Objectives: Extraesophageal reflux is common. The treatment costs are high, and there are associations with other diseases, including laryngeal cancer. Our studies of the mucosal immune response to this common inflammatory disease suggest an important role for the nonclassic antigen-presenting molecule CD1d in the response to inflammation. This study was performed to further explore the relationship between the CD1d–NKT cell–iGb3 axis and reflux. The remaining NKT cells failed to produce measurable quantities of interferon-γ in vivo and in vitro after activation with α-galactosylceramide. It is currently thought that one specific component of the lysosomal processing pathway, which leads to the production of isoglobotrihexosylceramide (iGb3), is essential for normal NKT cell development. New evidence now shows that NKT cell development can be disrupted by a diverse range of mutations that interfere with different elements of the lysosomal processing and degradation of glycolipids. In mammals, the novel protein fibroblast growth factor receptor-like 1 (FGFRL1) is involved in the development of metanephric kidneys. It appears that this receptor controls a crucial transition of the induced metanephric mesenchyme to epithelial renal vesicles, which further develop into functional nephrons. FGFRL1 knockout mice lack metanephric kidneys and do not express any fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 8 in the metanephric mesenchyme, suggesting that FGFRL1 and FGF8 play a decisive role during kidney formation. Abstract:
A new silicon carbide (SiC) planar-gate insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is proposed and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Compared to the traditional SiC planar-gate IGBT, the new IGBT boasts a much stronger injection enhancement effect, which leads to a low on-state voltage (VON) approaching the SiC trench-gate IGBT. The strong injection enhancement effect is obtained by a heavily doped carrier storage layer (CSL), which creates a hole barrier under the p-body to hinder minority carriers from being extracted away through the p-body. A p-shield is located at the bottom of th

Diversity indices of tree species in tropical rainforest have been studied, but less effort has been devoted to the ground flora studies especially in sacred groves of tropical rainforest, Nigeria, as it plays a critical role in nutrient cycling and energy flow within the forest ecosystem. This study was carried out to determine the ground flora species diversity, richness and density in five traditional forests (Igbo-Ile, Igbo-Oba, Igbo-Olua, Igbo-Olodumare Igbo-Gbopo) of southwestern Nigeria. The ground flora enumeration of 5 x 10m was laid at the centre of 50 x 50m laid in each of the sacre

There are four subtypes of human IgG with different effector functions. Quantifying the relative amount of each IgG subtype is important for laboratory diagnosis in multiple settings. However, in an evolving landscape of the appreciation of human variability and the need for precision/personalised laboratory diagnosis, it has also been shown that there are numerous natural variants of IgG subtypes, with at least 29 having been described. It has recently been reported that commercially available polyclonal antisera to IgG3 cross react with variants of other IgG subtypes, while available monoclo

Abstract Igbo proverbs (Ilu Igbo) are linguistic expressions which projects principles with the intent to address diverse social, political, economic and culturally contextual issues that bother on values, morals and the identity of the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria. Proverbs are handed down to different generations by speech acts of storytelling, conversing, rebuking or admonishing. The researchers carried out a pragmatic analysis of Igbo proverbs as a social practice, to establish their meaning and how its social significance are internalized and continually recreated. ABSTRACTWe compared the bactericidal activity of recombinant sets of chimeric IgG monoclonal antibodies against two important outer membrane meningococcal vaccine antigens: PorA and factor H binding protein (FHbp). The sets contained human Fc portions from IgG1, IgG3, and two IgG3 mutants (IgG3m15 and IgGm17) with hinge regions of 15 and 17 amino acids encoded by hinge exons h2 and h1, respectively (human IgG3 has a hinge region of 62 amino acids encoded by hinge exons h1, h2, h3, and h4, while human IgG1 has a hinge region of only 15 amino acids encoded by one hinge exon) and mouse V regions.

ABSTRACTAmid assumptions of a hegemonic Igbo Christian identity, conversions to Islam began in the late 1930s in the Igbo territory of south-east Nigeria – the only region in the country that was not touched by the nineteenth-century Islamic jihad and subsequent efforts to extend the borders of Islam in Nigeria. Four decades after the emergence of Islam in the Igbo homeland, and with the mixed blessings of a civil war, Igboland began to manifest clear evidence of indigenous Muslim presence. A key aspect of this article is how one can be both Igbo and Muslim. It considers the complex interplay
