Abstract:
This article analyzes the concept of "idiostyle", its connection the term "idiolect", researchers’ different views to the co-relation of these two terms, which often contradict each other. The article presents the views of researchers who consider “idiolect” a broader concept, which includes “idiostyle”, those ones who believe, conversely, that “idiostyle” is a hyperonym, and “idiolect” is a hyponym as well as those who consider these concepts to be interchangeable. A conclusion is drawn as to which concept may be considered broader. Various approaches to the study of “idiostyle”, the concept of "translator’s idiostyle" and the influence of the translator's individual style on the author's idiostyle on the example of the works of George Seferis are studied. The stages of formation of the individual style of the writer are also studied in this article, as well as the process of translation of poetic works, features of the external and internal matrix of the poetry, etc. The tasks and difficulties faced by translators in the work on the translation of poetic works are considered in this study. The article examines the difficulties in reproducing the individual style of the author and "muffling" the idiostyle of the translator when translating poetic works. The knowledge of the idiolect of the Greek writer George Seferis has been improved in this article. The main factors of formation of George Seferis's idiostyle are determined. The author’s life path is researched and his poetry is analyzed to determine the characteristic features of his individual style. His life experience, worldview, historical events, traditions and innovations in his works, etc. all formed his specific individual style, which was explored in the article. The poetry of G. Seferis and its translations into Ukrainian by Hellenist translators such as Iryna Betko, Ivan Drach, Svitlana Yovenko, Maryna Maryschuk, Oleksandr Ponomariv, Larysa Skyrda, Tetyana Chernyshova, and Andriy Savenko, are analyzed in terms of reproduction of the internal and external matrix of the poetic work and idiostyle of the writer. The works of different translators are compared in relation to the dominance of their individual style over the idiostyle of the author.

Abstract:
Idiolect of T.T. CloeteIdiolect in particular has a prominent poetical component. In this article it is shown that this view can be traced back to earlier as well as concurrent statements by Cloete, the critic. It is established that the views of Cloete on the essence and meaning of verse as a literary form of art are reflected in his poetry. He has, for example, stated that the visual elements incorporated in modem artistic texts contribute in an essential way to their meaning. This view correlates strongly with his personal style as a poet and the thematic preoccupation with ‘the eye’ in Idiolek. Typical aspects of his lexicon are also determined because the repetitive use of certain words is part and parcel of literary idiolect. A resume of the findings of this article is compared with and corroborated by the reception o f Cloete’s first four volumes of verse. It is concluded that Cloete’s dual role as a poet-critic is complemented by the religious base on which he stands and that these components contribute to the essence and quality of his poetry. In him we indeed have a successful union of instinct, intellect and faith.

Abstract:
The article attempts to categorize such notions as personal language, idiolect and idiostyle in artistic texts. They are decisions and possibilities, which are specific to each author, of developing a message through an individual choice/selection of resources disposed of by the code. The article exposes external linguistic designation of the artistic text’s language with regard to a specified class (category) represented by an author. Two designations are distinguished thereof, i.e. profession-lectal (priests) and bio-lectal (women). Each of these categories of artistic texts’ originators functioned within the specified frames of model texts specific to the distinguished class of authors.

Abstract:
Background: The paper focuses on the communication with a target group within the fitness industry. The purpose was to analyze the idiolect, meaning the distinctive and unique use of language of a Polish fitness trainer, Ewa Chodakowska, and to characterize the role of her specific linguistic choices in the endeavor of encouraging individuals, primarily females, to participate in workouts. Material/Methods: For the development of categories and an understanding of the relationship between the various concepts, the techniques of a grounded theory were used. The method chosen to investigate Chodakowska’s idiolect was the content analysis, in which both written and oral content came under close scrutiny. Results: Chodakowska’s particular style of interacting with fans originates both from a “professiolect” typical of all fitness instructors and her personal attitude to physical activity. The very unique use of language includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. Chodakowska has an informal, direct and personal approach to the followers. By using a ‘we’–form and addressing her female fans with funny and warm expressions as my dearests, my sweethearts, babes, she builds a feeling of group solidarity and develops a long-term customer loyalty. An important part of her idiolect are exaggerated commendations, hyperbolic expressions of applause, sophisticated maxims and adages, by use of which she tries to activate an intrinsic motivation in her fans. Her methodological explanations during workout are extremely illustrative. Noteworthy are her creative and imagine-producing metaphors, including names of her workouts: Scalpel and Killer. Conclusions: It can be argued that her distinctive speech, rather than practical competences within fitness workout planning, is Chodakowska’s main asset and key to popularity.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to present the results of the analysis of the idiolect of the French President Emmanuel Macron in the context of political events presented in the president’s addresses to the nation. The following tasks are solved in the work: the mechanisms of the influence of his speech on the recipient are determined, the aspect of an interdisciplinary dialogue between political science and linguistics is reflected, attention is drawn to the context of the discourse of E. Macron against the backdrop of a changing world, challenges in France's domestic and foreign policy. The analysis of the idiolect of E. Macron from the point of view of the implementation of its communicative functions was also carried out. The conclusion of the article is informative for the increment of knowledge in sociolinguistics and political linguistics. The main result of the study was the conclusion that the individual style of E. Macron is distinguished by the desire for a neat, cautious, but at the same time bold attitude to the word. The specificity of his speech is manifested at all linguistic levels, namely at the phonetic level, clearly defined in terms of diction and arrangement of pauses, linking and accentuation by declaring, at the lexical level in a peculiar choice of vocabulary, in some cases outdated, uncommon words, as well as in the use of metaphors and phraseological units, at the syntactic level – in the use of complex syntactic constructions and anaphoric repetitions. This specificity draws attention to itself, it defines the president’s idiolect as a person striving to take the country's development to a new level, to take care of the nation, at the same time emphasizing his rather tough position in relation to the whole world.

