Abstract:
This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing tomato marketing in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. Primary data were collected from a total of 100 tomato marketers using a multistage sampling technique. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and multiple regression analysis. The result obtained revealed that wholesalers had a higher gross margin than retailers. Gender, education level and transportation costs were found to influence the marketing margin of retailers, whereas household size and transportation costs influenced the marketing margin of wholesalers. The study therefore recommends that tomato marketers should be encouraged into wholesale marketing. This can be achieved by subsidization and the implementation of an efficient marketing system.

Abstract:
Geological and geophysical investigations were conducted to assess the competence and structural integrity of the foundation site of the proposed Ife-dam at Kajola Village, Ile-Ife, Southwestern Nigeria. Geological investigation along the two (2) proposed dam axes revealed that the overburden material is loose to dense with angular shearing resistance (ɸ) of 27o to 41o. The soils are predominantly elastic silts; cohesive with considerable strength and stability. Geophysical investigation involving the Schlumberger Vertical Electrical Sounding delineated four (4) lithologies namely: topsoil with resistivity of 69 – 558 Ωm and thickness between 1.5 and 4.0 m; weathered sandy layer with resistivity from 123 – 586 Ωm and thickness between 6.5 and 20.4 m; partially weathered/ fractured basement with resistivity from 60 – 220 Ωm and thickness between 6.5 and 14.0 m; and the fresh basement rock with resistivity from 1337 – 10683 Ωm. There are indications of fractures at a depth of 32 m beneath Axis B extending to Axis A at a depth of 35 m. The subsurface materials are suitable to host a dam. Axis B is more appropriate for the dam axis, although the fracture zone should be factored into the design of the dam to prevent water seepage.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) and immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) are commonly used to screen and monitor monoclonal gammopathies. Currently, there are no consensus guidelines on optimal testing frequency leading to overutilization. Here we examined the testing frequencies of SPE and IFE in our institution to provide an evidence-based perspective on efficient test utilization. Methods We retrospectively reviewed all SPE and IFE tests performed in 2018. Ordering patterns and testing frequencies were analyzed. In cases with more than monthly repeats, electronic medical records were reviewed to follow the result changes over time. Results There were 10,054 SPE and 4,248 IFE orders in 2018. The 4,248 IFE cases represented 2,439 patients, among whom 104 patients (4.3%) had IFE repeated more frequently than every 2 months and 50 patients (2%) more frequently than monthly. The 10,054 SPE cases represented 5,472 patients; 127 patients (2.3%) had SPE performed more than 12 times. Rare cases (0.1%) had SPE and IFE repeated every 1 to 2 weeks. Most IFE tests were ordered together with SPE (89% of all IFE orders), among which 28% of cases had normal SPE findings. Among the cases with more than monthly SPE and IFE tests, IFE results showed meaningful interpretation changes in a minimum period of 2 to 3 months; 35% cases had no IFE interpretation changes throughout the year. In contrast, during active treatment period of multiple myeloma, SPE detected paraprotein level change weekly. Conclusion IFE is overutilized and monthly monitoring does not add value even during active treatment of multiple myeloma. Our results support the need for the development of testing frequency guidelines to avoid overutilization and provide more cost-effective patient care.

Abstract:
In recent years, numerous single-image dehazing algorithms have made significant progress; however, dehazing still presents a challenge, particularly in complex real-world scenarios. In fact, single-image dehazing is an inherently ill-posed problem, as scene transmission relies on unknown and nonhomogeneous depth information. This study proposes a novel end-to-end single-image dehazing method called the Integrated Feature Extraction Network (IFE-Net). Instead of estimating the transmission matrix and atmospheric light separately, IFE-Net directly generates the clean image using a lightweight CNN. During the dehazing process, texture details are often lost. To address this issue, an attention mechanism module is introduced in IFE-Net to handle different information impartially. Additionally, a new nonlinear activation function is proposed in IFE-Net, known as a bilateral constrained rectifier linear unit (BCReLU). Extensive experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of IFE-Net. The results demonstrate that IFE-Net outperforms other single-image haze removal algorithms in terms of both PSNR and SSIM. In the SOTS dataset, IFE-Net achieves a PSNR value of 24.63 and an SSIM value of 0.905. In the ITS dataset, the PSNR value is 25.62, and the SSIM value reaches 0.925. The quantitative results of the synthesized images are either superior to or comparable with those obtained via other advanced algorithms. Moreover, IFE-Net also exhibits significant subjective visual quality advantages.

