Abstract:
The translation of Arabic books in Indonesia can’t be separated from some motives. At least, there are five motives of the translation, i.e. religious, educational, economic, ideological, and prevocational motives. Religious motive can be seen in the translator’s statements that his/her works are aimed to get a blessing from Allah. Educational motive can be seen in the fact that these works are aimed to give Islamic knowledge to the muslim community. Economical advantages are the most powerful motivations that publishers try to get by publishing Arabic translations books. In another hand, the ideological motive is one of the factors that the translators or publishers want to propagate their Islamic ideological among Indonesian Muslim community by mean of their translation works. Prevocational motive can be seen in translator intention to stimulate critical Islamic discourse in Indonesia by mean of translating Arabic books written by some Middle East critical writers.

Abstract:
This article applies a three-dimensional framework for the analysis of the role of motivation in foreign policy decision-making to the foreign policy decisions of individuals and cities in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War. First, the authors briefly introduce their framework for analysis. Using the speeches in Thucydides to explicate the motives and goals of individuals and cities, the authors then trace the relationships between the motivational dispositions of foreign policy actors and their foreign policy behaviour. In so doing, they demonstrate both the relevance of a concern with individual motivation for foreign policy analysis and the usefulness of their analytical framework for studying the impact of the relevant motives. The authors also show how ideological statements can be analysed to determine the relative salience of individual motives and collective goals, suggesting a relationship between ideological reasoning and motivational imbalance which can adversely affect the policymaking process. In conclusion, they briefly assess the theoretical and normative as well as practical policy implications of their observations.

Abstract:
Arab literature is undoubtedly the focus of attention of Jewish critics and translators, and their areas of interest in the modern era. And translate it or not realize it. Therefore, the Jewish translators used to translate many of the Arab literary products as the most vital means on the ground, which contribute greatly to the knowledge of the essence of Arab societies and the social transformations therein, so that literature is a mirror of the social, intellectual and political transformations that societies witness. Our research will focus on three prominent translators who have adopted unique trends of translation, in opposition to ideological motives, and led translation activities in different directions: Menachem Kaplwick (1988-1900), Shimon Ballas (1930-2019) and Anton Shammas (1950). All three represent not only three generations of translators who have worked within this translation activity, but also three ideological and ethnic groups of translators: the European-oriented Jewish translators who are the orientalists, and the Jews of Arab culture who maintained their confidence in this culture but who served in their activities and orientations.

Abstract:
Terrorism has long existed throughout history. However the Islamist terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 (known as 9/11) in the United States represented a fundamental turning point and a significant change in the terrorism landscape. Since 9/11, terrorism discourse has dominated not only the media, but also a sense of security and safety globally. Over a decade after 9/11, there was another significant shift with the declaration of a caliphate in June 2014 by terrorist organisation, Daesh. The atrocities committed by and in the name of this terrorist group sparked global outrage and horror and have had long lasting impacts around the world. Despite the fact that the conflict originated in the Middle East, the impact was felt domestically with a number of terrorist attacks perpetrated and planned in Australia in the name of an extremist neojihadist ideology. To understand Islamist terrorism in an Australian context, this thesis explores the factors which have influenced the radicalisation of domestic Islamist terrorists who have engaged in terrorist acts. This is achieved having regard to the characteristics of 194 Islamist terrorists from Australia who engaged in a multitude of terrorist acts between 2001 and 2018 (either domestically or overseas), their motives and the role of social and familial networks on their radicalisation and involvement in terrorism. In responding to the central research question – In an Australian context, what has influenced the radicalisation of Islamist terrorists who have engaged in terrorist acts? – this thesis:

