Abstract:
The article focuses on the challenges in rendering idiolects of literary characters. Idiolect as a means of speech characterisation of personages enables the researchers to see personages as linguistic personalities. Idiolects can fulfil several functions: comparative, psychological, distinctive, and characterising. It is shown that an integral character image is only possible to depict taking into consideration the specific features of characters’ idiolects, which help the reader to discern a character’s social status, age, educational background, gender, and emotional state. The aim of the article is to identify the challenges in rendering idiolects of literary characters, such as phonetic distortion of words, non-equivalent lexis, and non-standard syntax and to examine the relevant translation strategies and tactics of idiolect reproduction. Based on a comparative analysis of the original and translated texts, the research yielded a number of translation strategies such as the strategy of maximum preservation of idiolect characteristics and the strategy of partial preservation of idiolect characteristics. In the framework of the strategy of maximum preservation of idiolect characteristics, the tactic of parallel translation, the tactic of applying functional equivalents and the tactic of phonetic matching are singled out. In the framework of the strategy of partial preservation of idiolect characteristics, the tactics of compensation, omission, preservation, and substitution are singled out.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the properties of the idiolect used by the main character of Masha and the Bear animated film and the ways in which they are rendered into the Polish language. In the film, the properties of Masha’s idiolect have a characterising function. They are as follows: (1) the repetitiveness of syntactical structures (including exclamatory sentences); (2) linguistic creativeness (i.e. creating occasional vocabulary); (3) the use of colloquial lexis; (4) grammatical and lexical mistakes. The properties of Masha’s idiolect are not always rendered in translation. Therefore, in the target text, there is a character whose linguistic properties are different from the ones she has in the source text. However, the primary task of the translator is to create an equivalent which could be perceived by the target audience as belonging to their native language, devoid of artificiality (especially for children). It is thus frequently related to the necessity to introduce some modifications of the idiolectal properties of the main characters.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the idiolect of Ernestina de Champourcin, a contemporary of the Generation-27, an iconic group of Spanish poets of the 20th century. The authors propose is to consider the poetess's idiolect in the aspect of cultural accommodation beyond the traditional translation discourse, through the analysis of two poetry collections - Presencia a oscuras and Primer exilio which stand at the turn of two stages of Ernestina de Champourcin's creative work. The authors analyse the aesthetic, cognitive and linguistic vectors of the poet's idiolect and systematise the reasons for its dynamics. On the basis of the comparative analysis of the elements of the poetic idiolect of her works of different periods, the authors note that the idiolect evolves in accordance with the conditions created by cultural accommodation, and therefore the consideration of cultural accommodation is possible not only in the context of translation adequacy and equivalence, but also chronologically, at the level of idiolect, as evidenced, in particular, by the use of regional variations of lexical units, syntax and the prevalence of this or that temporal plane. The analysis of idiolect makes it possible to narrow the perspective of the material under study, and thus represents the first link of the work on poetic translation. It is argued that the translation of a poetic text is impossible without considering the internal cultural accommodation of the idiolect, which takes place according to the cultural accommodation of the individual and independently of the translation. Based on their analysis, the authors emphasize the role of idiolect as a key factor in the studies devoted to the chronological description of the creative formation of any poet.

The article analyses the idiolect of the Spanish poet Luis Cernuda (Luis Cernuda; 1902-1963), in the context of interaction with cultural systems new to him. The author analyses the development of his career and points out some general correlations between the linguistic situation in emigration and the transformation of the poet’s idiolect. The elements of Luis Cernuda’s idiolect which allowed to create a linguistic image which could not be radically transformed are disclosed based on the analysed works and their means of expression.