Abstract:
Translation initiation factor eIF4E binds the m(7)G cap of eukaryotic mRNAs and mediates recruitment of mRNA to the ribosome during cap-dependent translation initiation. This event is the rate-limiting step of translation and a major target for translational control. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, about 70% of genes express mRNAs with an unusual cap structure containing m(3)(2,2,7)G, which is poorly recognized by mammalian eIF4E. C. elegans expresses five isoforms of eIF4E (IFE-1, IFE-2, etc.). Three of these (IFE-3, IFE-4 and IFE-5) were investigated by means of spectroscopy and structural modelling based on mouse eIF4E bound to m(7)GDP. Intrinsic fluorescence quenching of Trp residues in the IFEs by iodide ions indicated structural differences between the apo and m(7)G cap bound proteins. Fluorescence quenching by selected cap analogues showed that only IFE-5 forms specific complexes with both m(7)G- and m(3)(2,2,7)G-containing caps (K(as) 2 x 10(6) M(-1) to 7 x 10(6) M(-1)) whereas IFE-3 and IFE-4 discriminated strongly in favor of m(7)G-containing caps. These spectroscopic results quantitatively confirm earlier qualitative data derived from affinity chromatography. The dependence of K(as) on pH indicated optimal cap binding of IFE-3, IFE-4 and IFE-5 at pH 7.2, lower by 0.4 pH units than that of eIF4E from human erythrocytes. These results provide insight into the molecular mechanism of recognition of structurally different caps by the highly homologous IFEs.

Abstract:
Abstract Primordial radionuclides are, among others, sources of radiation exposure to man. In this study, dust from some 24 nursery and primary schools in Ife Central and Ife East Local Government Areas (LGA) of Osun State were collected and analysed for 238U, 232Th, and 40K using CsI scintillation detector connected to a Universal Radiation Spectrum Analyser (URSA II) for spectrum analysis. From the specific activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K, absorbed dose rates and radiological parameters were calculated. The mean activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K in Bq/kg were found to be (45±2, 46±2), (56±5,60±5) and (669±76, 744±86) respectively for Ife Central and Ife East LGAs, however, the difference between the data sets from the two communities were not statistically significant. The total mean ± S.D (standard deviation) calculated over the whole study area were as follows; 238U= 45±11; 232Th=58±15 and 40K=702±196. The values of these radionuclides’ activities were higher than the world averages of 33, 45, and 420 for 238U, 232Th, and 40K respectively set by UNSCEAR. The mean absorbed dose rate in the air (in nGy/h) for Ife Central was 85±7 while for Ife East was 92±8. Both values were higher than the world average of 55 nGy/h. Also, the excess lifetime cancer risk was 1.66 × 10-3 for Ife Central and 1.8 × 10-3 for Ife East LGAs. Generally, Ife East LGA has higher activity concentrations than Ife Central LGA although the difference is not statistically significant.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction The evaluation of multiple myeloma response to treatment as defined by international guidelines is currently based on morphologic examination of bone marrow plasma cells, serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) and serum free light chain assay. For several years new tools are available as bone marrow plasma cell immunophenotyping and the HevyliteTM assay. HevyliteTM IgA assay provides an automated evaluation of serum heavy/light chain ratio (HLC) of the involved and uninvolved immunoglobulin (Ig) (i.e. IgAΚ/IgAλ). This is particularly interesting in IgA myeloma where the use of SPEP is limited due to a frequent comigration of monoclonal IgA with other proteins. We therefore compared the IgA quantification by Hevylite™ assay and the bone marrow plasma cell immunophenotyping for response evaluation and residual disease characterisation in IgA myeloma. Methods Hevylite™ assay, SPEP, IFE were performed in eleven IgA myeloma patients at different times: after induction chemotherapy, after the consolidation phase and after autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT). In the same time, minimal residual disease (MRD) assessment was performed on bone marrrow by multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC). Hevylite™ assay was performed on a Binding Site SPAplus analyser (Hevylite, Binding Site, Birmingham, UK) following the manufacturer recommendations. SPE and IFE were realized on Sebia Hydrasys analyser (Sebia, Evry, France) and results were read by two experienced biologists. Results 1. We found a perfect agreement between the IFE and immunophenotyping results at each time of evaluation, for positive results as for negative results. 2. The SPEP was contributive only in two patients and in these cases it was less sensitive than IFE. In the other patients, the monoclonal IgA migrated in beta region and/or as multiple bands, making the quantitative estimation difficult. 3. In all patients, when MRD by MFC was undetectable and IFE was negative, the HLC ratio was normal. 4. In 3 patients, HLC ratio was consistent with the IFE and MRD by MFC at each time of evaluation. Nevertheless, in 8 patients out of 11, while HLC ratio became normal, MRD by MFC and IFE were still positive. In all cases, the normalization of HLC ratio was followed, at the next step of evaluation, by the normalization of MFC and IFE. 5. In 5 patients, the normalization of HLC ratio occurred before ASCT, while IFE and MRD by MFC were still positive. Nevertheless, after ASCT, IFE and MRD by MFC became also negative, in accordance with the HLC ratio (Table 1). Conclusions During the evaluation of response to treatment of IgA myeloma, we observed a normalization of HLC ratio (Hevylite™ IgA assay) preceding the normalization of MRD by MFC and IFE. This could be explained by the fact that IFE and immunophenotyping provide very sensitive information but only on the monoclonal component. HLC ratio reflects the balance between the monoclonal and polyclonal Igs of involved and uninvolved isotype. A normalization of HLC ratio can be interpreted as an increasing polyclonal Ig proportion parallel with a decreasing monoclonal Ig proportion and may reflect the reconstitution of polyclonal plasma cells. If confirmed by other studies and long term follow-up, HLC ratio could be a non-invasive predictive marker of a good response in IgA myeloma. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction/Objective Although serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) is the backbone of testing to determine the presence of monoclonal proteins, immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) is more sensitive with the ability to pick up fainter bands or bands comigrating with the normal beta protein peak. Given the costs of performing additional IFE and the known increased sensitivity, algorithms for reflex IFE published in the literature have stated that unexplained neuropathy would be an indication for reflex IFE even if the SPEP appears negative in a new patient. However, literature on exactly how many of these reflex IFE’s end up positive is sparse. Therefore, we present the Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) experience in a veteran population. Methods As part of a quality assurance/improvement project, retrospective Vista/Fileman search of all SPEPs with IFE performed from January 2017 to February 2019 was undertaken to identify all SPEPs/IFE with the standard comment language typically used in patients with neuropathy, namely a preliminary diagnosis of no monoclonal bands on SPEP with an IFE to confirm this diagnosis. All SPEPs and IFEs had undergone review by a pathologist prior to signout which includes a chart review in the computerized patient record system (CPRS) to rule out the documented presence of unexplained neuropathy in new patients who have not previously had IFE workup. Results There were 129 SPEP/IFE cases identified. Of these 129, the overwhelming majority or 123 specimens (95%) were negative on IFE. However, there were 6 specimens (5%) that demonstrated a band on IFE without a band being identified on the SPEP. These bands were in the beta region or very faintly located in the gamma region at or below the limit of detection of the SPEP Conclusion The performance of IFE for patients with unexplained neuropathy would, in the veteran population at the VAMC, identify a monoclonal band in about 1/20 cases. This provides support for the published algorithms advocating for performing IFE on negative SPEP specimens from patients with unexplained neuropathy, as this finding might be important and would otherwise have been missed if just the SPEP was performed alone.