The article deals with the features of the use of language aesthetic means of novostyl’ in the prose texts of the Ukrainian writers, representatives of postmodernism in fiction. In the creative work of the authors (I. Rozdobudko, I. Karpa, Tanya Maliarchuk) the typological features of the renewed idiolect were reflected, a number of changed norms in the system of text creation and image creation were recorded, and innovational processes in modern literary speech were reproduced. The following features are characteristic for their artistic discourse: the updating of the lexicon, the use of non-normative and slang language practices, and the destruction in the organization of the language use. The writers' texts are in close connections, in the language-stylistic sense, while denoting the individual-authorial differences of the idiostyle, the search for peculiar language-literary manners of writing.

And Here Lies a Buried Vampire: Sayings, Proverbs, Idioms in Translations of Selected Works by Andrzej Sapkowski into Russian This paper elaborates on ways of proverbs and sayings transition, presentin A. Sapkowski’s works, into Russian. Gathered material was discussed from the perspective of both original and translation texts. Analysis covered idiomatic phrases, created by the author, as well as real, existingones, that were subjected to different kinds of modifications in the Polishtext. The presence of this kind of stylistic devices can be considered in a context of realization of the author’s idiolect features in translation text, which makes proper transition of described units so vitally important. It is due to the fact that they become a distinctive feature of Sapkowski style, and should be reflected in the Russian text.

Abstract:
Authorship verification rely on identification of a given document is written by a particular author or not. Internally analyzing the document itself with respect to the variations in writing style of the author and identification of the author’s own idiolect is the main context of the authorship verification. Mainly, the detection performance depends on the used feature set for clustering the document. Linguistic features and stylistic features have been utilized for author identification according to the writing style of a particular author. Disclose the shallow changes of the author’s writing style is the major problem which should be addressed in the domain of authorship verification. It motivates the computer science researchers to do research on authorship verification in the field of computer forensics and this research also focuses this problem. The contributions from the research are two folded: Former is introducing a new feature extracting method with Natural Language Processing (NLP) and later is propose a new more efficient linguistic feature set for verification of author of the given document. Experiments on a corpus composed of freely downloadable genuine 19th century English Books and Self Organizing Maps has been used as the classifier to cluster the documents. Proper word segmentation also introduced in this work and it helps to demonstrate that the proposed strategy can produced promising results. Finally, it is realized that more accurate classification is generated by the proposed strategy with extracted linguistic feature set.

Abstract:
The current study aims to establish, if authors idiolect can be recognized in electronic mails language and to determine the features of lexis and graphics, which can be linked to idiolect. The data has been derived from a corpus of 65,000 words consisting of electronic letters written in Lithuanian by six persons. The WordSmith Tools software was used to generate frequency lists of six subcorpora, representing each person’s language. By using the contrastive method the frequency data of six persons language were compared. The lexis and graphics elements, which were used by one person more often or more rarely than by others and were not determined by the topic, were linked to authors idiolect. As a result of the analysis the classification of lexical and graphical elements is given, which can help recognizing idiolect. The study shows that on a lexical level the main differences between idiolects are in the usage of the modality and stance expressing words, and also the words and abbreviations, which are differently chosen from possible variants. On a graphical level idiolects can be recognized from punctuation marks, emoticons and graphic symbols, used at a different frequency. Based on research results the recommendations for authorship attribution examinations are given.

Remiantis atlikto tyrimo rezultatais disertacijoje pateikiamos rekomendacijos teismo lingvistinius autorystės tyrimus atliekantiems ekspertams.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to determine whether fundamental frequency dynamics and vowel formant frequency dynamics (F1, F2 and F3) are useful speaker-specific markers useful for speaker forensic comparison. Both acoustic parameters had been studied in the vocalic sound /a/ because this is one of the most frequently phonemes in Mexican Spanish. Four different corpus have been analyzed to evaluate the discriminatory capacity of both acoustic parameters on two types of speech production – reading and a semi-spontaneous corpus – and in different measurements of time – in apparent and real time corpus. Results indicate that dynamics of F1, F2 and F3 frequencies are more informative of the characteristics of individual speakers than the measure of the midpoint.