The relevance of the study is conditioned upon the importance of distinguishing the concepts of idiolect, idiostyle, and sociolect in linguistic science, understanding the processes occurring at the border of the terminological field, and using psychological, sociological, and communicative aspects to understand the mechanisms of building these concepts. The purpose of the study is a comparative analysis of linguistic terms based on various criteria, in particular the number of communicants (speakers), social marking or neutrality of the lexical layer, the purpose, conditions, and purposes of the development of certain language layers, the features of the design of lexemes at different levels of the national language (phonological, phonetic, grammatical, morphological, stylistic, syntactic). The main method of research is a theoretical approach to understanding the concepts of idiolect, idiostyle, and sociolect, searching for relationships between them and differences. This study discloses the main intralingual and extralingual factors that contribute to the development, identification, or isolation of these concepts, the features of the coexistence of these terms in contexts with different stylistic content, considers the mechanisms by which the boundaries between these concepts can be outlined, focuses on modern research on the emergence of idiolects, idiostyles, and sociolects. The materials presented in this study will help to further study terminological processes in depth, in particular, contextual and conceptological, global interdisciplinary influences in the national space, mechanisms of isolation and structuring of certain terms to expand or narrow already known meanings.

AbstractQueen's ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (1975) has been the subject of many academic analyses; the song has not been considered, however, in the context of Queen's wider output. This article examines ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in relation to Queen's idiolect as identified from the group's songs written between 1973 and 1975. ‘Idiolect’ refers to the common musical details of an artist's output or segment of their output. I subdivide the category of an idiolect to include sonic patterns and compositional strategies. The former accounts for patterns that are consistent in their presentation across songs, the latter accounts for patterns that differ in their presentation across songs. The formal and harmonic structures of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ reflect the group's common compositional strategies; the song's textural arrangements highlight Queen's sonic patterns. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ occupies a unique place in Queen's output, as the first song to present all the major elements of the group's idiolect.

An increasing amount of sociolinguistic research has been concentrated on diachronic idiolect change: the change of an individual’s dialect over time. This paper adds to this growing topic by analyzing the English idiolect change of Giada De Laurentiis, a heritage speaker of Italian. The study analyzes De Laurentiis’ LOT, START, and GOAT vowels, as well as the voice onset time (VOT) of voiceless stops [k] and [p] by measuring the utterances of the code-switched word ‘mascarpone’ across 20 seasons on television. The data reflect the influence of L2 US English (rhoticity, diphthongization, lengthened VOTs) on heritage Italian in De Laurentiis’ idiolect.

Idiolect of T.T. CloeteIdiolect in particular has a prominent poetical component. In this article it is shown that this view can be traced back to earlier as well as concurrent statements by Cloete, the critic. It is established that the views of Cloete on the essence and meaning of verse as a literary form of art are reflected in his poetry. He has, for example, stated that the visual elements incorporated in modem artistic texts contribute in an essential way to their meaning. This view correlates strongly with his personal style as a poet and the thematic preoccupation with ‘the eye’ in Idiolek. Typical aspects of his lexicon are also determined because the repetitive use of certain words is part and parcel of literary idiolect. A resume of the findings of this article is compared with and corroborated by the reception o f Cloete’s first four volumes of verse. It is concluded that Cloete’s dual role as a poet-critic is complemented by the religious base on which he stands and that these components contribute to the essence and quality of his poetry. In him we indeed have a successful union of instinct, intellect and faith.

The practice of translanguaging offers emergent bilinguals the opportunity to access their full linguistic repertoire. This qualitative study uses the lenses of dynamic bilingualism and idiolect, or one’s own unique language patterns, to explore emergent bilinguals’ translanguaging and reading comprehension strategies during a reading think-aloud, as well as the ways that language factors into the construction of self-identity. Data collected from a think-aloud show that the five fourth-grade students used language flexibly when reading and comprehending the texts that were presented in both Spanish and English. The participants, in follow-up interviews, also explained ways that they use translanguaging strategies when communicating with different audiences and how their identity as bilinguals positions them as mediators of their own language use. These findings support the conclusion that when students’ idiolects are supported and encouraged, they are able to develop positive self-identities.