Nordbeck, Oscar, and Alexander Reuter. Thesis, Malmö universitet, Malmö högskola, Institutionen för Urbana Studier (US), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-43799.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on earlier studies, a study has been established to examine why three prevailing municipalities, during 2020 decided to sell parts of their portfolio and how this coincides with their legislated responsibility to provide housing to their citizens. Furthermore, an examination has been made on the sales’ intrusion on the legislated terms of business-like principles. Using a qualitative method with an element of a quantitative concept, a summary of Scanian municipalities’ sales along with their solidity has been done which helped initiate a more detailed document analysis based on differencing values. In this case the chosen municipal housing companies were Trelleborgshem, Bjuvsbostäder and Skurupshem. Empirical data was gathered from publicly available documents from municipalities, which were then analysed in relation to relevant theories.  The common reason for the three municipalities to sell shares of their property portfolio was the need to liquidate capital while the planned area of usage differed. Trelleborgshem wanted to construct new housing while Skurupshem wanted to perform maintenance on existing properties and construct some new housing. Bjuvsbostäder’s reason to sell was to distribute capital to the municipality for them to pay off debts. There is a distinct ideological connection between the outlook of selling and which political party the members of the municipality belong to. Members in right winged parties often vote in favour of selling while left winged party members vote against it. The sales are stated to have a certain effect on the municipalities’ ability to provide housing to their citizens. Trelleborgshem and Bjuvsbostäder warned their respective municipalities that their ability to provide housing was affected by the sales while Skurupshem and Skurup’s municipality agreed that the sale was needed to fulfil their responsibility to provide housing.  Trelleborgshem and Skurupshem acted on business-like principles by selling parts of their property portfolio to be able to finance their new projects, although Trelleborgshem considered there to be room for improvement based on business-like values. Bjuvsbostäder considers their sale to be economically devastating for creating negative results, which is in direct conflict with business-like principles, while Bjuv’s municipality considers Bjuvsbostäder’s analysis on the economic consequences to be flawed. Whether the sale is in accordance with business-like principles, will not be noticeable in current time since the results can change long term.

Abstract: In this present work we verified as the educational proposals expressed in PROEM - Program Expansion, Improvement and Innovation in the Medium Teaching of Parana, in the period of 1995-1999, considering their entails with IDB/BIRD and the conditions requested for the external financing by means of compensation, they answer to financial reasons and they carry out important ideological functions. We demonstrated as, the referred Program, ignores the peculiar conditions of the Brazilian labor market, derived in the peculiar ways of capitalist accumulation in Brazil, and it is more ideological and moved by financial, than functional and " productive " interests for the goals that it proclaims. For so much, we made an analysis of the proposals of the Propam, among them, the subject of the basic preparation for the citizenship and the world of work, as well as the purpose of enlarging the access, the organization, the regionalization of the offer and the objective of facilitating the conditions of having a job and competitiveness of its graduate, including the readjustment of the human resources, financial and of infrastructure. We examined, also, the implications of the financing and external dcdts of the Program, through the loan contracted with IDB ¿ Inter-American Development Bank

Abstract:
In this work the author is trying to describe the features of terror act, identify possibilities of delimitation from other criminal acts. There is created a hypothesis, that in the Penal code of Lithuania Republic the features of terror acts’ consist are not clearly defined. There is emphasized the problem of differentiation of terror, terror act and terrorism concepts. The author is noticing that there are more studies about terrorism, in many cases they are of political or historical character, more analyzing the issues of terrorism, its’ spread ant the activity of terrorist organizations, paying less attention for the analysis of terror acts, that are means for spreading terrorist ideology. Ortega-Marin, Alexander.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research establishes an analysis of the discourse and narrative of the Barranquillan author Marvel Moreno. First, it was necessary to determine the background investigation on the same topic to be able to later elaborate a corpus which took into account the maximum of value judgments about the two notions, consequently. Finally, the reconstruction of the terms racist-code and social-code of the author’s literature, was reconstructed in accordance with the theoretical definitions as well as with the literature itself, analyzing terms such as racism, race, black person or negro, half blood, mulatto, white person, “down at heel person”, an upstart person or parvenu and middle class, aristocracy and bourgeoisie. The pertinent of this study is therefore justified by the absence so far of another study that treats the same chosen narratives and discourses used by the author to explain the social conflict in the fictional Barranquilla. From a methodological point of view, the goal was to see how narrators and characters judge and were judged. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the narrative voices focus on describe the social and racial codes belonging to the upper class, which at the same time and through their prejudices construct the rest of the society validating in this way the elite’s racist and excluding identity