Abstract:
Control of gene expression at the translational level is crucial for many developmental processes. The mRNA cap-binding protein, eIF4E, is a key player in regulation of translation initiation; appropriate levels of eIF4E are essential for normal cell-cycle regulation and tissue differentiation. The observation that eIF4E levels are elevated during gametogenesis in several organisms suggests that eIF4E might have a specific role in gamete formation as well. We show that one of the five isoforms of C. elegans eIF4E, IFE-1, is enriched in the germline and is a component of germ granules (P granules). The association of IFE-1 with P granules requires the P-granule protein PGL-1. In vitro PGL-1 interacts directly with IFE-1, but not with the other four isoforms of eIF4E. Analysis of animals depleted of IFE-1 by RNAi shows that IFE-1 is required for spermatogenesis, specifically for efficient progression through the meiotic divisions and for the production of functional sperm, in both hermaphrodites and males. The requirement for IFE-1 is highly sensitive to temperature. IFE-1 is not required for oogenesis, as ife-1(RNAi) hermaphrodites produce viable progeny when normal sperm are supplied. Consistent with a primary role in spermatogenesis, ife-1 mRNA levels are highest in regions of the gonad undergoing spermatogenesis. Our results suggest that C. elegans spermatogenesis requires either this specific isoform of eIF4E or an elevated level of eIF4E.