This article explores the social and literary functions of the loanwords and cases of code-switching in the Gospel of Mark from a sociolinguistic perspective, as a means of understanding better the author and the discursive community for which he writes. Sociolinguistic concepts and definitions that affect the understanding of the different varieties of language will be discussed. These tools will then be applied to the Gospel of Mark to analyze significant aspects of its idiolect, especially those related to Mark’s use of multilingualism. From this analysis conclusions are drawn that illuminate its idiolect from another angle, as well as the social actions that could be carried out by its author through the linguistic strategies that can be recognized from the study of its idiolect.

AbstractOld Greek Job (ogJob) is by one sixth shorter than itsmtcounterpart, which most scholars attribute to the translator, not to a shorter Vorlage. Most arguments however, are circular, since they rely on an evaluation of the translation technique, which is difficult to determine with an unknown Vorlage of the translation. This paper presents a way of sidestepping this problem, by employing the Idiolect Test. In a study, Hebrew idiolect items were compiled and studied for their distribution withinmtJob. Those items hint at a specific language use of one author, or of a small group of authors. The result shows that there is nomtJob idiolect coinciding with the non-translated passages of theogversion. This supports the majority opinion: theogtranslator worked from a long Vorlage and was responsible for the omissions.

AbstractThe language of Qoheleth is characterized by an awkward style and an unusual vocabulary. Past studies have assigned these peculiarities to linguistic factors, assuming that the book reflects an underrepresented dialect or register. The current study aims to expand the boundaries of this discourse by introducing extra-linguistic considerations into the discussion. Qoheleth is the only biblical book that is purely philosophical, focusing on abstract issues such as the purpose of life and the problem of free will. Such philosophical discussions require the use of an abstract terminology. The basic toolkit of any philosopher consists of conceptual phrases such as “time,” “space,” “cosmos,” “humanity,” “meaning,” etc. Yet abstract vocabulary was meager in the Hebrew at the author’s disposal. Paving a pioneering way in the realm of thought, Qoheleth’s author had to create a terminological system capable of expressing his new ideas. This article traces the ways in which the need for a personally-customized philosophical idiom shaped Qoheleth’s language. Exploring the origins of eleven key-terms in the book, this article reveals the dynamics that gave rise to Qoheleth’s personal lexicon. These include generalization and conceptualization of the extant semantic fields of certain terms in order to re-invent them as personal expressions reflecting the author’s philosophy. The author takes advantage of the “linguistic availability” of certain terms, that is, their foreignness or rareness that makes them better-suited, in his view, to bear newly created meanings. Taken together, Qoheleth’s neologisms constitute a personal idiolect, carefully designed to convey the author’s unique thought.

The results of research on the use of the minang-Indonesian idiolect language by 5th semester Indonesia language education language students are researchers finding a problem from interviews that the resource person said when speaking in Indonesian there are letters that he emphasizes such as the letter E. Everyday he always communicates with friends using Minang language so when asked to speak Indonesian a little bit differently, the idolek he uses is still minang idiolek.

Abstract This paper describes the analysis of possible differentiation of the author’s idiolect in the space of semantic fields; it also analyzes the clustering of text documents in the vector space of semantic fields and in the semantic space with orthogonal basis. The analysis showed that using the vector space model on the basis of semantic fields is efficient in cluster analysis algorithms of author’s texts in English fiction. The study of the distribution of authors' texts in the cluster structure showed the presence of the areas of semantic space that represent the idiolects of individual authors. Such areas are described by the clusters where only one author dominates. The clusters, where the texts of several authors dominate, can be considered as areas of semantic similarity of author’s styles. SVD factorization of the semantic fields matrix makes it possible to reduce significantly the dimension of the semantic space in the cluster analysis of author’s texts. Using the clustering of the semantic field vector space can be efficient in a comparative analysis of author's styles and idiolects. The clusters of some authors' idiolects are semantically invariant and do not depend on any changes in the basis of the semantic space and clustering method.