Abstract:
Affected by the death of the revolutionary utopia and the disappointment of the Angolan people, Pepetela’s work questions the Angolan identity: “a Angolanidade”. Through allegory, irony, humour, metonymy, parable and myth, Pepetela denounces the behaviour of the Angolan elite and reinstates certain cultural and ancestral African values long since wiped out by Portuguese colonialism. Pepetela’s work disseminates a strong critique of the post independence Angolan regime while seeking to establish links between tradition and modernity. Our work seeks to demonstrate this fictional reality, whilst giving an analysis of characters who are striving to match their ideology with the reality of the Angolan people. As Aventuras de Ngunga, Muana Puó, A Geração da Utopia, O Desejo de Kianda and Parábola do Cágado Velho are novels which bring into focus certain questions about Angolan identity.Key words: Pepeptela, Angola, revolution, utopia, identity, myth, ideology, tradition, modernity, post-independence

In the dissertation the manifestation of the fairytale motif in the texts, Griet skryf 'n sprokie by Marita van der Vyver (1992), and Weerkaatsings 'n sprokie by Eleanor Baker (1984) is investigated. The purpose is to ascertain the manner in which this "child-centred" genre is transformed on the literary level of the adult reader. To achieve this goal, a conceptualization of the fairytale as an epic genre is firstly undertaken. In the exploration of the genre, the search light does not only focus on the Western but also on the indigenous South African fairytale. Secondly, by means of this theoretical framework, a detailed analysis is made of the manifestation of the fairytale motif in the two primary texts. The elements of the fairytale in Griet skryf 'n sprokie and Weerkaatsings - 'n sprokie are highlighted and the handling thereof comparatively investigated

Jacobs, Martha Christina. Diss., 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2588.

Full text
Abstract:
The central problem in this dissertation entails how the concept volksmoeder (mother of the nation) gradually developed to secure a place in the Afrikaans drama. Chapter 1 determines the hypothesis of this dissertation. Chapter 2 focusses on the volksmoeder characteristics. The conclusion reached in Chapter 2 is that Maria in Langenhoven’s Die vrou van Suid-Afrika (1918) reveals similarities and contrasts with female characters in Dutch plays. Chapter 3 ascertains that characteristics of female personages as mothers of the nation determine their positions in patriarch/volksmoeder relationships in W.A. de Klerk’s Die jaar van die vuur-os (1952). Different types of volksmoeder appear in the above-mentioned farm play and in H.A. Fagan’s Ousus (1934). Chapters 4 and 5 identify how the present day volksmoeder in recent plaasdramas such as Deon Opperman’s Donkerland (1996), André P. Brink’s Die jogger (1997), Ek, Anna van Wyk (1986) and Die koggelaar (1988) by Pieter Fourie, indicate a further development in the concepts patriarch and volksmoeder. In the latter’s Koggelmanderman (2003) the man and woman are removed from the idea of gender.
Verskillende soorte volksmoeder -verskyn in bogenoemde plaasdrama en in H.A.

Abstract:
Abstract:
This chapter explores whether the presence of bad-faith motive is a reliable criterion to identify normatively inappropriate dissent (NID). Rather than appropriate epistemic motives to help advance scientific knowledge, bad-faith motives involve some other objectionable goal: to confuse the public, stall policies that the dissenters dislike, promote particular ideological views, or safeguard profits. This chapter evaluates various ways to explain why bad-faith motives could result in dissent that fails to promote or that impedes scientific progress and it assesses their plausibility. It concludes that in spite of the intuitive appeal of attending to motivations, they cannot serve as a criterion to reliably identify NID.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 describes the phenomenon of state organized crime. It analyses the context in which state organized crime occurs, highlighting the criminogenic mechanisms at play in ‘shadow states’ and kleptocratic regimes. It discusses the motives underlying the involvement of state officials in organized crime, showing that state organized crime may be committed not only for the perpetrators’ personal profit, but also in pursuit of state policy or broader ideological objectives such as international terrorism. It further identifies the actors involved in state organized crime and the means through which it is perpetrated, stressing that state organized crime is committed by senior state officials abusing their authority and using the material and human resources of the state for criminal purposes.

