har konstruerats av reklambyråer, för att skapa uppmärksamhet, delaktighet och igenkännande hos den eventuella kunden.
Vi, som blivande lärare, har velat undersöka och klargöra hur klädreklamen påverkar dagens ungdomar och om/hur skolan arbetar med dessa frågor. Syftet med vår uppsats är att empiriskt undersöka och intervjua ungdomar och därigenom tydliggöra hur ungdomar påverkas av reklam. I första hand har vi undersökt och fokuserat på TV-reklam. Vår studie är kvalitativ och vi har gjort ett urval av ungdomar och lärare. Vi genomförde vår studie på en och samma gymnasieskola för att undersöka hur man idag arbetar med, förhåller sig till reklam och begreppet identitet i skolan.
Resultatet av vår studie har visat att medvetenheten och kunskapen kring hur reklam fungerar och påverkar är låg bland de ungdomar vi har intervjuat. För att förstå varandra bättre, motverka fördomar och märkeshysteri bör lärare och elever uppmuntras till att diskutera de grundläggande värderingar som finns i reklambudskapen. En diskussion kan motverka t ex mobbing när det gäller olika klädval d v s uppmuntra till tolerans av olika individers val av klädstil. Den slutsats, som vi har kommit fram till, är att ungdomarna anser att deras kompisar påverkas mera av reklam än de själva gör. Medvetenheten om reklamens påverkan skiljer sig också mellan killar och tjejer. Tjejer har en viss insikt och medger att de påverkas generellt av reklambudskapen medan killarna är tveksamma till om de överhuvudtaget påverkas. Lärarnas åsikter om elevers klädstil i skolan tar vi också upp i denna uppsats. Enligt vad som framkommit i vår studie kan elever genom sin klädstil uttrycka värderingar, attityder och beteenden.

Full textThis thesis deals with local identity and the workplace. We have taken part of stories dealing with local identity and the workplace, by using a qualitative method. We interviewed eleven men working at the same company. The group contained of men from urban areas as well as rural areas. The data from our interviews have been applied to theories of local identity and social theories by sociologists such as Durkheim, Simmel and Tönnies.
We asked questions regarding local identity and its influence in the workplace. We found our respondents expressing a sense of home and local identity, however it was not a decisive aspect in the recruitment process.

Full textWe live in a society where we are not bound to one place. We are encouraged to be mobile and constantly moving between different locations. The life in a convent is a contrast to this; nuns live at a specific place they are bounded to by vows and can not leave. The sisters in the convent of St. Birgitta, Pax Mariae have promised to stay at the same place and live by the rules of the convent. They live within the walls of the convent, an area with clear boarders. In this essay I analyse the meaning of a place, how the convent affects the nuns and their identity. The wall and the restricted area, inner- and outer attributes show where the nuns belong and characterize their life in the convent. The surrounding wall is a symbolic boarder to the nuns, but it also protects from impulses from the society and the outer world. The most evident influence the place has on the identities of the nuns is that they through vows become members of a camaraderie where they call each other sisters, changes their names and wear the same clothes. They become nuns, a ubiquitous identity. Regardless of whom they meet or of where they go, they will be seen as nuns.
I ett samhälle av platslöshet, där vi uppmanas att vara mobila och ständigt befinna oss på olika ställen finns en kontrast; kloster. I kloster är nunnor genom löften bundna till den specifika platsen. Nunnorna i S: ta Birgittas kloster Pax Mariae har lovat att för resten av sin levnad stanna på samma plats och leva efter regler om lydnad, fattigdom och avhållsamhet. De lever inom klostrets murar på ett väl avgränsat område. Denna uppsats behandlar platsens betydelse, hur klostret som plats påverkar nunnorna och deras identitet genom muren och det avgränsade området men även genom inre och yttre attribut som visar på nunnornas tillhörighet till klostret. Muren är för systrarna en symbolisk gräns för deras klausul, det område de inte får gå utanför, men den fungerar även skyddande mot omvärldens impulser. Den mest påtagliga inverkan platsen har på nunnornas identitet är att de genom löftena uppgår i en gemenskap där de kallar varandra för systrar, får ett nytt namn och likadana kläder. De blir i första hand nunnor och kan inte plocka av sig denna identitet. Oavsett vem de möter eller var de befinner sig tillskrivs de rollen som nunna.