Word prediction, or predictive editing, has a long history as a tool for augmentative and assistive communication. Improvements in the state-of-the-art can still be achieved, for instance by training personalized statistical language models. We developed the word prediction system Soothsayer. The main innovation of Soothsayer is that it not only uses idiolects, the language of one individual person, as training data, but also sociolects, the language of the social circle around that person. We use Twitter for data collection and experimentation. The idiolect models are based on individual Twitter feeds, the sociolect models are based on the tweets of a particular person and the tweets of the people he often communicates with. The sociolect approach achieved the best results. For a number of users, more than 50% of the keystrokes could have been saved if they had used Soothsayer.

The article analyzes the lexical oppositions in V. Bazilevsky’s poetic dictionary. The productivity of antonymic pairs, the components of which represent the religious ideas of a person: soul – body, spirit – body, and heaven – hell, is traced. Individual authorial genitive metaphors typical for the artist’s idiostyle, based on semantically opposed lexemes, which testify to the originality of the poetic perception of the world, have been identified. The poetic contexts, in which the direct and figurative meanings of antonymic polysemes are realized, are described. With the help of the parallel use of direct and figurative meanings of contrasting lexemes, the author achieves a specific sensory image. Individually authored antonymic phrases for common sayings (black world – white world, angel of existence – angel of death, room of laughter – room of tears) that enrich the poetic language have been identified. Syntactic and stylistic constructions that enhance the expressiveness of linguistic contrast are characterized: 1) parcellation; 2) identification of depicted contrasting phenomena; 3) denial of depicted contrasting phenomena; 4) chiasm; 5) refrain; 6) anepiphora; 7) constructions based on double opposition. The analysis of the actual material proved that antitheses in the studied texts are a productive means of creating contrasting characteristics of characters, conveying polar emotions, emphasizing the contrast of depicted objects and phenomena of objective reality, etc. Productivity in the poetic idiolect of V. Bazilevsky of oppositions, which ensure the creation of polar images and pictures of the surrounding world, testifies to antithetical thinking, a multifaceted idea of the complexity and contradictions of human life, a sharpened author’s perception of reality, and a tendency to reflection.

AbstractThe present contribution treats hapax legomena in the Fourth Gospel. The author presents three important findings. First, John has few hapaxes in his gospel (84) and only five hapaxes are unique (i.e. these words are mainly used after the composition of the Fourth Gospel). Second, the presence of hapaxes could be an indicator of orality and memory. Third, in several instances John uses hapaxes in conjunction with repetitions in two ways: 1) In John 2:14-16; 12:14; 18:3; 19:39-40 a hapax is followed by a (more) common word that belongs to the same semantic domain as the hapax. The common word repeats and clarifies the meaning of the hapax to the audience; 2) In John 4:7, 11, 15, 20-24; 9:1-2, 6, 8; 11:11-13; 13:5 a hapax is created by means of a stem-related word. The alteration between repetition and hapaxes helps the audience to focus on the narrative and follow the line of thought.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the study of communicatively conditioned professional idiolect and the emotional speech of a diplomat by means of quantitative computer content analysis and semantic analysis. The characteristics of a professional diplomat’s idiolect, changes in speech that have occurred over time are determined. Particular attention is paid to lexical units, a change in connotations, the degree of overall emotional performance, as well as clichés and aphorisms. The concept of “implicitly emotive diplomatic clichés” is introduced, which is characteristic of the type of discourse under study. According to the results of the study, it is concluded that a professional idiolect is expressed in the skillful switching of speech codes, the rejection of pragmatic appraisal, the ability to explicitly express an appraisal using facts and the exact use of changing connotations, as well as implicitly emotive diplomatic clichés, which allows a diplomat through a “delegated subject” express the country’s attitude to current events, but remain within the framework of the diplomatic speech protocol. The study allows us to come closer to a clearer and deeper understanding of the phenomenon of a professional diplomat’s idiolect as a complex set of speech and textual practices aimed at solving complex international problems in a peaceful way, i.e. verbally. The research material was S.V. Lavrov as the Permanent Representative to the UN Security Council speeches on the theme of ‘peacekeeping’ stored in the Security Council digital archive for 1994-2004, as well as the material of the press conference on 01/17/2020 as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The article focuses on interjections that constitute idiolect of The Simpsons characters. For this purpose the subcorpora of Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson, Bart Simpson and Krusty the Clown have been analyzed by means of corpus and discourse analysis. A focus is made on wordlists and keyword lists that identify statistically the most frequent and salient words of the corpora. The results of the paper show that the most significant interjections and interjectional phrases in characters’ subcorpora are catchphrases that make their idiolect different from others. Thus, interjections not only express characters’ attitude or reaction to a situation but also reveal their personal traits.