Abstract:
This article explores the concept of genocide in North America. Colonial North America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries constituted an ever growing number of racially and ethnically heterogeneous sites of trade, exploration, and settlement. As Europeans ventured westward into the North American wilderness, territorial expansion, changing land-use patterns, new economic networks, and different systems of coerced labour all motivated settlers to think and act with different colonial motives that contributed to a sense of instability and flux in settler communities. What bound Europeans together, and provided the ideological and political basis for ordering settler societies, was an increasingly explicit racialized anxiety and disgust for Native Americans. The settlers' sense of disgust was important to the genocidal intentions behind different forms of colonial violence.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 traces the emergence and evolution of the climate skeptical narrative in the United States, showing how it has become more ideological over time, in tandem with sociopolitical events and movements. It examines the development and shifts in the narrative from the early twenty-first century to the present through narrative and critical discourse analyses of summary plots of articles and accompanying comments in conservative media outlets over five successive periods of time, providing textual evidence of how the narrative grew increasingly ideological in each period. The following textual analyses illustrate how skeptics have constructed an alternative ideological narrative through invariance, repetition, alternative data, binary frames (us vs. them), attributing sinister motives to and demonizing the other side, and reinforcing positions by sharing the narrative with like-minded people. In so doing, they created their own narrative-network by denaturalizing the dominance of anthropogenic climate change, framing it as unsettled science, and linking it to politics and fundamental American values of freedom.

Abstract:
Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero embodies a connection between political protest and musical technique. The composer’s specific use of dodecaphonic serialism can be interpreted as a reaction to Fascist ideology. Through an analytical narrative from three complementary angles, this chapter highlight how the music carries dramatic and ideological meaning. First, it explores a network of 12-tone rows and combinations projecting specific sounds and gestures acquiring and bestowing meaning through associations, disassociations, and re-associations with text and characters. Second, it investigates the role of “theatrical words,” tracing how word-music dyads develop reciprocal meanings and how individual, detached components lend momentum to the psychological drama. Third, it shows moments of overlapping meanings in which semantically filled musical motifs and/or text phrases combine to create a subplot of motives—an inner action displayed by the music in counterpoint with the drama.

Abstract:
The article analyzes one of the features related to the dialogue between national religious and secular cultures as rendered in M.A. Sholokhov’s ideological-literary world. This is a connection with the canonical parable, i.e., the transformation and dissociation of parable plots, their interaction with the events and literary types created by the writer, and, finally, their authorial renderings and reductions to symbolical images. The author of the novel And Quiet Flows the Don addresses to the Christian subjects and motives so as to actualize their spiritual meanings. The parable as an ontological genre is represented in Sholokhov’s works through the systematic references to Evangelical and Old Testament parables and phraseological units. This textual feature — along with the parable dimension typical for the author’s literary voice — allows to consider Sholokhov’s modifications of parable plots and situations as that ideologicalspiritual narrative basis which largely determines both the authorial style and the multiplicity of its semantic levels: i.e., the synthesis, the interaction between real, plot-archetypal, and literary-philosophical dimensions.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines mass killing by the military government of Guatemala between 1978 and 1983, in which over 100,000 civilians, primarily indigenous Maya, were killed. The military’s atrocities against civilians have often been analysed through a rationalist counter-insurgency lens, in which the violence was strategically motivated and explained by the incentives of an intractable civil war. This chapter shows that, while strategic motives were central to mass killing in Guatemala, the choice for such extreme, wildly disproportionate violence was vitally embedded in the military regime’s ideological infrastructure. The chapter traces the origins of that ideological infrastructure, rooted in Guatemalan racism and anticommunism stretching back to the mid-twentieth century, and radicalized by civil war. It then shows the centrality of racist nationalism and ultraconservative anticommunism, and the justificatory narrative for violence they generated, in the elite decisions, rank-and-file participation, and broader public support for the regime in mass killing.

Abstract:
The chapter extends the argument about media and value conflict between Russia and the United States to the age of Donald Trump. The new value conflict is assessed as especially acute and exacerbated by the US partisan divide. The Russia issue became central because it reflected both political partisanship and the growing value division between Trump voters and the liberal establishment. In addition to explaining the new wave of American Russophobia, the chapter analyzes Russia’s own role and motives. The media are likely to continue the ideological and largely negative coverage of Russia, especially if Washington and Moscow fail to develop a pragmatic form of cooperation.

