Opening with a description of a Roman oyun havası (Roman dance tune), this chapter describes the gestures, movements, and self-identifying references that this genre evokes. While European, Ottoman and Turkish literature seem to have a rich body of information regarding “Gypsies,” those representations are largely presented in the absence of actual Romani voices. Given the historical experiences of social exclusion political marginalization and discrimination by Turkish Roman, the struggle for control over self-naming was also channeled through and refined in the ongoing creation of their own narratives in commodified and mass-mediated Roman oyun havası. The philosophical concepts of iconicity, metaphoricity, and mimesis as applied to Roman oyun havası suggest one means for examining the dynamic relationship between cultural practices, performances, and their social effects. This chapter also discusses issues of representation in historiographic research, provides an outline of the book and chapter topics, and describes the author’s field work and positionality.

This chapter displays an ideal landscape of Europe by interpreting the painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus from Pieter Brueghel the Elder, giving hint to a constellation of concepts that circumscribe the European identity through the poetic metaphor of the Western World as the archipelago of the sunset referring at the same time to a constellation of Ancient Greek myth, which represents the basic tales of Europe conceived as a geopolitical, linguistic, and cultural problem. However, it acquires a deeper connotation and meaning if it is looked from a metaphorical point of view, considering Europe as an ideal landscape with a peculiar mood or disposition. Europe as a cultural identity consolidated since Renaissance, along the maritime explorations and the emergence of the concept of landscape, which developed from the fields of painting and literature into the scientific description of different world regions up to a new philosophical discipline called the philosophy of landscape.

Pinocchio, the first and the most famous artificial character in children’s literature, was created by Carlo Collodi in 1881. The article analyzes the reasons for the character’s popularity in literature for children and youth, which appear to be found in the permanent development of the latter, both physical and psychological. At the same time, young readers to whom the text is addressed are also in the process of developing their self-identity. Based on analysis of the corpus of modern French novels for young people that involve hybrid beings (combining the properties of human beings and machines), the article explores intertextuality and philosophical foundations of the narrative (including the development of the concepts of “animal machines” by René Descartes and “human machines” by Julien Offray de La Mettrie), demonstrating a high didactic potential of such literature.

This paper questions the reduction of human experience and identity to anatomical determinism in which the category of ‘woman' or ‘man' becomes a universal concept. Through a review of literature on African gender, feminist and masculinity studies, it highlights how people are more than their body parts. It notes how identities are shaped by an intersectionality of various factors such as education, employment status, class, age, physical condition, nationality, citizenship, race and ethnicity. These factors can be spatial and temporal producing differing experiences of gendered lives. African scholars have built up a rich collection of work that repudiates the univerlisation of gender identities based on Western philosophical schools of thought. This chapter addresses the passion for place that can be expressed in localism and its planning initiatives. Planning scholarship tends to shy away from the emotional realm and planners, in practice, assert their distance from attachment. The policy of neighbourhood planning in England is unusual in that it addresses people's emotional commitment to place. An exploration of its passions has much to offer in the understanding of localism and community planning. The chapter reviews the literature on place and place attachment and draws on social movement studies to understand how place is invoked in neighbourhood plans and how place attachment can mobilise collective action. It begins by introducing emplacement as an issue of social policy and a topic of academic and philosophical study. The chapter then moves on to discuss the connections between place attachment and community action and to introduce the concept of place identity framing as a tool of analysis. It also explores research with neighbourhood plans to understand how a convincing narrative of place attachment and place identity can be assembled, and how it can be used to mobilise community support.

Abstract The Conclusion summarizes the key findings of the book and reiterates the importance of logical concepts and processes to literary thinking and writing. It sketches some of the outlines that defined academic and philosophical discussions of logic in the mid- and late seventeenth century, and offers some preliminary suggestions on how we might negotiate the relationships between literature and logic in an intellectual environment increasingly dominated by the parameters of proto-scientific inquiry. The Conclusion ends with a return to the beginnings of logical theory and uses the Aristotelian predicaments, and their reinterpretations in Medieval philosophy, to illustrate the continuing relevance of logical categories to questions of individual selfhood and social identity.

In The Paradoxes of Time Travel Lewis argues that time travel as it is imagined in certain science fiction narratives is a genuine possibility. In his own words, Lewis aimed, ‘(1) to solve a philosophical problem hitherto largely ignored or casually mis-solved by philosophers […]; (2) to introduce the layman to various topics in metaphysics, since our problem turns out to connect with many more familiar ones; and (3) to show several of my favorite doctrines and methods in metaphysics’. In the course of his 6 lectures, Lewis lays out his Quinean four-dimensionalist metaphysics and explains how our ordinary concept of person allows for causal loops. This requires a notion of ‘reverse causation’ which Lewis explains by analysing causation in counterfactual terms. Finally, Lewis elaborates on the sense in which we can and cannot be intelligibly said to be free to change the past.

The article explores the concept of the abyss and its interpretation in the novels by Mamleev “Shatuny” and A. Salnikov “Petrov's Flu”. Mamleev substantiated the concept of the abyss in his philosophical works, and the author explains the paradoxical nature of Russian consciousness by the constant feeling of the abyss.