Wojciech Piotrowicz (born in 1940) is a Vilnius poet, prose writer, translator, journalist, social and cultural activist. He is the author of several poetry collections and volumes of memoirs. Research on which this paper is based consists of two main parts: we present the writer’s biography, which introduces a representative of the Polish intelligentsia in Lithuania, and an analysis of his lexis from his collection of short stories Moja czasoprzestrzeń (My Space-Time) (2015). The aim of the research is to investigate the lexical layers in the idiolect of the writer. Piotrowicz’s idiolect is the domain where the erudite vocabulary of the standard language blends in with the dialectical vocabulary of the Švenčionys district, in which words of rural life are frequent. In the vocabulary of his idiolect, we distinguish the following groups of lexemes: words from family language, archaisms, dialect words, and postwar Russian borrowings, referred to as “Soviet words”. The multi-layer nature of Piotrowicz’s idio­lect is a result of a complicated reality on the border between cultures, languages, times, and evidence of changes in social stratification. To summarize the research results, it can be stated that the analysis of 179 words (phrases) from the writer’s individual language shows a world of concepts, thoughts, and values that are characteristic of representatives of the intelligentsia of peasant origin, born in the 1940s. The authors of the paper consider that this study is only a contribution toward determining the peculiarities of the Polish language spoken by the intelligentsia in Lithuania in the 20th century, and that this article does not exhaust all issues of Wojciech Piotrowicz’s idiolect.

While the study of idiolect is a neglected area in corpus linguistics, the present article suggests that it can be fruitful. As a tool for studying an idiolect, the three-million-word Tony Blair Corpus is introduced. The maximiser collocations occurring in this corpus are compared to those in the BNC in order to identify those which are truly typical of the individual. A quantitative analysis involving three measures of collocational strength (normalised frequency, Mutual Information and log-likelihood) provide candidate collocations which strongly diverge in the two corpora. These are then subjected to tests of synonym preference and register specificity, resulting in a small number of collocations which can count as Blairisms.

This research is qualitative research with a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study are in the form of captions or written expressions on Girl Squad’s Instagram uploads. Data sources were obtained from public social media Instagram of Girl Squad member figures. Data collection techniques are collected through documentation, listening, and note-taking. Data analysis was carried out in the interactive study by classifying data taken in written expressions on the Instagram caption of Girl Squad members who then organized and concluded indoglish languages and Idioms. The result of this study indicates the indoglish phenomenon that occurs in the upload of written expressions on the public Instagram figure of Girl Squad. Also, idiolect was found in several public members of the Girl Squad figure. Indoglish language patterns found include (1) prefix insertions, (2) suffix insertions, and (3) pronouns. Idiolect language patterns found include (1) word emphasis, (2) adaptation, (3) creation or formation of new words, and (4) contemporary language.</span></p>