Abstract Chapter 10 summarizes the motives prompting the invasion of Iraq, examines the consequences of the decision, and assesses the reasons for the chaotic liberation and occupation. Assigning importance to three key factors—fear, power, and hubris—it analyzes the statecraft of President George W. Bush, his ideological predilections, and his practice of coercive diplomacy. It also looks at the behavior of Saddam Hussein, his affinity for weapons of mass destruction, and his impact on American public opinion. When WMD were not found and the occupation transitioned to an insurgency, public support for the war at home eroded and anti-Americanism abroad soared. The tragic consequences of the invasion adumbrated a new epoch in American history.

This chapter presents some information on Turkey, where Turkish is the dominant language and where the majority of the population is Turk. Since the fall of the Ottoman empire in 1923 the language has undergone a series of dramatic changes, known as the language reform, which was inspired by ideological motives to free the Turkish language from foreign influences. Mainly words and grammatical elements from Persian and Arabic were replaced by “pure” Turkish forms. Furthermore, in this chapter it is specified how Turkish fits in the family of Turkic languages and what they have in common. The second section provides a basic inventory of linguistic notions, intended to facilitate an uncomplicated way of explaining the grammatical facts of Turkish.

Abstract:
This Chapter, published by Depends on timing. the journal Asian Ethnology, is a theoretical exercise, inspired by Mary Douglas’s classic anthropological text Purity and Danger, that sets out to clarify the wide range of relationships between religions and humanitarian traditions as ideological movements, taking Islam as an instance. It postulates that the concept of the “sacred” is a special case of boundary maintenance or “purism”. Metaphorically, “puripetal force” (a neologism) is defined as a tendency common to all ideological systems, a resistance to social entropy or anomie. An explanatory model is proposed that accommodates forms of concentrated purism such as (within Islam) Wahhabi-Salafism and (within humanitarianism) the legacy of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Specific Islamic charities and welfare organizations interact differentially with both religious and humanitarian traditions. Meanwhile, US government policy towards charities sometimes seems dominated by an urge to peer into purity of motives. Finally, it is suggested that the model could equally be applied to Christian and other religious traditions, with the concluding thought that the common ground between the institutions of international humanitarianism and religious traditions is currently expanding.

Abstract:
This text tends to shed light on the current position and role of sport, as a kind of contemporary phenomenon, which follows the outlines of dominant global trends, but which, therefore, causes various consequences for individuals, groups and entire societies. It is the result of the analysis of this phenomenon done during the preparation of the master thesis “Sport as a Phenomenon of Contemporary Culture” at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade, and therefore includes one part of it. In considering the phenomenon itself, it starts from the perspective of contemporary cultural studies and tries to see the place of sport in current social movements. Thus, the accent is on its place and role, and also on the causes and consequences of the process of which it is obviously a part of. Starting from its primary features and functions, the focus is on those elements that are an evident part of every sporting event today; the positive ones, which encourage models of behaviour that bring the modern individual closer to the ancient ideals of the athlete, but also the negative ones, which are the reverse of such aspirations, and which today, due to these global trends, are accompanied by the race for money and popularity. These are negativities that have become a completely acceptable component of sport over time, and the consequences of which, however, are not talked about enough, although they are often in the foreground, pushing to the margin those original motives of chivalry and Olympism. In that way, the very essence of the existence of sport and sports competitions is gradually being suppressed.

Abstract:
The possibilities of the documentary film to fix ethnological and ethnographic phenomena in all their audiovisual integrity contributed to the realization of this category of films right from the beginnings of non-fiction cinema. At the «Moldova-film» studio, despite the very vigilant ideological conditions of the totalitarian regime, especially when it came to the cultural heritage of the native people, our filmmakers released a series of films, dedicated to customs, rituals and traditions – important components of our national identity. This category of films has been talked about and written in some specialized studies. The cinematographic works “Trânta/Wrestling” (director Anatol Codru) and “Jocurile copilăriei noastre/The Games of our Childhood” (directors Vlad Druc, Mircea Chistrugă) serve as research topic for us. They are dedicated to popular sports games, which, besides being captivating manifestations that have survived through centuries until the present, are imposed in the context of national identity, but, through this prism, the respective works have not been researched yet.
