Luarasi, Skender 1976. "Urban ideograms." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/30218.
Full textIncludes bibliographical references (p. 69-70).
This thesis offers the concept of Urban Ideograms. It is developed and crystallized through a strategic gathering and selection of specific textual and contextual information from various sources, such as the drawings of Henri Michaux, his poetry and literary commentaries, various architectural examples of park design, psychoanalytical texts that aim towards an understanding of traumatic experience, and a physical site that is the Boston Artery Strip. A central notion of this thesis is that of Ideogram, as understood in the work of Henri Michaux. The Ideogram is seen as a graphic condition that signifies and embodies the Interstitial, those qualities that are absent in the diagram as it is commonly understood and used in architectural practice, such as movement, animation, the poetry of incompletion, the accidental, and what is more important, the mental anticipation of the new, the strange, the future and the unknown. Thus, some of the questions that are investigated in this thesis are: What can the notion of Ideogram, as understood in Michaux's work, offer to the architectural process of form, spatial and programmatic investigation and conception? How can the notion of Ideogram serve as a conceptual tool of material translation and transference across the stages of the design process? How can the Ideogram constitute a generative design process? What does it mean to think ideogrammatically in architecture? Another central notion in my thesis is that of Trauma as it is understood in the writings of Sigmund Freud, Sandor Ferenczi, Maurice Blanchot, Cathy Caruth, and the balletic practice of William Forsythe and their commentaries.
(cont.) The notion of trauma is seen from the perspective of Traumatic Experience, and how this experience as a pathological condition gives rise to the cultural problems of the representation of the past, present and future, reference and perception, and performative potential of the body in general. How is the problem of reference related to the body in architecture and the body of architecture? One part of this thesis treats the physical site as a pretext and explores the concept of the urban folly. The other part treats the site as a context from where we notate, gather and select graphic information that provides a generative platform of design. The intention is to design or generate urban things that act as ideograms, interstitial zones and/or lineages between the disparate urban functions of the site.

Abstract: The Rubiaceae (A. L. de Jussieu) family, order Gentianales, sub-clade Euasteride I, steride clade, is composed by plants of varied habit, comprising one of the largest Angiosperm amilies, with four subfamilies, 637 genera and approximately 10.700 species. The family is cosmopolitan, including species of considerable economic expression like coffee (C. arabica L. and C. canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner), as well as with pharmacological (Cinchona L.) and floristic interest (Gardenia J. Ellis, Ixora L. and Pentas Benth.). It is a great family showing a broad range of distribution, with considerable representation in the Brazilian Cerrado the ecosystem considered in this study. Chromosome analyses were carried out in some species of Rubiaceae belonged to subfamily Rubioideae that occur in areas of Cerrado on the states of São Paulo (Experimental station of Itirapina and Assis and Biological Reserve of Mogi-Guaçu) and Mato Grosso do Sul (Corumbá and Três Lagoas counties). Some chromosome counts were in agreement to literature, as 2n = 20 (Coccocypselum lanceolatum (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers.) and 2n = 22 (Coussarea hydrangeifolia (Benth.) Müll. Arg. and Psychotria hoffmannseggiana (Willd. Ex Roem. & Schult.) Müll. Arg.). On the other hand, new counts werw obtained for genus Rudgea Salisb. (2n = 44 Rudgea viburnoides (Cham.) Benth.), and for Manettia cordifolia Mart. (2n = 66), wich belongs to the Hedyotideae tribe. For Psychotria tribe, we present new data for species from three genera: Decleuxia fruticosa (R. & S.) Kuntze (2n = 20); Palicourea croceoides Ham., P. marcgravii St. Hil. and P. rigida H.B.K., 2n = 22 and Psychotria with 2n = 22 for Psychotria lupulina Benth., P .marginata Sw., P. tenerior (Cham ) M. Arg. and P. trichophora Müll. Arg.; 2n = 40 for Psychotria mapourioides DC. and 2n = 44 for Psychotria carthagenensis Jacq., P. gracilenta M. Arg., P. sessilis (Vell) M. Arg., P. suterella M. Arg. and P. vellosiana Benth. Inedit data of in situ hybridization with the 45S rDNA were obtained for eight species beloning to Psychotrieae tribe, being six for genus Psychotria (Psychotria carthagenensis subgenus Psychotria; Psychotria deflexa, P hoffmannseggiana, P.sciaphila, P. tenerior and P vellosiana, subgenus Heteropsychotria) one for genus Palicourea (Palicourea marcgravii) and one for genus Rudgea (Rudgea viburnoides). The number of rDNA 45S sites varied among species. No relation was observed between the number of rDNA sites and the ploidy level of the species. The in situ hybridization with 45S rDNA was also applied in two species of the Spermacoceae tribe, Borreria latifolia (Aubl.) K. Schum. and B. verticillata (L.) G. Mey. Both species present the same chromosome number and very similar ideograms, but different number of 45S rDNA sites made possible the Karyotype discrimination between the two species of Borreria