The article deals with the usage of punctuation marks in the emails of six different authors. Punctuation marks belong to the graphical level of a text, which makes the electronic discourse more distant from standard written language. As a result, a prediction is made that in the electronic communication punctuation marks may be used specifically. The aim of the article is to determine whether punctuation in electronic mail can be linked with the author's idiolect. The corpus of electronic messages under investigation consists of 65,090 words. In total, there are 13,548 punctuation marks used in it. In the present analysis of punctuation, an attempt is made to measure the total number of punctuation marks as well as the number of them as used by each author. In addition the situations in which each punctuation mark is used are also investigated. In the analysis of general tendencies in punctuation mark usage, it has been noted that many different punctuation marks are used in electronic messages. The most numerous marks have proved to be regular ones such as commas, full stops, question marks, dashes, suspension points, brackets, quotation marks, and exclamation marks. The punctuation marks that are used sparingly in traditional written language and electronic communication (various combinations of different punctuation marks, non-traditional variants of punctuation marks, slashes, semicolons) could have the identification value if they were used frequently by any of the authors in their texts.

The article deals with the structural-semantic analysis of the linguistic terminology represented in J.-B. Rudnytsky’s scientific papers. The scientist’s approaches to term formation, ways of introducing the term into the text, interpretation of its meaning, description of situations of terminological instability, etc. have been outlined. The specific Ukrainian terms used by the linguist have been characterized on a semantic criterion. Among them are the names of sections of linguistics, linguistic phenomena, parts of speech and their types, grammatical categories and forms of their expression, types of names and word forms, names of different groups of words, affixes, and their varieties, types of sounds, graphic and punctuation marks. The structural features of the linguistic terms inherent in J.-B. Rudnytsky’s scientific idiolect (uniterms, composites, complex terms) has been defined. Terms with an adjective component are considered as a specific feature of the scientist’s idiolect. According to semantics, terms for denotation linguistic phenomena, types of language, grammatical forms, categories of tokens, sets, punctuation marks, etc. have been singled out among them. The influence of the Western Ukrainian version of the Ukrainian language on the style of Prof. J.-B. Rudnytsky’s scientific studies, in particular, linguistic terminology have been revealed. The most frequent linguistic terms of foreign origin from the researcher’s idiolexicon have been grouped on a structural criterion. The author outlines the word-forming models of term formation, characterizes the individual scientific style of J.-B. Rudnytsky, comparing them with modern trends in the development of the Ukrainian language and its terminology. The article analyzes the manifestation of terminological synonymy in the scientist’s linguistic explorations, identifies the most common terminological hyperonyms represented in his scientific texts on linguistics.

This article analyzes the concept of "idiostyle", its connection the term "idiolect", researchers’ different views to the co-relation of these two terms, which often contradict each other. The article presents the views of researchers who consider “idiolect” a broader concept, which includes “idiostyle”, those ones who believe, conversely, that “idiostyle” is a hyperonym, and “idiolect” is a hyponym as well as those who consider these concepts to be interchangeable. A conclusion is drawn as to which concept may be considered broader. Various approaches to the study of “idiostyle”, the concept of "translator’s idiostyle" and the influence of the translator's individual style on the author's idiostyle on the example of the works of George Seferis are studied. The stages of formation of the individual style of the writer are also studied in this article, as well as the process of translation of poetic works, features of the external and internal matrix of the poetry, etc. The tasks and difficulties faced by translators in the work on the translation of poetic works are considered in this study. The article examines the difficulties in reproducing the individual style of the author and "muffling" the idiostyle of the translator when translating poetic works. The knowledge of the idiolect of the Greek writer George Seferis has been improved in this article. The main factors of formation of George Seferis's idiostyle are determined. The author’s life path is researched and his poetry is analyzed to determine the characteristic features of his individual style. His life experience, worldview, historical events, traditions and innovations in his works, etc. all formed his specific individual style, which was explored in the article. The poetry of G. Seferis and its translations into Ukrainian by Hellenist translators such as Iryna Betko, Ivan Drach, Svitlana Yovenko, Maryna Maryschuk, Oleksandr Ponomariv, Larysa Skyrda, Tetyana Chernyshova, and Andriy Savenko, are analyzed in terms of reproduction of the internal and external matrix of the poetic work and idiostyle of the writer. The works of different translators are compared in relation to the dominance of their individual style over the idiostyle of the author.