Abstract:
Ever since the Harry Potter books started being published, they have triggered much enthusiasm around the world be it in their original English version or in translation. Their British author, J.K. Rowling has been praised for her creativity, and especially for her linguistic inventiveness. The latter – in the first six volumes – is the subject of the present dissertation and so is its trad-aptation into foreign languages – more precisely into French and Dutch. Originally literary works for young people, these books, however, have reached a wider readership, thus becoming cross-over books. This development can be justified by the way the story is expressed – and not only on account of the diegesis itself. This research tries to analyse the various features of the languages which are used and/or invented, on the one hand, and demonstrates that one can refer to the conception of a specific literary idiolect – rowlinguism – studying the cultural references within the language itself in a first part, then the phonological quality and the humour of the text in a second part (plays on sounds and words, visual and oral descriptions, idiolects) before tackling the analysis of passages with different styles and forms. These three aspects are considered both as far as the original text is concerned as well as the foreign versions mentioned above. Indeed, translation is the very subject of the last part, based on both lexical observations on J.K. Rowling’s text and on economical and professional practices (translating, publishing, reading, re-writing). On the other hand, therefore, a conclusion had to be drawn concerning the result, namely it has been easier to translate into Dutch – a Germanic language - than into French – a Latin language – due to available linguistic resources

Abstract:
The framework of the present PhD dissertation is the area that results from the overlap between the field of variationist sociolinguistics and forensic linguistics, which mainly concerns the study of variation between different individuals –inter-speaker variation– and variation within a single individual –intra-speaker variation– for forensic purposes. The primary objective of the present dissertation is twofold. On the one hand, it proposes a protocol for the creation of an Index of Idiolectal Similitude (IIS) for the phonological module of English that can effectively determine whether two oral samples show inter-speaker variation –which would indicate that the samples have been produced by two different individuals– or intra-speaker variation –which would allow to conclude that the samples have been produced by the same individual. On the other hand, the analysis of the fourteen variables proposed in a corpus that contains data on sixteen speakers and that is stratified according to measurement time –as a result of a real time study–, language contact and gender, provides an important contribution to the Base Rate knowledge, which constitutes one of the main challenges of current forensic linguistics. Results show that inter-speaker variation is generally higher than intra-speaker variation, and that a speaker’s idiolectal style remains relatively stable over time. Therefore, the IIS is presented as an innovative quantitative tool which, together with other quantitative and qualitative techniques that the linguist acting as expert witness may have at their disposition, can help reach a conclusion regarding the probability of two samples having been produced or not by the same speaker.

A person’s speaking style, including their voice, the vocabulary they use and the physical actions they employ while speaking, not only expresses their identity but also serves to emphasize the content of an utterance. Speech combining these aspects of speaking style is more vivid to the listener. In recent years, research on speaking style has focused mainly on speech signal processing, which neglects analysis of the text. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to convert a source text into a target text containing a certain person’s speaking style via the speaking style modeling process of idiolect extraction and generation. The first stage of this thesis involves using a statistical method to automatically extract idiolects from the training corpus. Next, the idiolects are classified into two categories. For synonymous idiolects, a mapping table is built, while for superfluous idiolects, an insertion model is used to find suitable positions for insertion. Finally, the input text is modified to contain someone’s speaking style by way of synonym substitution and the insertion of superfluous idiolects. To evaluate the proposed method, experiments were carried out on a corpus collected from the speeches of three Taiwanese politicians. The speeches were manually transcribed; the synonym mapping table and the insertion model were derived from the transcripts. The results show that the proposed method can effectively convert a source text into a target text with speaking style.

Michell, Colin Simon. "Investigating the use of forensic stylistic and stylometric techniques in the analyses of authorship on a publicly accessible social networking site (Facebook)." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13324.

Abstract:
This research study examines the forensic application of a selection of stylistic and stylometric techniques in a simulated authorship attribution case involving texts on the social networking site, Facebook. Eight participants each submitted 2,000 words of self-authored text from their personal Facebook messages, and one of them submitted an extra 2,000 words to act as the ‘disputed text’. The texts were analysed in terms of the first 1,000 words received and then at the 2,000-word level to determine what effect text length has on the effectiveness of the chosen style markers (keywords, function words, most frequently occurring words, punctuation, use of digitally mediated communication features and spelling). It was found that despite accurately identifying the author of the disputed text at the 1,000-word level, the results were not entirely conclusive but at the 2,000-word level the results were more promising, with certain style markers being particularly effective.