Full textAlthough somewhat outdated, the American Marketing Association definition of brand still is largely accepted. In this case, brands are signs for product differentiation. The present research, instead, finds brands and their logos as meaningful signs that belong to the human communicative lexicon. Logos are ideograms, i.e. graphic representations that convey meanings. These meanings are transferred from one mind to other minds through brands, establishing communication between humans, and which is also used to self-monitoring in a self-reflexive process, i.e., reading the reactions of others to the ideographic messages once sent to them. Brands are intimately connected to meta-representational processes, whether they are seen as the repository of human attributes, whether themselves are perceived as interlocutors, in a quasi-human level. It also finds that the human emotion system is used to perceive, interpret, and classify brands. Founding in the neuro-based model of emotions developed by Damásio, the present research reveals that brands systematically recruits the emotion system when stimulate brains, which leads to posit that brands are felt in order to be perceived. It is also largely relying in the brain structures that support emotion processing, but also based in other regions that support self-relatedness processing, that is trained an artificial neural network that yields predictions of subjects' choices at a level much higher than mere chance. This procedure allows a coarse but promising consumers' "mind reading".

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to bring light to the complex relationship between the “body” of the traveller and that of the writer, but also the “corpus” of literary work, in so far as we deal with several travel writers in the Far East from the 19th and 20th centuries. It consists of the works of Segalen, Claudel, Loti, Michaux and David-Néel. Their reflections relate at once to oriental ideograms and the “alternative” religions of the Far East (Tibet, China, Japan), notably Taoism and Buddhism, and, in parallel, to confrontations with the otherness of the “body”.For our problematic of literary space we propose three principal axes, which divide the thesis into three parts, analysing the textual space, the “transcendent” space and then the “interior” space. The interest of this work on the “body” under the exotic gaze is measured against the notion of literary space, which is evaluated in an individual process specific to each of the authors

This research proposes a digital educational game focused on the learning of Japanese kanji. Its fundamentals are culturally based in the Japanese immigration to Brazil and, combined with the concepts and theories of transculturalism and topophilia, lead to a reflection of cultural appreciation and its hybridization. Such approaches fall within the overall context of combinations and adaptations, covering digital productions structured in accordance to concepts and theories from several areas of knowledge. The methodology is to conceive a game based on the difficulties of learning the Japanese language identified in students of non‐Japanese origin and provided by studies from other authors. It is also based on educational, psychological, philosophical and entertainment methodological assumptions organizing themselves in a position to produce an educational game, entertaining above all, that suits the needs of this generation used to challenges and reward systems. Based on such studies, some of the games found on the Internet and in the market were analyzed. It is discussed the transposition among medias, with an approach of the new media, focusing on the indication of the gaming platforms, according to the content. The process of designing and producing the game is optimized by the association of ideas and creation of an structured and elaborate game design documentation. The project creation is guided by the work process flow of a game, in which are demonstrated the steps and interactions between the teams involved in that production. The procedural and technical problems of the participants are reported by the teaching experience in the classroom, better placing and clarifying the title of this research

Full textIn an attempt to open a pathway to other hypothesis in current performative creation, the ideogrammatic poetic logic takes on the role of an agent capable of magnifying and multiplying the spectrum of possible compositional relations in the artistic and performative creation. In assuming that the ideogrammatic poetic logic is a possibility for the creative process of organization and grammatical consciousness to enhance the poetic nature of language, this research took on a historical, theoretical, conceptual and referential approach which culminated in a practical and concrete example of how this poetic logic may be applied to performative creation.

Full textConsidering the literary translation an act of recreation, this dissertation aims to analyze the eight Chinese elegies translated by Camilo Pessanha, establishing relationships between them and this author´s poetry, manifested, principally, in the same thematic that would be present in Clepsydra and in those Ming\'s dynasty poems translated. In this analysis, we will also discuss language and alterity in a dislocating process and the dislocation in the transcriptions of ideograms into Portuguese words, expressions and poetry.