Abstract This paper investigates the contribution of author/idiolect vs. register/type-of-text – as the most salient factors influencing the final shape of a text – towards explaining the variation observed in Czech texts. Since it is almost impossible to explore the effect of these factors on authentic data, we used elicited letters collected in a fully crossed experimental design (representative sample of 200 authors × four elicitation scenarios serving as a proxy to register variation). The variation encompassed by the elicited texts is analyzed through the lens of a general-purpose multi-dimensional model of Czech. Using triangulation via three established statistical methods and one devised for the purpose of this study, we find that register matters a great deal, explaining 1.5 times as much variation overall as idiolect. This should be taken into account when designing research in sociolinguistics or variation studies in general.

Previous scholarship on Jane Austen has often commented on the moral overtones of her lexical choices; more specifically, the fact that “incorrect” lexical innovations and fashionable words (i.e. new usages) tend to be deployed as part of the idiolect of foolish, gullible or morally reprehensible characters. By contrast, ethically sound characters normally move within the limits of established (‘old’) usages and the “correct” Standard English repertoire. Taking the historical linguistic concept of subjectivisation as starting point, this case-study explores the use of two adjectives ( lovely and nice) in Austen’s novels. The article (a) demonstrates that a straightforward socio-moral classification of ‘old’ and ‘new’ word-senses in Austen’s fiction is not fully adequate and (b) advocates, in line with recent scholarship, a more nuanced approach to the study of her fictional vocabulary, where old and new senses of a word (in this case, lovely and nice) move across the idiolect of different character-types for ironic, character- and plot-building purposes.

The following is a personal enquiry into how our view of the world may be affected in some very specific ways by the language we speak, and more particularly the way we write, with specific reference to consensus and norms. These musings have arisen over many years of working as a translator, and are based on my interactions as an English speaker with texts in many European, and to a lesser extent, Polynesian languages. The English I speak of here is mainly my English, perhaps my idiolect as a 58-year-old New Zealander. Some of the preferences I mention may be less applicable in British English, for example, but every native speaker's idiolect reflects something of the language as a whole, and I hope my readers will identify linguistically with some of what I am saying. I hope I may be forgiven for writing rather colloquially and in the first person. This choice is entirely consistent with my subject-matter, however, as will become evident.

Abstract The paper describes the analysis of frequency distribution of semantic fields of nouns and verbs in the texts of English fiction. To such distributions, we applied Shapiro-Wilk test. The null hypothesis of normal distribution of semantic fields frequencies in the array of texts under analysis is rejected for some semantic fields. This makes it possible to consider the frequency distribution of semantic fields as a categorized mixture of normal distributions. As a factor of categorization, we chose text authorship. We divided the author’s categories with rejected hypothesis of normal distribution into subcategories with normal distribution. Paired Student’s t-test for the distributions of semantic fields in the texts of different authors revealed a measure of authorship representation in the structure of semantic fields. The analysis of the results showed that the author’s idiolect is represented in the vector space of semantic fields. Such a space can be used in the analysis of the authorship and author’s idiolect of texts.