Abstract:
This research investigated the use of radioactive isotopes to study the underground water characteristics of Ife South and Ife North Local governments area of Osun state in Southwestern Nigeria. The study aimed to determine the origin of water, the flow paths, residence time, and prediction of the geological formation of the study area. Twelve water samples were collected from the two local governments using standard methods for isotope study. Uranium 234U and 238U were analyzed for water samples using a gamma-ray spectrometer with Caesium Iodide (CsI) scintillation detector and physical analyses such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and temperature were also determined. The specific activity of 238U ranged between 27.44±0.55 to 36.89±1.70 Bq/kg; activity ratio of water samples from the two LGA ranged from 0.83 to 1.07 with average activity ratio of 0.901. All the sample locations have an activity ratio of less than 1.00 except two locations in Ife South LGA (Ooni 1 and 2); a 234U value of 30.386747 Bq/kg was taken as constant. Ife North and Ife South have an average EC, turbidity, TDS, residence time of 493.3 (µs/cm), and 686.6 (µs/cm); 1.2 NTU and 3.33 NTU; 108.67 mg/l and 523.33 mg/l; 2.889 ma and 2.784 ma respectively. In conclusion, the groundwater of the two LGA originate from the same source and are in the oxidation state; aquifers within Ife North and Ife South are separated with a barrier; hence its groundwater does not flow through one another. The residence time of groundwater in the two LGA is over 2.8 ma; Ooni 1 and 2 area is underlain by rocks rich in Uranium (granite), rocks underlying Ife South is younger to Ife North, Ife North is underlying by old weathered rocks (sedimentary rocks).

Abstract:
Itsekiri people came from Egypt after the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. They arrived and settled in the present Warn Kingdom in about 28 B.C in Gborodo, Ureju and Ode Itsekiri. The leaders of the teams were Iset, Iweret and Ipi. The word Oritse which means God in Itsekiri appears to be closer to Osiris, god of the Nile than those of their neighbours - Urhobo, Ijaw and Ilaje. Ra, the god of the sun in Egypt that helps the crops to mature is the wife of Umalokun in Itsekiri, the provider of sea foods. Ife oracle with its 256 literary corpus is a compendium of the cultural practices of the people. It includes the metaphysical and psychic studies of the people, a source of ethics and discipline of the people. It must be sustained to raise the spiritual level of the people. The phenomenological approach was employed by the authors to examine the historical configuration of the Itsekiri social system and the place of Ife oracle. It was concluded that Ife oracle, as compendium of knowledge and reality, is the access point to understanding our human inheritance and realizing our core values. Upon this, it was recommended that Ife oracle is not fetish. Rather it is a valid and reliable source of knowledge.

The paper presents the results of mathematical and experimental modeling of in-line production of inertial fusion energy (IFE) targets of a reactor-scaled design. The technical approach is the free-standing target (FST) layering method in line-moving spherical shells. This includes each step of the fabrication and injection processes in the FST transmission line (FST-TL) considered as a potential solution of the problem of mass target manufacturing. Finely, we discuss the development strategy of the FST-TL creation seeking to develop commercial power production based on laser IFE.

Abstract:
Opening ParagraphIn 1938 an African building a house in the city of Ife, the cultural capital of the Yorubas and the mythical cradle of Yoruba civilisation, came upon an extraordinary cache of ancient Nigerian bronzes. In all, at least fifteen bronzes were uncovered in 1938 in a compound only 100 yards from the palace of the Oni of Ife. These bronzes were to prove of great historical and artistic significance. Until that time only two other bronzes had been unearthed in the Yoruba area, and one of those had disappeared, leaving Nigeria only a single original and a replica. In the disposition of the priceless new finds there ensued a tale of intrigue, prevarication, outraged nationalism, and narrow-minded ethnocentricism that drew into its maelstrom the British colonial government of Nigeria, the US Consulate in Lagos, and the USA's Department of State. Although the Ife bronzes, which today reside in a handsome if small museum in the city of Ife, are not so well known as, for example, the Elgin marbles or certain other antiquities taken from the Third World, the controversy surrounding their removal from Nigeria and their eventual return was filled with the same emotion and employed the same arguments heard today over the rightful location of national cultural treasures. The Nigerian dispute is made all the more poignant in that one of the major protagonists was not a money-seeking antiquities dealer, but a young American anthropologist destined to be one of the most astute and sympathetic interpreters of Yoruba culture.