Taking typography as the construction of fonts and the arrangement of letters on any support, this work pretends to show that digital typography has changed the iconic characteristic of written alphabetic languages. The principal iconic trace of ideograms and the way Chinese written signify are shown in order to explain the iconic aspects of written alphabetic languages. Different digital typography are examined through the semiotic theory of Peirce to show that digital age has expanded the visual language of written alphabetic languages making it get similar to ideogramatic system. This comparison may show how the iconicicity of written alphabetic language works in the digital age. Besides Peirce´s semiotic, the studies done by Haroldo de Campos about ideograms, which he used in his concrete poems, are fundamental for this work. The concept of hybridism made by Canclini is used to show how the visual and the verbal languages are intersected. A little bit of written history is shown with Roger Chartier, Foucault and Geoffrey Sampson. Pierre Lévy and Manual Castells are references to explain how digital age works. Questions about the motivation and the arbitrariness of the words are also discussed, because the written alphabet seems to have increased the distance between word and image, creating a conventional and mostly arbitrary verbal language. The pos-modern world tends subtract language, messages have to be understood in a short time and probably this has increased the iconicity of written language because the icon is the most simple sign. In this situation, typography has grown its iconic side. The text is not considered any more as a sequence of letters that have meaning, but also, as a picture that have important imagetic information. Understanding the process of iconicity in written language may show where present communication is going. We could conclude that the flexibility of digital language creates a new perspective for typography. Digital fonts emphasizes the iconicity of written language in many degrees. There are even fonts that don`t use the current alphabet in favor of pictures, creating a very specific text. The digital typography has provided new forms of language hybridism. Letter and image seems to have a new relation in the written language.

Full textThis dissertation aims at discussing two selections of Mário Faustinos work. The first of them comprehends the years from 1956-1959, regarded as his experimental phase. This period has as vector a tension centralized in the main instrument of poetry, the verse. The second is devoted to the analysis of the literary criticism produced during these years, concentrated in the pages of Poesia-Experiência, published in the Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil. The poems before 1956, from which a crisis between the object and its representation is outlined, are the subject of the first chapter. After that, in chapters 2 and 3, we will see as the verse, put in check, sustains to use a jargon of journalism the text and the art of Poesia- Experiência. In the end, we come back to Mários poems, more specifically to those written from 1956-1959, returning to the discussion about the poem and its symbolic representation, in order to seek some fundamental characteristics of Mário Faustinos poetry and criticism in this phase of verse saturation and approximations with concretism.

Full textThe main goal of this study is to investigate how the poet Paulo Leminski reveals language awareness under the haiku form, and expresses his sensibility thought it. Particularly questions how far his poetry reveals the haiku s intellectual structure. To guide our research on Paulo Leminski s work, we studied different procedures present in the eastern haiku, like the connection with the Zen gesture, the rhythm and the visual presentation of the letters and words, trying to capture them throughout his poetries. All kinds of poems and different structure options were selected for the analysis, so we could point its plurality. By translating different imagistic procedures, Leminski builds up a form for his own Brazilian haiku, presenting us the craft of his poetry

________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract
It is the aim of the present research to introduce lexicographic advances in China and to propose a basic bilingual dictionary model for Portuguese–Chinese. This view is largely based on evaluativie studies of Chinese dicionaries by means of modern lexicographic theories of macrostructure and microstructure in dicitionaries. Thus, this research aims at studying the given Chinese lexicography, as well as completing a gap in Sino-Brazilian lexicography. Henceforth, it is our intention to offer a basic bilingual dictionary of Portuguese–Chinese for Chinese students at beginner’s level and also for Brazilian studentso who are interested in an introductionary study of the Chinese language.

Full textThere are many writing systems currently in use around the world. For almost all of them, the basic mechanism is using graphical symbols to represent the sounds of language. A few dozen symbols are enough for this purpose. Japanese writing, however, includes Chinese characters (kanji), which are related not only to sound but also to meaning; since there are many possible meanings, kanji number in the thousands. The complexity of Japanese writing makes it comparatively harder to learn, and harder to process mentally. Why, then, is it still in use? Are there any advantages to such a system? A closer look show that Japanese writing allows modes of expression which would be impossible in a phonetic transcription of speech, or in simpler writing systems. This is an important datum, not only for Japanese studies, but for the linguistic study of writing itself; the Japanese case clearly shows that writing cant be adequately described as merely a visual representation of speech, but must rather be analyzed as an independent system for accessing language. In this dissertation we discuss, from Japanese examples, some of these expressive techniques which can only be realized in a written medium.

Full textComparing Western thought and Chinese thought can be quite enriching, at a time when cultures in general can gain contact, as weil as fee!thrcatencd somctimes. l have tried, starting from modes of writings, at their origins, to figure out the advcnt and development ofthought on both sides. The point was also to choose a field ofexpcriment... 1 have thought that 1 could present 'reality', the 'world', from Western and Chinese approaches, with the efiècts of 'logos' and 'Reason' on one side and Taoist and sometimes Buddhist influences on the other. The 'process' of the world that China was conscious of cou id not allow her to apprchend reality such as Greece, very carly, and later Western thought could conceive it. Indeed, the only thing that would not change in this world is the state of 'impermanence' for China. From the yi jing, the Book of Changes, and ideographie patterns and methods, China wanted to show the world, the whole world. That was a vision definitely different from that of the West... Still, one question remains : where does this vision come from ? From thinkers. from Nature itself ? From modes of writings as human responses ? The exposition that I developed offers a few landmarks on both sidcs, but the question is still an open one