Background: The paper focuses on the communication with a target group within the fitness industry. The purpose was to analyze the idiolect, meaning the distinctive and unique use of language of a Polish fitness trainer, Ewa Chodakowska, and to characterize the role of her specific linguistic choices in the endeavor of encouraging individuals, primarily females, to participate in workouts. Material/Methods: For the development of categories and an understanding of the relationship between the various concepts, the techniques of a grounded theory were used. The method chosen to investigate Chodakowska’s idiolect was the content analysis, in which both written and oral content came under close scrutiny. Results: Chodakowska’s particular style of interacting with fans originates both from a “professiolect” typical of all fitness instructors and her personal attitude to physical activity. The very unique use of language includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. Chodakowska has an informal, direct and personal approach to the followers. By using a ‘we’–form and addressing her female fans with funny and warm expressions as my dearests, my sweethearts, babes, she builds a feeling of group solidarity and develops a long-term customer loyalty. An important part of her idiolect are exaggerated commendations, hyperbolic expressions of applause, sophisticated maxims and adages, by use of which she tries to activate an intrinsic motivation in her fans. Her methodological explanations during workout are extremely illustrative. Noteworthy are her creative and imagine-producing metaphors, including names of her workouts: Scalpel and Killer. Conclusions: It can be argued that her distinctive speech, rather than practical competences within fitness workout planning, is Chodakowska’s main asset and key to popularity.

In the paper, which is a continuation of a number of studies on individual writer’s semantics in idiolects, the author has analyzed the meaning of the concept widnokrąg (the horizon), which functions as a keyword in the novel “Widnokrąg” written by Polish writer W. Myśliwski. The definitions of keywords, established in the theoretical literature, are emphasized, the most important of them is spotlighted: keywords are related to the ideological and thematic content of the work/works, conceptual ideas of the author, verbalized figuratively and literally. The word widnokrąg of Myśliwski’s idiolect in relation to the specified determinants has been analyzed. Taking into account the lexicographic sources, the common language structure of the meanings of the polynominals widnokrąg and виднокруг and their synonyms horyzont and горизонт in Polish and Ukrainian languages are compared. Taking into account the contextual analysis, it was found out that the word widnokrąg in the W. Myśliwski’s idiolect functions in common terms: ‛place of apparent collision of the sky with land or sea’ and ‛part of the earth’s surface that can be seen in the open’; and is also actualized in ancient mythological meanings as ‛the place of collision of this and that world’, ‛the place of transition to the after life’. In addition, the keyword compared acquires the individual authorial meaning of ‛fate’. It is produced in the text by metonymical extending of the figurative meaning ‛surroundings, environment of something or someone’ established in Polish, supplemented by a metaphorical transcendental connotation. The metonymic narrowing of the meanings of ‛environment’ and ‛space’ determines of the phrase the center of the horizon the semantics ‛native place’. The writer, having his own vision, perception of reality denotation, makes changes in the established category in the language “distinction and reduction or elimination” of its features, encoding them in the individual sense. Therefore, the study of individual author’s semantics of keywords also supports our better understanding of the author’s world picture. In particular, our study highlights fragments of the narrator’s world picture, which preserves the ancient ideas of mythological consciousness and ancient, but still active in Poland the rites of commemoration of ancestors.

The aim of this paper is to present the application of a multimodal approach to the analysis of the writer’s lexicon. The versatility of the anthropocentric paradigm of modern linguistics and the approaches applied in our research are mindful of the choice of relevant research methods. The features of a writer’s lexicon (or idiolect in a broader sense) have been of great interest among scholars though they have been mostly explored by literary critics. Nowadays, more linguists are also interested in thorough research on the subject by applying more rigorous scientific methods like quantitative and statistical ones. The paper herewith focuses on a few of them as a preliminary attempt to showcase some results. The primary concern is to make this study corpus-based. Hence it is crucial to create a corpus of works based on the generally acknowledged rules and principles. Therefore, such a corpus may contribute to the development of corpus linguistics and be applicable to other research regarding studying the writer’s idiolect. Another point of interest is that such research may either support or somehow disprove established views regarding the writing style of a certain author (that is very useful when considering author attribution issues or even forensic linguistics, though that is not the case of the given research). Finally, lexical semantics plays one of the leading roles in defining dominant concepts of an author’s writing style corresponding to the cognitive linguistics domain. As a result of such an approach, it may help to construct the lexicon of the author into an ideographic entity. Furthermore, similar findings or comparative analysis of corresponding objects of study may contribute to displaying the author’s outlook and subsequently that of the whole nation.