Abstract:
Abstract. Monoclonal gammopathies represent a wide spectrum of related diseases. The common denominator is the presence of a monoclonal protein in the serum or urine, which can be in the form of intact immunoglobulin, immunoglobulin fragments, and/or free light chains (κ and λ). We can detect these abnormalities by immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) in which specific antibodies are overlaid after electrophoresis and the corresponding immunoglobulin. In our study, we compared gel-based and capillary-based serum protein electrophoresis methods to identify and characterize monoclonal immunoglobulins in serum samples. We analyzed 500 serum samples by Sebia Hydragel agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE)/immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) and CAPILLARYS 2 capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)/immunosubtraction (IS). AGE/IFE and CZE/IS had an overall agreement of 98% on serum protein electrophoresis. In our hands, AGE/IFE and CZE/IS had the same specificity for detection of monoclonal proteins; however, CZE/IS seems to be more sensitive than AGE/IFE for the detection of some critical cases. However, CZE/IS is an analytically suitable alternative to AGE/IFE, although laboratories should need to combine, for singular samples, both electrophoretic methods in their clinical routine. A combined use of AGE/IFE and CZE/IS is necessary to lead to an accurate diagnosis and clinically error-free results.

Abstract:
Gross efficiency (GE) and the index of pedal force effectiveness (IFE) are important factors that enhance cyclists’ performance; however, the effects of changing pedal force (gear ratio) and cadence on these indices while riding on a road racing bicycle are poorly investigated. This study aimed to examine the effect of changing gear ratio or cadence on GE and IFE using a road racing bicycle. Nine male cyclists completed graded submaximal cycling tests (five stages of 4 min submaximal cycling sessions with 1 min passive rest intervals). The work rate of each stage was determined using two principles: changing gear ratio at a fixed cadence and changing cadence at a fixed gear ratio. We determined GE and IFE using respiratory variables and pedal reaction forces, respectively. Increasing the gear ratio improved GE, and was associated with the IFE. Although increasing the cadence slightly improved GE from the initial level, the increased values then mostly maintained. IFE was almost stable even when cadence increased. Moreover, no significant correlation was observed between the changes in GE and IFE accompanied by increasing cadence. Our data indicate that an increasing gear ratio, but not cadence, may affect GE and IFE while riding on a road racing bicycle.

Abstract:
Abstract: BACKGROUND: In-flight medical emergency (IFE) impose considerable challenges on healthcare workers (HCWs) because of limited resources, constrained environment, and medico-legal issues. This study assessed HCWs knowledge, willingness, and confidence in addressing in-flight medical emergencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August 2023 among nurses and physicians working in primary healthcare centers and governmental hospitals in Bahrain. Subjects were selected using stratified random sampling; a self-administered online questionnaire of high reliability (Cronbach alpha = 0.914) was used to collect the data. Logistic regression analysis were performed to determine association of knowledge, willingness, and confidence in dealing with in-flight emergencies with various characteristics of HCWs. RESULTS: The study included 805 HCWs with mean age of 35.5 years (SD=9.2). The findings indicated deficiency in training, with <10% of participants trained on IFE. A considerable proportion of participants exhibited low levels of knowledge (88.3%) and confidence (75.9%) with IFE. Nonetheless, more than half of the participants expressed the willingness to assist in IFE (59.1%). Non-Bahraini healthcare professionals (odds ratio [OR] = 2.901, P < 0.001) had higher knowledge of IFE. Nurses (OR = 1.642, P = 0.047) and participants with longer work experience had higher willingness to assist in IFE. In addition, professionals who were non-Bahraini (OR = 3.249, P < 0.001), working in secondary care (OR = 1.619, 95% confidence interval P = 0.021), had had training on IFE (OR = 2.247, P = 0.004), and had encountered IFE before (OR = 1.974, P = 0.006) had greater self-confidence levels. CONCLUSION: Considering the low levels of knowledge and confidence healthcare professionals in Bahrain had with regard to IFE, targeted training initiatives and educational programs are necessary to improve HCW’s confidence and preparedness to deal with such emergencies.

Abstract:
Historians of Nigeria have been curious for many years about the relationship between the various states of the southern zone since the sixteenth century. The fact that the area has produced a rich art, has a fairly elaborate set of traditional histories, and has been the subject of some systematic archeological work means that the modern scholar has somewhat more to go on in reconstructing the region's history than just the fairly sparse and disappointing contemporary texts that came out of the early Portuguese contacts and subsequent European trade and navigation. But contemporary documentation for southern Nigeria remains much weaker than that for other African areas, such as the central African zone, Gold Coast, or the western Atlantic coast.Nevertheless, documents have raised problems in understanding the history of the area that cannot be fully solved by recourse to the other sources of information, in spite of the comparative richness of non-documentary sources. One of these documentary problems is the issue of the Ife-Benin relationship as documentated in archeology, contemporary texts, and art history. The problems raised by the relationship between these two southern Nigerian cities ultimately reflects on a much larger set of questions concerning the relationship of all the early states south of the Niger, at a period quite near the origin of the state system that would predominate the rest of the pre-colonial period.
