Technological advances have assisted in the development of modern software tools which can be used to assess and improve the energy efficiency of a building at the early stage of conceptual design. However, this study aims at validating the accuracy of one of the paramount building simulation software Integrated Environmental Solutions - Virtual Environment (IES-VE), widely used today. The methodology of this study involves physical measurements and simulation exercises. A longitudinal physical measurement was carried out using HOBO ware U-12 in 5 different points of the room space from 18th O

This study focused on the energy consumption and environmental comfort of the traditional Xindian Central Public Retail Market. Established for more than 30 years, the market has been a crucial role in the daily life of local residents. Thus, the energy consumption and comfort level of the market are subjects of great concern. By using green building information modeling (BIM) simulation, which is an innovative assessment process that combines green buildings and BIM for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries to achieve sustainability, this study explored the current

The relationship between outdoor microclimate and indoor building conditions requires the input of hourly weather data on the typical meteorological characteristics of the specific location. These data, known as typical meteorological year (TMY), are mainly deduced from the multi-year records of meteorological stations outside urban centres, preventing the actual complex interactions between solar radiation, wind speed, and high urban density. These factors create the urban heat island effect and higher ambient air temperatures, skewing the assumptions for energy demand in buildings. This pape

The objective of this study is to investigate the file exchange compatibility of BIM based building energy simulation tools, especially focusing on various irregular building geometry shapes. As a base building modeling software, AUTOCAD Revit was selected and various building geometry shapes were created using Revit, such as curved and pitched walls, roofs, slabs with various air-conditioning zones. And these various shaped building zones were imported to ECOTECT, IES/VE and Openstudio for EnergyPlus, which are professional building energy simulation tools. Through this create-import process,

The project investigated the potential of building geometry to minimize energy consumption in office buildings. Five distinct geometries were modeled as mid-size office occupancies in the context of Toronto, Ontario, and examined with varied design parameters: window to wall ratio (WWR) and external static shading devices. IES VE software was used to predict the annual energy consumption of the five archetypes for 40 permutations. The outcome of this research showed that the variation of the total energy use from one shape to another was relatively small. WWR appeared to have a stronger impact

The aim of this research is to investigate the energy sustainability of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and straw residential buildings in the Cold and Severe Cold Regions of China. In the study, three building materials, namely reinforced concrete (RC), CLT, and straw bale, are used separately to design the building envelope in reference residential buildings in different climate zones. The energy consumption during the operation phase of these buildings is then simulated using Integrated Environmental Solutions—Virtual Environment software (IES-VE).