The purpose of the examinationwork is to describe the youth period and give a view of in what way chat forms the today’syouths identity. Further more this work aims to contribute to parents´ and grown-ups´awareness about such a situation of life among youth, for them to be able to haveunderstanding for the youths, accept their behavior and language and to support them. Thework is based on the following questions: What may the identity searching process mean? Inwhat way may chat and chat language form the youth’s identity? The methods which wereused to get answers of the issues have been to interview the youths about chat, and chatlanguage, and to make a research of extracts from the personal chat examples of theinterviewed group. The theoretical background consisted of the I-identity definition, as wellas the psychoanalytical theory and the social psychological theory, and the definitions of chatand language. The result indicates towards that chat and chat language is a part of today’syouth’s everyday life. Full textThe purpose of this study is to understand how identity based on organic consumption is constructed online. The questions asked in the study are how organic identity is constructed in the online group that is being studied, how the informants’ understand theirs organic consumption and how the informants experience other people’s perceptions of the informants’ identity. The studied online group was created to discuss organic consumption and lifestyle. Former research on sustainable consumption is presented and theories about consumption and identity are described. The study has a qualitative approach and encompasses three interviews as well as texts from the online group’s forum. The results show a fear for risks involved in eating conventional food. The members of the online group describe going from consuming conventional food to consuming organic food as a process. There are also two different sorts of organic identities described in the results. At the end of the essay I discuss the results in relation to previous research and theory. I conclude that an organic identity is being constructed in the online group. I also suggest that future research might look into the relation between capitalism and construction of organic identities.

Full textThe present research is an example of how a visual identity can be created for music bands. The research was conducted using the band Marigold as an example. The following research is based on a problem: The band members believe that their current visual identity does not align with how they perceive themselves visually and has not evolved at the same rate as their music, message and values. The purpose of the research was then to create a graphic expression and several artifacts that correspond to the elements stated above. The aim of the graphic expression and artifacts is to form the basis for Marigold's new visual identity and to more efficiently communicate with their target audience. The research follows a design-based research strategy where different methods have been chosen to solve the research problem. The following methods were used: visual analysis (Marigold and other bands), group interviews (with Marigold) and a focus group (with the intended audience). The different methods provided the basis for the development of the graphic/visual expression and the different artifacts that would then solve the research problem. From the research, it has been established that visual elements such as logo, fonts, colors, “image style” (for moving and still images) were important elements of the band's graphic expression. Artefacts created where, 1 album cover, 3 single covers, “image style for still- and motion pictures, press photos, ads for social media and design proposition for a website. The different artifacts were chosen and developed based on what the band themselves asked for, on collected knowledge of how other actors in the music industry look and the audience's attitudes and opinions. How a visual identity should be constructed depends on the needs and problems of the individual case. In Marigold’s case it was important to create a unified expression that aligns with their music, messages, values, and communicates this to the intended audience, as was the goal of this research.

Full textThis study has focused on how identity and identity-creation takes place, with a focus on the influence of social media. The emergence of a postmodern society, an individualized culture and increased globalization contribute to change at the micro level in terms of social structures and relationships. The main theory of the study is Richard Jenkin's theory around social identity. Anthony Giddens modernity theory complements to reach the problem at macro level while Erving Goffman's dramaturgical model and Thomas J. Scheff's social psychological theory of the emotions shame and pride are used as supporting theories. It is a qualitative method that is used in the form of semi-structured interviews with six respondents between 20 and 26 years. The study's results highlight the comparative culture that occurs on social media, which affects the individual's self-image. The identity also appears to be different online verses offline.

Full textAbstract "Welcome home again" – a study of immigrant women’s identity changes in the Swedish society. In our research, we intend to highlight the identity formations and changes of young immigrant women. These young women live under the influence of two cultures where their belonging to their “origin” is often determined by an essentialist approach, which indicates that it is defined by a common origin and a specific cultural belonging. Yet, the women in our study suggest that their identity is shaped according to a constructionist approach, where the cultural identity is not determined by a common belonging; instead, their identity tend to change as it is constantly reconstructed in accordance with their (social) condition. We have made a selection, where we have chosen active women that have worked hard to integrate in the Swedish society, rather than the "traditional housewife". The purpose of our study is to explore, and thus understand, how these women perceive themselves, how the society perceives their identity, and how their identity changes. We have decided to proceed from different theoretical starting-points, such as integration, identity, cultural identity, dual identities, prejudices, inclusion and exclusion, that will be applied in our analysis of the interviews. By applying a qualitative method, our intention is to answer the following research questions: How do these women perceive their own identity? How do people in their surroundings perceive their identity, according to the women themselves? How does the identity change in different contexts? Do the women feel integrated in the Swedish society or do they feel excluded? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having dual identities and a single identity? Full textTwo identities the internal auditor on a university experience are a professional identity and an organizational identity. Consciously or unconsciously, the internal auditor needs to acknowledge when the professional and the organizational identity are expressed since the identities both have positive and negative aspects on the role as an internal auditor. The purpose of this study was to create an understanding of how the internal auditors professional and organizational identity are balanced and expressed in practice. This was done by identifying problematic situations and analyzing tensions. Social Identity theory was used as the base for the study and previous research in identity, identification and auditors have complemented the theory. Qualitative interviews with internal auditors at eight universities have constituted the empirical material to capture problematic situations. The results indicate the internal auditors need to balance the interaction between the professional and the organizational identity when problematic situations occur. Trust from employees in the internal auditor is seen as a reason for why tensions occur in the problematic situations which can create conflicts in the interaction between the professional and organizational identity. The professional identity is seen to contribute to why an objective stance is valued, simultaneously the organizational identity is seen to contribute to why trust and understanding from employees are valued. Future research is proposed to investigate if and why differences in tensions among internal auditors exist in the public and private sector.