Abstract:
Rock and Rhapsodies is the first book-length musicological study of British rock band Queen. It primarily addresses the material written, recorded, and released between 1973 and 1991. The text provides readers with a nuanced analytical account of the group’s songs and illuminates the varied stylistic and historical contexts in which Queen’s music was created. The key conceptual basis for the analysis is an idiolect, which refers to the distinct musical style of a single artist. Having documented the key features of Queen’s idiolect, the book further explores the nature of specific musical characteristic and uses them to respond to a range of wider analytical and discursive issues as pertaining to style, genre, form, time, voice, and historiography. Rock and Rhapsodies comprises twelve chapters. The introduction documents Queen’s place in scholarly literature and unfolds the principal analytical methodology. The following three chapters address the structural details of Queen’s idiolect and songs, before analysing the voices of Queen’s singers. The vocal techniques are related to discourses of authenticity and, in the case of Freddie Mercury, the queer voice. The five subsequent chapters identify the changing and myriad stylistic influences on Queen, as well as relate the band to the major rock movements of the 1970s: hard, glam, and progressive. The final chapter explores the replacement singers, Queen in wider popular media, and the influence of the band, since Mercury’s death in 1991.

Abstract:
The chapter explores reflections on the practice of letter-writing, with equal attention to instructional handbooks (esp. Demetrius’ Περὶ ἑρμηνείας‎, Iulius Victor’s Rhetorica, Pseudo-Demetrius’ Τύποι ἐπιστολικοί‎, Pseudo-Libanius’ Ἐπιστολιμαῖοι χαρακτῆρες‎, and Erasmus of Rotterdam’s De conscribendis epistolis) and the meta-generic statements that letter-writers routinely embed in their correspondence (with a special focus on Cicero, Ovid, Seneca, and Pliny the Younger). In both types of sources, what one might call the social dimension of style registers as a primary concern: in order for the letter to fulfil its purpose, namely to generate a special bond between sender and recipient, the chosen idiolect has to be ‘appropriate’ (πρέπον‎/aptum) to the interpersonal relationship and its specific circumstances and exigencies. Shared stylistic values and the willingness of the letter-writer to adjust his character to that of the recipient generate a sense of community between the correspondents.

Abstract:
This chapter begins from the premise that’s Queen idiolect or ‘sound’ was distinct in popular music. Using the concept of ‘style planets’, the idiolect characteristics are connected to numerous and varied stylistic sources including 1970s hard rock, 1970s Baroque pop, 1960s pop, soul, and pre-WWII American popular song. These influences are identified in the textural structures, performance gestures, and harmonic choices. Using the concept of ‘musical worlding’, it is suggested that a hypothetical listener might regard Queen’s idiolect as predominantly placed within the world of hard rock, but made to sound distinct and unique because of the integration of seemingly incongruous style influences within their songs. This analysis is conducted with primary reference to ‘We Are the Champions’

Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of the popular music literature that has addressed the music of Queen. It is argued that authors have previously been limited in their analysis of Queen’s style because of lacking methodological frameworks. Having introduced and established the concept of idiolect, a specific distinction is drawn between compositional strategies and sonic patterns, which account for the different types of shared characteristics across the band’s output. These ideas are supported through the application of Wittgenstein’s model of ‘family resemblance’, suggesting that some tracks share more resemblances with others, yet they remain part of, and contribute to the overall ‘family’ of Queen’s output. This approach to idiolect is extended to consider how individual tracks are also connected to wider styles, thereby establishing the wider dual framework for subsequent analyses.

Abstract:
Queen’s final album before Mercury’s death was widely viewed as a return to Queen’s distinct style, and also includes a number of reflective lyrics that were likely written with knowledge of the singer’s ill health. It is demonstrated how the title track embodies the idiolect principles of Queen’s 1970s output in terms of exploring new stylistic ground, while staying rooted in the familiar textural and arrangement patterns. Drawing on Said and Straus, Innuendo can be viewed as reflecting a ‘late style’ for Queen, but one that is defined by a retreat to a past musical style of their own, in contrast to other conceptions of this aesthetic defined in relation to classical composers.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys the existence of Queen—as a band and a cultural product—since 1991. It is argued that the ongoing status of Queen is one of protecting and enshrining certain iconic elements of their musical identity: the extravagant and flamboyant performance style of Mercury; the sonic power of their idiolect; and their position in the canon of rock music. These observations are drawn from examination of the replacement vocalists, a major single release in 1997 (‘No One But You’), and the West End musical We Will Rock You. The chapter concludes by considering Queen’s influence on later artists, which is not as widespread as may be intimated from the praise lavished by their successors (such as Dave Grohl or Katy Perry). It is contended that the very nature of Queen’s idiolect meant that such influence is either difficult to discern musically or is limited to a small selection of textural patterns, such as vocal or guitar arrangements.
