Abstract:
This work examines the impact of the inverse chirp z-transform (ICZT) for frequency-to-time-domain conversion during image reconstruction of a pre-clinical radar-based breast microwave imaging system operating over 1–8 GHz. Two anthropomorphic breast phantoms were scanned with this system, and the delay-multiply-and-sum beamformer was used to reconstruct images of the phantoms, after using either the ICZT or the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) for frequency-to-time domain conversion. The contrast, localization error, and presence of artifacts in the reconstructions were compared. The use of the IDFT resulted in prominent ring artifacts that were not present when using the ICZT, and the use of the ICZT resulted in higher contrast between the tumor and clutter responses. In one of the phantoms, the tumor response was only visible in reconstructions that used the ICZT. The use of the ICZT evaluated with a time-step size of 11 ps resulted in the reduction of prominent artifacts present when using the IDFT and the successful identification of the tumor response in the reconstructed images.

Abstract:
A high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is one of the major drawbacks to using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The three most effective distortionless techniques for PAPR reduction are partial transmit sequence (PTS), selective mapping (SLM), and tone reservation (TR). However, the high computational complexity due to the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) is a problem with these approaches. Implementation of these techniques typically employ direct computation of the IDFT, which is not the most efficient solution. In this paper, we consider the development and performance analysis of these distortionless techniques in conjunction with low-complexity IFFT algorithms to reduce the PAPR of the OFDM signal. Recently, proposed IFFT-based techniques are shown to substantially reduce the computational complexity and improve PAPR performance.

Cracking is one of the most severe distress modes of asphaltpavements. Thus characterising the fracture resistance properties of asphaltmixtures is the key issue for improving the performance relatedmixture design. The present master thesis project addresses the implementationof the theoretical framework, which is used to characterise thefracture resistance of mixtures based on the SuperPave indirect tensiletest (IDT). An open source Matlab-based software for analysing resilientmodulus, Poisson’s ratio, creep parameters and fracture resistance parametershas been developed. The software analyses the the IDT results, toestimate mixture’s fracture resistance based on hot mix asphalt FractureMechanics. Predictions form the field specimens concerning the fractureresistance obtained from IDT are compared with observed field performance.

Bista, Sulabh. "Assessing the Physical Security of IDFs with PSATool: a Case Study." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2605.

Full text
Abstract:
PSATool is a checklist-based, web-based application for assessing the physical security of Intermediate Distribution Frameworks. IDFs, or wiring closets, are an integral if often neglected component of information security. Earlier work by Timbs (2013) identified 52 IDF-related security requirements based on federal and international standards for physical security. PSATool refines Timbs’ prototype application for IDF assessment, extending it with support for mobile-device-based data entry. PSATool was used to assess 25 IDFs at a regional university, a college and a manufacturing corporation, with an average of 9 minutes per assessment. Network managers and assessors involved in the assessments characterized PSATool as suitable for creating assessments, usable by IT department personnel, and accurate, in terms of its characterizations of IDF status.

Abstract:
Identifying and articulating a research topic and related problems are important processes for novice researchers. However, some novice researchers have trouble in these processes due to their low domain knowledge, low structural knowledge, insufficient metacognition, or insufficient information access skills. This study addressed these problems by developing an information base tool using strategies and tools investigated by previous studies. The tool includes conceptual modeling, guided search, experimental variables and relationships examination, note-taking, suggestion, file import, and review features. The tool was populated with relevant information to permit testing and formative evaluation by novice researchers. Expert reviewers evaluated the effects of each feature of the tool on scaffolding individuals who have low domain knowledge or low structural knowledge and supplementing individuals who have insufficient metacognition or insufficient information access skills. The reviewers commonly agreed that specific components of the tool would be effective in scaffolding individuals who have low domain knowledge or low structural knowledge, or supplementing individuals who have insufficient information access skills.

Abstract:
Ingeniero Civil

Abstract:
Abstract Structure dynamic imaging using a scanning Laser Doppler Velocimeter provides a feasible and efficient means for high-resolution rotational velocity extraction. It shifts the experimentalists’ ground from physical measurement of rotations to mathematical data manipulation and the differentiation of the experimental translational velocity. Consequently, the differentiability of velocity data becomes a major issue since such data are sequences of discrete numbers and are usually noise contaminated. This paper presents an effective method for two-dimensional data set smoothing using one-dimensional Discrete Fourier Transform-Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT-IDFT) process as a lowpass spatial filter. The angular velocities can then be defined analytically by differentiation in the spatial frequency domain. The technique is prototyped with several real experimental data sets from a steel plate excited at its resonance modes. Special attention is paid to the efforts on making 2-D data set periodic in the data frame as well as to the related error analysis. A preliminary criterion is suggested for determination of “spatial frequency truncation” in IDFT.

Abstract:
The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center assessed the administrative, technical, and economic aspects of feasibility related to the procurement and installation of photovoltaic solar systems on IDOT-owned buildings and lands. To address administrative feasibility, we explored three main ways in which IDOT could procure solar projects: power purchase agreement (PPA), direct purchase, and land lease development. Of the three methods, PPA and direct purchase are most applicable for IDOT. While solar development is not free of obstacles for IDOT, it is administratively feasible, and regulatory hurdles can be adequately met given suitable planning and implementation. To evaluate IDOT assets for solar feasibility, more than 1,000 IDOT sites were screened and narrowed using spatial analytic tools. A stakeholder feedback process was used to select five case study sites that allowed for a range of solar development types, from large utility-scale projects to small rooftop systems. To evaluate financial feasibility, discussions with developers and datapoints from the literature were used to create financial models. A large solar project request by IDOT can be expected to generate considerable attention from developers and potentially attractive PPA pricing that would generate immediate cash flow savings for IDOT. Procurement partnerships with other state agencies will create opportunities for even larger projects with better pricing. However, in the near term, it may be difficult for IDOT to identify small rooftop or other small on-site solar projects that are financially feasible. This project identified two especially promising solar sites so that IDOT can evaluate other solar site development opportunities in the future. This project also developed a web-based decision-support tool so IDOT can identify potential sites and develop preliminary indications of feasibility. We recommend that IDOT begin the process of developing at least one of their large sites to support solar electric power generation.