Full textThe purpose of this study was twofold: a) To investigate dimensions and a structure of a personal identity in adolescent football players. b) To investigate a link between the players' athletic identity as a part of the personal identity and their self-esteem. An interview guide was made according to the objectives. Seven adolescent football players (four girls and three boys), who all played for the national team, were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Interesting parts were noticed and illustrative quotations were used to present the results.
Twelve identity dimensions were found, six of them had not been regarded in prior studies. Football got a lot of attention in the personal identity but other dimensions were also important. Thus, football did not always have the highest priority in the participants’ lives. The relation between identity importance and prioritized behavior seemed more complicated than prior research have suggested. Public attention due to athletic success was one of the factors enhancing self-esteem. Athletic failures did, according to the participants, affect their self-esteem, in different amount however.
The author discusses the results in relation to relevant literature in the identity and self-esteem area. Identity commitment theory (Stryker, 1980; Stryker & Serpe, 1994) seemed difficult to apply to the result. The link between the participants’ athletic identity and their self-esteem seemed to be more complex than prior studies have shown. It is suggested that the discrepancy between the actual-self and the ideal-self (Higgins, 1987, 1989), the disruption of the identity feedback loop (Burke, 1991) and perfectionism (Flett & Hewitt, 2002) has a stronger affect on the adolescent football players than the need for self-enhancement (Leary, 1999; Leary & Baumeister, 2000).
The study implicates that significant others in the athletes’ surrounding ought to emphasize other dimensions of the athletes’ personal identity to avoid athletic identity foreclosure, thus prevent unsuccessful career transitions.

Full textDen här uppsatsens syfte är att ta reda hur olika regionala sammanslagningar eller en regions expansion kan komma att påverka människan på mikronivå, därtill skaffa sig en större förståelse för vad regionala identiteter och dess samspel mellan och inom olika regioner innebär och även skaffa sig en ökad förståelse för fenomenet ”vi mot dem”.
Fokus i uppsatsen är det förslag som Regeringens Ansvarskommitté tagit fram angående en sammanslagning av Sveriges län till nio regioner, där uppsatsen kommer att behandla vd som händer med människors regionala identitet vid en sådan sammanslagning. Förslaget innebär då att Värmlands och Örebro län ska slås samman.
Uppsatsen är uppbyggd på studier av aktuell litteratur, dels genom tidsskrifter om politisk och kulturell geografi och dels genom noga utvald litteratur främst inom ämnet kulturgeografi. Den litteratur som studerats och valts ut har även använts som teoretiska referensramar, på vilken intervjufrågor baseras. Uppsatsen är således även delvis uppbyggd på djupintervjuer, vilka sedan jämförs och analyseras tillsammans med teorin med hjälp av en analysmodell.
Karlstadbor har en väldigt stark identitet som värmlänningar, vilka då har sin identitet starkt kopplat till landskapet Värmland. Administrativa gränser av olika slag är inte så betydelsefulla när det handlar om människors identitet. Då Värmland har ett så starkt varumärke i landskapet så är det främst landskapet som identiteten grundar sig i vilket då innebär att en ny gränsdragning inte spelar någon större roll för den värmländska identiteten. Med en stark identitet tillkommer många olika företeelser. De Karlstadbor som intervjuades för denna uppsats ansåg t.ex. att Örebro län inte vara lika kulturellt betingat och inte lika vackert landskap som Värmland. Det framkom att de största kopplingarna som gjordes till Örebro län var av negativ art. Vidare så är den hänsyn som Ansvarskommittén tagit angående vad som händer med människors regionala identitet vid en eventuell sammanslagning inte tillräcklig. Rapporten har klargjort för vissa företeelser men ej belyst de olika faktorerna som påverkar vår regionala identitet, i någon större utsträckning, vilket anses som otillräckligt.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study how some Swedish people with immigrant backgrounds perceive their situation in the Swedish society, and to contribute new knowledge about second-generation immigrants living in Sweden. The essay will focus on identity and the problem of having different cultures to adjust to. The method we have used is qualitative interviews with a total of six persons of each six who has an immigrant background. That is to say that we have interviewed three girls and three guys to get a clearer picture of gender differences. All informants grew up in Sweden but have parents who grew up in the home country and its culture. We have used Goffman's theory of stigma and Hirdman's theory of gender. These two are central theories but we have also made use of concepts such as, internalization, externalization, ambivalence, roles, ethnicity and cultural crash. Our problem issue read as follows: In what way is the individual identity affected of being split between two different cultures? Our information parties stories about their situation, gave us a deeper understanding of how it is to belong to two different cultures to adapt to at the same time.
