Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Between ennoblement and depreciation. Ideological codes of senility in the ninenteenth century Czech literature the case of Karel Václav Rais Interpretations of senility change in time. Successive periods of culture create codes of its description and evaluation on their own. Czech literature which from the very beginning of the nineteenth century was connected with the communication of the ideological, social and political senses of the National Revival and which was treated as the most important instrument of projecting and implementing the great collective ideas, was also directed into including these ideas in all fields of life. The glorification of senility, either as the existential category or the synonym of experience and wisdom was for the first time demonstrated in Božena Němcová’s novel Babička. The high status of this masterpiece caused the many returns of the category of senility in Czech fiction. One of them is Karel Václav Rais prose Pantáta Bezoušek which initiates the discussion on the actual function of the old men/women in contemporary Czech society.

In ‘An Archaeology of Political Discourse?’ I examined the possibility of, and conditions for, rendering Foucault's archaeological method appropriate for ideologico-political analysis. The first part of my reply tackles his initial objection and the next addresses the other two criticisms.

Abstract:
It is a platitude that a political ideology is an organized set of ethical beliefs that authorize the political commitment of a group of people. This article addresses the question: how is the distinctive ideologic of such an organization of ethical ideas related to the political decisions of adherents? The suggestion made is that the distinctive psychological reaction of a group of people to economic and social change plays an important part in making a particular form of ideologic formative of their view of the future. The scope of the article is not restricted to English reactions to the advent of industrial modernity, but the universality of its argument, as to the persuasive function of the ideologics investigated, is primarily illustrated by examples drawn from the works of English ideologues.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
This article argues that Todd McGowan’s revision to classic psychoanalytic film theory (2007) gives us a means of better understanding the ideologic commitments of Downton Abbey (2010‐15). Instead of addressing this question through examination of the politics of the series’ representations or through examination of the genre of the period drama, I use McGowan’s film theory to consider how the series constructs its viewer through ideological operations. Downton Abbey, this article demonstrates, answers the viewer’s desire with fantasy and thus assures viewers of the omnipotence and rightness of the ideological structures under which we live. A comparative examination of Upstairs, Downstairs (1971‐75) reveals that the earlier series ‐ despite thematic and generic similarities ‐ resists solving the viewer’s desire and thus has the radical potential to construct a viewer who is more likely to question ideology. A final comparison of the last minutes of each series demonstrates Downton Abbey’s investment in the fantasy of tradition as well as a current cultural reluctance to productively confront significant social change.
